Antarctica

INCREDIBLE SNOWSCAPES The Antarctic Peninsula is at its most pristine from NOVEMBER to MID-DECEMBER. As the Antarctic wakes up from winter, pure white snowscapes seem to stretch beyond the horizons.

AT A GLANCE

While Antarctica’s “summer” CHILE extends all the way from November to April, the month you visit determines what you’ll see and do once you arrive. It’s like three seasons within a season, each time period yielding different weather, wildlife sightings (and behaviors) and conditions on land. Knowing what you want to experience while you’re there will help you work out the best time to visit, so you have a customized adventure that ticks all the right boxes.

ARGENTINA FALKLAND ISLANDS: AN ORNITHOLOGIST’S DREAM Penguins aren’t the only winged species to see in the Falkland Islands. There are 63 breeding bird species and 23 annual migrants, including the inquisitive striated caracara, which are known to steal shiny objects.

Dr SUMMER ROMANCE Penguins begin their courtship rituals (bowing and preening) from NOVEMBER to MID-DECEMBER on the Antarctic Peninsula. Male gentoo penguins sometimes woo their favorite female by giving her a well-chosen rock!

CROSSING THE ANTARCTIC CIRCLE Journeying south of the equator to 66°33'45.9—the Antarctic Circle, also called the Polar Circle—is a milestone few travelers ever reach.

NOV 1915–APR 1916 Shackleton and crew drift on ice, then row to Elephant Island by lifeboat where some crew members are left behind.

WHALE-WATCHING WEATHER Enjoy fantastic whale-watching as humpbacks arrive back in Antarctica MID-DECEMBER to MID-FEBRUARY when temperatures reach up to 40°F/ 5°C, and there are up to 22 hours of sunlight per day.

PENGUIN CHICKS! Wildlife-viewing is excellent in the Antarctic from MID-DECEMBER to MID-FEBRUARY.

Especially eye-catching are the penguin chicks which hatch at this time in the sprawling rookeries. 8

KING PENGUINS Salisbury Plains, South Georgia, is home to one of the largest king penguin colonies in the world: about 500,000 of the species gather here.

FALKLAND ISLANDS (Islas Malvinas)

CROSSING THE DRAKE PASSAGE Crossing the infamous 1,300 km (800 mile) wide Drake Passage, between Argentina and Antarctica is a rite of passage for many polar travelers. Rough seas and high winds give it the name “Drake Shake.” When it’s calm, it’s called “Drake Lake.”

BIRDS OF SOUTH GEORGIA Albatross and pintado petrels guide your ship on the approach to South Georgia, which is known as the Galapagos of the Poles.

APR–MAY 1916 Shackleton and five crewmen row back to South Georgia to find help for the sailors on Elephant Island.

BLUE-TINTED ICEBERGS Antarctic vistas sparkle during the mid-summer period of MID-DECEMBER to MID-FEBRUARY. Sun and salt water turn the icebergs into works of art in various shades of blue. CALVING GLACIERS! Expect Antarctic glaciercalving, the breaking of ice chunks from the edge of a glacier, in the late-summer period from MID-FEBRUARY to LATE MARCH.

OVERNIGHT CAMP-OUT IN THE ANTARCTIC Go to sleep in a bivvy sac on the peninsula, wake up to the bray of a penguin, the ethereal call of the sea or the exhalation of a humpback whale. A night spent outdoors is an unforgettable experience. Temperatures are at their warmest (up to 40°F/ 5°C) MID-NOVEMBER to MID-JANUARY.

NOV 21, 1915 Endurance sinks to the bottom of the Weddell Sea after being trapped in ice for over a year.

SOUTH GEORGIA DEC 5, 1914 Endurance departs Grytviken whaling station on South Gerogia.

HONORING SHACKLETON Eminent polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, who died in 1922, is buried in the cemetery at the historic whaling station at Grytviken on South Georgia Island. Follow his historic journey.

What our QUARK EXPEDITIONS

guests have said:

“No question was off the table for me when I talked to my Polar Travel Advisor. We talked about clothes to bring, food, what to expect on a shore excursion, how to handle connecting flights to get to the ship. I was confident by the time I left for my trip to the Antarctic.” – F.B., past polar traveler “I felt my Polar Travel Advisor was my friend by the time I actually landed in the Antarctic. I was able to talk on the phone, email questions and then call back to double-check. The depth of knowledge impressed me.” – J.J., past polar traveler “We couldn’t decide between kayaking and the paddling program for our Adventure Options. Our PTA talked us through the differences. That meant we were confident by the time we dipped our paddles into the water during our afternoon kayak in Antarctica!” – K.M., D.M., past polar travelers

He truly wears his passion for the environment on his sleeve.

A trip around the world at age 12 shaped Ali’s perspective of the importance of family and the privilege of traveling. Born in Australia, she has experience in travel leadership, management, communications and logistics. A Mandarin speaker, avid skier, scuba diver, cyclist and runner, she is always happy to share her passion for conservation.

Alice (Erqing is her Mandarin name) is passionate about wildlife, travel and creating transformational experiences for people. Christian has spent most of his life working on the ocean as a biologist, skipper, environmental consultant and adventure guide. He’s worked with Quark Expeditions since 2004 as a guide and lecturer of marine biology.

She hopes to inspire others to discover more about the planet as well as themselves, through unique experiences in the Polar Regions. Alice grew up in Beijing, China and has lived in the UK and US. Alice has traveled on over 50 Expeditions in the Polar Regions and is looking forward to many more.

Laurie has spent part of her career in marine logistics and operations management. She’s also worked for a tall ship sail-training organization in her home base of Toronto. Laurie has guided 70 trips to the Polar Regions and feels most at home on a Zodiac, searching for wildlife, or on a hike over the tundra.

Christian Geissler

Solan Jensen

Abbey Weisbrot

David (Woody) Wood

Christian has spent most of his life working on the ocean as a biologist, skipper, environmental consultant and adventure guide. He’s worked with Quark Expeditions since 2004 as a guide and lecturer of marine biology. He has completed over 130 trips to the Antarctic, the Falkland Islands, the Canadian Arctic, the North Pole, South Georgia, Svalbard, Greenland and Iceland.

Born and raised in coastal Alaska, Solan has worked as a wilderness ranger, expedition leader, kayak guide, boat builder and marine mammal emergency responder. His passion for wild places took root during university, where he received a degree in philosophy. Solan has 108 Antarctic voyages under his belt, in addition to expeditions to the Arctic, including Greenland, Canada, Alaska, Norway and Russia.

Abbey hails from Canada, where she developed a love of the outdoors. She pursued her passion by completing an adventure guide diploma and a Bachelor of Tourism Management, both at Thompson Rivers University. She has been an adventure guide in various ocean environments since 2009. When not in Antarctica, she follows her passion for kayaking in beautiful places.

This Australian has a strong passion for the landscapes, ice, wildlife and history of the polar regions, and delights in sharing it with Quark Expeditions guests. Woody’s love of the ocean and the wild places at the extremes of the planet have resulted in his living at sea, either in the north or the south, for the past 17 years.

We have the most experienced team in the polar regions: Shane Evoy has 19 years of experience, and David (Woody) Wood has 17 years handson experience in the polar regions. Christian Geissler has been on over 100 expeditions, while Solan Jensen has led 24 Arctic expeditions and 108 Antarctic expeditions.

WHY QUARK EXPEDITIONS

WHY QUARK EXPEDITIONS

Why Choose

Quark Expeditions has been exploring the polar regions for 30 years, making our expedition team the most experienced in the industry. We’re the only expedition company with its own proprietary training center, Quark Academy, which ensures maximum safety, efficiency and peace of mind during your polar adventure. Additionally, we offer onboard presentations facilitated by some of the world’s most informed polar experts. Recent additions to our fleet, such as World Explorer and the soon-to-launch Ultramarine, mean we have the most diverse fleet in the region, offering you the widest range of choice for your polar expeditions.

Quark Expeditions? We deliver the most innovative Itineraries.

We have the most experienced staff in the industry.

We use the right ships for the job.

Our educational programming is world-class.

Quark Expeditions constantly pushes the boundaries of discovery, offering seven unique itineraries this year.

Our knowledgeable, dedicated and passionate expedition team delivers unforgettable Antarctic memories. After all, we’ve been exploring the polar regions since 1991. Trained at our very own Quark Academy, our teams operate under the guidance of the most qualified Antarctic Expedition Leaders in the industry.

Our Antarctica-operating polar ships carry fewer than 200 passengers and are small enough to access hard-toreach areas. Our ship sizes allow for customized and more personalized experiences.

We ensure our guests the opportunity to participate in enriching daily lectures and presentations. International experts— including biologists, penguinologists, ornithologists, glaciologists and historians— reinforce passengers’ connections to the environment at every opportunity.

Our off-ship adventures are extraordinary. We offer a robust lineup of active options that generate once-in-alifetime moments. In fact, we offer the most adventure options of any expedition company operating in Antarctica. Heliskiing, hiking and Zodiac cruising allow for exhilarating, unscripted exploits, while sea kayaking and paddle excursions let passengers see Antarctica from a whole new perspective—encompassing air, land and sea.
