Kris has served as the Area 7 Venturing Advisor for twelve years, and was asked to become the Central Region Venturing Advisor, which he took over the position effective June 1st. Rachel is from Des Plaines Valley Council in LaGrange, IL. She brings years of proven leadership and communication skills to the Area-level of Venturing. She was also very much involved and held numerous leadership roles as a collegiate member of Sigma Kappa Sorority (Beta Nu). Serving as the Area 7 Venturing Associate Advisor of Communication since 2012, Rachel has extensive experience in newsletter creation and social media, as well as working with youth. NEW VENTURING AWARDS
Last month, the New Venturing Award designs were released by the National Venturing Cabinet. The Venturing, Discovery and Pathfinder Awards are all patches that will be worn on the uniform on the left chest pocket. Once a Venturer has earned the Summit Award, they will receive the Summit Award patch which reads “Lead the Adventure, Summit Medal (which is an adaptation of the outgoing Silver Award Medal), as well as the green and silver knot (this is the same knot used for the Silver Award) that they can put on their uniform. ADVISORS MINUTE As many of you know, the Advisor doesn’t typically write an article for our regular newsletter. But, since this is the ending of one era, and the beginning of another, I wanted a chance to write a little something. This past year in Venturing has definitely been filled with many accomplishments within our Area. Our annual “Area Extravaganza”, which is our fall outdoor fun event held in October, brought us well over 170 participants & staff on what was the warmest one we’ve seen so far! Making us the second highest attended fun event in the Central Region. In addition, our annual spring Venturing Conference in March welcomed 130 participants, with at least one representative from each of our 11 councils! Which I am pleased to announce makes it the highest attended Venturing conference in not just the region, but the nation! But none of this success would have happened without the phenomenal youth team that we had last year. They truly were one of the strongest groups that I have ever seen, and that’s just from my view as an Associate Advisor. I know that there was much more done that we may not have seen, but without any of their efforts, the Area would not be where we are today. I want to Congratulate and thank you all for a wonderful job well done. To our incoming youth and adult members: The bar has definitely been set high! But, each of you were picked for extremely good reasons. So, we know that you will not just handle the job, but help take us to the next level and succeed even more. I look forward to working with each of you and starting on this new journey together. To Kris, our past Area Advisor: Words cannot describe the legacy you have left behind. You have left some very big shoes to fill. But throughout your time served, you have truly shown us what this entire program means to you. I know that the decision to move on to the Region level was not easy, but rest assured, the Area is in good hands. I hope that I can be as humble of a servant as you were. Thank you for everything you have done, it truly is appreciated in more ways than you can even imagine. To all the Venturing members of Area 7: Thank you for your continued support of Area 7! If you enjoyed what we brought you last year, just wait until you see what this year’s team has in store! From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank so many people for giving me this opportunity and entrusting the Area under my guidance along with the youth. It truly means a lot to me, more than words can ever be written or spoken. Again, I want to thank you all as we move forward this year in Area 7. Please don’t hesitate to contact me at: rzahrobsky416@gmail.com for any reason, I am here to help in any way that I can.
Yours in Venturing, Rachel

VENTURER SPOTLIGHT Meet Kevin Leahy, in this issue’s Venturer Spotlight! Kevin is from Crew 2049, chartered by the Lemont United Methodist Church in Lemont, IL. He is 16 years old and is currently attending Lemont High School. Kevin is on the honor roll, a member of the Varsity bowling team, as well as recently having stage-managed the LHS spring musical, “Guys & Dolls”.
Kevin Leahy DesPlaines Valley Council Crew 2049
Kevin also belongs to an after-school program that focuses on educating students about renewable energy, called, “Project Infinite Green.” Through Project Infinite Green, he’s had the opportunity to present a green energy plan to the STEM caucus on Capitol Hill, the American Nuclear Society and the Illinois Energy Council. He’s also had the chance to work with students in a Chicago charter school instructing the children on the benefits of solar energy. Recently, he and his team launched a YouTube channel exploring the topic ""What Is Energy?"
As for college, Kevin hopes to attend a notable university and wants to major in engineering, with a minor in a business. His dream job is to manage a start-up company that benefits the environment. He wants to be outdoors as much as possible! Kevin initially joined Venturing because of all of the high adventure opportunities available. One of his greatest Venturing memories so far is his trip to Florida Sea Base, where he went diving and was able to see all the incredible marine life. Preparing for that trip over the year was one of his best times getting to hang out with his Crew. Kevin has a very strong Scouting background. He has earned 68 merit badges, 4 NOVA awards, the World Conservation Award and the National Outdoor Award. He recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout with 3 palms. Kevin has also served as his Troop’s Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) as well as the SPL for Des Plaines Valley Council’s 2013 Jamboree Contingent. He served as Crew leader on their 2012 Philmont trek and 2014 Sea Base Scuba Live aboard. He has worked at Des Plaines Valley Council Tall Grass Day Camp shooting range for 5 years, as well as serving Camp Shin-Go-Beek and Camp Mach-Kin-O-Siew. He is a Brotherhood member of Pachsegink Lodge, serving currently as Ceremonies Chairman, and lodge secretary in the past. As part of the DPVC Venturing Crew 2388, Kevin participated in an underwater remote operated vehicle program culminating in a regional (MATE) completion in which their team took first place! While he describes amazing experiences while in the program, another of his favorites is taking a canoe trip down the Buffalo River in Arkansas. Another was from his time at the 2013 National Jamboree, in which he describes the day of service as an amazing experience. His Troop was tasked with restoring an outdoor theatre, where they painted the building and stage along with landscaping the surrounding area. He was amazed to think that 40,000 scouts were also participating in other activities just near where he was. Something interesting about Kevin away from Scouting? He is a juggler and juggles/hacky-sacks everywhere he goes!

“V ENTURING D AY ” A T D ISCOVERY O UTPOST As we talked about in our last issue, Northwest Suburban Council opened the first of its kind recruiting center for the Boy Scouts of America. It is called Discovery Outpost and is located at Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, Illinois. On Saturday, August 23rd, members of the Area 7 VOA hosted a “Venturing Day”, complete with “minute to win it” type games, videos featuring our program, candy, and all the Venturing information you wanted to know! Even though the weather outside was stormy, it made for a great day inside! We are happy to report that in the time we were there, we were able to talk to 5 potential new Venturing members who were very interested in joining a crew. If you haven’t gotten the chance to head over there, please do! They will be offering fun activities throughout the months ahead. For more information please visit: http://www.discoveryoutpost.com

NEWS ABOUT THE TRIPLE CROWN AWARD
The Summit Bechtel Reserve is now a part of the Triple Crown of National High Adventure Award. And a new honor, the Grand Slam of National High Adventure Award, recognizes Scouts who participate in qualifying high-adventure programs at all four national high-adventure bases. That’s Northern Tier, Philmont, Sea Base and the Summit Bechtel Reserve. Above is a look at the redesigned patches for the Triple Crown award. Now that there are four different qualifying combinations of high-adventure bases, the award needed four different patches:
Philmont, Sea Base, Northern Tier
Summit, Sea Base, Northern Tier
Philmont, Summit, Northern Tier
Philmont, Sea Base, Summit
The patches include animals to represent each national high-adventure base: a bull for Philmont, a loon for Northern Tier, a dolphin for Sea Base and a black bear for the Summit. The Grand Slam award patch design will be unveiled soon. Applications for both awards are being accepted now, but because the new patches will take time to produce, processing won’t begin until November for those who attended the Paul R. Christen National High Adventure Base at the Summit. Back to School Facts: Schools in Germany, only have six weeks of summer vacation. Everyone's favorite coloring utensil, the crayon, ranks #18 on the list of most recognizable scents, according to a study done by Yale University. In the Color Census of 2000, blue was voted the favorite crayon color. The worst? Tan, tumbleweed and spring green. Approximately 480,000 yellow school buses carry 25 million US children to and from school every weekday.
