2013 NATIONAL JAMBOREE MEMORIES BY: ROBERT GROSS AREA 7 ASSOCIATE ADVISOR OF ADMINISTRATION The BSA's 2013 National Jamboree at the Summit has provided me with many lasting memories, many of those thorns and many of those roses. One of the roses is that, as a member of the shooting sports staff, I was assigned to sub camp Echo 3, section 313, tent 7. This was one of many staff tents, row upon row, tent upon tent, each holding 4 adult volunteers. I had a wonderful set of tent mates with whom I will now have a lasting friendship, having shared many unique Jamboree experiences together. Every evening at roughly 10:15-ish (remember that this is scout time), a bugler in our site would begin to play Taps in crystal clarity. Then, as he finished, a bugler in the next site over would play the last three notes of Taps with him and continue with it for their site. I never found out who they were so let this memory be a thank you to them. These guys were obviously accomplished musicians and they never missed a note for the entire duration of the Jamboree, rain or stars.
THE ANONYMOUS BUGLER
You'd think that that was the end of it. It wasn't. Shortly after Taps ended, the symphony chorus would start. We had tenors in one tent, bases in another. Then the baritones would start their snoring. The crickets kept rhythm. With tent upon tent of adult male snores, all seemed to join in our own unique harmony throughout the night. My tent mates insisted that I was among the greatest of the chorus but I don't remember joining in.
SUNSET OVER SUB CAMP ECHO 3
Morning came too soon and it was off to breakfast and our work assignments. The memory of the chorus remains as a rose of the 2013 National Jamboree.

ANNOUNCEMENTS BY: BRIAN PARRO AREA 7 VENTURING VICE PRESIDENT OF ADMINISTRATION
VENTURING LEADERSHIP AWARDS Are you looking to recognize a Venturer in your council or crew who has been an amazing leader? The answer is the Venturing Leadership Award. These prestigious awards are designed to recognize youth Venturers who have gone above and beyond in leading Venturing at the Council, Area, Region, and/or National level. Every council is able to present at least two awards every year. One interesting fact: for the Council Venturing Leadership Award, you do not have to serve in a Council leadership position. Individual crews may nominate their youth leaders if they feel they should be recognized for their leadership. If you would like to recognize a youth, go to: http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/25-203.pdf and fill out the nomination form. Anyone can fill out the form and send it in to the Council office, so what are you waiting for? For more information on the Venturing Leadership Award, visit: http://crventuring.org/document2.php?s=1&id=694
COUNCIL STANDARDS OF VENTURING EXCELLENCE How can a council be recognized for an outstanding Venturing program? Well the answer is the Council Standards of Venturing Excellence award! This prestigious award recognizes councils that have an active Venturing Officer Association that helps make Venturing the best it can possibly be. One of the requirements is to recognize key youth who are devoted to leading Venturing in their crew or in their council with a Venturing Leadership Award! Isn't that awesome! Do you think your council should earn this prestigious award in 2014? Find out more details at www.crventuring.org and then talk to your Crew Advisor or Council Venturing Chairman! In 2013, Area 7 had four councils almost earn this award! Let’s have four councils earn the Council Standards of Venturing Excellence award in 2014! Deadline is March 1st!

VENTURER SPOTLIGHT Meet Rima Lintakas, in this issue's Venturer Spotlight! Rima is 20 years old and will turn 21 in May 2014. She attends the University of Illinois at Chicago, pursuing a degree in Kinesiology, as she hopes to become a physical therapist. While Rima has only been a part of Venturing for just over a year and a half, she has already earned the Outdoor Bronze Rima Lintakas Award, and plans to complete her Gold and Silver Award Calumet Council requirements before she becomes an adult member in May. Crew 422 She has completed Calumet Council's NYLT program as a participant, and staffed three times since. At the most recent course, she served as the Assistant Course Director of Youth Operations. (The first female to serve in this position!) Now, it may seem that Rima is new to Scouting, but in fact, she has been involved since she was 5-years-old! In addition to her current membership in the BSA, she also has been a nearly lifelong member in the LSA, the Lithuanian Girl Scouts. While the BSA and LSA are similar in many ways, Rima tells us that one of the major differences is the emphasis on cultural aspects. In the LSA, Lithuanian is the only language spoken, and members learn about folk dancing, heritage, and the making of traditional clothing. Rima has earned the Vyr Skauciu Level (equivalent of the BSA Eagle Scout), and serves as the Scoutmaster of Sauluciu Draugove. This is her fourth year in the role serving almost 30 youth! In addition, she has earned the Achievement Medal, Flag Medal, and Homeland's Daughter Medal, which all have equivalents to knots currently offered by the BSA. This past Summer, she lead her group at the Lithuanian Jamboree at Camp Manatoc in Ohio! Although Rima and her parents were all born in the US, all four of her grandparents left Lithuania during World War II, and ended up living in Chicago. Outside of both domestic and international Scouting, she works as a teacher's helper at Maironis Lutheran Cultural School. She also dances in the Spindulys Lithuanian Folk Dance Group. Rima feels incredibly blessed to be a part of both organizations. In her current role in the LSA, she says that although she would like to think she is teaching the youth about knots and the uniform, they are actually teaching her! As for being a part of Venturing and Crew 422, she says that the biggest impact was that she was never left out. Even though most of the members of the Crew were already in-place, she was immediately welcomed as a member of the family and has loved being a part ever since!
