Alternative sources of energy are the only future that our planet can afford. If we keep burning oil and gas at our current rate of consumption, we are going to burn out within the next fifty to one hundred and fifty years. Worse than that, we are going to be beholden to those countries with the largest oil and gas supplies. To fix this problem we must utilize alternative sources of energy. Wind power is one of the cleanest known energy sources. Windmill farms have become a boon to farmers as they receive a paycheck for windmills built on their property. And the wonderful thing is, they can still farm the land. The downside of wind power is two-fold. First, the turbines turn so fast that they are dangerous to birds. Second, some wind farms are turning out power that is going nowhere. The lines to carry the power from the wind farms have not been built. This is a significant problem. Energy companies can afford to build the wind farms but cannot work fast enough to lay the lines that would transmit the power. Solar power is probably the cleanest among the known alternative sources of energy. However it is not a big enough business yet to bring the costs down. The average home-owner is looking at a $20,000 bill for retro-fitting a home with solar panels. One solution has been cooperatives where home-owners combine to bring down the price. To some, nuclear power is considered an alternative source of energy. However, many are afraid of a leak like the one that happened in Chernobyl, Russia. An even bigger problem with nuclear power is waste disposal. At present, there is no site for the permanent disposal of nuclear waste because no one wants it in their area. There's just no way to guarantee safety for the area residents or the area's water supply should an underground leak occur. Among the alternative sources of energy, nuclear is actually the least efficient. One large reactor cannot provide as much power as a coal-fired plant of similar size. Alternative sources of energy are needed to drive our cars as well. Hydrogen has been used to run race car engines and is still in the testing stages. Water is being considered as an alternative fuel. Water-fueled cars would not release any pollution into the atmosphere. Hopefully clean fuel and energy technologies will be widely available soon.
