SHAREHOLDER OFFERS

FROM THE CHAIRMAN AND CEO We were pleased to meet with a good number of our shareholders who attended the 51st Annual General Meeting on 4th November in Invercargill. Many of the shareholders at the AGM shared a long history with the co-operative and a number were former Directors. Business included Director appointments, as three of our Directors retired by rotation this year – Don McFarlane in the South and Nikki Davies-Colley and Tony O’Boyle in the North. Don McFarlane was re-appointed unopposed in the South and both Nikki Davies-Colley and Tony O’Boyle were re-elected in the North. Other resolutions passed were the appointment of auditors, acceptance of accounts and remuneration of Directors. With the change of balance date, this was the first year that the Melbourne Cup shareholder sweepstake format was experienced in the South. David Whiteside, from Mahana Downs near Clinton was the well-deserved winner – David has been attending the AGM regularly most years, supporting the co-operative. David wins a $2,500 travel voucher. The year has ended on a very positive note, with the distribution of a record annual Bonus Rebate of $17.6 million – 75 percent of our operating surplus. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our shareholders for your support throughout 2014. Farmlands is committed to setting the benchmark on price and service in the rural market and we look forward to continuing to find new opportunities for the benefit of our shareholders in 2015. Kind regards

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Keeping children safe on farms Farms can be exciting places for rural children to live and for city children to visit. Children on farms get real life experience about looking after animals, milking cows, planting seeds and growing food. These activities teach children to be responsible at an early age. However, large animals, water races, silos, pits, ponds, agrichemicals and powerful machinery and equipment make farms dangerous places for children to play. As a result, hundreds of children are injured on farms every year and tragically some are killed.

Northern Hemisphere can keep their snow – we’ll have the sun. White Christmas? Try blue skies and golden sand. But the beach is not for everyone when the time comes to put down tools and let the stock fend for themselves for a day. There are some who prefer to stay close to home – and have gone to great lengths to replicate the great Kiwi getaway in their own backyard. Using the unique characteristics of the properties they farm, these shareholders have found family bonding by the back fence. At Makapua Station – on the winding road that connects Wairoa to the pristine Lake Waikaremoana – Colin and Marg Baynes have expanded their property portfolio. Forget about high rises and apartments. The Baynes family have built with ponga logs. Their ponga “lodge” (Marg says the term lodge is used in the loosest way possible) sleeps eight people and has a bath, long drop and views across their 3,700 acre property. Built to accommodate the burgeoning hunting operation on Makapua Station, at holiday time it substitutes as a family retreat, where technology can’t reach and quality time is premium. | Marg Baynes with the lodge brazier.

“What we love about it is no one has a cellphone, TV, computer or anything and we all just sit around and have good social interaction with each other. That’s the essence of it.” | Makapua Station, near Wairoa, Hawke’s Bay.

“The hunting operation gives people the chance to hunt deer running wild on the property. When we first got here, we didn’t let anybody shoot hinds for 10 years to get the numbers up,” Colin says. “We now have trophy and meat hunting, averaging about 50 hunters per annum.” Located on easy to steep hill country, Makapua offers the mainly New Zealand national clientele an introduction to hunting. In fact, Colin says they are only two or three people off 300 people having shot their first deer on the property. Despite the impressive numbers, Colin says they are happy being a business that focuses on New Zealand hunters. “We want to keep it pretty much as it is,” he says. “We’re sort of the bottom feeders in the trophy hunting business anyway – we don’t buy big stags and release them into there. These are wild.” Marg says a lot of the visitors tend to be young hunters, who return years later with their own children. “They like how Colin treats them and teaches them how to shoot,” she says. “We get a lot of repeat business and a lot of business through word of mouth. And of course, just because some people just want venison!” | Marg and Colin Baynes.

Despite its charms in a niche market, Colin has no plans to improve or expand on his original creation. “I don’t want to touch it – it just works beautifully as a social getaway as it is,” he says. “The kids will come home and one will say ‘let’s go out to the lodge’. Marg may then make a camp stew, we will have a feed and then a few beers. What we love about it is no one has a cellphone, TV, computer or anything and we all just sit around and have good social interaction with each other. That’s the essence of it.” Another group of shareholders that has found the benefits of a back-property bach is the Bartrum family. Lynton Downs is a sheep and beef property up the Inland Kaikoura Road, which Rachel and husband Kurt manage for an English family who have owned it since the 1950s. “We’ve got the farm itself, running 3,500 hectares flat to hill | It has minimal mod-cons but the lodge has the essentials.

country – and there’s a historic home as well,” Rachel says. “But we’ve also just started a farm stay up here.”

Which is where the ponga lodge comes into the equation. “It started about 6-8 years ago, when we took a few ponga logs up to a high point and made the lodge,” Colin says. “It has got a kitchen, hot water, a hot shower on a tree, a bath, long drop and a brazier that we all sit around and camp at from time to time.” Marg says the ponga lodge was built out of necessity more than anything, so Colin could “get up in the morning and hear where the animals were”. Situated on a kanukasurrounded high point with 180 degree views, Colin says he chose the location because “it’s 5 minutes’ walk to shoot your first deer”. “I have hung a bottle of rum up there for anyone who can shoot a deer from the hut. But if you miss, you have to put a bottle up. There’s eight bottles there already, I think only one has ever been shot from there!”

| The view from Lynton Downs, near Kaikoura.

After approaching the owners, Rachel and Kurt started the farm stay as a way to highlight the unique landscape and history of Lynton Downs. The old shepherd’s quarters was gutted and renovated and they are just about to open two shepherd’s huts on wheels, in conjunction with Canopy Camping. Since opening at the end of September, they have had visitors from here and overseas and reviews are positive. “I’m really passionate about the thought of being able to have people from not just New Zealand but overseas being able to come to a proper working sheep and beef farm,” Rachel says. “Today, a lot of family ties to farms are not there and people can’t experience that anymore – feeding animals, just waking up and enjoying it.” While the farm stay is in its fledgling stages, both Rachel and Kurt identified the importance of having a place to enjoy quality time with family and friends. With Lynton Downs providing the perfect backdrop for a bach for themselves, the

But we found a really nice, sheltered clearing down from there.” Two huts were brought in on skids. Rachel describes it as a great place for family and friends that will remain separate from the farm stay operation. “There is no electricity and no phones but there is a nice coal range hooked up to a hot water cylinder. We have a nice outdoor bath and a few other little luxuries,” she says. “The good part about it for us is it’s not too far for us to get to – it’s only about 20 minutes away, although it seems a lot further. For our special shareholder ticket offer to the 2015 Gulf Oil Howden Ganley F5000 Festival, turn to page 23

One of New Zealand motorsport’s greatest names, Howden Ganley will be honoured at the 2015 New Zealand Festival of Motor Racing. Held at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park during the weekends of January 16-18 and 23-25, the Gulf Oil Howden Ganley Formula 5000 Festival will pay tribute to the man who in the 1970s became New Zealand’s fourth Formula One driver, along with other legendary names McLaren, Amon and Hulme. From humble beginnings racing his mother’s Morris Minor in the late 1950s, Ganley forged an impressive resume of drives and results across the world. Among the impressive results were a second place in the 1970 European F5000 Championship, second in the 1972 Le Mans 24 Hour race, third in the 1969 F3 European Cup and a third placing in his only appearance in a Can-Am Race in the USA in 1971. Ganley will be reunited with F5000 cars at the festival, as this unique vehicle class is put into the spotlight. Among the classes and vehicles joining F5000 are Historic Muscle Cars, Allcomers and Historic Sports Sedans, Historic Saloons, Sports Cars and GTs, Historic Formula Fords, Classic Trials, Historic Formula Libre, Heritage Touring Cars, Formula Junior and F3, plus others to be announced. Time for a water system stocktake With potentially many long, dry summer months just around the corner, the demands on your water system can be extreme. To maintain your water system's reliability, it’s that time of the year when consideration needs to be given to maintenance. STOCK WATER SYSTEM MAINTENANCE

As we come into peak water demand over the drier summer months, is the ideal time to give your stock water reticulation system a quick “once over”. Things that lessen reticulation efficiency or water quality lead to stock drinking less and have an adverse effect on production. The following is a brief check list of potential problems to look out for.

leaking threaded fittings and ballcocks replaced. Pipeline network – indications of problems are: Reduced or no water flow - this is usually associated with low-pressure gravity schemes and can be caused by the system inlet sucking in air or the water velocity being too slow, creating airlocks.

Reservoir integrity – following cleaning is an excellent time to check concrete tanks and troughs for cracks, which could become potential leaks. Epoxy fillers, such as Humebond, are used to repair cracks. For best results these types of products should be applied to the internal surface, while the tank or trough is empty. Valve performance – this is also a great time to check the tank and trough valves or ballcocks for any operating issues. Preventing flystrike this summer The length of protection from flystrike following dipping is dependent on many factors. Follow these guidelines to help you get the best protection. Saturate the wool to skin level in at-risk areas (see Figure 1). Adequate saturation is crucial to get the optimum protection from dip products and this can be checked with an indelible pencil or paper.

Dip 3-5 weeks after shearing. Aim to dip with no longer than 8 weeks (fine breeds) to 12 weeks (coarse breeds) wool growth. The longer and finer the wool, the more difficult it is to wet to the skin and the more dipwash required. Two litres of dipwash per animal should be used when jetting. Use the right equipment, correctly. Automatic jetting races can achieve good results for fly control. As they do not saturate the entire body, use saturation (plunge or shower) dipping if combined lice control is required. If using a jetting race, use a lice pour-on off-shears to ensure lice are controlled.

Declaring war on facial eczema Facial eczema occurs in warm, moist conditions, when the fungus Pithomyces chartarum rapidly multiplies throughout the pasture. The fungal spores contain a toxin called sporidesmin. The production of sporidesmin causes considerable stress to young stock and dairy cows once ingested. Cows in particular become very sensitive to light, skin becomes inflamed and milk production drops dramatically. It’s time to act now!

Facial eczema - a preventable disease Facial eczema (FE) significantly impacts on the health and productivity of cattle (Towers and Smith 1978). Every year, December through to May brings the inevitable facial eczema risk that presents significant welfare concerns to most farm animals. Left unprotected, the disease causes unnecessary suffering amongst most ruminants. FE is caused by sporidesmin, a mycotoxin produced by the microscopic fungus Pithomyces chartarum, which grows in the base of dead or dying pasture litter. It is this toxin that when ingested severely

more than 300 enzymes throughout the body and has a key role in both the immune system and reproduction. Zinc deficiency is associated with a loss of appetite, reduced growth rates, poor hair and wool texture and retarded sexual development in both sexes. Zinc supplementation is not just about eliminating a deficiency. Zinc has been linked to improved immune function, skin integrity and improved hoof health and is commonly used at elevated levels to help protect against facial eczema. Facial eczema is caused by a common fungus, Pithomyces chartarum, which only produces spores containing a toxin called sporidesmin during special humid weather conditions typically following a dry spell. If consumed, the spores release sporidesmin into the digestive tract, from where they are absorbed into the bloodstream and become concentrated in the bile ducts, causing severe damage to the liver. Initial signs include diarrhoea and sudden milk production drop, followed 10-14 days later by restless behaviour as cows seek shade and reduced appetite. Skin damage occurs because photosensitive toxins build up under the skin, complications from which can

of inorganic zinc, to substantially reduce the incidence and severity of liver damage suffered in an outbreak of facial eczema, if delivered prior to or during outbreaks. When feeding zinc oxide in-feed or oral drenches, or zinc sulphate via water troughs, at far above normal therapeutic levels, a product registered with ACVM and proven to be effective against facial eczema should be selected. Zinc consumed at high levels inhibits the production of superoxide radicals by the sporidesmin, which damages the tissue. Unfortunately, although zinc is relatively non-toxic to ruminants, the amount of zinc required to prevent facial eczema is close to the level likely to cause toxic effects, which include anorexia and reduced milk production. Care must also be taken if feeding supplementary copper, as copper seems to activate the toxin in the liver. Zinc dosing should be discontinued

Balanced nutrients for young stock Ensuring young stock fulfil their potential is critical to the future success of your farm business. However, sometimes results fall short of expectations. For example, researchers at LIC analysed dairy heifer data and discovered that the majority of young stock were failing to meet industry liveweight targets. In fact, at 22 months they were on average 11 percent below target. This will affect their chances of getting in-calf and their milk production.

New insecticide helps integrated pest management Farmlands Technical Field Representatives were able to implement an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach in fodder brassica crops this past season, thanks to the introduction of new insecticide chemistry. DuPont™ Exirel® insecticide had its first year of commercial release last season for the control of key caterpillar pests such as diamondback moth, cabbage white butterfly and soybean looper, plus European leaf miner. It also offers suppression of grey cabbage aphids.

“It did a great job,” he says. “It controlled the key pests, right down into the plants’ crown area. It stopped the pest loading on the crop, which was fantastic.” He says the insecticide had the added advantage of leaving beneficial insects in the crop, to continue to work against the target pests.

Exirel® impressed with its performance and its ability to leave beneficial insects in the crop.

Scott McIlroy, from Farmlands Darfield, says Exirel® insecticide was used extensively in the local area last season.

“With the good bugs that are left cleaning up the pest bugs, you are not going in with another spray. It is highly beneficial to the clients.”

Stuart Evans of Farmlands Invercargill says the retention of beneficial insects in the crop has been an interesting development with the use of DuPont™ Exirel® insecticide. “A lot more guys are focusing on more sustainable farming and anything they can do for the environment, they are quite keen to do,” he says. “These guys aren’t touchy, feely, greenie people – but they still like to be doing something that is seen to be of benefit to the environment. Exirel® is an important tool we can use early with confidence and let Mother Nature help us achieve clean crops.” Article supplied by DuPont New Zealand Limited.

FORAGE AND ARABLE

A calculated approach to brassica nitrogen A good supply of nitrogen is essential for brassica crops to yield well but the amount you need to supply as fertiliser can vary widely. Getting it right is important for your business and for the environment. Too much nitrogen can promote the formation of antinutritional compounds and if these are ingested by stock, they can cause health issues. To reduce the chance of this happening, take the time to determine exactly what you need and when you need it. If in doubt, ask for advice from a fertiliser expert. Soil testing is the first step to understanding your nitrogen requirements. This will give you a measure of current soil nitrogen levels, which you can use alongside an estimation of yield to determine the amount of nitrogen you need to supply as fertiliser. The previous uses of your paddock will have a large impact on the soil nitrogen reservoir. Paddocks coming out of long-term pasture can release substantial amounts of nitrogen as the organic matter in the soil breaks down. Nitrogen reserves will be a lot lower in paddocks coming out of crops. Once you have your soil test results to hand, you can ask your Ballance Field

50 | THE FARMLANDER

Consultant to use the Ballance Brassica Calculator to help determine the rates and timing of your applications. It will allow you to try out different scenarios so you can see what will result in the optimal outcome for your crop, both in terms of yield and financial return. The timing of your applications will depend on the crop you are growing. Typically, some nitrogen will have been included in the starter fertiliser. Postemergence nitrogen is normally applied at canopy closure, around 4 to 6 weeks after sowing. For longer maturing crops, like swedes, you may follow this up with a second application around 8 to 12 weeks after sowing. Two applications (split applications) are also good practice when you are applying higher rates of nitrogen. If you are growing a crop that will be grazed multiple times, a post-grazing application will help your

crop to recover. In most cases, SustaiN will be the best product to use. This is particularly true when broadcasting fertiliser. Recent Ballance research has shown that if at least 5-10mm of rain is not guaranteed within 8 hours of an application then you risk losing significant amounts of nitrogen through ammonia volatilisation. Using SustaiN will reduce this loss by almost 50 percent, on average. Rather than being lost to the atmosphere, this nitrogen will stay in the soil, where it can be used by your crop. For more help in determining the rate and timing of nitrogen applications to best support your brassica crop, talk to your local Farmlands representative. Recycled e-waste gets new lease on life Earlier in 2014, Environment Centre Hawke’s Bay worked with Farmlands to divert 12 pallets full of assorted e-waste away from the landfill for responsible recycling. Like many businesses, Farmlands had built up a large amount of e-waste, as it replaced older office hardware over time. Environment Centre staff worked with Farmlands to sort, process and palletise this waste to be sent to recycling partners.

New look Farmlands Card coming soon

This month

CHECK OUT THE GREAT SAVINGS FROM THESE FARMLANDS CARD PARTNERS

As the reach and diversity of Farmlands Card continues to grow, it is important that our 58,000 shareholders have one Card across the country. At present, Farmlands has two Cards – the Farmlands Card and the CRT Card. Both offer the same great deals with the same Card Partners, no matter where you are in the country. To make it easier for our shareholders – and easier for the Card Partners who accept the Card – a new Card will be introduced for all shareholders next year. The new look Farmlands Card will look similar to the current Farmlands Card – but will actually use the CRT Card’s operating system. It will also include the new look Choices logo, reminding shareholders of the great Choices Rewards on offer when they use their Card. South Island shareholders will start receiving a replacement Farmlands Card at the start of next year, while North Island shareholders will receive new Cards closer to the middle of the year. It will be business as usual with your new-look Card – with the same Card Partners nationwide offering the same discounts and rebates you are accustomed to. In the same way you may have noticed new Card Partner signage appearing throughout the country, the new Card is just one more way Farmlands is looking to the future – one Card offering many great deals.

NO.1 PERFORMER ON EVERY PADDOCK

SZM0102

Once you’ve played and worked with the best, there’s no settling for less. That’s why Tony Woodcock kits up on a Suzuki. And just like New Zealand’s most capped prop, the DR200 Trojan has measured up to the test for years. With a tough 200cc engine, greater suspension travel, higher ground clearance, and a lower seat height than any of its competitors, it’s rugged, reliable and easy around the paddock. The 13-litre fuel tank means it won’t be stopping half way through the game. When you add top level details like alloy hand guards, rubber insulated steel footpegs, dual side stands and a large 12V headlight it’s clear no other farm bike can compete.
