COMMENCEMENT

THE STORY OF CROWN COLLEGE For over a century, Crown College has been preparing Christians to serve and influence the world. Founded in 1916 by Reverend J.D. Williams, the College began with four students who wanted to study the Bible. It quickly blossomed and grew into a training school and eventually became known as St. Paul Bible Institute, establishing a solid reputation as a leader in the Bible-college movement throughout the Midwest. By 1924, enrollment grew to 152; today, it is over 1400. In the late 1950s, the name was changed to St. Paul Bible College. Accreditation was granted to the College in 1975 by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association. The college resided in St. Paul, Minnesota, for over 50 years. In 1970, as the College grew, it moved to its present location just west of Minneapolis, near the communities of Waconia and St. Bonifacius. Nestled among the rolling hills of one of the most lake dotted regions of Minnesota, the beautiful campus offers an inviting place for learning and growth. In the following years, the College expanded the curriculum with the introduction of many new majors and areas of study; the campus also grew with the addition of several housing facilities. In 1992, the name was changed to Crown College. That same year, Crown launched the EXCEL program with 53 adult students taking classes in Management and Ethics or Christian Ministry. The program grew into what is now known as the School of Online Studies and Graduate School, with over 600 students enrolled. Today, Crown remains an exceptional, private Christian college passionate about preparing Christians who serve Christ and influence the world. It is distinguished by its pledge to deliver a Christ-centered education, online and on-campus, which is academically excellent and globally connected. Crown’s commitment to providing an affordable private college education is evidenced by it being one of the ten most affordable private Christian colleges in the Midwest. More than 30 percent of Crown students also participate in one or more of its 16 athletic teams that compete in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference within NCAA DIII. Also, Crown is a proud member of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA). Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon His throne, Hark! How the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own. Awake, my soul, and sing of Him who died for thee. And hail Him as thy matchless King through all eternity. Crown him the Lord of love; behold His hands and side, Rich wounds, yet visible above in beauty glorified. No angels in the sky can fully bear that sight. But downward bends their burning eyes at mysteries so bright. Crown Him the Lord of life, who triumphed o’er the grave, And rose victorious in the strife for those He came to save; His glories now we sing, who died and rose on high, Who died eternal life to bring and lives that death may die. Crown Him the Lord of years, the Potentate of time, Creator of the rolling spheres, ineffably sublime. All hail, Redeemer, hail! For Thou hast died for me. Thy praise shall never, never fail throughout eternity.

BIOGRAPHIES Crown College President: Dr. Andrew C. Denton became the 17th president of Crown College on July 1, 2021. Dr. Denton has served as Executive Vice President and Vice President of University Relations at North Central University (MN), and Vice President of Enrollment Management at both Bethel University (MN) and Evangel University (MO) where his career began in Admissions. He holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education Leadership from St. Louis University and an M.B.A. from Missouri State University. Dr. Denton and his wife, Linda, have been married for 23 years and are the proud parents of three children: Lexie (17), Ashlyn (16), and Drew (14). Commencement Speaker: Dr. Karen S. Gustafson studied at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and completed her Ph.D. in psychology at Universidad de Palermo in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She has been a licensed worker with the Christian and Missionary Alliance since 1985, starting from youth leadership and outreach in Minneapolis to missions work for 18 years in Argentina. She served for 8 years on the National Board of the Christian & Missionary Alliance (C&MA). Since 2007, she has been a professor of psychology at Crown College. She is passionate about teaching and her favorite part is knowing and loving Crown College students.

COMMENCEMENT

GRADUATION HONORS Baccalaureate graduates who have completed a specified amount of work at Crown College are awarded graduation honors based on the cumulative grade point average. Specific criteria can be found in the Crown College Catalog. Graduates receiving honors are presented with a gold cord to wear at Commencement. Actual graduation honors may be adjusted for those yet to complete final course requirements. Arts & Sciences baccalaureate degree candidates earn a second major in Christian Studies by completing at least 30 credits in Bible and theology. Candidates listed include those who have previously completed work as well as those whose graduation is pending the completion of work this summer.

ACADEMIC ATTIRE The custom of wearing academic gowns and hoods dates from the twelfth century when a long gown and cowl (similar to the academic hood of today) were worn by clerics and scholars in unheated buildings. Today academic regalia signifies scholastic achievement. Bachelors’ gowns are made with pointed sleeves; Masters’ gowns are made with long closed sleeves; Doctors’ gowns have velvet panels down the front and velvet bars on round and open sleeves. The size and shape of the hood distinguishes the degree, a doctoral hood being the largest. The color used in the velvet border of the hood indicates the field. The colors in the lining of the hood indicate the college or university which confers the degree. Members of the Board of Trustees wear doctoral gowns during their term of office along with the black mortarboard worn by all participants. Crown College is proud to recognize its graduating veterans and military members with a red, white, and blue regalia cord. The cord colors replicate those of our nation’s flag to denote the valor, excellence, and sacrifice these individuals have exemplified in their service to the United States Armed Forces.
