FROM THE CEO Welcome to the first edition of The Farmlander for 2015. Last year ended on a very positive note with a record turnover, record Bonus Rebate and the completion of a major phase in our System Consolidation Programme. The change in business processes has given rise to some challenges but our teams have performed well and shareholder feedback has been positive. The appointment of Sir Graham Henry in the role of Farmlands Head Coach saw Sir Graham and the Executive Leadership Team travelling throughout the regions in November and December, hosting a series of team building and leadership workshops. Dovetailed into these sessions, our regional teams worked alongside their chosen local charity or worthy cause by supporting the “Talk with Ted” events. These gave Farmlands shareholders the chance to hear from the Rugby World Cup winning coach, while supporting regional charities. This year will bring additional benefits for shareholders through further enhancements to the new Farmlands website, creating a consistent experience for all. Shareholders nationwide will also enjoy access to the Choices Rewards programme, including the opportunity to convert Choices Points to Air New Zealand Airpoints DollarsTM. This year will also see the roll-out of new Farmlands branded Cards nationwide and later in the year, we will be upgrading the Point of Sale system and putting new equipment at all of our North Island stores. This will provide all shareholders and staff in our stores with an improved experience when making purchases in-store, enable better management of all of our retail business and provide improved inventory management and reporting. INGREDIENTS 2 cups self-raising flour 2 tsp baking soda 2 cups raw sugar Pinch of salt 1 tsp cinnamon 1 cup extra virgin olive oil

4 eggs 4 cups grated carrot 1 cup of macadamia nuts (optional)

METHOD Sift and mix dry ingredients. Add oil, stir well. Stir in beaten eggs then carrot. Butter/grease a medium round cake tin (I also line with baking paper). Bake at 180C for 1 hour or until knife runs clean. Let cool and ice with cream cheese icing.

Be prepared for a spill or an emergency There is always a risk of an accident when you use or handle chemicals. The potential harmful effects of a chemical spill can be greatly reduced by having the correct equipment on hand and using it effectively. Make sure that anyone on your property that uses chemicals knows what to do in an emergency. A simple procedure sheet on the wall of the store can help. This should include all the relevant emergency phone numbers. Emergency equipment and spill kits For a small chemical store, you should have: • Broom • Shovel • Small dustpan and fine brush for powder spills • Protective clothing, including gloves, respirator, boots and eye protection • Absorbent material such as dry sand or soil, or a commercial absorbent material • Containers to hold the contaminated absorbent material or a leaking container

What to do when a spill occurs Minor liquid spills • Make sure you are safe – put on protective clothing, including gloves, goggles, respirator, gumboots and overalls as needed before dealing with the spill • Stop the flow of the spill by righting the container, replacing the lid or shutting off the valve • Don’t move a leaking container – you may risk making the spill larger or contaminating other areas • Do not wash away remaining chemicals, as this will cause pollution of soil and water • Contain the spill • Make a mound around the spill with dry absorbent material • Cover the spill with more absorbent material • Wait for a short time until all the liquid has been absorbed • With a broom, sweep from the outside to the centre - use more absorbent material if liquid is still present • Shovel all the absorbent material into a container for disposal Major liquid spills • Try to contain the spillage as best as you can without placing yourself in danger • Cover or form mounds of absorbent material around any open drains, streams, ponds or manholes that are close to the spill • Call the Emergency Services on 111 • Try to keep upwind of the spill, in case there are any noxious fumes • Keep people away from the spill

Event continues to be fine vintage Southland will be cranking later this month for Edendale Vintage Machinery Club’s annual Crank-Up Weekend. Held on the weekend of 31st January and 1st February, the event celebrates the machinery of yesterday. The 2015 edition has a theme of “Celebrating steam in Southland”, as well as commercial vehicles pre-1995. Crank-Up secretary, Julie-Anne Clark says this year’s edition will have plenty of new exhibits to keep new and regular visitors entertained. “We are hoping to have a Showman traction engine from England, currently in New Zealand, down from Christchurch for the event,” Julie-Anne says.

New location, same Field Days The South Island Agricultural Field Days has moved – but while the location may be different, the spectacle and special deals will still be at a premium. The South Island’s premier agricultural Field Days event will now be located at 1191 Courtenay Road at Kirwee, just a 25 minute drive west from Christchurch Airport. In Northland, the schedule for two teenagers is much the same – with the added workload of running their own businesses. Amber and Cara Doggett have been showing for the past 10 years. Now 17 (Amber) and 15 (Cara), they have started their own studs – Amber’s Ambee Limo (Limousin) and Cara’s Ceejay Shorthorns. Amber and Cara’s inspiration comes from their family owning New Zealand’s only Brahman stud, Karoo Brahmans. Originally showing Brahmans, the pair decided to stamp their mark on their own choice of breeds. “I got offered a purebred Limousin heifer to raise. We always showed cattle that we had reared in the youth sections at the A&P Shows – but having a purebred gave me the opportunity to show in the beef ring, alongside my mum and the Brahmans,” Amber explains. For Cara, it was a case of loving Shorthorns from an early age – especially the roans.

“In 2012 I got my first roan Shorthorn, Meadow. She was the one

“They still recognise you and go up to the car window,” Lucinda says. “And they are more difficult to move. You can always tell the pets when you are moving cows, because they will be the ones that won’t move and will just stare at you.” So what makes a champion calf? For Mikayla and Sophie, it is all in the rituals. Show morning starts the same each time – getting up a lot earlier than normal. Depending on the location of the Show, the calves may have their faces and legs washed before they leave the property. “We usually allow heaps of time to get to the venue, so the calves don’t get travel sick,” Lucinda says. “The girls add egg to their milk for a shiny coat, before a polish up, get dressed and head over just before the class starts.” Mikayla and Sophie both say their calves have been well behaved

encourage young people to participate in the showing of cattle,” Amber says. “The competition is fierce … but I enjoy it and quite often the judge will make us swap animals in the ring and make us parade somebody else’s. We have learned over the years what some judges look for. For example, one judge likes long sleeves and not rolled up. So we always make sure we have the right shirt with long sleeves. Others look at boots, so we make sure they sparkle.” Cara says she enjoys the Young Handler competition, as it offers a chance to show off her stockmanship and breed knowledge. “Sometimes mine can be difficult to lead – quite often the judge gives you more points if you’re handling a difficult animal really well.” Both girls speak passionately about their Show experiences – heading to the overnight Shows in their mum’s Chevrolet, reuniting with like-minded friends and sleeping in swags, underneath the stars and beside their cattle. But it is also apparent that the support of others has helped foster their love of showing. For Amber, starting her own stud has been actively encouraged by the New Zealand Limousin Society. “I fell in love with the Limousin breed and I have been fortunate enough to have a huge amount of encouragement from other Limousin breeders, as I am the youngest member,” she says. “I am now in my second show season with Limousins and due to the generosity of fellow Limousin breeders, I have been given a heifer and managed to purchase four breeding cows at a very good price. I am also currently leasing a cow, while showing its bull

calf this season.” For Cara, that support came a bit closer to home. “I have been fortunate enough to get support and encouragement from my best friend’s parents,” Cara explains. “I lost my best friend Scotty to cancer when we were 9. We showed together at all the calf clubs – he was a great competitor and loved his calves, like I do mine. Without Gail and Bruce, I wouldn’t have got my first Shorthorn or a beautiful Glenrossie bull to go over my heifers. “They come to as many Shows as possible and I love to make them proud and I am really grateful for what they have done to help me.” Like Mikayla and Sophie’s exploits in Canterbury, Amber and Cara started off in calf clubs and pet days. Their progression through the years is testament to the persistence required in what can be a demanding discipline. But as the awards and accolades show, the Doggett sisters have a pretty good idea of what it takes – and what it will take – to reach their goals. For Amber, that starts with building up her Limousin stud. “My goal is to have an animal in every class at a Show and to win a Supreme Champion with a cow and calf,” she says. “I am also looking forward to having a senior bull in the ring. I am hoping that it

HILL COUNTRY FARMING - A FAMILY AFFAIR

Just like playing for the All Blacks – when opportunities arise, they must be taken. This is certainly the philosophy of the Directors of Morrison Farming, based near Marton in the Lower North Island. The Morrison family have been farming around the Marton area for six generations and have just celebrated 150 years of sheep and beef farming. Morrison Farming is still a family business and is nowadays run by a Board of four Directors. When the 940 hectare Mangara Station, near Hunterville came on the market, the Directors recognised an opportunity to grow the business, by integrating this farm into their low land farming operations. They set the wheels in motion to purchase the property. July 2013 became the purchase date but long before this, background information was gathered about the farm’s infrastructure and development feasibility budgets were created and assessed. Mangara Station is a medium to steep property, typical of the surrounding area. The farm's topography ranges from 110 to 300 metres above sea level and has an average rainfall of 1,000 to 1,200mm. To achieve the best production returns, it became apparent that some large scale infrastructural projects would need to take place. The Directors formulated a strategic plan, incorporating four major development projects: 1. Increase the base fertility of the farm 2. Increase paddocks from 22 to 70 3. Establish robust all-weather farm tracks 4. Install an efficient stock water system

When ranking these projects in order of importance, the stock water project emerged as the most pressing. “We could have spent a lot of money on fertiliser and fencing very quickly," William Morrison, one of the Directors, says. "But if a good stock water system was not in place, what’s the point?” The next question arising was - what type of water system would best suit this property? The options were to build dams in each paddock or install a reticulated system. Efficiency and capital investment costs were the important factors in assessing each system. Whilst the budgeting of the dam option was as simple as getting a price from the local contractor, the process for planning and costing a reticulated system seemed a lot more complex. William identified the three critical elements of the reticulation option as being:

1. Water source 2. Energy to power the system 3. Mechanics – pump, pipeline and fittings William’s issue now was to find the expertise to assist with feasibility and costing these key elements. Morrison Farming has a policy of supporting local business whenever possible, so William approached a local pump company and Farmlands Marton for assistance. Farmlands involved Peter Carswell, the Rural Projects Manager for Iplex Pipelines, to provide assistance with assessing water requirements and system design. Peter’s first step was to carry out a comprehensive GPS survey of the property and provide the Morrison Farming Board with a number of options for consideration.

“This was a very challenging project, due to the extremes of altitude and the fact that an on-site power source would be required,” Peter says. The system’s hydraulic design determined that two pumps would be required. The first is a submersible pump installed in a 4 metre deep flooded chamber, fed from an infiltration gallery located in the farm's stream. This pumps water up to holding tanks on the river terrace, from where a second surface mounted pump lifts water to a number of 30,000 litre tanks, located at high points around the property. Troughs are then gravity fed from these tanks.

Peter says. “It’s only the availability of this high pressure Blackline pipe and ductile iron compression fittings system that made this project feasible and cost effective.”

Both pumps are powered by a diesel generator, which starts automatically, controlled by a solar-powered timer and shuts off via a pressure switch. “While all this sounds technically impressive, it’s important to remember that pumping water 200 metres uphill has only recently been achievable through a coiled polyethylene pipe,” Peter says. “Prior to this, galvanised pipe in 6.5 metre lengths with threaded joints would have been required, blowing out the material and construction costs and making a reticulated scheme uneconomic.”

Making the most of better returns With the sheep and beef sector going through a positive period, it’s a good time to take a look at your fertiliser programme to make sure your farm can perform at its optimum and make the most of the good returns on offer. Comprehensive soil testing will help you to see where your investment in fertiliser is best spent. Soil testing is recommended at least every 2-3 years, so that you can see trends in nutrient levels. Carry it out at the same time each year so that your results are comparable. You should divide your property into blocks for testing, e.g. your more productive flat land, steeper land and cropping areas, so you can treat each area differently. On ash and sedimentary soils you are aiming for an Olsen P of 20-30, sulphate sulphur of 10-12, Quick Test magnesium of

8-10 and a pH of 5.8-6.0. Quick Test potassium should be 7-10 on ash and 6-8 on sedimentary soils. Target levels may vary depending on your production goals. If your fertility levels have dropped in the past few years, you may have noticed lower fertility grasses and woody weeds creeping into your pasture. To put a halt to this trend, focus on addressing deficiencies of phosphorus and sulphur – nutrients that help to support higher fertility grasses and clover. Both of these elements are found in the Superten and Sulphurgain range of products. Long-term research at sites like Ballantrae has shown that withholding fertiliser, or applying low levels over prolonged periods of time, leads to decreased production. Interestingly,

there is also some evidence that higher applications of superphosphate (375kg/ha/year versus 125kg/ha/year) may have a positive effect on winter growth rates in particular, with some analyses showing proportionately higher winter growth rates on the higher fertility blocks. If you are thinking of lifting production by applying capital fertiliser make sure you are able to utilise the extra feed grown - this may mean further subdivision is required, more stock need to be on hand or your grazing management needs to change. It is also worthwhile considering autumn nitrogen applications, as these will give you extra pasture to get you through tight winter and early spring conditions. Having breeding stock in better condition come spring will also mean they are able to rear higher quality offspring. SustaiN and PhaSedN are both good product possibilities to consider but your Farmlands or Ballance representative will be able to advise you on the best products to use in your situation. Finally, don’t forget to get in early when booking your fertiliser applications. This year looks to be even busier than usual and leaving it late may result in your applications being delayed as contractors become busy. I trust the new year has started well, the ryegrass harvest has started, cereal crops are ripening and winter feed crops are continuing to grow. The Grain and Seed unit finished 2014 with a great day at the Foundation for Arable Research Chertsey site's Open Day. Our site was very busy with the mouth-watering, grain fed beef from 5 Star Beef on the BBQ a highlight. There was again a large turnout of farmers and industry personnel at this bi-annual crop expo. Grain trading through the last quarter of 2014 was steady. Prices stayed reasonably firm with a significant amount of free crop purchased, albeit with volumes being well back on 2013 due to the drop in the dairy price.

Deliveries of our forward contracted grain was virtually complete by Christmas and most silos were empty going into the new harvest. It was a significant milestone to pay a Bonus Rebate in November on our grain sales and purchases and on our small seed purchases from shareholders. We look forward to this possibly continuing, on the back of the ongoing success with our Grain and Seed Trading and of the retailing out of our vertically integrated feed and seed, procurement, manufacturing/mixing and distribution models. Spring 2014 Retail Seed sales were well ahead of last year, with a standout product being fodder beet seed, with the volume sold up 150 percent year on year. Forage cereal and brassica seed sales also increased in volume.

Performing well on a range of soil types as a summer crop, many farmers are seeing the true benefits of this multi-graze crop to boost milk production. Chicory is an easy and effective way to fill the feed crunch over the dry summer and autumn periods. As well as being a good lead into pasture renewal by breaking weed and insect lifecycles, it has also been classed as “ facial eczema free” by DairyNZ. With the combination of high dry matter production and feed value, it’s no wonder Reon Williams is absolutely delighted by the production and

Heroes and history at Hampton Downs One of New Zealand motorsport’s greatest names, Howden Ganley will be honoured at the 2015 New Zealand Festival of Motor Racing. Held at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park during the weekends of January 16-18 and 23-25, the Gulf Oil Howden Ganley Formula 5000 Festival will pay tribute to the man who in the 1970s became New Zealand’s fourth Formula One driver, along with other legendary names McLaren, Amon and Hulme. From humble beginnings racing his mother’s Morris Minor in the late 1950s, Ganley forged an impressive resume of drives and results across the world. Among the impressive results were a second place in the 1970 European F5000 Championship, second in the 1972 Le Mans 24 Hour race, third in the 1969 F3 European Cup and a third placing in his only appearance in a Can-Am Race in the USA in 1971. Ganley will be reunited with F5000 cars at the festival, as this unique vehicle class is put into the spotlight. Among the classes and vehicles joining F5000 are Historic Muscle Cars, Allcomers and Historic Sports Sedans, Historic Saloons, Sports Cars and GTs, Historic Formula Fords, Classic Trials, Historic Formula Libre, Heritage Touring Cars, Formula Junior and F3, plus others to be announced.
