Before oil was discovered in the 1950s the UAE's economy was dependent on fishing and a declining pearl industry. But since 1962, when Abu Dhabi became the first of the emirates to begin exporting oil, the country's society and economy have been transformed.
Fishing in the Gulf is an industry worth Dh1 billion a year, with the UAE consuming between 70 and 100 tons of seafood annually at a rate of 33 kilograms per capita - the highest among Gulf states. If you will be fishing from the shore you will need a fishing license. The official season is from October to May but November to February is thought to be the best time to fish in Abu Dhabi.
