VISUAL VISUAL ARTS ARTS

Are you enthusiastic and self-motivated with good creative and practical skills?

There are a wide range of Art related academic and vocational courses available at Coulsdon Sixth Form College and the art team is happy to help students choose the most appropriate programme. The Visual Arts areas are well resourced and set up for a variety of media including print making and textiles, photography and graphic design. There are also dedicated resource areas equipped with Apple iMac Computers.

Art & Design

The course equips students with in-depth knowledge from a wide selection of areas within the creative fields of Fine Art, Design and Textiles.

The course structure can allow the qualification to be flexible to meet learners’ interests, abilities and aspirations.

Textiles

The course encourages experimental approaches to Art & Design with an emphasis on Fashion.

Students will explore different aspects of fashion and textiles including focussing on specialist areas such as fashion or costume design, fashion accessories or surface pattern design.

Fine Art

This is a practical Fine Art course.

It gives students the opportunity to develop an appreciation of the visual world and to respond to it in a personal and creative way. Emphasis is placed on developing visual language skills through drawing, painting and printmaking and much of the work is based directly on observation. We also have many students who take Fine Art for their own interest and as a balance to their more academic subjects.

Graphics

Are you interested in how ideas are communicated visually?

Graphics is a highly practical subject where students combine traditional graphic techniques with digital technology to produce their own work.

The main areas of the course cover Advertising, Branding, Illustration, Packaging and Typography. Students are encouraged to see their practice in the context of contemporary visual culture.

Photography

Are you interested in developing creative and innovative methods to express your personal vision?

Photography is largely a practical subject and is all about visual communication skills. Students will use a variety of black and white photographic techniques and experiment with digital media, as well as analysing and researching the work of other photographers, designers and artists. Students are also lucky to have access to a dark room to produce their photos onsite here at College.

STUDENT STUDENT PROFILE PROFILE

How has Coulsdon Sixth Form College helped you develop your career goals?

Studying at Coulsdon Sixth Form College allowed me to gain practical knowledge in audio, and helped me learn the theory behind live sound. It was a great advantage to have this knowledge when applying for my apprenticeship.

Tell me about your Apprenticeship at The Royal Albert Hall.

I knew I didn’t want to go to University to study Music Technology, so an Apprenticeship was the right option for me. I immediately started searching and I found this Apprenticeship at The Royal Albert Hall. I wasn’t sure if I was going to get it but getting work experience during my time at Coulsdon Sixth Form College, meant I was a lot more knowledgeable and hireable. It was great to get the job and now I’m being paid to learn and build my career. I’ve worked in a wide range of areas, from audio to lighting and stage management to rigging as well as running teams and helping to bring new shows in every day.

What are your future aspirations?

I intend to go freelance once I complete my apprenticeship, likely in lighting as I found a love for this during my time at The Royal Albert Hall. I’d eventually like to go on tour and try to work in as many different venues as possible to develop my knowledge and skills.

Do you have any advice for students looking to study here?

University isn’t always the only option, so don’t worry if it’s not right for you.

Try and get as much work experience in an area that really interests you, as it certainly gives you an advantage over other people when applying for all kinds of job roles.
