Recent Events Venturing Fest 2016 This event was held at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in Glen Jean, West Virginia from July 31st to August 6th. Venturing Fest was attended by venturers all over the nation and we even had a Venturing crew come from Canada too! There was plenty to do including: whitewater rafting, zip lining, shooting sports, Ranger classes, BMX biking, Mountain biking, service projects and many other options. Venturing Fest is a great event and I encourage everyone to go to the next one on the 20th anniversary of Venturing in 2018 (July 1st -6th)!!!
GTC Venturing Luau and Pool Party On August 20th the Great Trail Council Venturing Officers Association of Area 4 hosted a pool party and luau at Camp Manatoc in the Cuyahoga National Park. This year we enjoyed a fiesta at the luau with festive sombreros and plenty of Mexican food too! The youth enjoyed swimming, water polo, basketball, giant jenga, corn hole and other fun summer activities. After the pool had closed we gathered in the dining hall for s’mores and a really awesome game of charades!! Makahiki 2016 August 5-7, 2016 brought great fun to Warsaw, Indiana for participants of Makahiki. Events included, the Hungry Hawaiian, Hand Paddle Canoe Race, Tacky Tourist Relay, Minute to Win-It Games, Canoe Swamp and the list goes on. Units from as far away as Wisconsin joined in on the festivities and enjoyed the Dance Friday night, the Luau Saturday and the closing ceremonies on Sunday. Ali Nui King and Queen were crowned as part of the Luau festivities. Crew 2111 and Ship 5111 were represented and fared quite well during the events! Next year is the 50th anniversary for Makahiki and we would love to make it a banner year. Mark your calendars now for this amazing event! August 4-6, 2017, we hope to see you there!

Camping Recipe DUTCH OVEN POPCORN Servings: 4
Preparation Time: 30 minutes Challenge Level: Moderate What You’ll Need: 1/4 cup vegetable oil 3/4 cup popcorn kernels Salt and softened butter to taste
12-inch camp Dutch oven Large serving bowl
What You’ll Do: Coat bottom of Dutch oven with oil, then warm over 25 coals. Cover bottom of oven with popcorn kernels. Replace lid.
Cook the corn, rotating oven a quarter-turn per minute to avoid hot spots. Remove oven from coals once corn popping begins to slow. Don’t wait too long on this step; otherwise, popcorn will burn. Carefully pour popcorn into a large serving bowl. Add softened butter to the warm popcorn, if desired, then salt or season to taste.
