FROM THE ACTING CEO This year has certainly been one for the elements. From severe drought to freezing temperatures and flooding, our shareholders have endured the full spectrum in 2015.

It would be easy to focus on things that have gone wrong during times like this – but the stories I have been hearing from around the country are anything but negative.

Community is alive and well in rural New Zealand. It is heartening to hear so many stories about shareholders getting stuck in and helping each other, making the tougher times a little bit easier for those that need it most.

There are the stories from North Canterbury, where shareholders facing drought were sent excess grazing from other areas around the South Island.

There is the recent story of Farmlands and Young Farmers working together to help farmers in Wanganui whose properties suffered extensive flood damage. We will profile this in a later issue.

Whatever the reason for helping, the actions are the real story. It would be easy to focus on our own backyards – but that’s not the Kiwi way.

We are more likely to look over the fence and see who needs a hand – and then offer.

Working together makes the tougher times more bearable. The things that can’t be replaced – like friendships and the sense of community – are made of material stronger than any storm.

INGREDIENTS 1 3-4 pound boneless roast beef (chuck or round roast) 1 cup beef broth ½ cup balsamic vinegar 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

METHOD 1. Place roast beef into the insert of your slow cooker. In a measuring cup, mix together all remaining ingredients. Pour over roast beef and set the timer for your slow cooker (4 hours on High or 6-8 hours on Low).

2. Once roast beef has cooked, remove from slow cooker with

Wall to wall style Dazzling décor and DIY is what Alex and Corban Walls do – and they do it well.

From a young age, born and bred Aucklander Alex loved fashion design and fashion styling, so when it came time for her to make a change in career, interior design seemed like the natural choice.

“I’d been working in a job that I had been in for about 8 years, so I was ready for a change,” she says.

“I needed something drastic to make me move out of the job.”

Reality television show The Block NZ was that something. The show was the couple’s first ever attempt at working as a team on a large design project – and they took out the competition.

“I just applied without Corban really being that into it,” Alex says.

“I knew that together we would make a good team.”

She says her fashion design background translated easily into interior design, as she was still dealing with colours, textures and patterns.

“When I applied for The Block NZ, I knew I was going to be bringing that skill,” she says. Corban, on the other hand, brings the practical skill to their team – he is a mechanical engineer by trade.

“I just knew that our skills would work quite well.”

| Best seats in the house: these judges are easier to please.

New Zealand sustains a concerted effort when it comes to fostering the next generation of rural leaders. For all the publicity that is shone on foreign ownership, the spotlight can just as easily be turned around and focused on the young people that enter farming contests each and every year.

For two of these major awards – the Ahuwhenua Trophy and Young Farmer of the Year – the gate has closed on another year. The contests are complete and awards have been handed out. In the case of Young Farmer of the Year, the televised final brought one of the most dramatic deciders in the contest’s history.

But after the cameras have stopped rolling and clicking, or the trophies have been locked away in the cabinet, those who emerge victorious still have a reputation, mantle and legacy to uphold and add to. Hannah Wallace and Matt Bell cemented their respective reputations by being ‘second time lucky’, winning their respective awards at their second attempt.

For Hannah, the Ahuwhenua Young Maori Farmer of the Year, the success came after a few years of education and a change of vocation.

“I entered back in 2012 when it was the dairy awards (Young Maori Dairy Farmer Competition) and I used to go dairy farming,” Hannah explains. “But I never made it very far – I didn’t even get to meet the judges!”

Fast forward to 2015 and Hannah has become the first

woman to ever win the award. Having shifted away from dairy, she now shares her time across two sheep and beef operations – Ardkeen’s 627ha Greenstone Farm, operated by her parents Richard and Harmony Wallace – and Whakaki’s 1,080ha Rotonui Station, managed by her partner, Jeremy Bright.

Spreading her time between the two northern Hawke’s Bay operations seems like an arduous task but as Hannah attests, farming is all she has ever wanted to do. The thirst for knowledge is strong.

“I’d like to continue in farming and if a door opens, I’m definitely going to jump at the opportunity to learn more,” she says. “But I’m happy with what I’m doing at the moment.”

When announcing the result, Hannah’s strong conviction to the sheep and beef industry was cited as a reason for her success. A commitment to training – Hannah has been with Primary ITO for the past 4 years – was another feature.

Whatever the reasons for success, Hannah says there were plenty of nerves throughout the selection process.

“After you’ve been selected, the judges set up a date and come around to meet you. They ask you a few questions – it’s pretty daunting – but not as bad as it could be!”

Hannah explained her goals for the future, as well as explaining her history in the primary sector. Her answers created a path straight to the awards dinner at Wanganui, where she says the feeling of winning was “indescribable”.

“I didn’t know beforehand that I was going to win, which was

Since being awarded the Young Maori Farmer of the Year, Hannah has been kept busy with travel, networking – and of course work.

“I went to Fieldays and spoke at an AgResearch dinner. Then there’s the going back to work and being hit with a million questions,” she says.

As everyone’s questions die down, Hannah has some of her own. Education is high on her mind, as is sticking to sheep and beef and hopefully getting a farm of her own.

“I’m quite interested in learning more about the cropping side of things and learning more about grazing. I want to get my knowledge up on that.”

“The biggest thing I did differently was I relaxed and actually enjoyed it,” he says. “The first time I was a bit overawed but this time I made sure I was going to enjoy it – I wasn’t sitting there going ‘this is my last shot, I have to get it’.”

The second factor was dedicating a large amount of time to the theoretical side of the competition.

“I knew that in other areas of the competition while I wasn’t the strongest, I’d be among the points at the end,” he explains. “So I really spent a huge amount of time on the questions. I don’t know how many thousands of hours I spent on questions.”

After the multi-faceted competition reached its end, Matt, from Hinds, found himself in a tie with the East Coast representative, Sully Alsop. The contest was decided on a count-back from the practical day scores, which saw Matt emerge victorious.

“People who know me know I’m never short of having something to say – but I couldn’t say anything for the first 5 minutes after winning,” Matt says. “I was just blown away, excited, relieved – I’m still just slowly easing my way into it (realising the accomplishment). It is just phenomenal, the amount of people that called or have got in touch to say congratulations.”

“After winning the whole competition, it’s amazing how well known it is,” he says. “I know some of the jobs I’ve applied for, I don’t think I would have got the interview without the Young Farmer contest.

They may be out with shareholders onfarm or serving customers in-store but when a call comes in, they respond to it.

Farmlands Te Kuiti Business Manager Ashley Waghorn has been volunteering for search and rescue operations for more than 25 years.

A keen hunter and fisherman, Ashley joined the Waitomo Search and Rescue unit when he was 17, wanting to use his outdoor experience to help others.

“It’s just the simple fact of making a difference,” he says.

“If somebody’s in trouble for whatever reason, along with the rest of the team, you just want to be there to help and achieve the best possible outcome.”

Farmlands Balclutha Senior Salesperson Jason Michie says a great love for the outdoors and a chance to give back prompted him to get involved with the Clutha Search and Rescue unit around 6 years ago.

“It’s just about giving something back to the community really,” he says.

As a Group Training Officer, Jason organises trainings to upskill members of the group. He says they try to do training once a month and recently some of them have been practicing abseiling in the dark and taking stretchers up and down cliffs. Although the Clutha Search and Rescue unit haven’t had many callouts in the past few years, they need to be prepared, as they back up other search and rescue crews in the area.

Cattle tick control in spring We are about to enter the time of the year when tick numbers begin to increase and failure to implement control measures now will make it virtually impossible to catch up later on.

In addition to the normal animal health issues that are brought about by tick infestation, including anaemia, skin irritation and hide damage, ticks also act as transmitters (vectors) for the blood-borne disease caused by Theileria orientalis. The symptoms of Theileria infection are also most commonly seen during the spring period and include lost production and deaths.

MPI has done a good job so far monitoring Theileria outbreaks, as this disease has spread by movements of infected stock and infected ticks over the whole of the North Island, plus sporadic

locations in the South Island. This makes a strong case for pre-movement Bayticol treatments of all stock going from a high to a low tick area, or to a Theileria free area, whether or not ticks are visible.

On-farm tick control should also consider your area and status. The endemically stable Northland regions should utilise Bayticol treatments over the spring to keep tick numbers down and hopefully reduce the impact of high infestations and limit tick population build.

In unstable areas of the North Island, tick treatments can be specifically important during the high risk spring period where ticks are most active and stock are stressed and susceptible to developing disease. Tick monitoring measures are useful for guiding how and when to treat with Bayticol, however if a standardised approach is required, treat with Bayticol in the spring pre and post-calving (July to

Prepare well to secure days in-milk Pre-calving, birthing and cycling are particularly demanding periods for any dairy cow. Good management requires implementation of intensive trace element supplementation before and during the stress periods. Cows need sufficient reserves to support them during the calving process, to mating and into summer lactation.

Arguably there is money to be made in cows achieving and holding peak lactation and getting in-calf again. Regularly undertake blood tests and ask for liver tests when culling cows. Monitoring trace element status in cows provides a mechanism to make informed decisions.

The critical trace elements to consider are:

Selenium: Retained after birth, infertility, ill-thrift, poor immune responses and reduced milk production are all symptoms of a selenium deficiency. One of the critical elements cows need on a daily basis to offset these animal issues.

Copper: Copper is also required daily and is essential for the formation of 10 vital enzymes. Dairy cows are particularly susceptible to copper deficiency and it shows in a poor reproductive system, failure to be oestrous and poor growth rate.

Cobalt: Cobalt is required daily and is essential for the formation of vitamin B12, a vital enzyme in the utilisation of the energy content of food and animal growth.

If cows exhibit lethargic tendencies and

a lack of drive to graze, they are probably cobalt deficient.

Iodine: The presence of iodine is essential for the proper function of the thyroid gland.

Avoid low hormone production, as this will significantly impact on reproduction outcomes, foetal survival and foetal development.

Everyone should have addressed the magnesium and calcium needs by this time of the season but not to be forgotten is the key trace elements that support milk production and reproduction. We need to get it right from the onset otherwise the costs are too high.

Glyphosate resistance?

Glyphosate was originally discovered by Swiss chemist Henri Martin in 1950 but it was not until 1970 that another scientist, John Franz, synthesised the molecule “glyphosate”. This was then patented

by Monsanto as the active ingredient for the herbicide Roundup®. Prior to the introduction of Roundup to the market, Paraquat, Amitrole and cultivation were the main weed control options for horticulturalists. Roundup offered growers a broad-spectrum perennial herbicide, which had a much safer environmental and user toxicity than those being used at the time. However, the cost of the brand Roundup remained relatively expensive, so many growers continued to use a mix of herbicide options in their programmes.

With conclusive evidence showing translocation out of the leaf into surrounding tissues begins 15 minutes after application, growers can have comfort knowing the addition of WETCIT will get the glyphosate molecule into the plant, particularly when inclement weather is forecast.

Fodder beet takes off With land resource limited, many farmers are looking at ways to grow more dry matter within the same area.

Due to this, fodder beet has seen a surge in popularity across the country and is being used widely across livestock classes, not just for wintering dairy cows.

Like an increasing number of New Zealand farmers, Matt and Tory Simpson of Ranui Station at Albury have grown fodder beet for the first time. Although the inputs and need for early monitoring can be relatively intensive, they have been extremely impressed with how their fodder beet has performed, especially in a very testing dry season.

Matt and Tory are in the heart of South Canterbury, 600m above sea level, running a 4,000ha sheep and beef breeding unit, with 2,900 ewes, 600 hoggets, 140 Hereford cows, 60 rising 2 year cattle and 130 calves.

Being prepared and having time to plan is a big advantage when growing fodder beet. It is important to check and correct any soil deficiencies, including pH and communicate with the drilling contractor and spray contractors. A delay of only a couple of days with herbicide applications can advance the weeds enough to make them difficult to control.

Matt and Tory’s Jamon fodder beet was precision sown on 7th November, with the dryland Jamon crop averaging a yield of 18t/ha. “It held on and performed very well in a tough season,” says Matt. While beet will not totally replace the brassica they grow, it is a great rotation option and allows diversity within their system. Next year Matt and Tory are looking to increase their fodder beet to 10ha, to enable them to graze their bulls on the crop for longer.
