FROM THE ACTING CEO This year has certainly been one for the elements. From severe drought to freezing temperatures and flooding, our shareholders have endured the full spectrum in 2015. It would be easy to focus on things that have gone wrong during times like this – but the stories I have been hearing from around the country are anything but negative. Community is alive and well in rural New Zealand. It is heartening to hear so many stories about shareholders getting stuck in and helping each other, making the tougher times a little bit easier for those that need it most. There are the stories from North Canterbury, where shareholders facing drought were sent excess grazing from other areas around the South Island. There is the recent story of Farmlands and Young Farmers working together to help farmers in Wanganui whose properties suffered extensive flood damage. We will profile this in a later issue. Whatever the reason for helping, the actions are the real story. It would be easy to focus on our own backyards – but that’s not the Kiwi way. We are more likely to look over the fence and see who needs a hand – and then offer. Working together makes the tougher times more bearable. The things that can’t be replaced – like friendships and the sense of community – are made of material stronger than any storm.

WHAT’S ON?

Wall to wall style Dazzling décor and DIY is what Alex and Corban Walls do – and they do it well. From a young age, born and bred Aucklander Alex loved fashion design and fashion styling, so when it came time for her to make a change in career, interior design seemed like the natural choice. “I’d been working in a job that I had been in for about 8 years, so I was ready for a change,” she says. “I needed something drastic to make me move out of the job.” Reality television show The Block NZ was that something. The show was the couple’s first ever attempt at working as a team on a large design project – and they took out the competition. “I just applied without Corban really being that into it,” Alex says. “I knew that together we would make a good team.” She says her fashion design background translated easily into interior design, as she was still dealing with colours, textures and patterns. “When I applied for The Block NZ, I knew I was going to be bringing that skill,” she says. Corban, on the other hand, brings the practical skill to their team – he is a mechanical engineer by trade. “I just knew that our skills would work quite well.”

Alex and Corban’s top tips for dazzling décor! De-clutter your space It’s quite easy to add bits and pieces to a room because you like all of the items individually but once you put them together and they don’t all match, it can make the room feel cluttered. Clutter can also create a stressful-feeling environment.

Decide an emotion It’s really important to know exactly how you want to feel when you are in the room. For example, a lounge – you want to relax, put your feet up and feel like you’re unwinding from a big day, so there are things that you can do in the room design to ensure that emotion is conveyed.

| Best seats in the house: these judges are easier to please.

New Zealand sustains a concerted effort when it comes to fostering the next generation of rural leaders. For all the publicity that is shone on foreign ownership, the spotlight can just as easily be turned around and focused on the young people that enter farming contests each and every year. For two of these major awards – the Ahuwhenua Trophy and Young Farmer of the Year – the gate has closed on another year. The contests are complete and awards have been handed out. In the case of Young Farmer of the Year, the televised final brought one of the most dramatic deciders in the contest’s history. But after the cameras have stopped rolling and clicking, or the trophies have been locked away in the cabinet, those who emerge victorious still have a reputation, mantle and legacy to uphold and add to. Hannah Wallace and Matt Bell cemented their respective reputations by being ‘second time lucky’, winning their respective awards at their second attempt. For Hannah, the Ahuwhenua Young Maori Farmer of the Year, the success came after a few years of education and a change of vocation. “I entered back in 2012 when it was the dairy awards (Young Maori Dairy Farmer Competition) and I used to go dairy farming,” Hannah explains. “But I never made it very far – I didn’t even get to meet the judges!” Fast forward to 2015 and Hannah has become the first

woman to ever win the award. Having shifted away from dairy, she now shares her time across two sheep and beef operations – Ardkeen’s 627ha Greenstone Farm, operated by her parents Richard and Harmony Wallace – and Whakaki’s 1,080ha Rotonui Station, managed by her partner, Jeremy Bright. Spreading her time between the two northern Hawke’s Bay operations seems like an arduous task but as Hannah attests, farming is all she has ever wanted to do. The thirst for knowledge is strong. “I’d like to continue in farming and if a door opens, I’m definitely going to jump at the opportunity to learn more,” she says. “But I’m happy with what I’m doing at the moment.” When announcing the result, Hannah’s strong conviction to the sheep and beef industry was cited as a reason for her success. A commitment to training – Hannah has been with Primary ITO for the past 4 years – was another feature.

“I’d like to continue in farming

and if a door opens, I’m definitely going to jump at the opportunity to learn more”

Whatever the reasons for success, Hannah says there were plenty of nerves throughout the selection process. “After you’ve been selected, the judges set up a date and come around to meet you. They ask you a few questions – it’s pretty daunting – but not as bad as it could be!” Hannah explained her goals for the future, as well as explaining her history in the primary sector. Her answers created a path straight to the awards dinner at Wanganui, where she says the feeling of winning was “indescribable”. “I didn’t know beforehand that I was going to win, which was

good actually, because you can just sit back and enjoy the night,” she says. Since being awarded the Young Maori Farmer of the Year, Hannah has been kept busy with travel, networking – and of course work. “I went to Fieldays and spoke at an AgResearch dinner. Then there’s the going back to work and being hit with a million questions,” she says. As everyone’s questions die down, Hannah has some of her own. Education is high on her mind, as is sticking to sheep and beef and hopefully getting a farm of her own. “I’m quite interested in learning more about the cropping side of things and learning more about grazing. I want to get my knowledge up on that.”

| Hannah splits her time between two different farms.

“The biggest thing I did differently was I relaxed and actually enjoyed it,” he says. “The first time I was a bit overawed but this time I made sure I was going to enjoy it – I wasn’t sitting there going ‘this is my last shot, I have to get it’.” The second factor was dedicating a large amount of time to the theoretical side of the competition. “I knew that in other areas of the competition while I wasn’t the strongest, I’d be among the points at the end,” he explains. “So I really spent a huge amount of time on the questions. I don’t know how many thousands of hours I spent on questions.” The final itself will go down as one for the record books. After the multi-faceted competition reached its end, Matt, from Hinds, found himself in a tie with the East Coast representative, Sully Alsop. The contest was decided on a count-back from the practical day scores, which saw Matt emerge victorious. “People who know me know I’m never short of having something to say – but I couldn’t say anything for the first 5 minutes after winning,” Matt says. “I was just blown away, excited, relieved – I’m still just slowly easing my way into it (realising the accomplishment). It is just phenomenal, the amount of people that called or have got in touch to say congratulations.” | 2015 Young Farmer of the Year, Matt Bell. Credit: NZYF.

provided a readymade opportunity to meet people and he believes its contribution to New Zealand farming is immense.

“It’s one of those cliché lines but with the contests, the amount of work you put in is what you’ll get back.”

“Dairy is a split passion – my passion is farming,” he explains. “I don’t think it would worry me what I was doing – sheep or beef, cropping, sheep or dairying – but dairying gives me the best opportunity to get where I want to be in terms of ownership. “I really do enjoy dairying, there’s a lot to it. The career progression in farming is really good and the ability to work your way up just through hard work – the more you put in

“The whole organisation is superb,” he says. “I’ve got friends from Young Farmers that will be friends for life. At a district level, you’re just competing against your mates, so it’s not very daunting. “I can’t recommend enough for people to get involved in that.” Matt says the Young Farmer of the Year competition has changed his profile immeasurably, even before winning. “After winning the whole competition, it’s amazing how well known it is,” he says. “I know some of the jobs I’ve applied for, I don’t think I would have got the interview without the Young Farmer contest. “It’s one of those cliché lines but with the contests, the amount of work you put in is what you’ll get back.”

with hard work, the quicker you move up that ladder.” Amongst the prizes Matt has received from his win is entry into the Kellogg Rural Leadership Programme. Matt describes the programme as “something I’ve always looked at” – and is looking forward to meeting the diverse range of people who take part.

CO-OPERATIVE NEWS

Volunteers always prepared In last month’s Farmlander, we profiled some of our shareholders who give their valuable time to volunteer in their communities, so this month we wanted to acknowledge our staff that do the same. They may be out with shareholders onfarm or serving customers in-store but when a call comes in, they respond to it. Farmlands Te Kuiti Business Manager Ashley Waghorn has been volunteering for search and rescue operations for more than 25 years. A keen hunter and fisherman, Ashley joined the Waitomo Search and Rescue unit when he was 17, wanting to use his outdoor experience to help others. “It’s just the simple fact of making a difference,” he says. “If somebody’s in trouble for whatever reason, along with the rest of the team, you just want to be there to help and achieve the best possible outcome.” Ashley is currently the Vice President of the Waitomo Search and Rescue Committee but insists he is just another

people he works with are supportive of him any time he needs to shoot off to answer a callout. “It’s just something you do,” he says. It’s a similar story down south. Farmlands Balclutha Senior Salesperson Jason Michie says a great love for the outdoors and a chance to give back prompted him to get involved with the Clutha Search and Rescue unit around 6 years ago. “It’s just about giving something back to the community really,” he says. As a Group Training Officer, Jason organises trainings to upskill members of the group. He says they try to do training once a month and recently some of them have been practicing abseiling in the dark and taking stretchers up and down cliffs. Although the Clutha Search and Rescue unit haven’t had many callouts in the past few years, they need to be prepared, as they back up other search and rescue crews in the area. “If 24 hours have gone past and their teams are exhausted, we get called in to provide back up,” Jason explains. There are a few callouts that stick in Jason’s mind, especially ones where the outcome has not been positive. However, he remembers one callout that was particularly strange – when he was called in to assist Catlins Search and

Feeding game birds The fundamental “building blocks” of nutrient requirements for all animals are protein (amino acids), energy (carbohydrates and fats), vitamins and minerals. However, unlike many other animals, birds have the ability to select feed and feed ingredients extremely well to meet their nutritional requirements. For this reason, the NRM range of feeds – which includes the Meat Bird Crumble, Pullet Grower and Peck ‘n Lay – are suitable to use in combination with each other or individually with other sources of protein rich raw materials, such as meat and bone meal for a wide range of poultry or game birds such as ducks, turkeys, pheasant and quail.

Calf rearing – building better outcomes Giving your replacement heifers the best start now provides the platform for highly productive dairy cows in the future. With the percentage of cows artificially inseminated currently sitting at 73 percent, these heifers are likely to be genetically better than the herd they are entering. A poor start to life can reduce the lifetime milk production of a cow by 10-15 percent year on year. The calf rearing fundamentals of colostrum, immunity, rumen development and weaning weights are all underpinned with careful hygiene and ensuring calves get the nutrients they need to thrive. To get calves off to the best start and optimise lifetime milk potential, new formulations of TopCalf Formula 20 and TopCalf Formula 16 have been introduced to the market this season. Both formulations include new combinations of palatants to ensure ease of uptake by young calves. They also include Diamond V XPC® for the first time.

The inclusion of Diamond V® in calf

data from Dairy New Zealand shows

• Greater change in hip width and wither height. • Increase in dry matter intake on starter feed. • Reduced mortality rates via stimulation of immune function. All of these will help meet development targets. Successfully rearing dairy replacement heifers means critical targets need to be met throughout the next 2 years, to ensure cows enter the herd capable of meeting their genetic potential. Targets revolve around lean tissue development and frame growth. Importantly, lean tissue development goes hand in hand with mammary tissue development and this starts from day 1. If lean tissue development is not meeting breed requirements, the mammary tissue will not be either. And that reduces lifetime milk potential. Cows should be entering the herd at 100 percent of their expected weight and frame. This will ensure potential productivity is optimised, fewer health issues through calving and early

farm working expenses per cow at $1,631.00. It is important to understand this in the context of calf rearing: If it costs $1,800.00 to get a heifer to its first milking season then it costs $1,631.00 to milk it for the first lactation. It has cost $3,431.00 by the time it reaches 3 years of age. At a $5.25/kgMS pay-out it will return $1,947.75 (based on national average production of 371kgMS). If 12.4 percent of 2-3 year olds are culled due to issues largely attributed to not being fully grown before entering the herd, this generates a significant loss — $19,171.40/100 cows. Paying attention to detail, including good nutrition, when the calf is young and remaining focused on meeting targets over the next 2 years will improve milk production in the first season. It will also reduce the number and cost of culls in the 2-3 year old age group. That’s certainly an investment worth having. Article supplied by Inghams.

Develop the rumen for life Fibre is absolutely essential in the calf shed for rumen development. Ruminants require quality fibre in the diet to maximise production and maintain health by sustaining a stable environment within the rumen. The focus of calf rearing should be to rear a calf to perform on pasture. If the calves you are rearing need to achieve maximum milk or beef production from pasture then setting the rumen up for life with quality fibre early cannot be overemphasised. But both fibre quality and form are paramount. Poor quality fibres like straw and hay, especially if long stemmed, are indigestible in a young calf. These bulky fibres remain in the rumen until the calf can ruminate (chew cud) enough to grind it down. This takes up valuable space needed for the high energy and high protein feeds that fuel calf growth, especially when milk is restricted. Even when chopped, these fibre types provide a limited nutrient supply for rumen

Maximise feed efficiency Following calving, mating is the next big challenge for cows and is crucial for farm profitability. Maintaining or improving cow condition is a key part of better cow cycling and conception and efficient conversion of feed can help achieve this. ANIMAL MANAGEMENT

Cattle tick control in spring We are about to enter the time of the year when tick numbers begin to increase and failure to implement control measures now will make it virtually impossible to catch up later on. In addition to the normal animal health issues that are brought about by tick infestation, including anaemia, skin irritation and hide damage, ticks also act as transmitters (vectors) for the blood-borne disease caused by Theileria orientalis. The symptoms of Theileria infection are also most commonly seen during the spring period and include lost production and deaths. MPI has done a good job so far monitoring Theileria outbreaks, as this disease has spread by movements of infected stock and infected ticks over the whole of the North Island, plus sporadic

locations in the South Island. This makes a strong case for pre-movement Bayticol treatments of all stock going from a high to a low tick area, or to a Theileria free area, whether or not ticks are visible. On-farm tick control should also consider your area and status. The endemically stable Northland regions should utilise Bayticol treatments over the spring to keep tick numbers down and hopefully reduce the impact of high infestations and limit tick population build. In unstable areas of the North Island, tick treatments can be specifically important during the high risk spring period where ticks are most active and stock are stressed and susceptible to developing disease. Tick monitoring measures are useful for guiding how and when to treat with Bayticol, however if a standardised approach is required, treat with Bayticol in the spring pre and post-calving (July to

Bayticol treatments are also recommended in combination with other tick control strategies, such as grazing pasture with other species before exposing cattle (e.g. grazing with Seraphos treated sheep) and keeping sward length low, as this is a less hospitable environment for ticks. You can never eliminate ticks from the environment as the vast proportion of their lifecycle is spent in and on the ground, where it is very hard to treat them at all. Whilst you’re never going to have 100 percent protection, you can certainly limit the risk if you can reduce the likelihood that stock are bitten by ticks. Article supplied by Bayer.

Field trial demonstrates proven superiority New data from a New Zealand field trial shows more evidence that Multine is a superior 5-in-1 vaccine. This trial looked at antibody response in lambs. Antibodies are what give animals the ability to fight disease. On the back of an envelope: • The trial shows lambs receive more antibodies against Pulpy Kidney and tetanus when ewes received a pre-lamb Multine shot, compared to ewes receiving Ultravac® 5-in-1. • Lambs responded much better to Multine at tailing. • The trial data supports using Multine at tailing and weaning, as lambs that receive Multine show superior antibody levels during this high-risk time. For ewes having multiples, the colostrum is divided between two or three lambs. So, the higher the amount of

tetanus antibodies the lambs got from colostrum following the pre-lamb dam shot was much greater with Multine than with Ultravac. This means ewes vaccinated with Multine pass on more antibodies for their lambs than those vaccinated with Ultravac.

DAIRY MANAGEMENT

Prepare well to secure days in-milk Pre-calving, birthing and cycling are particularly demanding periods for any dairy cow. Good management requires implementation of intensive trace element supplementation before and during the stress periods. Cows need sufficient reserves to support them during the calving process, to mating and into summer lactation. Arguably there is money to be made in cows achieving and holding peak lactation and getting in-calf again. Regularly undertake blood tests and ask for liver tests when culling cows. Monitoring trace element status in cows provides a mechanism to make informed decisions. The critical trace elements to consider are:

Selenium: Retained after birth, infertility, ill-thrift, poor immune responses and reduced milk production are all symptoms of a selenium deficiency. One of the critical elements cows need on a daily basis to offset these animal issues. Copper: Copper is also required daily and is essential for the formation of 10 vital enzymes. Dairy cows are particularly susceptible to copper deficiency and it shows in a poor reproductive system, failure to be oestrous and poor growth rate. Cobalt: Cobalt is required daily and is essential for the formation of vitamin B12, a vital enzyme in the utilisation of the energy content of food and animal growth. If cows exhibit lethargic tendencies and

a lack of drive to graze, they are probably cobalt deficient. Iodine: The presence of iodine is essential for the proper function of the thyroid gland. Avoid low hormone production, as this will significantly impact on reproduction outcomes, foetal survival and foetal development. Everyone should have addressed the magnesium and calcium needs by this time of the season but not to be forgotten is the key trace elements that support milk production and reproduction. We need to get it right from the onset otherwise the costs are too high. Article supplied by Bell-Booth.

Is infertility costing you? Underweight animals, cows with low trace element status and diseases associated with lameness and mastitis have a causal effect on lowering fertility. To assist in offsetting the stress associated with these issues, we need to provide the cow with essential elements that prepare it for reproduction, reduce the incidences of absorptions and achieve an acceptable result after the first two rounds of mating. Nutrimol 4n1 contains the same compounds contained in Nutrimol Classic to increase heat strength and improve submission rates – and now has more iodine, as well as folic acid, vitamins A, D and E and a prebiotic to provide food for the ‘rumen bugs’ to assist with feed

32 | THE FARMLANDER

• Improve length of heat • 90 percent submission within the first 6 weeks • Less re-absorption

conversion during this time of the season. Nutrimol 4n1 can be administered via a Dosatron Inline Dispenser or drench gun. For best results, begin dosing 30 days prior to the planned start of mating at 7ml/ cow/day and continue until 60 days after the end of mating. The key points to aim for with a Nutrimol 4n1 programme:

The cost of an empty cow in lost milk production plus the purchase price of a replacement animal is reducing farm productivity. The cost of a Nutrimol 4n1 programme is less than $9.00 + GST/cow. It makes sense to implement a programme 30 days before mating starts. Talk to your local Farmlands store about a Nutrimol 4n1 Mating Programme or pick up an ‘It’s Business Time’ brochure for more information. Article supplied by Bell-Booth.

Glyphosate resistance? Glyphosate was originally discovered by Swiss chemist Henri Martin in 1950 but it was not until 1970 that another scientist, John Franz, synthesised the molecule “glyphosate”. This was then patented by Monsanto as the active ingredient for the herbicide Roundup®. Prior to the introduction of Roundup to the market, Paraquat, Amitrole and cultivation were the main weed control options for horticulturalists. Roundup offered growers a broad-spectrum perennial herbicide, which had a much safer environmental and user toxicity than those being used at the time. However, the cost of the brand Roundup remained relatively expensive, so many growers continued to use a mix of herbicide options in their programmes.

factors that has contributed to its downfall – the development of resistance. Glyphosate is now the most widely used herbicide on the planet. In recent times, glyphosate has given effective control with a low cost per hectare and many growers have just used glyphosate and glyphosate mixes with application rate spikes designed to increase control. Often little alternative chemistry is being used during the season, or from year to year. If we are to keep this chemistry working for us in the future, we must now introduce a sustainable resistance management programme, just like those used for other pesticides. There are two main points that must be considered if we are going Rate per hectare: Under-dosing is a leading cause of resistance development. that kills many of the weeds present but some individual weeds survive and grow back. They are then re-treated with a sub-lethal dose of the same chemical. When deciding on the correct application rate per hectare, it

When Monsanto’s glyphosate patent expired in 2000 and many generic suppliers came to the market, the price plummeted, turning this highly effective but expensive product into the cheapest broad-spectrum option for horticultural use. Its cheapness is one of the main

Get better results from glyphosate We always knew that WETCIT greatly enhanced the performance of glyphosate – but we never knew why or by how much. This past year, the University of Illinois was given the job of answering both of these questions. Dr. Dean Riechers and Dr. Anatoli Lygin from the Department of Crop Sciences conducted a series of experiments to investigate the effect of WETCIT on the performance of Roundup® PowerMAX (a leading brand of glyphosate in the United States) for the control of fathen. For those that haven’t experienced WETCIT, it is a revolutionary wetting agent and penetrant that outclasses other adjuvants on the market.

| MSO = methylated seed oil

A key experiment conducted was to label the glyphosate molecule with a radioisotope C14 (i.e. make it radioactive) and measure the level of radioactivity in the plant at given time intervals. This allows the researchers to see where the glyphosate has moved to and in what concentrations. The results were

The key messages from this research are: 1. Despite Roundup PowerMAX having a surfactant already present in the formulation, the performance of this product can be greatly enhanced by adding WETCIT. 2. With conclusive evidence showing translocation out of the leaf into surrounding tissues begins 15 minutes after application, growers can have comfort knowing the addition of WETCIT will get the glyphosate molecule into the plant, particularly when inclement weather is forecast. 3. Oils did not enhance the performance of the Roundup PowerMAX in this study. NB: WETCIT was used at 300ml per 100L of water in this study.

The next stage in the research is to look at the speed the six herbicide treatments kill weeds in a field environment. Article supplied by WETCIT.

Few inputs can offer the same return in the current economic climate but for many farmers, ProGibb SG has become part and parcel of costeffective farming, no matter what the budget looks like. Farmlands Manawatu Field Manager Mike McLean says there’s a good reason for this. “It’s proven to work and there’s good trial data wrapped around it as well.” Mike estimates at least 50 percent of his clients now routinely use ProGibb to boost DM production in spring and autumn by 30-60 percent within 3

He started using ProGibb SG 3 or 4 years ago and now aims to apply it across both milking platforms several times a year, spraying up to 200ha a week at the busiest times and complementing it with solid urea.

Fodder beet takes off With land resource limited, many farmers are looking at ways to grow more dry matter within the same area. Due to this, fodder beet has seen a surge in popularity across the country and is being used widely across livestock classes, not just for wintering dairy cows. Like an increasing number of New Zealand farmers, Matt and Tory Simpson of Ranui Station at Albury have grown fodder beet for the first time. Although the inputs and need for early monitoring can be relatively intensive, they have been extremely impressed with how their fodder beet has performed, especially in a very testing dry season. Matt and Tory are in the heart of South Canterbury, 600m above sea level, running a 4,000ha sheep and beef breeding unit, with 2,900 ewes, 600 hoggets, 140 Hereford cows, 60 rising 2 year cattle and 130 calves. Fodder beet was an appealing option

to provide quality feed to grow their yearling bulls out toward 400kg. Choosing Jamon fodder beet, a recent release from Agricom, Matt and Tory sowed 5ha. As first time growers, Matt and Tory had the help and support of their Farmlands Fairlie Technical Field Officer, Luke Brice for all the crop monitoring and input requirements. Being prepared and having time to plan is a big advantage when growing fodder beet. It is important to check and correct any soil deficiencies, including pH and communicate with the drilling contractor and spray contractors. A delay of only a couple of days with herbicide applications can advance the weeds enough to make them difficult to control. Matt and Tory’s Jamon fodder beet was precision sown on 7th November, with the dryland Jamon crop averaging a yield of 18t/ha. “It held on and performed very well in a tough season,” says Matt. While beet will not totally replace the brassica they grow, it is a great rotation option and allows diversity within their system. Next year Matt and Tory are looking to increase their fodder beet to 10ha, to enable them to graze their bulls on the crop for longer. Agricom markets a number of established quality mono-germ fodder beet varieties, which fit a range of systems and uses. Jamon fodder beet is a new release from Agricom, sourced through French fodder beet breeders, Florimond Desprez. It is a

high yielding variety with a medium to high bulb dry matter percentage, making it suitable for a range of stock classes and is predominantly grazed in-situ. Rivage and Cerise are higher bulb dry matter types. Both produce uniform bulbs, providing a fit as either an in-paddock grazing beet, or as a lifting crop. This can provide excellent flexibility if the plan is to graze the paddock and if yield estimates are exceeded, the excess crop can be lifted late in the season and stored for later utilisation. Monro has a lower dry matter percentage but still with the same high mono-germ seed quality, likewise with the potential to produce high yielding grazing crops. FARMLANDS FUEL

Be prepared with diesel winterising This winter has seen some of severest winter temperatures in the South Island, with Central Otago recording -21°C! Diesel (ADO) viscosity (flow) is affected by weather temperature. As temperatures drop into -°C, it can start to gel. This is called waxing. Fuel terminals throughout New Zealand apply additive relevant to the climate zones where they are located. Zones with dates and minimum operating temperatures where additive may work include: • Canterbury and South Canterbury – available from mid-April and suitable for use down to -9°C. • Otago and Southland – available from mid-April and suitable for use down to -15°C. FARMLANDS REAL ESTATE

North and South Island REAL ESTATE UPDATE The future is very exciting for Farmlands Real Estate as we are actively recruiting North Island Salespeople. Shareholders may have noticed our campaign in many North Island newspapers. Our new Masterton team has been working from the store for a month and already has received several referrals from shareholders and staff. Local weekly advertising has seen multiple pages of new listings and the team has sold their first property – a residential home! Creating a national network of real estate offices is a direct result of requests from our shareholders and benefits both the South and North.

We are in the midst of preparing spring marketing campaigns and recent sales of sheep and beef properties, especially in Otago, have been very strong. Currently demand exceeds supply. We believe quality dairy property values will maintain close to last season’s values and we are working with a number of qualified dairy purchasers at present. Spring is not far away – if you are considering selling, please call to discuss your options with your local Farmlands Salesperson. I am always available if you require advice surrounding any real estate matter or would like to become a Salesperson with us – in the North or South!

An example already – a South Island shareholder purchased a farm in the Wairarapa region a few weeks ago and another South Island shareholder missed out – the team are now actively looking to satisfy this shareholder’s needs.

Keep an eye on what’s happening with your Minimise theft. Maximise efficiency. Fuel theft is one of the biggest headaches in industry today. Every single day, diesel is being unlawfully taken from your farm tanks and stolen. The good news is by installing a simple yet very effective fuel management unit, you can put paid to this – once and for all.

Know where every drop of fuel is going. By fitting one of our management units to your tank, you can track every single litre of fuel. The terminal prompts for information, i.e. PIN number, vehicle number etc. before the pump can start. Once complete, the transaction appears online on your computer, tablet or smartphone. Run user reports, track machine efficiency, set alerts – whatever. Unease is gone. Peace of mind is back.
