A WINNING HAND FOUR OF A KIND PERFECT ZINGERS
Photos and words by John McCartney
Back in the late sixties early seventies the MPC model group produced a series of model car kits which every kid could not wait to build. One of these was a series called Zingers, which the magazine ads said best The Hairiest Scariest fistfuls of muscle yet. The folks at MPC got the idea after the 1970 Detroit Autorama where a young man by the name of Denny Johnson built a model out of spare parts that he entered in the shows model contest. Johnson took home first prize and the folks at MPC saw that they had a winning model and started producing them for the general public to purchase and build for themselves. These crazy creations first were introduced in 1971 and flew at of the stores as every kid needed to build one of these Zingers for their very own. Well, Bob Larivee Sr., looking for ways to bring in even more fans to his already very successful car shows which he was producing all across the country. Larivee already had a number of other full size car models on display so he turned to Chuck Miller and his company Styline Customs in River Rouge, Michigan. Miller who already had created a full size version of the famous Red Baron and following the success of this beauty he was contracted to build a series of the Zingers to tour around the country. Miller built a number of models from Corvettes, Volkswagens, Semi-Truck, along with a Vette all special unique creations. A Dune Buggy called the “Super Dune” along with a front motored dragster called “Super Drag” was built by Steve Tansy. Tansy who raced a great deal in the sport of drag racing if best know for his Vega Panel Funny Car called “The Godfather”.
Over the past year the very talented John Sbrigato, Mario Colasuonno and Mark Glaz who all belong to the Dead Man’s Curve Car Club out of New Jersey have spent this time recreated a series of Zingers. These recreations have been done to perfection along with the help and guidance of Chuck Miller who was pointed out earlier built the originals back in the day. At the start of 2019 Colasuonno came back from a car show and said to himself you know what I am going to build myself a Zinger. After a trip to Chuck Miller’s house the project got off the ground and rolling along. He decided he would build what was original called the Super Bus a Volkswagen Bus. As he was starting to get the build going he was talking to fellow DMC member Sbrigato about his Zinger project. Sbrigato said if you are building the “Super Bus” I will build the “Super Volks” which was based on the Volkswagen Beetle design. So it began so both Colasuonno and Sbrigato reached out to Chuck Miller who is still living in Detroit and told him what they had in the works. Miller was so happy with the projects that all involved were planning to do that he was more than happy to give everything they were doing is blessing and help. With the help of Miller Sbrigato was able to get a “Super Volks” body which Miller had around. Colasuonno got the body that he needed for his project from out on the west coast from California. Once the bodies where in house Sbrigato painted the both of them at his shop Brighton Collision in Brooklyn, New York. The chassis and frames needed for all the projects were built by both Colasuonno and Glaz. Under the supervision of Colasuonno Glaz did all the welding on all the Zingers projects things started to come together. Once the paint was dry world famous Mr J who did some many famous race cars In the sport of drag racing over the years did all the artwork by hand. Sbrigato and Colasuonno each built their own full size motors for the their own creations.
Each motor came complete with big blowers and tons of chrome done by Super Chrome in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Glaz and Colasuonno get credit for all the work on the front and rear axles along with all work on both the front and rear ends as well. As was the case back in the day all Cragar parts and Goodyear tires are featured on the finished projects. With power for these two crazy creations come in different forms with a 392 Hemi engine giving the get up and go to the “Super Bus”. While a small block Ford engine can be found giving the power to the “Super Volks”. Well, flash forward to 2020 and both Sbrigato and Colasuonno said to themselves let’s build two more Zingers. First up was the “Super Dune” which was the Dune Buggy, this was followed by the “Super Drag” the dragster. First up was the Super Dune which got the whole ball rolling. The Super Dune came to life as Sbrigato was able to pick up a Dune Buggy body after seeing it for sale in a ad. Once the body was in house the work started to come together. Once again the chassis and frame were put together by Colasuonno and Glaz which found it ways under the body. Also the axles and rear end got put together by Glaz and Colasuonno as well. The motor was put together by Sbrigato who did all the machine work as well. The motor which gets the Super Dune up and running is no other than a big block Ford engine. John Klinger of AA Auto Trim produced a pair of hand made seats for the “Super Dune”. Albert Cirino of Star Eng. did all the work on the fuel injection on the “Super Dune”. The “Super Dune” also features two Schwinn Bicycle headlights on the front of the Super Dune. Once again the paint was applied by Sbirgato at Brighton Collision and all the artwork was done by hand by the very talented Mr. J. After the “Super Dune” was complete “the Super Drag” came to life as Colasuonno and Glaz were looking at two rails they said to themselves this looks like a dragster lets get started on the “Super Drag” the Zinger front motored dragster which Sbrigato was looking to complete. Glaz and Colasuonno also did all the work on the roll bar and the mounting of the top spoiler as well. Well, seven days later out the door came the chassis and the “Super Drag” was on the way. Sbrigato took control of the chassis at his house where he had formed the dragster body out of 18 gauge sheet metal working right out of his house. Once the body was complete Sbrigato once again went to work at Brighton Collision in Brooklyn, New York applying a crazy paint job that featured a number coats of PPG money green paint which had a little extra flake added into the finished project for that little extra pop. Mr J once again stepped up to the plate and did all the needed artwork once again by hand. Klinger of AA Auto Trim returned to do a special seat for inside the cockpit of the dragster. Sbrigato did a great deal of machine work on the blower to produce the oval look which on the dragster featured two blowers always keeping that all important Cragar look along the way. The “Super Drag” featured a pair of bicycle tires and wheels on the front of the car and four big Goodyear tires yes four tires on the back of the car. A real live Diest parachute is mounted on the back of the car in case after making a fast pass some little extra stopping power is needed. The Super Drag gets power from a big block Ford Engine same as in the Super Dune.
So in just over a year four classic Zingers have been put together and back on the car show world. All of this Zinger building by Sbrigato, Colasuonno and Glaz have in a way recreated the world of Zingers in the mind of Chuck Miller who has found himself back building Zingers once again. With all

of this interest plans are for a very special 50th Anniversary of the Zingers coming up in 2021. Many more Zingers are in the planning stages as everyone looks to bring these creations back in the light of day. Since many of the original Zingers are tucked away in places were the general public never gets to see them anymore. The response to the cars which Sbrigato, Colasuonno and Glaz has been off the wall with everyone flashing back to their younger days and when they built these models for their very own. All involved which includes Sbrigato, Colasuonno, Glaz and Miller look to complete another bunch of Zingers in the form of the “Super Vette” for Sbrigato, a pair of “Super Vans” one for Miller and Colasuonno. The “Super Van” appears to be one of the more popular Zingers that have ever been built and when the “Super Van”is done it will once again mark like all the Zingers the first time it has seen light of day.
In fact Colasuonno, Sbrigato and Glaz are hard at work building more Zingers for 2021 once again with the help of Chuck Miller. It is through their painstaking hard work each and every detail has been recreated to the tee. From the big oversize motors to mini bodies to the tons of chrome and spot on paint and pin stripping it is all there for everyone to check out and enjoy just like everyone did at all the big car shows that were put on by Bob Larivee Sr. back in the day. ~John

Woody’s ‘76 Corvette Northfield, OH.
This is my Uncle Woody’s 1976 Corvette. He’s owned it since the early 80s and around 2009 it was parked where it sat until 2018. We pulled it out of the garage, restored the engine bay and installed a Blueprint 383 stroker motor in front of the original T-10 4 speed. The interior was freshened up with new seat covers, carpet and we added a 68-72 removable rear window. We then fully rebuilt the brake system and suspension. We had a blast working on the car over the course of two summers together and have even more fun attending car shows.

A Quick Tip to Enhance Your Tire Dressing Game
Do you have a problem with tire dressing overspray getting on the body of your vehicle and keeping it off your rims?
About 20 years ago I learned the greatest trick for applying tire dressing, without getting overspray on your vehicle and I would like to share that with you today.
In the detail shop, most people use spray on tire dressings and there is nothing worse than getting ready to take a car back to the dealership and seeing dressing all over the sides or having to rush to get it off before a customer comes back.
By following a few easy steps, I can explain to you how to never have this happen and it all starts with washing the vehicle.
For this you will need 3 towels or cloths. I prefer 1 cotton and 2 microfiber cloths. The cotton will be for the dirty work and the microfiber for final inspection.
After you wash your vehicle you are going to start dressing your tires while the vehicle is still wet, rather than the last step, while it is dry. Doing it this way will not only keep dressing overspray and sling off your paint but it will also make your tires look that much better, regardless of whether you use a high shine or matte finish dressing. What you’ll do (While the vehicle is wet) is use the cotton towel to dry just the tire. You don’t have to spend a lot of time, just get the bulk water off and do the best you can in a few passes. At this point, spray your dressing on the tire as you would normally to dress it. Now, take the other 2 microfiber cloths and wipe down the wheel/ rim. This will remove any dirt that didn’t rinse away and will leave the rim looking clean and shiny without any greasy feel. Plus, now you don’t have to be so careful trying to not get dressing on them either!
If you are working outside or in general, water starts to evaporate off the vehicle, make sure to keep it wet with the hose. Once you have done this all the way around, you can then grab the towels/ chamois you use when drying off the vehicle and do that step next.
Applying tire dressing this way allows you to not be so careful when applying your tire dressing because when you do the final dry on the body, any overspray on the surface will come right off. ~ Happy Detailing! David
