THE GREAT AMERICAN 4TH OF JULY CAR SHOW

Photos and story by Joe Secka

The travel restrictions that have been posted around the country since Covid-19 became an issue have created anxiousness for most everyone. Gearheads are certainly no different. Attending car shows and cruises and associating with people with similar interests has always provided a certain enjoyment to me and I imagine numerous others. The 2nd Annual Great American Fourth of July Car Show at Columbia Park in Columbia Station, Ohio provided at least a little bit of respite from the lock-down. Once again the doors seem to be opening for us to see our reflections in the chrome and shiny paint, catch up with some folks we haven’t seen for several months and to savor the sound of rumbling exhaust. The hot and sunny day made it about perfect to check out some great machines. Paved roads weaved through the park grounds and numerous large shade trees provided some cover from the sun. The car count was around four hundred the last time I checked and there were still more cars arriving! There was a terrific mix of everything and Columbia Park was an excellent venue to move back toward what was once normal life. Music escaped from the pagoda and helped create a peaceful atmosphere for the attendees. I feel compelled to note the name of the event was likely the longest I ever remember seeing only to be outdone by the spacious grounds of the venue. I extend kudos to the organizers for their planning efforts. Food and beverages, pavilions and playgrounds for the kiddos were available. The event was sponsored by the Ohio Region Classic Car Club of America and proceeds went to benefit the Columbia Food Bank. Unfortunately, I doubt things will return totally back to “our normal” before 2021. So, perhaps it’s time to begin making plans for the not too distant future. This show is well worth considering for your plans. That’s all I have - Joe

ROCKABILLY RUCKUS

THERE’S A RUCKUS AT THE FAIRGROUNDS!

Photos and story by Joe Secka

The Rockabilly Ruckus was becoming a tradition at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds in Cortland OH. Unfortunately the 2020 edition was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. With the constantly changing schedule, I held back on submitting coverage of some events just to maintain a steady flow of material for Cruisin’ Times Magazine.

Anyway, I was at the Rockabilly Ruckus 2019 event and it was certainly everything I expected. Here is a peek back into that show. We were just entering the “Dog Days of Summer” over the August 13-15 weekend but the heat did not restrict the crowd!

There also was no shortage of hot rods, customs, trucks, bikes and more on the fairground property. Attendees could setup under the shade of huge oak trees or at any of the open roadside spots. Camping was also available for those who wanted to have that advantage.

Over in the Commercial Building, pinstripers were creating amazing art that was later auctioned off to benefit the It’s About the Warrior Foundation Charity. Once the auction began, Cassandra Seth wielded the gavel as the bidding was active for this great cause. At the other end of the building, the Pinup Palace was busy helping the ladies prepare for the pinup competition. Across the aisle, a barbershop was available for straight razor shaves or haircuts. Several vendors and swap meet sellers had a great mix of items to check out.

One of the most popular activities was taking your hot rod around the fairground’s 5/8 mile dirt track. Open track sessions were provided all three days and the dust was flying as drivers repeatedly returned in an attempt to improve their dirt trackin’ skills. The Pavilion was the location for several bands throughout the event. Rock ‘n’ roll music brought out several dancers to the delight of those who were watching. The stage was the perfect place for the Ms. Rockabilly Ruckus for 2019, Junior Pinup and Junior Greaser competitions. Marcie Snyder, from Mousie Mae’s Vintage Boutique, led a nostalgia themed fashion show. Back at the track, “Mayor” Dan Harvey tried to keep control of the Moonshine Run where competitors had to pick up a load of “shine” and head down the highway while being chased by the feds. The ultimate goal was to deliver their goods without getting caught or making any mistakes! And, all of this while under the pressure of a stopwatch! The fans up in the grandstands enjoyed this one maybe even more than the entrants. Well, why not have a burnout contest while everyone is here? Well, to the cheers of the crowd, they certainly did! The American Motor Drome Wall of Death Motorcycle Thrill Show returned to the Ruckus again in 2019 and played to a standing room audience several times each day. Overall, it was a pretty neat event. One happy gentleman told me, “The Rockabilly Ruckus is, for sure, the most funnest time you might can might have on any summer weekend! And don’t forget the sausage sammich, french fries and funnel cakes!”

Ed and Nikky Stanton and their volunteers have poured their hearts and souls into building the Rockabilly Ruckus into a bigger and better event. Obviously, I’m sure there are considerable funds attached to the effort as well. I certainly hope we all have a smoother 2021 where we can better enjoy the dreams of the promoters. That’s all I have - Joe

The 2020 car show scene will be one that goes down in the record books. For this was a year due to all the concerns about the Covid-19 virus has seemed to seen more shows canceled than be run. With that being said it was great when the great people at the Mason Jar Restaurant in Mahwah, New Jersey joined forces with the cool cats from the Dead Man’s Curve Car Club to put on a great show to try and kick start the whole car show scene in the New Jersey/New York area.

With folks being able to dine outside once again what better way to get folks out to the Mason Jar to have some great food and drink and check out cool cars at the same time. The Mason Jar is located in Mahwah, New Jersey just a stone throw away from the Sheraton Mahwah Hotel. For here at the Sheraton the fine folks from Dead Man’s Curve Car Club get together each and every Labor Day for their annual Dead Mans Curve Wild Hot Rod Weekend. So it made perfect sense that the show at the Mason Jar was a perfect way to have fun with their fellow car clubs and just car lovers in general.

Very quickly the entire lot of the Mason Jar was filled to the brim with all sorts of cool cars in all shapes and styles. Folks could check out crazy customs, great muscle cars, hot rods, rat rods, all on display. Wild paint, straight axles, gassers,

crazy creations folks got to check out up close and personal. So many cool cars came out that the next door hotel parking lot was filled up as well with even more great rides.

Danny Colicchio of Danny “C” Entertainment provided the music for the show which kept everyone entertained and enjoying the show. In addition folks were able to listen to cool songs, check out great cars and have some tasty food and drink as well.

The Mason Jar and Dead Mans Curve put their heads together and out of their hard work got the ball rolling for the car show scene in 2020 in and around the New York and New Jersey area. All at the same time of getting everyone to dust off their rides and get to spend some time with everyone else and just have fun and try to forget about these crazy times and look forward to better days. Days when car shows will be back on the calendar almost each and every day for all to have a good time with all their fellow car lovers.
