Psychedelic Single ‘Taxicab’ from Midwestern Rap Group Bums

BUMS Bums is a young versatile group bursting on the scene with their newest single, “Taxicab”. This song is a medley of styles and sounds, coming together to form an interesting ode to psychedelics, which could easily fit on a soundtrack of a modernized Cheech and Chong movie. The song’s killer hook; which is performed by group member Xdam, is almost guaranteed to stick in your head all week long. Taxicab opens with a mellowed out verse from group member Kellan Grae. He references Martin Scorsese’s 1976 masterpiece “Taxi Driver” with his lyrics; “Taxicab start a riot with no Di Nero (De Niro), but life ain’t been fair yo. In the city, no one got pity, come fuck with me, come fuck with me,” which repeats in front of the chorus. The lead guitar, written by Xdam and friend of the group Anthony Gross, creates a unique, but familiar sounding atmosphere to the instrumental, reminiscent of a rock and roll song from the 70s. Taxicab also features group members Jayden Frye, Kevin Calderone, and Vaw Golde, all getting a piece of the spotlight. The standout verse is delivered by Golde, rapping about his lows in life and reflecting on things that turned his heart cold, as he raps “I’m not the man I used to be, this ain’t the world I used to see, I’m getting mediocre, can’t smile, baby where’s the Joker?” This verse is the longest of vocal tracks on the song, and it successfully merges with the beat and makes the vibe feel cloudy and ominous, bringing on a feeling like someone having an anxiety laced acid trip. The song is set to release on May 21st, a week prior to the music video that was filmed in Chicago, Illinois. The cheery tones of the track plays perfectly into the clear skies and bright colors showcased in the visual. Taxicab succeeds Holy Smokes to become the second single on the debut Bums album “Avery”. The complete album releases on June 4th of this year.

Refusing to be defeated, Mista Strange distilled the chaos, and unleashed the unapologetic track ‘Open The Gates’ on his 19th birthday. Allowing nothing to stand in his way, an ever-resilient Mista Strange threw himself head first into music, and this was when he was able to pen the two life changing tracks that graced the Blackbox platform in early 2020. Every song portrays a specific emotion and reflects some part of a relationship; whether it’s vulnerable realizations on the Trap ballad ‘hONEST’, or a solemn moment on the alternative Pop song ‘aT tHe mOMENT’, Hakami manages to open up completely and invites us in to see the deepest parts of his soul. ‘Polaroid Dreams’ means filtered photos, and as the title of the debut EP indicates, they are all manifested as a dream. The switch between lowercase and uppercase letters in the song titles has a profound meaning and conceptualizes that you have to understand the lyrics in reverse. Caught between dreams and reality, it is not just Hakami showing his feelings to a girl who has done him wrong, it is also the other way around.
