Message from our coaches (Margaret & David Head)

In just four short years the Crossway Ladies has established itself as a highly competitive team with a reputation for playing fairly and good sportsmanship. Winning the Ladies Cup competition this year as well as the division one Fair-play and overall team Fair -play awards confirms that this reputation is well deserved. Whilst we all enjoy winning these awards overshadowing all of that is the team spirit and commitment to each other which is both unique and is why so many of us remain committed to this special group of women. We have enjoyed being part of this special group and look forward to many more seasons together. David and Margaret Head

Premiers of Gwen Wright Shield A tough game in the grand final against Monbulk this year. David and his scouts (namely Fiona, Michelle, Sam, and Cat) went out midweek, to scope the opposition. This seemed to pay off with David’s new game plan... No positions, just man-on-man!! A tough game, with lots of running, and some confusion at times, but it certainly worked a charm!! Well done ladies, a great effort by all involved.

TOTAL : 63 goals scored this season

Winner’s of the Fair Play Awards

One of the biggest achievements this year was managing the entire season without any disciplinary points! Thanks to David and Margaret re-enforcing this message week-in, week-out, we managed to not only win the fair play award for ladies division one, but also of the entire VCSA. CONGRATULATIONS!! It’s great to be in a team that plays in the true spirit of the game.

Kat Pham

Michelle Wallace

Always faithful Kat, often found playing opposite Michelle on the field.

(captain)

Michelle is usually found at left back... or wait… was that right back? David could never get it straight between Kat and Michelle all season! Captain for the second year running, Michelle helped to “keep the calm” and “sanity” on the field.

Despite a near episode of whooping cough, nothing kept Kat away from the game, even coming “to run lines” and accidently ending up playing on the field!! A joy to play with Kat again for another season.

Nice footwork Kat!

Ros Spargo Look at that girl go!!

(vice captain)

Despite battling illness during the season, Ros fought back, and her efforts have seen her as one of the most improved throughout the season. Ros is tenacious and someone not to be messed with on the field!!

Gabrielle Fielding Gabby has had an amazing season, playing both in defense and in midfield at various times. Her speed and agility have seen her taking some great runs down the field this year. There is not much that can stop this one… well, except for her constant injuries!

Our Faithful Vice Captain: Ros

Tiffany Hui Tiffany was a new player to the ladies team this year. At the beginning of the season, after recovering from an injury early on, Tiffany came back with vengeance! Tiffany and her great footwork can usual be found on the wings, particularly on the left. Nope, she’s not a New Zealander, despite the Hakka moves!

Jerusha Ho Stephanie Head (vice captain) Legs 11, Steph, played in various positions throughout the season, her speed often leading her to play on the wings towards the end of the season.

Jerusha also had a great season, particularly towards the end, kicking a total of 9 goals (despite missing at least 8 games early on, due to uni placement!) Jerusha was usually found as striker or attacking midfielder, running around the opposition with her fancy footwork.

Found in the number 11 shirt each week, without fail, Steph’s passion for the game was certainly evident.

Jerusha running circles around the opposition

Fiona Bashford Our top goal scorer Fiona (always seen in shirt number 17), this season scored an incredible 41 goals.

Seeing multiple players from the opposition against Fiona was certainly not uncommon!

Despite a few injuries (including cracked ribs!!) there was not much that could keep her away from the game (she didn’t miss a single game all season!)…. Dedication, or insanity??? I’ll let you decide… either way it was fantastic to have her back playing with us again this season.

Miho Miho joined us partway through the season, flying all the way from Japan just to play with us… yes, she heard we were that good!! It was great to have her join us, even though her graceful moves left us looking even more clumsy than usual!

Bec Sutton We were eager to have the lovely Bec join our team this year. From training with her last year, it was great to see her strut her stuff on the field!! Her skills certainly developed throughout the season, and proved her to have a great shot on goals.

Cat Shepherd

Wendy Lau

Cat, otherwise known as cripple, had a poor end to her season, due to a major knee injury during one of the games cutting her season short.

Also fondly known by some in the team as “Audrey”.... Due to her very classy off field manner!

Despite this set back, she was still seen at every game and training session for the rest of the season! Cat playing out of goals... Wedgies are not a valid form of tackle Cat!

When she’s not jet-setting to Singapore, Wendy can usually be found playing on the wings.

Cat was our main goal-keeper for the majority of the season.

Mel Chang Tracey with the winning goal in penalty shoot-outs at our semi-final

Mel joined us for another season, after spending most of last season abroad!

Mostly Mel was found out on the wings, but was keen to lend a hand wherever it was needed! It was great to have Mel’s cheerful smile and attitude back again! We missed her last season!

Tracey Nel Tracey was overseas for the majority of this season, however we were lucky to have her back in time for a few of the final games, including the cup finals, in which she scored the winning goal of the semi-final! Tracey was a great asset in the midfield, and it was fantastic to have Tracey back playing with the Crossway Soccer Club again!!

Claire Claire joined us this year, adding an English accent to the mix. Although she wasn’t able to play with us during part of the season due to other commitments, it was great to have her as part of the team. Her rather large dog should also get a mention, as he supported us during our tough grand final!

Amy Teh Jess Fero

Amy was back to join us again after having a fantastic season last year. Although this season was hampered by studies and illness, it didn’t stop Amy from playing some great soccer on the field.

Jess is usually found in the back line, as our sweeper, or as a defensive midfielder. Her tenacity and determination is evident on the field, and she holds the team well.

Amy is usually found on the wings, and she is always one to be encouraging and a delight to play with.

Jess is ever reliable to get those balls that sneak past the rest of us... And for that, we are always thankful!

Jamie Sutton Jamie has had a great season, even stepping up to be our goal-keeper part-way during the season, and saving some fantastic penalty shots in the process!! Jamie also has spent parts of the season in defense and midfield, even scoring herself 5 goals though-out this season. Above: A massive goal kick!! Right: Saving a penalty shot in the semi-final against Knox.

Samantha Head

Sam shows her true colours

An “all round” player, who seems to play a different position each game! Sam (usually playing in shirt 13) had some amazing ‘near misses’ on goal, as she was so drawn to those posts that she loves much!!

Stef Holmes Generally playing in defence, midfield, or even on a wing, Stef manages to run her heart (and legs) out each game, but somehow still looks amazing. Any tips for the rest of us?

Also known as: Stef, Cookie, Chech, Teche, Holmesette, or just “hey you!”.

Thanks for another wonderful year. I thoroughly enjoy playing with you all, and it’s something I look forward to each week. All of you have put in a tremendous effort this year. I want to thank those that have made sacrifices to be at games/training throughout the year, and also to those that have stepped down, or had less match time during certain games. You are all valued members of the team, and I feel blessed to be able to be a part of such a wonderful group of talented ladies!! Let's do it again next year! Michelle Wallace
