Dear Cynthia Addams:

Thank you for visiting us at Crow’s Shadow last month; I am looking forward to helping you find meaningful artwork to add to the The Collins Foundation collection. For any of your collection committee who have not yet visited Crow’s Shadow, we are a small fine print center located on the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR) just outside of Pendleton, Oregon. 2017 marks the 25th anniversary of the organization, which we will be celebrating with a retrospective exhibition at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art in Salem. The opening reception and book release will be held on September 22-23; I hope you will consider joining us to celebrate this milestone. The following catalog of prints from Crow’s Shadow Press features a selection of works from contemporary artists, from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds, who either currently reside in Oregon, or who have strong ties to the state. This sampling of work highlights artists we discussed during your visit and several additional ideas from our extensive inventory in the flat files. Additional prints, as well as brief biographies and further information can be found on our website at www.crowsshadow.org. Some of these artists are highly established and wellrecognized, such as James Lavadour who was featured in the 2013 Venice Biennale; Marie Watt who has shown at the Smithsonian’ NMAI in New York; or Rick Bartow who has a pair of monumental sculptures gracing the National Mall in Washington, DC. Others are emerging artists, such as CTUIR locals Vanessa Enos or Whitney Minthorn—all are exceptionally talented artists and their work is part of an important creative legacy for this region and beyond. We have two very recent Artists-in-Residence, Modou Dieng, and Demian DinéYazhi’, whose prints are in the queue to be editioned and should be completed within the next couple of months. I will send you photos of their works as they become available. Thank you for your interest in supporting Crow’s Shadow and the wonderful artists with whom we are so privileged to work.

Sincerely,

Nika Blasser Marketing Director, Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts on behalf of the Board and Staff of Crow’s Shadow

Each print represents a triple threat of aesthetic and technical excellence combined with compelling subject matter. Crow’s Shadow Institute fosters work by Native American artists and this infusion also helps build our growing holdings of works on paper by Indigenous artists. -Katherine Blood, Curator of Fine Prints at the Library of Congress, discussing the 2015 purchase of 18 Crow’s Shadow prints for the Prints & Photographs Division of the Library of Congress

ABOUT CROW’S SHADOW Crow’s Shadow is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization formed in 1992 by local artists James Lavadour (Walla Walla) and Phillip Cash Cash (Cayuse and Nez Perce). Our mission is to provide a creative conduit for educational, social, and economic opportunities for Native Americans through artistic development. Over the last 25 years Crow’s Shadow has evolved into world-class studio focused on contemporary fine-art printmaking. We typically host 3-4 visiting artists-in-residence per year; who are invited to our printmaking studio for a two week period to work with the Crow’s Shadow Master Printer, Frank Janzen. We offer paid artist residencies, which are funded through generous grants; revenue from the prints that we publish is shared evenly with the artists, providing a potentially sustained source of income. Our permanent collection travels extensively and has been featured at many museums and cultural institutions, including the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) in both NY and DC, the Eiteljorg in Indianapolis, and the Museum of Contemporary Native arts in Santa Fe. We work with wonderful contemporary artists, both Native and non-Native, but place a strong emphasis on artists who, according to James Lavadour are able to “bring the art world to the Rez and the Rez back to the art world”.
