Contemporary homes today are built with the best energy sources in mind. All electric homes used to be the most sought after types of housing units. It was once thought that with all the electric appliances manufactured and made to react to the "I want it yesterday" mind set, the public would only accept electric as their primary source of energy. Now with the price of electric going up and the down turn in the economy, the modern population is more concerned on what is going to happen to our earth. What is going to happen if the electric grids are hit by overloaded systems is a question that is often asked in the heat of the summer when the air conditioning of large industry as well as highly populated housing areas cause blackouts in various parts of the country. Because of this new, more earth conscious, mindset alternative energy sources have become popular. Just exactly what does the term alternative energy refer to? This term has loosely been thrown around since the early 1970's. It was at this time that the primary interest in alternative fuels, referred to both solar and wind energy. Energy sources that are thought to be reusable and mostly free with little or no harm to nature are called alternative energy. Those that are being considered as newly acquired for home prospects include wind, solar, geothermal, and hydroelectric energy. Wind has been one of the oldest alternative energy sources. It has been considered an energy source since 5,000 BC when sails were used for water travel. Since the discovery of wind as an energy source, it has been used for everything from grinding grain to running wind turbine blades. From these uses, man has used to manipulate the wind and use its energy to water livestock, run sawmills, and supply homes with water. With wind turbines installed on less than 1% of US land mass, wind energy could provide 20% of American electricity. Imagine how much money families could save using this alternative energy source. With a modern family using wind power for approximately one quarter of its energy costs, it would only be spending $4 or $5 dollars per month. In addition to wind energy, many more people are looking to remodel their homes to include solar energy. Energy from the sun has been used to bring warmth into homes for centuries. Over the years, people have often used solar draperies and windows as interior decorating to add heat to their rooms. Now as energy analysts have brought the idea of solar hear for entire communities including industry and the private dwelling, solar panels are the way to go. Solar panels not only can be added to the structure of the building that is already in place but the cost of adding this is easily recouped over time by the savings of the remodeling. Alternative energy has become the wave of the educated person looking to save both money and harm to the earth we live on. Wind and solar energy are just two of the newer more often considered types of replacement energy. Now is the time to look at your home and see what you

can do to be more economical and do your part to help save the earth.
