REWILD DISCOVER 21 NEW EXPEDITIONS & NEW WILD REGIONS

2021-2023 VOYAGES | EXPEDITIONS.COM

INTRODUCING

21 NEW EXPEDITIONS Our intrepid expedition developers might have been working from home during the pandemic, but their travel imaginations and ambitions roamed widely, creating 21 new expeditions—21 spectacular new portals into beauty, wildness, and the seldom-seen. Each promises epic new adventures—whether it’s transiting the Northwest Passage, or crossing the Pacific from Taipei to Tahiti. New experiences—visiting Vietnam’s coastal villages, or seeing rare penguin species in the Subantarctic Islands. And fresh returns— returning to Raja Ampat for its vibrant undersea, or to Franz Josef Land for its untrammelled wildness. Some are premiering here, others were previously announced. And all, given the renewed optimism provided by advances in therapeutics and testing, or the most important development, a vaccine, offer inspiration to those planning to explore like never before. 1.800.EXPEDITION (1.800.397.3348) 6

DEAR TRAVELER, It’s February 20th and I’m writing this from Hawaii. I’ve returned ‘home’ after months in French Polynesia working, exploring, and trying to fathom how the future will develop on so many fronts. It’s delightful here, in many ways, because Hawaii, although part of the U.S., remains Polynesia. It is, after all, the eastern tip of the vast Polynesian triangle, a region of the world I will never tire of exploring; there is so much beauty and wonder, both natural and cultural. And exploring is what I am writing to you about today. We are about to carefully, thoughtfully, and responsibly resume our mission to explore and understand the world through expedition travel. We do not take this intention lightly. A dedicated team has been joined at the hip for nearly a year working on the details of a multi-faceted plan to re-engage, as I mentioned, carefully, thoughtfully, and responsibly—with optimism buoyed by the most important development of the past year—a vaccine—as well as advances in therapeutics and testing. We are heading back into the wild, with perhaps an added level of purpose. These past months have been tough on the environment and people in so many places: rangers who protect against poachers in parts of Africa no longer employed; illegal fishers moving more freely as patrol boats are shut down. In Galápagos, a region we have deep roots in and a profound commitment to, the dearth of tourism has been devastating—for the people, the economy, and the mechanisms for protecting the wild. We responded to this need by developing a relief initiative to engage all friends of Galápagos in providing micro loans—to further education, increase local food security, and create new businesses. This infusion of money raised helps in the short term and the long: the programme will live well beyond the pandemic, with the monies loaned, returned, and recirculated. If you are interested in learning more, or donating, please visit islandconservation.org/galapagos-island-relief-fund. Resources for the protection of the wild will inevitably be strapped as economies have been hard hit. We want to actively find creative ways to pick up some of the slack, to be a lifeline of sorts to places that desperately need support. We as a company, tourism as an industry, and travellers can do so much to fulfil the notion of ‘rewilding’—a concept of protecting an environment and working to bring it back to its natural state. We can, and I believe must, come to the aid of our wild heritage, and the people who depend on its health, wherever it exists, by celebrating it, revering it, and finding our own paths to support its essential existence. We need to get back out there and show all the hard-hit places some real love. Rangers and park wardens need to get back to work, NGOs need to resume their efforts, and so many people whose livelihoods are connected to travel need to get back to work. And you, I believe, deserve to confidently get back to exploring. After all, it’s something you’ve done with passion and purpose, and long to do again. All the best,

Sven-Olof Lindblad

PURE WILDNESS The expeditions featured in this section have the same focus, the same mission—to defy the odds of wind, wave, weather, and wariness to find and observe wildlife. To revel in the complicated, yet ultimately simple, act of paying attention. To not simply see the wild creatures with whom we are privileged to share the planet, or to photograph them, or even to remember always that we did see them, but to know their world, learn something of their lives, and thus demonstrate our reverence for their sovereign otherness.

MAKING IT EXCEPTIONAL FOR YOU “Looking, searching, finding. There is a persistent belief that wildlife is everywhere, it’s easy to find, and that if we just go to the right location, the wildlife is waiting there for us. Nothing could be further from the truth. Finding wildlife is a combination of being in the right place, at the right time, with the right people who are actively searching and know what to look for. I work with some of the best wildlife spotters in the world, people tuned by years of disciplined and diligent observation who always have their eyes open and never let down their guard. The payoffs are extraordinary wildlife encounters, and the joy of sharing these experiences with people who have never been part of the process of looking, searching, and finding.” — E XPEDITION LEADER, RAB CUMMINGS Instagram @rabcummings, #workwelove

Making your expedition exceptionally rewarding is our goal, and our team is key. Our naturalists have the knowledge and passion that will kindle yours. They will do whatever it takes, including keeping a constant lookout so you don’t miss the thrill inherent in every kind of sighting—from the surprise of a blue whale off Patagonia, or an approaching polar bear in the Arctic, to the trail-side birth of a sea lion pup in Galápagos.

They’ll help you see, do, and process all the extraordinary experiences. Our hotel team will know what you like and how you like it from Day One. The captain and officers will welcome you to the Bridge anytime—to scan for wildlife or simply enjoy the calm business of ship navigation. And exclusively on our expeditions, an undersea specialist and a video chronicler fill out the team to provide a unique perspective, and a lasting record of your eventful days.

WILD BEAUTY Beautiful people make even those of us who proudly consider ourselves unmoved by another's appearance dumb with admiration and fear and delight, and struck by the profound, enervating awareness of how inadequate we are, how nothing, not intelligence or education or money, can usurp or overpower or deny beauty. —HANYA YANAGIHARA, The People In The Trees

INTRODUCING WAVELENGTHS EXCLUSIVE MUSIC PLAYLISTS

Salvador, Brazil.

30

Jacob Edgar.

In 2012 our founder, Sven Lindblad, a fan of Putumayo World Music, engaged ethnomusicologist, Jacob Edgar, to curate a music programme for a 35-day trip up the coast of West Africa. Founder of the record label Cumbancha, host of the TV programme Music Voyager, and chief curator of Putumayo, Jacob has a wealth of music knowledge and a passionate conviction about music’s power to enhance the travel experience. “Obviously, there’s the entertainment factor, but it’s more about meeting the people from the country; hearing the music they listen to. You’re hearing music that’s in the local language or that comes from local traditions and history and you can use it as a starting point for all kinds of understanding.” Guests on that expedition enjoyed extraordinary experiences— from front-row seats at a Freshlyground concert in Cape Town with 5,000 local fans in attendance, to an intimate performance in a Dakar nightclub by Senegal’s legendary Orchestra Baobab. Since then, Jacob has been aboard nearly 50 Lindblad-National Geographic expeditions worldwide, arranging hundreds of musical performances by worldclass local artists and presenting them in unique settings. Last spring when the pandemic halted our travels, Jacob curated a weekly series of Lindblad Virtual Expedition performances presented live on Facebook, by superb musicians from across the globe—lighting up our social media channels with comments from grateful listeners worldwide. This October Jacob will be on our Wild South America: The Guianas To Brazil expedition, bringing aboard a vibrant slate of musicians and offering insights into what local music reveals about the history and culture of the region.

Find all Wavelengths playlists on our Spotify and Apple Music channels.

Now, our Wavelengths Expedition Music is available to you anytime, in carefullycurated Spotify and Apple Music playlists. Just remember what Jacob says of the world’s music, “It’s like eating French bread in France: it just tastes better when you are there.” So be sure to join us on an expedition and experience for yourself the magic of music in its natural setting. WILD ISLES Some lie on the horizon lumped and brown like basking tortoises. Others appear like sudden mountains thrusting up from the sea. And still others seem to weave the clouds down from the sky, shifting them like veils to create mirages—is the island snowcapped? on fire?—or to simply vanish. But whether they manifest as apparitions or invitations, islands are the ultimate reason to travel by ship. There is simply nothing like standing on deck, or on the Bridge, as an island materialises out of the blank vastness of the sea. The islomanes among us live for these moments, the sheer number of islands in the world a goad for their passion. For the rest of us, somewhere on the continuum between ‘have had’ the experience and ‘never have,’ the itineraries in this section hold unparalleled promise.

EXPEDITION PHOTOGRAPHY You’re off the coast of the Kuril Islands, and a low-flying Steller’s sea eagle is passing the ship, talons clutching a silver fish... fearless men are performing the dramatic firewalking ceremony on Fiji’s Beqa Island... a pod of gleaming killer whales are surfacing under the bow rail in the mirror-calm waters of the Lemaire Channel... Because of our partnership with National Geographic, at moments like these you have a Lindblad-National Geographic certified photo instructor at your side and at your service. Our instructors have been specially trained to assist you with your camera model and settings, plus the basic elements of framing, composition, and light; and using your smartphone camera effectively. Best of all, because each is also an expert naturalist, they can provide tips on wildlife behaviour to help you anticipate and capture amazing moments. And depending on which ship of the LindbladNational Geographic fleet you’re on, you could find yourself shooting side-by-side with a top National Geographic photographer. They explore with us because of the remarkable wild regions we visit, and because they’re excited to share the expedition experience and their skills with photo enthusiasts of all levels. With you on deck and in field situations, they provide inspiration and advice, gleaned over the course of significant careers. They also offer informative onboard presentations, and supportive critiques. Together our Lindblad-National Geographic certified photo instructors and acclaimed National Geographic photographers ensure that you return home with fantastic photos. Learn about the unique & exclusive aspects of our programme at expeditions.com/photo.

WILDNESS & HUMAN HISTORY In the arc of one voyage, see elegiac traces of the last of the woolly mammoths and the emblematic remains of the Soviet Union’s collapse. Traverse the Panama Canal and feel an inner cheer at how the manmade lives in harmony with the lush tropical diversity it borders. Imagine yourself as Hiram Bingham seeing the ruins of Machu Picchu entwined by jungle as you survey its glory from up high. Witness the ancient traditions of indigenous people deeply connected to their place in Haida Gwaii. Or encounter the Inuit navigating the extreme changes of climate in the High Arctic. The expeditions in this section explore the essence of geography: how the land influences the culture within it.

ALWAYS SOMEONE INTERESTING TO MEET Our connection to the world’s wild places through conservation and personal relationships in far-flung locations has deep roots. For many guests that’s a compelling reason to choose to explore the planet with us. But there’s more: things are often extra interesting aboard our ships. For example, in Galápagos, we’ve recently signed an agreement with the National Park, formalising Lindblad-National Geographic ships as platforms of opportunity for science in Galápagos, facilitating research and advancing the training of young local scientists. We’ve been doing this sort of thing worldwide for decades—helping researchers, like James Balog of the Extreme Ice Survey study glacier retreat, and scientists, like John Durban and Holly Fearnbach, conduct research on the health of whales in Antarctica. And through citizen science observations, our naturalists, undersea specialists, and often guests, contribute to science’s knowledge of whales, mantas, and the polar underseas. We’ve always given National Geographic Explorers, National Geographic grantees, and other fascinating individuals ‘rides’ to field sites. And through the Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship, a professional development opportunity for pre-K–12 educators made possible by the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic Society partnership, we bring teachers out into the world and inspire them to bring the world back to their classrooms—with far-reaching effects (see page 77 for an example). Then, there are our Global Perspective Guest Speakers and others, who come aboard to share their knowledge and insights, as well as the adventure, with our guests. This is a real boon for you—the prospect of not only exploring charismatic geographies, but also of meeting genuinely interesting people aboard our ships.

WILD ADVENTURES “Away” is not just a place—it's taking the time, and the sea route, to let the magic of discovery happen. It’s the patience of watching the horizon for spouting whales, or seeing the outline of a remote island materialise, the joy of letting the birds change your plans, and the belief that nature always delivers the best show. For nature, silence, and solitude are the last real luxuries left in the world—and all three are becoming harder to access. This is what “epic” means and what the expeditions featured here do—they reach beyond the man-made world, the touted destinations, to arrive in the untouched places. To meet animals that seem surprised to see you. To take the time, and nautical miles, to separate yourself, and discover terra incognita.

FAMILY TRAVEL “Expeditions are more immersive than just observing a place as a tourist without context. They endeavour to understand the soul of a place with a holistic approach that includes a deep information dive into the past, present, and future through a team of experts in their field. We just finished an epic expedition to Antarctica with the company that pioneered this kind of travel: Lindblad Expeditions. They specialise in taking guests on experiential journeys to far corners of the world; although their trips follow a predefined course, their informationcentric approach explores a destination from a variety of expert perspectives. Taking kids on an expedition is the ultimate educational adventure for families. It takes the idea that travel is the best education we can give our children to a whole new extraordinary level.” — AMIE O’SHAUGHNESSY

Ciao Bambino, Family Travel Advisors We believe shared activities in a wild and unfamiliar environment can bring a family together. And we’ve found that kids thrive in the safe, comfortable space of the ship where they can exercise a measure of autonomy. Our naturalists (and National Geographic certified field educators on relevant trips) are excellent role models who deftly embed ‘smart fun’ into every activity. Our expeditions ensure seamless transitions whether you’re simply coming to the ship and returning home after, or adding a side trip or extension. And whether you’re traveling with a nuclear or multi-gen family, or planning to go with your family’s ‘bubble,’ we offer savings on a wide variety of family-friendly trips. See expeditions.com/offers for more, or see the

specific itinerary that interests you.

National Geographic Global Explorers Programme Our exclusive programme for kids and teens is the only one of its kind, offered on our Alaska, Baja, and Galápagos expeditions. Developed in conjunction with National Geographic Education, it’s designed to help kids under 18 develop the attitudes, skills, and knowledge of an explorer. Kids of all ages engage in a variety of cool optional activities, relevant to their specific ages, guided by a National Geographic certified field educator. Visit expeditions.com/family

for programme details.

Kids track their findings and record observations in their very own Field Notebook.

WILD ESCAPES The expeditions in this section offer the same exhilarating experiences as our classic expeditions. They’re simply shorter and, as a result, more convenient for travellers without the luxury of time to commit to an extended sojourn. In just five days, you can explore pristine, species-rich, and seldom-visited Channel Islands National Park, effortlessly traversing the ocean that separates it from California. Go beyond the Blue Lagoon to discover the wild west coast of Iceland. Actively explore the incredible Galápagos islands in seven days, or add three days and experience the wonders of Machu Picchu too. Here, time is on your side.

“ Culinary explorations have traction: they now factor into the travel agendas of curious gourmands from Bali to Baja California...[and] the enterprising operators of adventure cruise line Lindblad-National Geographic Expeditions have committed to local sourcing across every level of service and experience on their South American cruises. While guests enjoy delicious preparations of Andean superfoods—from maca and amaranth to chucho and cocoa nibs—small farms across the continent, from Costa Rica to the Falklands, are working with them to provision on spec; a Galápagos-based farm produces exclusive specialty provisions for the ships. It’s one more thoughtful way the Lindblad team really walks the sustainability talk.” —MARIA SHOLLENBARGER, Financial Times

PIONEERING FARM-TO-TABLE IN GALÁPAGOS Ana Esteves, Lindblad-National Geographic’s Director of Hotel Operations, has cultivated a farm-to-table culture in Galápagos. We have purchased some 30 tons of fresh produce, invested money in the farms, and contributed to their well-being and production. And reducing the need to import produce from the mainland by sourcing locally means reducing our carbon footprint as well. Here’s what Clemente, a farmer who supplies us with carrots, cabbage, pineapples, lettuce, leeks, white onions, butternut squash and blossoms, has to say about the programme: “What I love the most about farming in the Galápagos is being able to give back to this Island I grew up in. I could spend days on end in the field under the sunshine or rain, but as long as I am out there with my plantation I am happy and fulfilled. Before Lindblad-National Geographic, there was no sign of any tourist wanting my products, it was all for the locals. Lindblad has opened up so many possibilities for me and my family and our future. Anita (refers to Ana Esteves) has shown us that what we have been doing has a name, sustainable farming.” To learn more & see the farmers, use your smartphone

TURNING TRASH INTO TREASURE The Lindblad Expditions-National Geographic Artisan Fund supports the local creative community. The Fund not only provides artisans with instruction, materials, and support, it links upcycling to economic possibilities, as one successful artisan describes: “I started making paper to pearls in 2011, when Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic brought Sarah, an instructor from Uganda, Africa, to Galápagos to teach members of the community how to turn paper into pearls. The paper I use to make paper to pearls basically comes from discarded magazines and catalogues (including old Lindblad-National Geographic Expeditions brochures from the ships). I take this material and choose the most vibrant and alive colours. Over time, I learned to turn this unwanted material into beautiful pieces. [Lindblad] started buying my jewellery, to sell in their ships in various parts of the world.” —DAYSI PATIÑO, Santa Cruz Island, Galápagos To learn more about this programme, visit expeditions.com/artisan-fund

EMPOWERING TEACHERS THROUGH TRAVEL We have long believed that teachers are heroes, and deserve to know there are people out there who respect their work, their dedication to their students and to education, and are willing to recognise and support their growth and development. The Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship is the professional development opportunity we co-created with National Geographic Education, to give current Pre-K–12 classroom teachers and informal educators the opportunity to feed their curiosity about the world, learn, and bring geographic awareness back—by traveling aboard our fleet. Since the start of the programme in 2007, some 265 Fellows from 48 states and 6 Canadian provinces, plus Washington D.C. and a Department of Defense Education Activity school abroad, have utilised their fellowship experience to inspire tens of thousands of students and educators to care about, and protect, the planet.

Jennifer Chavez-Miller, a veteran educator, National Geographic Teacher Advisory Council member, Fulbright Scholar, and recipient of the 2020 National Geographic Gilbert M. Grosvenor Educator of the Year award, speaks for many in describing her experience: “Being a Grosvenor Teacher Fellow means being connected to other educators across the planet and to my students—past, present, and future. It means being connected to the world in just such new and visceral ways. It also means that I’m an empowered teacher. I’m empowered to create opportunities and experiences for my students to be explorers. I have the opportunity to dream big, and now I have a support network to make those dreams a reality.” —JENNIFER CHAVEZ-MILLER, 2018 Grosvenor Teacher Fellow, Albuquerque, NM Learn about the programme, eligibility, and more at expeditions.com/GTF

OUR SHIPS Our expedition ships are framing devices, metaphoric yellow rectangles, through which you look at the world. Our ships galvanise your gaze, directing it outward, enabling you to pay the same rapt and informed attention to wildlife and wild places that our species gives to the culture we value—art, music, and performance. As a result, after an expedition your senses are heightened. You see your surroundings in keener detail, and benefit from dopamine and other rich brain rewards that come from sustained attention, not just ‘clicks’ or ‘likes.’ It’s what makes ship-based travel so vital to the Lindblad-National Geographic mission to explore and understand the world. And now that our fleet has grown—with more blue-water ships, come more blue-sky possibilities.

Self-Disinfecting Ships Lindblad Expeditions became the first self-disinfecting fleet with the rollout of the ACT CleanCoat™ system in 2019. This photocatalytic cleaning process activates when illuminated, continuously breaking down unwanted microbes such as bacteria, viruses, mould, and airborne allergens. The positive environmental impacts of this non-toxic, chemical-free system are many: less plastic in the supply chain and waste stream, and more than one million gallons of water saved annually. The system lowers our carbon footprint and creates a cleaner, healthier shipboard environment for guests and crew alike.

And life onboard is remarkable. Being in the wild doesn’t mean renouncing comfort, cossetting amenities, or superb food. Our hotel team will know what you like and how you like it from Day One. Regardless of how often you’re in your cabin, it will be immaculate when you return. And, understanding the age-old adage that “an expedition travels on its stomach,” our chefs and their galley teams make dining daily full of interest, discovery and in many cases, the rich flavours of the region you’re exploring. Wherever possible, and our team has expanded the notion of possible (see page 76), it will be local and/or sustainably produced or caught. We invite you to dream big in 2021-23.
