Legislative Update

The 2018 Iowa Legislative session began on Jan. 8. Legislators have been hard at work debating several vital issues, having already passed a water quality bill into law. As of press time, the legislature still has a multitude of open debates including abortion laws, and gun rights, as well as some smaller issues that have yet to gain steam. Senate File 253, also known as “The Personhood Bill” would effectively ban abortions in Iowa. The bill was two votes shy of passing the Iowa Senate Judiciary Committee last session and drew multitudes of protesters to the capitol building in 2017. The debate is scheduled to rage on this year. “I don’t think there is enough support for [the personhood bill]. It is such extreme legislation. It would reduce access to anything that is hormone-based birth control, and it would take away a lot of options for infertility treatments,” State Rep. Beth Wessel-Kroeschell, D-Ames, told The Des Moines Register. Students at Wash have varying opinions on the bill. “I don’t think [abortion] should be up to the lawmakers; it’s the person’s choice if they want to have an abortion or not. So I don’t think they should make the rule if somebody can get one or not,” said Jarrett Dulan ’19. Another big issue in the Legislature this session is gun rights. House Joint Resolution 13 seeks to add the right to bear arms to the Iowa constitution. The bill states, “The sovereign state of Iowa affirms and recognizes the

fundamental right of the people to acquire, keep, possess, transport, carry, transfer, and use arms for all legitimate purposes. Any and all restrictions of this right shall be subject to strict scrutiny.” Strict scrutiny is one of three types of judicial review, and it is the most rigorous. It requires the state to use the least restrictive means necessary to achieve a compelling government objective. Forty-four other states include the right to keep and bear arms in their state constitutions, but only three use the “strict scrutiny” standard. “It really is still a red flag for me that a vast minimum of states have this strict scrutiny language,” Rep. Liz Bennett, D-Cedar Rapids, who served on the subcommittee but voted against the bill, told The Register. A third bill people should watch for is House Study Bill 573. While still in its early stages, the bill could require Iowa students to pass a civics exam to graduate high school. The exam is currently given to immigrants who want to become U.S. citizens. If passed, the bill would affect current freshmen and sophomores. “I think it’s good that we have the option to see if we know the requirement and also kind of open our eyes to what [immigrants] have to go through, but then again, I think it’s kinda ridiculous that it [would be] required to graduate and I just don’t think it should be a requirement,” said Tanaya Sylvester- Lyon, ’20.

Nuclear Threat: Are We Ready?

North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un Sydney Dusek delivered a grave warning to the US in Staff Reporter

his New Year’s Day address. “The entire United States is within range of our nuclear weapons; a nuclear button is always on my desk. This is reality, not a threat,” said Kim. “This year, [North Korea] should focus on mass-producing nuclear warheads and ballistic missiles for operational deployment. These weapons will be used only if our society is threatened.” U.S. President Donald Trump responded to Kim’s threats via Twitter on Jan. 2, tweeting, “North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the ‘Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times.’ Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please tell him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!” The possibility of nuclear conflict between the US and North Korea is becoming increasingly real as the rhetoric between the two states escalates and North Korea continues to advance its nuclear capabilities. According to the US Department of Defense, North Korea conducted an unprecedented level of nuclear tests and ballistic missile launches in 2017. In November 2017, North Korea tested an intercontinental ballistic missile that analysts estimated had a potential range of 8100 km, which would be far enough to reach anywhere in the continental United States from North Korea. While most experts believe that North Korea has not yet developed the technology necessary to the successful re-entry of a nuclear warhead into Earth’s atmosphere, the

North Korea’s nuclear capabilities are progressing rapidly. In January, CIA Director Mike Pompeo said that North Korea could be capable of hitting the US with a nuclear missile in just a “handful of months.” At the present time, no protocol exists regarding how to respond in the event of a nuclear attack during the school day. But Wash, like many buildings constructed during the Cold War era, is equipped with fallout shelters. “Essentially, we would load our students into the fallout shelters until help arrived. That’s about it for now,” said Wash Associate Principal Darius Ballard. The bomb shelters at Wash are located in the weight room, the driver’s ed area, and under the stage. The shelters are not stocked with any supplies at this time. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) had a session on nuclear attack preparedness scheduled to take place in January. “While a nuclear detonation is unlikely, it would have devastating results and there would be limited time to take critical protection steps,” the CDC stated on its website. “Despite the fear surrounding such an event, planning and preparation can lessen deaths and illness. For instance, most people don’t realize that sheltering in place for at least 24 hours is crucial to saving lives and reducing exposure to radiation.” However, the “Public Health Response to a Nuclear Detonation” program was postponed, and the January session instead focused on “Public Health Response to Severe Influenza.” According to the CDC, the change was due to the spike in flu cases this season.

Service Above Self and various other things around the school. “I have countless times seen her trying to find ways to serve people in our building, so I really just thought about her and her desire to serve,” said Darius Ballard. Ballard is a part of the committee that chooses a Washington High School student annually to receive the “Service Above Self” award. “The week of homecoming we had a brand new group of ELL students. Rahel took an active role to being a peer to those students,” said Ballard. I couldn’t think of any reason why she didn’t deserve it,” said Carrington Moore, ‘18. Nshimirimana has volunteered around the community in numerous ways. a non-profit organization in which proceeds from Rotary would be donated in my name,” said Nshimirimana. The organization she chose was ASAC (Area Substance Abuse Council) which provides accessible substance abuse services. “My speech went pretty well and I got to meet great people from the community. Even though I’m not a great public speaker, a lot of people said they loved my speech,” said Nshimirimana. Along with Nshimirimana, seven other students from the area received the Service Above Self Award. “I know for sure that Rahel deserves this a lot- that has always been her mindset and her attitude,” said Sydney Wakeham, ‘19.

Is Love at First Sight Real? Yes. Ben Janssen Sports Editor William Shakespeare said “No sooner met but they, looked, no sooner looked but they loved,” Shakespeare produced brilliant stories depicting love at first sight (most famously Romeo and Juliet). Everyone knows the stories, you see them across a crowded room, from the first moment you lock eyes and you know. Love at first sight is a real thing. The concept of soul mates is similar to the concept of love at first sight. If there is one person on this earth for you, then you must be able to know

right when you look at them, from the first moment of attraction you can tell that you are in love. Everyone has that person that you love, and in some cases, no words need to be spoken for one to love the other, just a passionate glance. According to a study by Pennsylvania University, love can be attributed to physical attraction. In this study, people determined others physical beauty in one sight, an average of 0.13 seconds. You love people based on immediate physical attraction, and people can judge attraction with just one glance. If you are attracted enough to people immediately, that’s how you fall in love with them. Everyone knows the stories, when you see someone you will love for the first time, time freezes, and you just stare into their eyes. This is a real occurrence, according to a study by social psychologist Zick Rubin, the key to

love. Lust is a strong desire towards someone, it doesn’t require knowing personal information about someone. Seeing a handsome guy or a beautiful girl and getting a huge crush makes sense. You may want to really meet that person Paul Schneidermann or start dating them. Staff Reporter A relationship based only on someone’s looks is very shallow and is objectifying. Looks When I hear people talking about are what should matter least in a how the second they saw someone relationship. When purely using looks they knew they wanted to spend the in a relationship, it lends itself to rest of their lives with them, I always being bland and short-lasting. What ask myself how someone could know should matter are the things like they loved a person before they even funny imperfections, the inside jokes, spoke a word to them. Love is an and the memories you create while intricate web of emotions that must with this person. It also objectifies a be built up overtime. initial attraction is seeing someone’s eyes, and once you see the eyes, you convey attraction by continuing to gaze into their eyes for many seconds. To the argument that it is impossible to love someone immediately because you don’t know enough about them, love at first sight isn’t just romantic. Think of mothers with their children; mothers love their children from the first time they see them and continue loving them no matter what they grow up to be. Mothers don’t know anything about the personality or intelligence or how similar they are; they only know that they love their kids. As Ringo Starr sang in “With a Little Help From my friends,” “Yes I’m certain that it happens all the time.” Love at first sight is not only real, but it also happens all the time and can happen to anyone.

mom has been carrying around her precious cargo for nine months. Throughout that time, she has felt the baby grow and develop. This feeling creates a bond between them; so when the mother sees the baby for the first time, she isnt in love with the look of the baby, but the small bundle of joy she has been anticipating for nine months. At its simplest, it is impossible to fall in love at first sight. Love is too complex of a feeling to be felt the second you see someone. The occasional story of falling for a person right away is either an exaggeration or just lust that leads into love.

Can You Die of a Broken Heart? Broken Heart Syndrome and its affect on the human body

Meet Beth: a completely average, 54 year old accountant from Nevada. Beth was going about her everyday business when Kate McCartan she came Profiles Editor home at lunch to find her husband of 19 years cheating on her with his secretary. Now, in the process, of divorce, Beth, a previously healthy women, is finding herself experiencing shortness of breath and chest pain. Suspecting heart problems, though confused with how that could be possible due to her clean bill of health in the past, Beth visits her local physician. When she explains to him the stressful, depressing process of divorcing someone she very much loves, but

no longer loves her, her doctor knew what was up immediately. You see, what Beth has is Broken Heart Syndrome. I know what you are thinking, and yes, it is a legitimate disease. It has been acknowledged by many major medical organizations, and according to The American Heart Association, “Broken heart syndrome, also called stress-induced cardiomyopathy or takotsubo cardiomyopathy, can strike even if you’re healthy.” Women are more likely than men to experience the sudden, intense chest pain — the reaction to a surge of stress hormones — that can be caused by an emotionally stressful event. It could be the death of a loved one or even a divorce, breakup or physical separation, betrayal or romantic rejection. It could even happen after a good shock (like winning the lottery). Broken heart syndrome may be misdiagnosed as a heart attack because the symptoms and test

results are similar. In fact, tests show dramatic changes in rhythm and blood substances that are typical of a heart attack. But unlike a heart attack, there’s no evidence of blocked heart arteries in broken heart syndrome. In broken heart syndrome, a part of your heart temporarily enlarges and doesn’t pump well, while the rest of your heart functions normally or with even more forceful contractions. Researchers are just starting to learn the causes, and how to diagnose and treat it. Though usually treatable, serious cases of Broken Heart Syndrome can lead to death, as Broken Heart Syndrome can lead to severe, shortterm heart muscle failure. It is important this Valentine’s Day season to keep your mental health first, as it can end up affecting your physical health as well. No break up is worth dying for.

Staff Editorial: Legalize Recreational Marijuana We believe that the use of recreational marijuana should be legalized. If marijuana is legalized recreationally, that means it may be used by any adult that is 21 years of age or older, and it may be used purely for pleasure and enjoyment. Marijuana does not have to be smoked, the effects caused by marijuana can be achieved by consuming marijuana in a beverage, food, and even in a tablet. Inhaling any type of smoke is not good for you, but that issue is resolved by these alternative uses of marijuana. A concern that many people have with recreational marijuana is how it will affect minors and young minds. The concern is that the act of legalizing it will make it very easy for minors to obtain, we do not believe that this is true. The most common reason people believe that marijuana should remain illegal is due to their morals and ethics. Many people believe that marijuana is a deadly drug because federally it is still considered a Class I narcotic, which places the substance next to cocaine and crystal meth. This has been proven to be false by researchers in states that it is legal, and they have the ability to observe the short and long term effects it has. We believe that once more attention is brought to the substance in Iowa, the extensive research on it will change many peoples’ minds. A lot of people see marijuana as a drug that makes you lazy or a “stoner”. We believe this is not true, but it can be, there are two main components in marijuana THC and CBD.

THC is the part of the plant that causes a large production of dopamine in your brain which causes the euphoria. CBD is the portion of the plant that contains the medicinal elements, however it does not only affect one part of your body. CBD can have very positive benefits to various parts of your body. So marijuana does not just make you “high” a plant can actually be bred to

There will be some people that will abuse it and use it far to often. A benefit of the legalization of recreational marijuana Gregor pointed out was that marijuana requires farming for the plants. So it could greatly influence the farming wherever it happens to be legalized. “Marijuana would definitely benefit farming in Iowa.” Tate Petersen, ’19, is against recreational marijuana use. Petersen feels that using marijuana when you do not need it is unnecessary. If using the substance is not going to benefit you in any way, you should not use it. Petersen says that medical marijuana use is totally fine, because there is a purpose to using the medication. But recreational use will only cause issues. Petersen says that making it legal in any way would make it far to accessible for minors and many people who shouldn’t be using it. Legalizing it will cause many issues in high schools across the state, because of the legalization it will be more lax to law enforcement. In Petersen’s opinion, marijuana is and should be treated as a dangerous drug unless it is used properly and by the individuals who benefit medically from it. We believe that recreational marijuana use should be legalized. Those who seek alternative medical treatments could greatly benefit from it, farmers would also greatly benefit from the production of it, and those who would like to use it for pleasure and enjoyment would have the ability to.

7 out of 7 Editors agree with this contain no THC at all. So in a sense, it can be made to not make you high, but instead have purely medicinal benefits. Kathryn Gregor, a nurse at Washington High School is in support of recreational marijuana use. Gregor says that the legalization process will more than likely occur within the next 5 to 10 years. She is okay with the age restriction of 21 years of age or older. Gregor says this is an appropriate age. Gregor sees recreational marijuana use as very similar to the use of alcohol. Alcohol is consumed for pleasure by many Americans, there are some people who abuse alcohol and drink too much. Marijuana will be the same way, many people will use the substance occasionally for pleasure.

Emily Slaughter & Bryan Kunde 2012 now

Araya Dunne A&E Editor

Emily Slaughter, ‘18, and Bryan Kunde, ‘18, are the longest reigning “power couple” here at Wash. From short-lived love in sixth grade, to best friends after that, and then trying their romantic relationship again freshman year, Slaughter and Kunde have come a long ways. July 2018 will mark the couple’s four year anniversary. Some adults have trouble keeping a steady relationship for this long, so all one can wonder is, how do they do it as adolescents in high school? Slaughter speaks of their humble beginnings in the Franklin Middle School cafeteria, “I turned to Kayti [Schuler, ‘18] and asked her, ‘Who’s that kid over there? He’s kinda cute.” After Slaughter’s interest in Kunde, a skinny love formed between the pair, which lasted a mere six months. Slaughter recalls only hugging him three times within that six month time frame. She also reminisces on the time that Kunde had bought her a Valentine’s Day gift, but he handed it to her during passing time over the heads of the other students walking by. No sparks flew their first time around, so Slaughter took it upon herself to break it off with Kunde...on his birthday. Their middle

school breakup is still a joke they like to throw around with each other because they’ve matured and learned so much from each other since then. The most important part of their relationship evolution has to be after the middle school breakup when they continued to be best friends, even though they tried having romantic relationships with other people. One

of Kunde’s main points of advice to the lonesome Surveyor readers out there was, “The best thing you can do if you really care about someone is to be their friend first without ‘making moves.’” Kunde sees so much value in their years of friendship during middle school and knows that if it wasn’t for a strong friendship like theirs, their friendship wouldn’t have evolved into a strong romantic relationship today. Besides the deep foundation and past they have together, there is so much more than being friends first that sustains a relationship like theirs. Now that they are far past all of the middle school awkwardness, they both agree that the main points that make their relationship stand out from others and make their relationship worthwhile are:

14

communication, being able to love yourself before you commit to loving someone else, and being able to trust that you will overcome struggles together if you love each other as much as you think you do. Now that Kunde has committed to Wayne State College (Nebraska) and Slaughter plans on staying home to work at her family’s local business, “Tornados”, what will the future hold for the inseparable pair? Kunde and Slaughter have always seen a future together of some sort. “It would be a waste of time to put your energy into an empty relationship”, says Slaughter. Both sides are extremely close to other’s family, which makes “planning for the future” more prominent in their everyday mindset. Although long distance is a struggle that not many couples are strong enough to face, Kunde and Slaughter look forward to it with ease. As long as everything goes well for the rest of the year for these lovebirds, Surveyor’s vote for “Most Likely To Get Married” in the yearbook goes to our favorite couple that some of us have grown up with or at least witnessed in the middle school hallways.

If you’re a student at Washington High School, chances are you’ve seen this freshmen strutting down the hall with her signature white Apple Earpods. Sydney Mitvalsky, or as her friends like to call her ,“2K”, is a 5’7”(according to her) basketball phenom. Mitvalsky has been playing basketball since seventh grade and is already on the girls varsity team. Her favorite pre-game pump up song is “Filthy” by JT. When Mitvalsky was asked to describe herself in three words she said, “Charming, sweetheart and serious. The last one was a joke by the way.” When Mitvalsky isn't busy swishing threes she likes to watch cartoons and play video games with her friends and her brother. Mitvalsky described her dream date as going ice skating and then watching a super scary movie then, maybe grabbing some Orange Leaf. “My favorite spot to eat is definitely Jimmy Johns but also Buffalo Wild Wings is good. So if you're walking down the halls and see this rad chick, don’t be too scared to shoot your shot with this baller.

Bandwagon Fans?

It’s always a sickening feeling when your favorite team says “We’re in the rebuilding process” when you know deep down that your team just sucks and there’s no hope for your team. They start to slowly dismantle your team, trading the star players for prospects that you can only hope turn into MVP type players. After a season or so after the “rebuilding process” you realize your only hope for a bright future is a horrible season so you can score yourself the first round pick and hope they become a star. You then notice a young and talented team emerging from the depth of horrible teams, why would you be fan of a team that is going to be rebuilding for countless years. You think to yourself, you should join a fanbase that would be winning every year, it’ll make you happy every year. It then snaps, you can’t just leave your fan base and your team like that, you have to be loyal to your team so that when the dry spell ends, it will make the moment even better. When that happens you can really call yourself a loyal fan. Many people are accused every year when their team is doing good, accusing them of not being true fans. They try their best to prove that they are true fans but they just can’t do anything to make the haters think otherwise. So we’ve asked people that have been accused of being bandwagon fans, questions about their team wondering how much they know about their team.

Jake Sanders is a Minnesota Vikings fan, he is very passionate about his team and he was ecstatic when they beat the Saints in unbelievable fashion. So we asked Sanders four questions about his team, increasing in difficulty.

Q: What conference do they play in? A: NFC Q: Who are the second wide receivers? A: Laquon Treadwell and Adam Thielen Q: Who is the offensive coordinator? A: Pat Shurmur Q: Who did they lose to in the 2012 Wild Card? A:Packers

Sanders answered four questions right out of four. When asked what was his message to people who claimed that he was a bandwagon fan, he responded with “Go bandwagon the Patriots.”

Jon Anderson is known for being a huge Cleveland Cavaliers fan, you may see him around school with a Cavaliers jersey or you might overhear him talking about basketball. Jon is the perfect person to ask these questions too.

Q: Who are the starting five for the Cavaliers? A: Isaiah Thomas, J.R. Smith, LeBron James, Kevin Love, and Tristan Thompson Q: Can you name the four people in the Cavs Hall of Fame? A: Mark Price, Craig Ehlo, and Larry Nance Q: Who is the head coach of the Cavs? A: Tyronn Lue Q: Who was the head coach before Lue? A: David Blatt Q: What current head coach played for the Cavs for four years? A: Steve Kerr Anderson only answered the question about who was in the Hall of Fame incorrectly, but he was in the right track because all those players were great players in that organization. So Anderson definitely knows past and present players from the Cavs.

18

Jack Conley is in fact a Patriots fan, so we decided to ask Conley four questions about the Patriots to see how much he knows.

Q: What division do the Patriots play in? A: AFC Q: How many offensive players can you name? A: Rob Gronkowski and Tom Brady Q: In the past decade, what year did they not make the playoffs? A: 2008 Q: Who was the head coach before Bill Belichick? A: I don’t know

Conley wasn’t able to name any other players other than the two more popular players, but one thing that helps his case a lot is the fact that he was able to know the last time they didn’t make the playoffs, it does show that he knows a little history but he doesn’t know the most about the Patriots.

Homesick Hockey Players

Every year a handful of new senior boys enter Washington High School from across the country. They’re generally quiet, reserved, and you’ll never see them after fourth hour. That is unless you go down to the Ice Arena. They’re the Cedar Rapids Roughriders hockey players, here to play with the team and continue on to college hockey and, hopefully, the National Hockey League. Wash has three student Roughriders this year, #8 Harry Roy, #18 Josh Bohlin, and #19 TJ Walsh, all forwards, all ’18. The boys live with host families in the Cedar Rapids area, and take classes at Wash in the morning before going to practices and games. “It’s my first year with the team and it’s been going great so far. [My host family has] been awesome to me. They’ve been housing kids for 14 years now, so they know how to do it, and they treat me awesome. It’s great to have them around. They’re very supportive,” said Bohlin. Life with a host family can be a significant change. TJ Walsh and his host family. Photo “It’s different. It takes some adjusting. learn how to be more independent and do things on your own, but it’s nice to be around all your teammates and live with some of your teammates,” said Walsh. Some of the players know what it’s like to be far from home. “I would say [my year has] gone pretty smooth so far. Last year I went to a prep school, so I also lived away. I’m kinda used to it, but it’s good to always be around the guys and build a lot of chemistry,” said Roy. With Roy and Walsh both being from the Boston area, they don’t get to see their actual families much. “Usually they’ll come out and visit us two or three times a year, and then we go home on Christmas, and we’re home all summer as well,” said Walsh. Bohlin has it a little easier with his family only being four hours away in Wisconsin. “Once every three or four weeks [my family will] come to a game. It’s pretty far, but sometimes they’ll make the drive,” said Bohlin. All three boys have big plans for the future. Walsh and Bohlin are committed to playing Hockey at Boston College and The University of Wisconsin, respectively. Roy plans to stick around CR for another year. “The plan for me is to do this year then one more season here again next year. I’ll take a gap year between high school and college, and then I’ll be playing at The University of Maine in 2019,” said Roy. Be sure to check out the Roughriders this year and say hi when you see Walsh, Bohlin, and/or Roy in halls.

Dedric Ward: Super Bowl Champ

Imagine walking out of the dark tunnel to thousands of fans yelling your name, wearing your jersey and ready to watch you play in the Super Bowl. It’s a dream most young football players have at some point in their life. There are few who actually go on to live that dream, and even fewer who are from Iowa. One of those people is working at Washington High School. Dedric Ward was born in Cedar Rapids and grew up playing football. In high school, Ward was a running back and a receiver for the Warriors, but liked playing as a receiver more. “That mix of wanting the ball but not wanting to get hit every play kind of led me to be more of a receiver,” Ward said. Ward went on to play receiver at the University of Northern Iowa for four years. “The smaller school and the winning mentality that came with it made it fit my style as opposed to a

bigger school,” Ward said. While at UNI, Ward amassed more than 4,000 receiving yards as well as 50 touchdowns. After putting up impressive numbers at UNI, Ward was drafted in the third round of the 1997 NFL Draft, the 88th overall pick by the New York Jets. He played with them until 2000. After a little bit of moving around, including stops with the Miami Dolphins and Baltimore Ravens, Ward found himself on the New England roster midway through the 2003 season and played in Super Bowl XXXVIII (38) with the Patriots. “There was so much stuff surrounding the game in the weeks leading up to it. It was so overwhelming, almost to the point of it being bigger than the game itself. There’s so much media and fan attention, but it was an exciting experience. It’s something that every

19

player wants to achieve,” Ward said. Today, Ward chooses to take what he learned in the NFL and apply it his everyday life. “It’s so amazing how many things I found that are Dedric Ward from his playing days with the New York parallel between Jets. Photo courtesy of The life and the NFL. Gazette As a coach, as a mentor, and as a friend,” Ward said. Ward loves to use his life experiences to be a better person. The lessons he learned helped him shape the life he has today and gave him the ability to guide and help others.

Self Love 101

Araya Dunne A&E Editor

High school is a journey of self discovery, meeting new people, and trying new things. All of these things combined can lead to an overwhelming amount of insecurities that I’m sure everyone around you has struggled with before. This Valentine’s Day, I encourage you to think about this concept: Self Love. Whether you’re in a relationship or not, this applies to you regardless. Emily Slaughter, ‘18, who has been in a relationship for nearly four years (pg. 19-Profiles), told me “It’s so important to love yourself before you love someone else” and I believe her completely. Although you may have some days that are worse than others when it comes to selfappreciation, I believe if you truly want to feel better in everything you do, applying these actions everyday will help you along your Self Love journey.

Books on “self love”:

-”Neon Soul” by Alexandra Elle -”The Sun and Her Flowers” by Rupi Kaur -”I Love My Love” by Reyna Biddy

“Be you, love you. All ways, always.” -Alexandra Elle

1. Avoid being your own enemy.

Many of us are our own biggest critics. Although you may not have performed as well as you would have liked on the field, on the stage, or on that math test last hour, you have realize that in that moment you tried your best and that is the only thing you could’ve done. Try your best to move on from the negatives.

“How you love yourself is how you teach others to love you.” -Rupi Kaur

2. Do what makes you happy.

People will try and tell you who to be or how to act, but you’ll never reach your full potential if you don’t do some things that make you happy as well. Do what you love and don’t waste time on things that don’t matter to you.

3. Cut out toxic people, environments, and activities. This one’s a biggie. Have you ever been around a person that always brings down your vibe? If your answer was “yes”, you should distance yourself from them as much as possible for your own good. Trust your gut. If a person or situation gives you bad vibes, there’s a reason.

4. Fake it until you make it!

If you struggle with confidence, “faking it until you make it” might sound sophomoric, but it’s a HUGE help! If you walk with your head up high even after you’ve had a hard day, you’ll eventually realize how much good this does! I’m not any sort of a self love expert, but these are just some of the key points that I’ve learned along the way. I hope you learn from and apply these everyday into your lives. After you begin to find who you are and love the person you’ve become, it’s truly a life changing mindset.

“Loving yourself is the most fulfilling and beautiful love that life has to offer. Unfortunately, we’re all looking to love someone else.. we’re all looking to be loved by someone else, first.” -Reyna Biddy

MANIA ALBUM REVIEW

Hole In The Wall:

The Flying Wienie

In a world where music trends and tastes are ever changing its hard to please everyone. But through 15 years, a long hiatus and seven albums, Chicago-based Fall Out Boy has learned they only need to satisfy themselves. “M A N I A,” Fall Out Boy’s seventh studio album, is an eclectic work of art that is hard to pin down to any one genre. While there are definite nods to Fall Out Boy’s rock roots, there are also dashes of pop, hip-hop, reggae, and gospel. Almost anyone could find a song to like off this album. As confirmed by bassist and lyricist Pete Wentz, the digital tracklisting for “M A N I A” is wrong so this review will go off the physical tracklist. The album opens with ‘Stay Frosty Royal Milk Tea’ an electronic-infused banger complete with an obscure reference to Tonya Harding, some inexplicable french (which could be a callback to the opening track of the band’s last album), and a long title so confusing that Wentz himself doesn’t even understand it. “Uh, Stay frosty’s like a military term that means like keep it cool but stay alert and then, like uh, I don’t really know. But royal milk tea just tastes good, and you can get it in Japan, its good, I recommend it,” Wentz said during a fan Q&A. While the album does take some getting used to, it’s not hard to find its hidden gems. “Sunshine Riptide,” the eighth track, is a chill rock, hip-hop fusion that could easily sit alongside tracks from the band’s 2013 effort “Save Rock and Roll.” The fifth track (and single) “Wilson(Expensive Mistakes)” is a fun rock tune, with lyrics that resonate with every emo kid ever. Despite the change in Fall Out Boy’s sound, the album is littered with callbacks to the band’s past. Fans have noted lyrical references to past fan favorites such as “20 dollar nose bleed,” “American Beauty/American Psycho,” and “Disloyal Order of Water Buffaloes.” Many fans and critics are also comparing the motivating second single “Champion” to the 2015 track “Centuries.” Despite some initial questionability, “M A N I A” might just be the best Fall Out Boy album yet. If you like what you hear, the band will be stopping in Des Moines on Oct. 8, at the Wells Fargo Arena.

Chicago dogs, Italian beef, and more. The Flying Wienie is a classic hole in the wall hot dog joint that has been serving great dogs in Cedar Rapids since 1999.Equipped with an airplane theme, the interior and exterior are decked out with a multitude of model airplanes, paintings of airplanes, three arcade machines, and oodles of retro trinkets that are sure to grab your attention. As soon as you step in, an aroma of hot dogs, ribs, sausage, and various other savory scents wafts to your nostrils triggering instant mouth watering hunger for one of the best hot dogs in Cedar Rapids. The Bacon Cheese Dog is a succulent hot dog with crispy smoked bacon, served on a pillowy bun, smothered with nacho cheese sauce and a side of homemade fries. The hot dog is marvelous, delectable, and oh so flavorful. On the first bite, it explodes hardy flavors of an authentic Chicago hot dog stand; these flavors are the perfect pair for the bacon and nacho cheese. The bacon is fried perfectly and has an astonishingly smokey flavor that couples great with zesty nacho cheese. A soft pillowy bun holds this masterpiece together and provides a delectable texture for the rest of the elements of the Bacon Cheese Dog. The french fries are a homemade wonder. Cut and fried in store, they have a perfect potato flavor that tastes natural and scrumptious at the same time. Put the fries on top of the Bacon Cheese Dog, eat it all together, and the eighth wonder of the world is created.

The Flying Wienie is an incredible hole in the wall that serves out stupendous Chicago cuisine. Their hot dogs have fantastic authentic Chicago flavors that certainly top those of previously reviewed Bigg Daddy’s, and make you want to yell out, “Da Bears.” Also with an atmosphere that sends expectations into the sky like an airplane, The Flying Wienie is a groovy place to grab a bite to eat, play some Pac-Man, or just hang out.
