Venturing Area 3

At this event you will meet fellow Venturers and Advisors from all around the country as they come to enjoy the Greater St. Louis Area Council’s facilities. This is an event where you will be able to set up camp with your Crew in large camporee style fields and then participate in many, many different activities. There are usually over 100 different events and activities to keep you busy all weekend, for instance: military and police demonstrations, slacklining, medieval combat with padded weapons, and a mountain man rendezvous. In addition to the events and activities that the Crews put on, there also all of the facilities that Beaumont has to offer, such as Mud Cave, the climbing tower, shooting sports, and horses.

Area 3 Venturing President’s Corner Hey Venturers! I am Lizzie Schneider, and I serve as the 2013-2014 Central Region Area 3 Venturing President. We have a very busy year in Area 3, and I have a lot on my plate with fulfilling the goals I have set to best serve the youth in our area. I hope to increase communication with all councils, as well as work to create success within council Venturing Officer’s Associations. This summer alone has been a testimony to my vision for the rest of the year. Through the heat, I have filled my summer with exactly what I love - scouting! I started the summer by chairing a dinner for the Greater St. Louis Area Council that celebrated Venturers and their accomplishments over the year. I was recognized with the 2013 VOA Outstanding Service Award. I went on to attend the Central Region Venturing planning conference to prepare myself for the upcoming year. I have attended several crew activities throughout the summer and visited Swift Base - a Venturing Summer camp - to give a presentation and interact with other Venturers. My most recent adventure was being the Crew Vice President for the 2013 GSLAC National Youth Leadership Training Course for participants from multiple councils. NYLT allowed me to pass on knowledge of leadership to others while spending a week hiking and canoeing with staffers that doubled as my best friends! I hope your summer has been as exciting as mine has, and I look forward to meeting you and others as I go on more adventures during my term. Don't forget to say hi! Yours In Venturing, Lizzie Schneider

Task Force Area 3 Sea Scout Boatswain’s Corner Katie Bruton is the Task Force Area 3 Boatswain. She is the Able Rank in Ship 5454 in Union, MO. Last year, Katie went on a high adventure sailing trip on Lake Huron. She went with other Sea Scouts in her area including her boatswain’s mate, Courtney Palm; the Central Region Boatswain, Peter Schmidt; and his boatswain’s mate, Lucas Shapland. The trip was featured in the May 2013 issue of Boys’ Life. You can see photos that were featured in the magazine at: http://boyslife.org/features/39304/seascouts-lake-huron-photo-gallery/ They sailed a J35 racing yacht, known as the Griffin, down Lake Huron from Mackinac City, Michigan to Port Huron, Michigan. Katie was the youth planner for this year’s trip. They planned to have a Kodiak and complete many Sea Scout requirements for all of the scouts attending. They had also planned to visit Sarnia, Canada and race Cal 25’s, which is another type of sail boat. Unfortunately, the trip was canceled because the Griffin suffered from hull and keel damage while it was racing and had to drop out of the race. To learn more about last year’s trip, read Katie’s journal and other scouts’ journals at: http://phyc.org/sea-scouts If you have any questions about the trip or would like to attend the trip next year, feel free to contact Katie. Katie just got back from visiting family in Connecticut. While she was there she went to New London and visited the Mystic Whaler which was in port that day. The Mystic Whaler is an 83 foot long schooner sail boat that was originally built in 1967 and was rebuilt in 1993. There are 3-day trips for Sea Scouts where you can experience hands on sailing, learning and complete Sea Scout advancement requirements including the Qualified Seaman Bar. To learn more about this great experience, visit this website: http://www.ship110-ct.org/page20.html To learn more about the Mystic Whaler, you can visit this website: www.mysticwhalercruises.com/ Mark your calendars! Planning for the 2014 Central Region Rendezvous has begun! It will be hosted by the Abraham Lincoln council on May 16, 17, and 18 on Lake Springfield at Camp Illonek. The Rendezvous is for Venturing-aged Scouts who are ready to have some fun! Look for more information about the 2013 CR Rendezvous in the upcoming newsletters! See you there!
