What Are We Called?

In case something about Venturing crosses your desk, one of the firm rules about Venturing-speak is that the name of the program is Venturing.

Therefore, a crew is a Venturing Crew,not a Venture or Venturer crew.

A youth is called a Venturer.

Advisors and other leaders are Venturing Advisors and such, not Venture or Venturer leaders.

Venturing leaders take Venturing training,

not Venture or Venturer training.

Spotlight

Dan Mitchell will be serving as the Simon Kenton Council VOA President for 2013-2014. Dan is a 19 year old Venturer from Crew 2185 and Ship 280 in the Simon Kenton Council in Columbus, Ohio. Dan also serves as Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 356. Dan received is Arrow of Light in 2005, Eagle scout in 2011, Venturing Bronze in 2011, Venturing Gold and Silver in 2013.

On November 9, Dan received the Venturing Leadership Award. Dan is also a Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow. Dan is the past lodge chief for Tecumseh 65 and recently elected Vice Chief for Section C4-B and will serve as the Lodge Communications Chairman for 2014.

Dan has made the most of his scouting adventure. Dan

attended the 2010 National Scout Jamboree at Ft. AP Hill, Virginia.

He completed 104 mile Canoe trek at Northern Tier High Adventure Base. He attended NOAC at Michigan State University in 2012. Dan also served as the VP of Meal Coordination for the combined crew from Simon Kenton, Buckeye, Miami Valley and Tidewater councils for the 2013 National Scout Jamboree at the Summit in WV.

Sea Base, The Summit and More!

Area 4’s President Henry Gunther’s crew from Akron, OH in the Great Trail Council, has been on the move! Two crews from Venturing Crew 2001 were in Florida in December and January.

One was sailing and the other completing the SCUBA Adventure program at BSA’s Sea Base, located in Islamorada in the Florida Keys where they spent a week exploring the ocean’s floor.

The SCUBA crew had a total of ten dives at sites ranging from Alligator Reef to Captain Grumpy, The Aquarium, and The Pillars of Poll Results Atlantis! The sea life was amazing!

The Officers of the Central Region Area 4 Venturing Officers Association (C4VOA) invite you to raft the river or fly through the tree canopy with them in the New River Gorge of WV

New River Experience May 9-11, 2014 approx. $100 each (a steal for the value you get) Advisors – we are doing it all with our easy registration and full programming Venturers – meet new friends from across the Area and have a wild time Not a venturer, but want to attend? Call your council office and tell them you want to join a Venturing Crew so you can attend this event. They will hook you up with a Crew and then you can register with your new Crew or as a provisional member. (If you are a registered Boy Scout then the registration is free!)

We need staff – contact us directly and get a special t-shirt for helping us out.

You get a day of rafting on the Lower New River – OR – a Canopy Tour through the gorge. We provide all your meals served by our outfitter, a spacious and dry tent camping area, easy registration for you and your crew, an opportunity to be part of the largest Capture the flag game in Area Venturing History, and experience great evening programming and a cool t-shirt.

Easy registration online and the latest details at area4.crventuring.org You will need a current BSA Annual Health and Medical Record and special forms required by our outfitter, River Expeditions.

What to bring: A tent and a sleeping bag, a chair, your Crew uniform or the Venturing Green Uniform, clothing appropriate for Whitewater, Canopy tour and the evening event. You may bring patches to trade and games to play also.

The New River in spring is the largest volume Class V Whitewater River in North America. Spring rafting is a thrill ride with typically higher water levels, making the waves, holes and white water rapids more intense. Weather temperatures average 71 degrees in May.
