A day with “The Chairman” Freestyle Flatland Legend Martin Aparijo
I got to drive up with “The Chairman” Martin Aparijo to the Woodward West Old School Reunion located in Tehachapi California. On the way there we got to catch up, talking about life, memories and of course BMX. Out of nowhere Martin said he was just going to enjoy his time at Woodward and just hang out and talk to everyone. He was just going to do a little day riding. He was going to sit out on the freestyle session for the first time. I was sad by his decision because I love watching him ride. When we arrived at Woodward Saturday afternoon we drove to the Monster Ramp. Martin got out of the truck and went into his humble rock star mode. He started getting hugs and handshakes from all the BMXers. While enjoying all the riders shredding on the giant ramp, I could not help but notice how “The Chairman” interacted with everybody. I thought to myself that he is truly a great ambassador to the world of BMX.
We left the Monster Ramp and headed down to the main facility. The Chairman grabbed his bike and got busy what he is good at, flat land freestyle. Old school music was bumping and he was throwing it down like he has since he was a teenager. That made my day. Then “The King” Eddie Fiola jumped in the mix and started throwing down some tricks along with some other riders. The energy from the crowd was epic. It just shows how these legends still got it. Well the evening had come and dinner was consumed. Our table consisted of Eddie Fiola, his wife Mindy, Martin and some HB Tuesday crew. At the table next to us was Dennis McCoy, Matt Hoffman and the list goes on. Eddie asked me where Martin was? I told him that I did not know. A few minutes later they are calling Martin’s name to speak on the mic to say a few things to honor his friend and BMX partner Eddie Fiola. Eddie was surprised and touched by the kind words Martin had shared to the crowd that evening. The last event of the day was the freestyle session. Freestyle legend Dave Nourie was persistent to get Martin to ride in it. Martin stuck to his guns and did not participate. Martin did a bang-up job of announcing the event. Now a days you can find Martin jamming every Tuesday at the H.B. Tuesday jam sessions. Every Tuesday flat land legends meet at the Main Street pier in Huntington Beach California. They normally kick off around 3 PM. It is open to everybody.
