RECAP OF THE CONFERENCE This past May, Area 7 Venturing brought an entirely new concept to their annual Conference. The Conference was held at Rink Side Sports and Family Entertainment Center inside Gurnee Mills Mall. Here, youth were able to participate in the "Art of the Bronze". Throughout the day's activities, each Venturer was able to complete 7 of the 9 requirements that were needed to receive the Arts & Hobbies Bronze Award. It was a great day filled with informative presentations regarding a number of topics, ice skating, ice rink maintenance, mini golf, games galore, and some great networking opportunities! (And even a birthday celebration for National Venturing President, Dustin Readenour who was able to join us for the day!) We also would like to thank the National Venturing Vice-President, Sarah Mittrucker, and the Central Region Venturing President, Lizzie Wisman, for joining us! During the Area Court-of-Honor, we were honored to present Lauren Russell, the NEIC VOA VP her Council Venturing Leadership Award!

In addition, we presented three Area Venturing Leadership Awards to the amazing youth from our Area team: Katlin Adams Amanda Field Alexis Yakich

In more historical news, the 2013 14th World Scout Moot is taking place in Quebec, Canada. This is the first time this world event has been held in Canada, and has never been hosted in the United States. Geared towards Scouts aged 1826 from across the globe, the gathering focuses on culture, travel, adventure, peace, ecology, and friendships. There are 2,300 Scouts from 81 different countries attending! Area 7's very own Ken King and Karissa Malcom, both from Three Fires Council, are part of the 11-person USA Contingent. As some of you may or may not know, Venturing is currently undergoing some changes and upgrades to the current structure. The new vision for Venturing uses youth-led adventures and a simplified program model to provide a means of developing leadership skills, reinforcing the value of service to others, and creating opportunities for personal growth in line with the Scout Oath and Scout Law. To learn more about the Changes, visit: http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/Venturing/NewProgAnnouncement.aspx A big Congratulations goes out to our 2012-2013 Vice President of Program, Alexis Yakich, on receiving her Venturing Silver Award on August 4, 2013. A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Hey everyone guess what?! I’m back! Now for those of you who may not know me, I am Katlin Adams. I was last years Vice President of Administration and I have been honored enough to be your Area 7 Venturing President this year. Being chosen last year as a Vice President for this Area really changed my entire experience in Venturing. Being an area officer pushed me to a level I would have never imagined for myself. The experiences and people that I met through being a VP truly pushed me to do more. Every experience, from making operating procedures to helping run an event with over a hundred people, it all taught me something. I can only hope that as President I can do and learn more. All of you are the reasons I push this Area to be better, because all of you deserve the best. I want to make this term the best it can be not only for my team, but for all of you. I hope all of you are ready for an amazing year because I know I am! I can’t wait to see all of you soon. Yours in Venturing, Katlin Adams 2013-2014 Area 7 President Central Region Venturing

Fun Facts About Summer

FUN IN THE SUN!

The "Dog Days of Summer" refers to the weeks between July 3 - August 11. They are named after the Dog Star (Sirius) in the constellation of Canis Major.

COLOR ME!

Mosquitoes, summer's pest, have been around for more than 30 million years. Hurricane season begins June 1st & lasts until November 30th. The frequency of a cricket's chirps fluctuates with the temperature. If you count a cricket's chirps for 15 seconds and add 37, you will have the approximate outdoor temperature (in Fahrenheit). August is the busiest month for travel & tourism. Watermelon is not a fruit, but a vegetable. Summer vacations in other parts of the world are much shorter than in the US. Frisbees were invented by accident. This toy was creased in the 1870s as a pie plate. Students started throwing them around in the 1940s changing the use to a form of entertainment. The Eiffel Tower grows in summer. This historic structure is made of iron. Metal expands with heat. As a result, the Eiffel Tower can grow more than six inches in hot weather.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH If you have a recipe you would like to have featured in the newsletter, please contact us and let us know! It doesn't have to be for a Dutch Oven, it can be for anything! Also, if you try the recipe, give us some feedback and let us know how it turned out! Any feedback received will be put in the next newsletter. Happy Cooking!
