When my cousin came back from a month-long immersion trip, she brought home a lot of things. Aside from the presents we got from her, she also brought some pictures, pins, post cards and other crafts as an addition to her already ballooning collection. But what really surprised me is when she starting talking in Spanish. One month seems a very short time to learn a new language but she could really converse in Spanish. I heard her talking to a bilingual neighbor the next day using the foreign language and I could really say that they understand each other. I grew curious that's why I asked her how she learned so fast. Immersion was the biggest factor that contributed in her success of learning Spanish. Living in a country where Spanish is the primary language could really give you the biggest exposure. They use it in everything from asking for a way to buying food, greeting an official to having a check up. Even if she has a translation dictionary, it is not enough if she wants to stress on something. Her exposure and constant practice made her able to do conversational Spanish. Although her accent is a little bad, the fact remains that she can speak the language in a very beneficial way. According to her, before she learned Spanish, she went into a lot of trouble. She bought a wrong supply, got lost in the city, missed her bus and almost got into a fight because of lose change. That made her very persistent in learning Spanish the fastest way she can. In addition to the immersion, she also borrowed some books from the local library and learned translation lessons of common words and phrases. She would buy a local newspaper and try to translate it using her dictionary and the books. Then she would ask her local friends if her translation is right. She also talk a lot in Spanish even if its not well polished as long as she can get a chance and they would immediately correct her. From there, the input was tremendous but she has to keep up and work double time to assimilate everything. Her hard work paid off and before she left the community, she was asked to give a short speech in Spanish for the locals. Upon hearing her story, I felt proud about her. Those made me want to learn it too. However, I will not be allowed for an immersion so I had to look for an alternative way to learn Spanish aside from the book self-study. With my cousin's help, we found an online resource teaching Spanish for free. The lessons are very nice because they are interactive, properly phased depending on the level of understanding by the user. There are lots of activities that you can use to practice your Spanish skills. They have games, puzzles and quizzes that surely helped me. The learning was made fun and in a matter of two months I was already able to converse with my cousin in a very confident way. The immersion experience she had was indeed the best way to learn Spanish but if you do not have the opportunity to do so learning using textbooks, language software and online are the best alternative.
