“It must have been around one in the morning”, recalls Werner Lauthagen. “We were just off the coast of Casablanca and due to set sail again the following day.”

An amiable sanitary industry executive in his mid-fifties, Werner had been gifted the cruise as a birthday present from his children and grandchildren. “We had put it off several times – in my line of work, there is always so much happening.” The original plan had been to go on a tour through the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, but his wife “felt that would have been a little too cold”. Instead, they opted for a voyage of discovery to warmer climes with nicko cruises. All of a sudden – I cannot remember when exactly – I woke up and could not get back to sleep. So I got up again and went up on deck. I saw the lights of Casablanca, the silhouette of the city. And I heard someone on the port strike up an oriental melody on a flute. All the hustle and bustle was suddenly worlds away. I will never forget that moment.”
