HARRIET CAMERON Q: What is your current role at Farmlands? A: National Development Manager – Card, based in Christchurch. Q: Where are you from originally? A: The Wairarapa – I grew up on a sheep and beef farm about 40 minutes east of Masterton, in a small place called Tinui. Q: What is your favourite New Zealand getaway? A: Castlepoint Beach, about 50 minutes from Masterton. We have a house there and I love spending time with family and friends, relaxing and fishing. Q: What is the most interesting trip you have ever taken? A: I did a two week trip through the Outback from Ayers Rock to Darwin, through the Tanami Desert and the Kakadu. We also spent time in Aboriginal villages and at Victoria River Downs Station. We just parked up on the side of the road in the desert and slept in tents. Q: What is your favourite sport? A: Hockey – I have played since I was 5 and also follow the New Zealand teams pretty closely.

Astar was born and raised in Southland and is part-Irish and part-Maori (Kati Mamoe).

Born in New Zealand and growing up in a large family, Nici was cooking as soon as she could reach the bench top. “My nana and mother were so supportive and encouraging of us kids getting in the kitchen and cooking that I owe them a huge thanks.”

She trained in floristry and worked as an art teacher, floral designer and design tutor before taking a year out to write not just one but three books (yet to be published!). She then became a ‘finishing artist’. Her focus was on floral design in the many homes owned around the world by none other than the Sultan of Brunei. Exciting as it was, Astar decided to return to New Zealand and commenced working on the Good Morning show in 1998, where she set out to amaze viewers with her innovative floral, cooking and craft segments.

At eight years old her favourite make-believe game was to play host of a cooking show where she would showcase various recipes – Russian fudge, pancakes, chocolate cakes - all from the family kitchen! And just like those on a farm or an orchard, Tim Williams is working hard to prepare for when business picks up. It’s something he enjoys and something he immerses himself in, both on and off the track. “There is a fair bit involved in harness racing, as well as a fair bit of education,” Tim explains. “While I’m a race day driver, I work for a trainer during the day as well.”

To anyone looking at entering the world of harness racing, Tim says it takes a lot more than just skill to have longevity in the business. “You probably want to have a good passion for it. Finding staff has been an issue for the rural sector ever since the road to urban migration was repaved and made into a highway. As more families packed up and swapped the fence posts for footpaths, those left behind had to find the manpower to maintain their properties. While some have been fortunate enough to reverse the drain – attracting not only new staff to their property but families to their area – others have tried increasingly attractive incentives to recruit workers. New accommodation, increased wages … no matter the size of the carrot, in some cases it is not enough to lure the desired staff. Increasingly, the rural sector has looked overseas to fill the skill shortage gap. International workers are not only ready and willing to contribute positively to New Zealand rural agribusiness – sometimes they are doing so for their own leisure and experience. It may not have the same ring to it as tourism hot spots like Queenstown but the Waitaha Valley, 50km from Hokitika, has plenty of tourists stopping in to look around – and lend a hand. Waitaha Valley is where you will find Stu Davidson, who for the past 20 years has invited backpackers and travellers from around the world to his 210 (mostly Jersey) cow dairy farm.

The travellers come as part of the Willing Workers On Organic Farms (known as WWOOFing) and Help Exchange networks. In exchange for free meals and accommodation, the guests chip in to help around the property. Some stay a day. Some stay a month. All leave an impression on Stu. “I’ve been on this property almost all of my life,” explains Stu. “I took over the farm from my parents, who bought it when I was about 7. My grandparents lived on another farm up the valley.” Nowadays, Waitaha Valley is a small farming area – as Stu describes it, “it has 11 dairy farms, one farm with a few sheep and that’s about it”. Given its location, he had made a habit of helping those stranded in the area – people hitchhiking or biking, who were caught in wet weather with nowhere to stay. Stu would offer them a bed for the night, to dry off before continuing on their journey. “One day, I picked up this American chap – he was a bit of a character. Anyway, he told me I should sign up for this | Japanese worker, Yoko Shinozaki makes a new friend.

With no fax or email, he gets phone calls continuously – sometimes months in advance, sometimes the day before. “If people call up, we’ll tell them we’re doing the A&P Shows

“Many have come back to visit and some have come back on holiday with friends, or brought their whole family along.” For another shareholder, the visitors stem from just one country – Samoa. Geoff Lewis has an affinity for the people of Samoa that is more than just a working relationship. Rather than a simple employee/employer financial transaction, Geoff wants to help them take back skills that help them develop their own communities and economy. “The economies in the Pacific Islands are not exactly strong, so while they are taking wealth home, the challenge is to turn it into a business,” Geoff says. The workers come to Lewis Farms, just outside of Levin, to work as harvesters in the 80ha of asparagus, which is then supplied to Horowhenua-based asparagus packing and marketing company, Tender Tips. Geoff says Tender Tips has its own unique workforce. “Tender Tips operates with about 60 seasonal staff, all of them New Zealanders and some of them local to Horowhenua,” Geoff explains. “But many of them are campers, the New Zealand version of ‘grey nomads’. These people are predominantly older singles or couples, who work as seasonal workers throughout New Zealand. “Depending on the season, they will work kiwifruit in Bay of Plenty, pipfruit harvesting in Hawke’s Bay and Nelson, work the asparagus harvest in Horowhenua and summerfruit harvest in Central Otago.” | Stu Davidson and Hijiri Kawai have a chance to reflect.

Cattle lice in New Zealand Background LICE NUMBERS

Lice in both beef and dairy cattle cause irritation, which leads to scratching and licking and can damage the skin of cattle, as well as cause annoyance. There is no New Zealand evidence that lice in cattle cause weight loss, however farmers have reported anecdotally that there are production losses in animals with lice. There are four species of lice that affect cattle in New Zealand - but only two main species that cause a problem:

The lice numbers are highest in the winter, when the climate suits the survival of lice and this also coincides with the cattle having a thick coat. Also, as winter is a time of feed restriction and close contact, this may facilitate spread.

2. Linognathus vituli: a sucking lice, which sucks blood. They are generally found on younger stock. All these lice are “host specific” and stay on cattle and cannot live on sheep.

BLAZE

BLAZE contains 15g/L of deltamethrin, the most recent and effective of Synthetic Pyrethroids (SPs). It acts as a repellent and also prevents flies from landing and feeding. BLAZE causes rapid paralysis and death of both lice and flies, mainly due to them coming into contact with the active chemical but also through ingestion of it.

Life cycle This approximately 5 week (34-36 days) cycle has three stages – egg, nymph and adult. Females live approximately 30 days and lay one egg a day on average, which hatch 8-10 days later. This produces the first stage nymph - the nymph will moult three times as it grows into an adult. The whole process must occur on the animal. Lice do not jump or survive on fences or yards for more than a few days, hence it requires close contact for transfer to occur.

Tailored dairy farm fertiliser programmes Spring is when most dairy farmers apply the majority of their fertiliser. Getting it right is key to farm performance, so before you make any decisions about what to apply, make sure you get some good advice, so you end up with a fertiliser programme that will give you the best return for your investment. “Most dairy farmers apply approximately two thirds of their maintenance fertiliser in the spring (post calving) and one third in the autumn. Ideally, fertiliser needs should be determined by a nutrient budget, one component of which is a soil test,” Ballance Merchant Relationship Representative, Grant Gillard says. Soil testing should be carried out regularly, at the same time of the year, so that you can gauge the trends in nutrient levels over time. Once you have entered the results in a nutrient budget, you will be able to tailor your programme to fit the different blocks on your farm, for example effluent, established or new pasture blocks.

However, he says some typical dairy maintenance product options and rates for spring are Superten (350-450kg/ha), Superten 10K (375-475kg/ha), Pasturezeal G2 10K (375-500kg/ha) or Pasturezeal G2 Impact (275-375kg/ha).

Unique new ryegrass put to the test in Central Otago Maximising pasture persistence and production in Central Otago is often easier said than done with perennial ryegrass. But a new cultivar purpose bred for sheep and beef could be just the advance one farming partnership is looking for. With 1,720ha under sheep and dairy support at Moa Flat, near Ettrick, brothers Aaron and Glenn Watson need plenty of high quality grass that can survive their altitude, light free draining soils, frequent summer droughts and cold winters. They’re keen to try new things to improve pasture performance, so when their Farmlands TFO Andrew Brown told them last spring he was looking for a trial site for a unique new ryegrass, they promptly made a 7ha paddock available. Eight months down the track, Rohan SPR (short for spreading perennial

ryegrass) has got off to a good start, with impressive growth and palatability. It’s been grazed every 14 days since finishing lambs were weaned onto it mid January and DM yields are up to double those of the existing 5 year old ryegrass pasture next door, according to pasture measurements being taken by Agriseeds agronomist Janet Montgomery. Glenn and Aaron say they’ve been careful to look after Rohan SPR in this first year. “We’ve never nailed it to the gunnels – we’d leave the lambs on it until they got down to a cover of about 500mm then take them off.” If Rohan SPR continues to impress, it could be the ryegrass species they’re looking for to bridge the gap with their specialist dryland species. “Traditionally this has been rye and clover country. But with the more challenging seasons we’ve been

having, ordinary ryegrass is just not lasting. Dry matter drops by at least half after a hard year and then we’ve got grass grub and porina to deal with as well. “We’ve moved to lucerne and fescue in some paddocks but we still need ryegrass on our colder country, where rainfall is a bit more reliable – that’s why we’re trying Rohan. It’s early days yet, as it was only sown in October but we’re impressed. Stock like it too.” The brothers aim to increase DM production and renew their pastures more frequently, to keep the farm producing well. This year 5,300 Romney ewes went to the ram and surplus lambs will be finished for slaughter, between early December and late March. The farm also carries 800-1,200 flock replacements, winters 2,100 dairy cows and runs 300 dairy heifers from May to May. In addition, Glenn and Aaron run 120 breeding bulls a year. All pastures are sown post crop, using a roller drill. Rohan SPR is a new ryegrass from Agriseeds, bred specifically to provide persistent, resilient, easy care pasture for extensive farm systems. Pasture persistence against grass grub and porina now a reality If there was any doubts as to the effectiveness of Cropmark’s new endophyte “GrubOUT® U2” in protecting pasture against grass grub and porina attack then those doubts should be dispelled by a pasture trial at Mandeville, near Gore. The pasture trial, which was sown 4 years ago to evaluate the persistence of different grass endophytes, has this year sustained heavy infestations of grass grub and porina. There are now very noticeable differences in the persistence of the different grasses and endophytes being tested. Most grasses in the trial have been devastated by the grass grub and porina. But not the grass containing the GrubOUT® U2. It appears to be unaffected by the very heavy infestations of grass grub and porina. Property owners Rhys and Michelle Houghton have been most impressed with the persistence of the GrubOUT® U2 endophyte. Their 62 hectare property has serious ongoing problems with grass grub and porina and lack of persistence of pastures is a serious issue to them. Because of the damage to the rest of the paddock, Rhys is faced with having to renovate the paddock this spring. “Grass Grub in particular is a serious problem for us. Chris has used both Rivage and Splendide and has achieved outstanding yields. This is due to his location, the preparation of his paddocks and ensuring corners are not cut with his inputs and timings.

Argentinian soy hulls are now available in New Zealand as a pellet. Their high fibre content makes the pellets friable but acceptability to cows is reportedly good.
