FROM THE CHAIR AND CEO Farmlands Chief Executive Brent Esler has made a decision to step down from the leadership role as of 1st March 2015.

The Farmlands Board has begun the search for a new Chief Executive capable of meeting the future needs of the co-operative. During the transition period Tony van der Hoorn, Chief Financial Officer will take up the role of acting Chief Executive Officer, supported by the Senior Leadership Team.

Brent Esler’s contribution to the business has been significant. Having developed the business case for the merger between Farmlands Trading Society Limited and CRT in 2013, Brent went on to lead the team to achieve record growth and profit for the 2014 Financial Year, revenue at $2.46 billion and profit 24 percent higher than the previous record years of the two co-operatives combined.

INGREDIENTS 2 eggs ¾ cup mashed pumpkin ½ teaspoon nutmeg ¹⁄ ³ cup water ½ teaspoon cinnamon 12 teaspoons cream cheese

1 cup oil 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 cup sugar 1 ¾ cups flour Pinch of salt

METHOD

Farmlands store.

Mix eggs and sugar, beat until fluffy.

Add oil, water and pumpkin, mix. Sift in dry ingredients, stir lightly.

Put 1 tablespoon into muffin tin then add one teaspoon of cream cheese and fill with mixture. Repeat process.

Bake 15-20 minutes at 190°C.

“I didn’t work for 12 months – I didn’t do anything really,” he says. “Leading up to that, I went through periods of not sleeping or eating. Once I gave up, I spent all my time sleeping – 12 hours a night. I just ground to a halt.”

“That’s the goal – to get people talking about it, rather than hiding in their houses or out the back of the farm, making poor decisions or worse – no decisions.”

David says in a lot of cases, the person who is suffering does not realise the extent of the issue. It is usually the spouse or someone else who has to react first.

“Either way, the first thing you need to do is talk to someone.

You can try and keep it to yourself but it doesn’t work,” he says.

“If you see someone who isn’t well, try and crack up a conversation with them and try and get them to talk, or talk to someone who is closer to them. When it’s really bad, you need to seek medical intervention.”

“The publicity started happening in spring 2012, after a colleague of mine committed suicide,” David explains. “I didn’t

David, who was Federated Farmers Dairy Chairman in Hawke’s Bay for some time, spoke at length with the Regional Chairman (and former National Chairman) Bruce Wills. At the next Hawke’s Bay meeting, Bruce had organised for the entire meeting to be focused on farmer depression. So David spoke publicly and “didn’t leave any stones unturned”.

David’s story reached the national body, which created the “When life’s a bitch” campaign. The distinctive green card with a black dog on it contained phone numbers farmers could call when they needed to talk. And in 2013, when drought again turned the screws on the farming community, David was asked to speak up – this time to a national audience.

“They asked me if I’d help the campaign and I said yes. All of a sudden I had reporters and microphones everywhere... it’s been a bit of a journey.”

It is a journey that is more than likely shared by many, who are going through their battle in silence. David says the only way that will change is to break down the barriers associated with depression.

“I don’t think there should be such a stigma for this illness.

My illness just happens to be depression – someone else’s could be diabetes, or whatever,” he says.

Another shareholder who has “come out the other side” is Marlborough farmer, Doug Avery. Not content to stay quiet on his struggles, Doug has started his own organisation to help other farmers prepare for scenarios that cause pressure and stress. Called Resilient Farmer, Doug hopes his talks will offer collaborative support to farmers.

When The Farmlander catches up with Doug, he has just finished speaking to 200 farmers at Invercargill. Part of a road show around the South Island, the Invercargill seminar is just the second stop of a 35 date tour.

“The talks I’m holding cover the journey I’ve had – from broken and stuffed 16 years ago to highly successful and enterprising today. It’s been built on the three pillars of resilience – financial, environmental and emotional.

“My discovery is that emotional resilience of people is the greatest economic opportunity to farmers, not to mention rural sector, in general.”

It sounds like a business pitch – but it isn’t. Doug’s belief is that by focusing on themselves, namely not putting themselves under immense pressure for things out of their control, farmers can proactively contribute not only to the success of their business but their own mental wellbeing.

Doug says Resilient Farmers is about directing people to the appropriate help, enabling them to accept people start in a totally different place and focusing them on the fact that all businesses need to keep re-inventing.

“Sad people make bad decisions,” Doug explains. “The process of learning is a core feature if they want a sustained, happy life.”

Doug is still involved in his farming operation from the accounting and business side, while his son is general manager. Resilient Farmer continues to grow around the country, as word of his message spreads.

While he offers business advice to help farmers before things get too bad, Doug offers a proactive approach to life as well, to assist farmers before a low point occurs.

“The advice I’ve got is very straight forward – once you’re in an event, you’re caught up in the tide. Take careful note of what you’ve done wrong and the key message that goes with that is learn to bounce forward from your travels. Once this

Closing down the dairy milking shed at the end of lactation Milk quality is all about being proactive, not reactive. Here is a recommended farm dairy shut down procedure and other valuable tips.

1. Final milking machine clean for the season • Double the usual amount of alkali you use and add an extra litre of liquid chlorine to the alkali wash.

• Recirculate for as long as possible, maintaining the wash solution temperature above 60°C. • Dump this solution and brush any stubborn deposits that need removing.

• Follow with a high strength wash of acid solution (acid sanitiser), also in hot water if you can.

• Rinse out with a cold acid sanitiser and shut the plant down for the off season.

2. Any unions on the milk line that have been troublesome during the season need to be dismantled and checked • The plastic unions with cone seals in them are a particular worry and need to be checked. Replace if any signs of wear at all.

• If you have welded unions with O ring seals, check for leaks and replace seals as necessary.

Taking on hill country: Tonic plantain reaches new heights As sheep farming is pushed further onto hill country areas, the need to provide higher quality feed in these environments becomes more crucial. Tonic plantain is able to enhance the development of uncultivable hill country to increase finishing capability.

Brooklands Station Manager and Farmlands shareholder, Simon Hull, says Agricom’s Tonic has been instrumental in providing the station’s hill country with a new lease of life and productivity.

been transformed into what many now consider a strategic forage. It is suited to a range of soil types, rainfall zones and other climatic conditions. Tonic is unique as it is an upright cultivar in all seasons and has similar autumn and winter activity to perennial ryegrass. Tonic can increase the ME (metabolisable energy) of the forage available on hill country, as well as giving some drought tolerance and it recovers a lot quicker than many other species.

The 1,500 hectares effective station in Alfredton, Wairarapa runs 7,500 ewes, this year producing 10,500 lambs, including 2,000 replacements, as well as 380 breeding cows and 600 dairy heifer grazers. Currently Brooklands has 70ha of flats sown with plantain, 100ha of aerial sown plantain and has plans for another 30ha in autumn 2015.

Brooklands' data on growth rates for a full year (FarmIQ) showed an average growth rate of 260g/head/day on plantain, with little difference between the flats and hill country. Simon says, “prior to Tonic, only 5 percent of trade lambs were killed off the ewes. This season, due to the growing size of the plantain stand, the weaning draft has increased to 20 percent at 17.4kg. Alongside this, we have lifted our works ewe weight 5kg/ cwt through lambing on plantain.”

For Simon, Tonic is a tool that has delivered increased growth rates and improved carrying capacity of stock through summer and autumn. This allows him to compete with grass based flat land systems.

Aerial sowing is not without its challenges though and Simon recommends selecting areas for development early.

It is good practice to get a soil test at least 12 months prior to sowing and to start managing the selected blocks with chemical topping, to get rid of weeds and thatch early by either putting through a summer fallow or a crop (e.g. summer turnips), to break down the thatch and allow another weed spray.

Overall, Simon has observed healthier stock, with improved growth across the board. In terms of persistence, Simon is keeping an open mind as his stands are reaching 18 months old. He is impressed with the great growth and utilisation Tonic plantain offers and is looking forward to being able to utilise the added 30 hectares sown this autumn.

Setting up cereal crops for spring When it comes to determining how much nitrogen fertiliser to apply to your cereal crops in spring, you can’t beat soil testing.

Grant Bickley, Merchant Relationship Representative, Ballance AgriNutrients, says that mineral nitrogen levels in soil should be determined in mid-August, as winter leaching has generally finished by then.

“The mineral N test will give you an indication of how much nitrogen is in the soil and from that you can determine how much fertiliser nitrogen is required through the growth period to achieve your yield targets.

“Samples are taken to a depth of 60cm. This takes a little bit of time to do but Ballance has an effective drilling method for this now, so unless

you’re on stoney soils, there should be no need to get on the end of a mallet to collect your samples.”

The mineral N test measures the nitrate-N and ammonium-N content of soil and this indicates how much nitrogen is immediately available to plants. Sampling in August works best, because most winter leaching events have occurred by then and spring mineralisation of organic matter hasn’t started, so you get a realistic measure of mineral nitrogen levels.

“Your soil testing results will indicate how much nitrogen is required. It may also pay to include sulphur with that first application of nitrogen, especially if you didn’t apply elemental sulphur in autumn,” Grant says. “Sulphate

sulphur is vulnerable to loss through leaching in wetter months, so is best added in spring. With this in mind, one of the SustaiN Ammo products — SustaiN Ammo 30N or 36N — would be a good option. If potassium is also required at the end of winter – if it hasn’t been applied in the base dressing or at sowing — you could use a SustaiN K product.”

Wheat crops typically receive twothirds of their nitrogen requirements at around GS32 and the final third at GS39. An earlier, small application can be useful if your spring soil mineral N level is very low, or if establishment or tillering is poor. Barley requires an earlier application than wheat, at around GS22.

Grant also advises farmers to monitor leaf health in early spring. “Keep an eye out for any leaf discolouration as this could suggest a nutrient deficiency, especially after a wet winter. It’s important to get a diagnosis, as there are a range of factors that can cause foliage to change colour. A herbage test should be used to confirm any suspected nutrient deficiency.”

Herbage testing usually happens around GS30, when the stem extension is complete and the head of the ear emerges from the boot.

NUTRITION

Lighting in free range, small scale layers Have you ever wondered why birds in the wild only lay eggs in the spring and early summer and then cease laying as winter approaches?

This is all due to day-length or hours of daylight, as well as changes in light intensity. Birds that hatch in the spring require a shortening day-length approaching winter and an increasing day-length after mid-winter to trigger maturity and begin to lay eggs. In technical terms, this is known as photorefractoriness. The modern commercial layer has almost had this phenomenon bred out of it and given sufficient time and food, a flock of commercial layer hens will eventually reach sexual maturity and start to lay some eggs, even without light stimulation. However, production will be poor as will peak of lay. Conversely,

layers having access to natural daylight (typically in free range situations) usually do very well from late spring to mid-summer and one often notices a significant drop in egg production as autumn and winter approach. This is due to birds within the population exhibiting photorefractory behaviour and going out of lay.

Fortunately, with the use of artificial light, we can “trick” these birds into believing summer is permanent and thereby reduce the drop-off in egg production. The choice of lighting is not that critical, so incandescent, fluorescent or even modern LED lighting can be used, although it is preferable to select warm white options when using fluorescents or LEDs. In open housing typical of free range layers, the artificial light needs to complement the natural day length and

this is true of both rearing and during lay with open housing. For hens in lay, knowing the maximum day length for your region is really important. Find out when sunrise will occur and sunset on the longest day and how this changes over time. Then set the timer for the lights to come on half an hour before sunrise and stay on until the sun is up. The lights must then be turned on prior to sunset and remain on half an hour after sunset on the longest day in your region. The lights need to be bright enough, without shadows in corners, so the hens still perceive that it is daylight. A single 75 watt bulb will cover 20m² of floor space, depending on how high the ceiling is. Some trial and error may be required to arrive at the ideal amount of light the birds need for optimum production. If birds are flighty and nervous then reduce the light intensity with lower wattage bulbs. The Hy-Line website at www.hyline.com has a customised lighting programme for any location and this will work for any breed of layer.

Tossing birds a handful of whole grains, birdseed or some chopped greens in the late afternoon can help calm birds and help keep litter friable.

Tip – the earlier lights come on in the morning, the more eggs will be laid before noon. This is more difficult to achieve as one goes further south in New Zealand, since the longest day reduces this flexibility.

Ionophores used in some cattle and poultry products should not be fed to pigs. Pigs also have particular mineral, trace element and vitamin requirements, so specialist compound pig nuts are better suited to their needs than cattle, sheep or horse feeds. Correctly formulated, they offer convenience and consistency over home-mixed rations based on waste milk or vegetables like potatoes, reject grain and bakery waste into pigs. For those with more than two or three pigs, pig nuts can be ordered in costsaving 500kg bulk bags. Feeding table scraps along with pelleted feed can be a cheap and economical way to raise pigs. Under the 2005 Biosecurity Regulations, it is a legal requirement that all meat, or food waste that has come into contact with meat, must be heated to 100°C for 1 hour, to destroy any bacteria or viruses present. It is important to be aware that pigs respond to good quality palatable diets and are more susceptible to the damaging effects of mycotoxins (biological poisons produced by moulds) than ruminants and horses.
