GRAFTON LAKES STATE PARK TO OFFER MAPLE SUGARING DEMONSTRATIONS To welcome spring, Grafton Lakes State Park is providing one hour backyard maple sugaring demonstrations on Saturday, March 19th, and Saturday, March 26th, at 10am and 11am at the Park Office. The program will demonstrate ten easy steps for making maple sugar at home. It encourages participants to try tapping trees, collecting and boiling the sap down and testing the flavor. This outdoor event is ideal for the whole family and an enjoyable way to celebrate the changing season. All participants can savor a sampling of sap as well as freshly made syrup. The story is about a 12-year old boy who makes a wish on an old carnival machine that promises ‘your wish will be granted’. His wish was to grow up and that he did…overnight. When little Josh Baskin, awakes the next morning after putting his coins in the ‘Zoltar Speaks’ machine he’s a ‘big’ person. For a while being big is an adventure, but eventually Josh wants to be a little again, so together with his friend they must search for another ‘Zoltar Speaks’ machine to request another wish. Will it work? Come find out for yourself! The curtain goes up on Friday, April 8th, at 7:30pm; Saturday, April 9th, at 7:30pm; and Sunday, April 10th, for a matinee at 3:00pm. AUCTION SUPPORTS 4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT The Rensselaer County 4-H Teen Council will host their annual Auction Friday, April 8, 2011, at Tamarac Elementary School, Route 2 in Brunswick. Doors open at 6:30pm, bidding starts at 7:00pm. Auction items will include new and used items, merchandise and gift certificates donated by Rensselaer County businesses, and theme baskets designed and donated by 4-H Clubs throughout the county. Dinner and refreshments will be available. The 4-H Auction is one of two county-wide fundraisers that Teen Council organizes annually. All proceeds from the Auction go toward award scholarships, fair judges, awards, educational activities, trips, and support volunteer recognition efforts. Rensselaer County Sheriff Jack Mahar, Undersheriff Pat Russo, County Executive Kathy Jimino, deputies and staff at the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office help celebrate retired Deputy Sheriff Harold Rowe’s 101st birthday. Officer Rowe is the former director of the Sheriff’s Office Identification Division. Rensselaer County Sheriff Jack Mahar welcomed 101-year-old retired Deputy Sheriff, Harold Rowe to the office where the former director of the Sheriff’s Identification Division worked more than forty years ago. “It was wonderful to have had the opportunity to be a part of this momentous birthday celebration for retired Deputy Sheriff Harold Rowe,” said Sheriff Mahar. “Harold is an exceptional individual with a wealth of knowledge that we as current law enforcement officers value immensely. I’m very pleased to have had the opportunity to spend time with him, reflect on the past together, and learn from his experiences.” A lifelong resident of Wynantskill, Mr. Rowe founded the North Greenbush Ambulance Association in 1941, using his own dry cleaning truck from his dry cleaning business. He was a member of the Wynantskill Volunteer Fire Department, and the assistant commissioner of the local Boy Scouts for 50 years. Mr. Rowe was the first person to photograph crime scenes, accidents and autopsies for the Sheriff’s Office in Rensselaer County. He retired from the Sheriff’s Office in 1982, at the age of 72. For the past several years, Sheriff Mahar and Undersheriff Pat Russo have been spending Mr. Rowe’s birthday with him. He spent his 100th birthday last year visiting the Sheriff’s Office.

FOR KIDS 2011 BRUNSWICK BASEBALL LEAGUE – SPRING BREAK BASEBALL CAMP The Brunswick Baseball League will be hosting two – 8 hr baseball camps during the April School Break. The camps will be conducted on Monday, April 18th, 8am-4pm for players ages 12-15 and Thursday, April 21st, 8am-4pm for players 16 and up. The camps will be held at the Brunswick Sports Complex on State Rte 2. The cost of the camp will be $20 for each player, which will include lunch, snack and a T-shirt. Players will be put thru various fielding/ throwing drills to evaluate their skill levels then participate in group hitting sessions. During the course of the sessions, verbal evaluations and suggestions on areas of improvement will be given by local HS coaches and BBL managers. During the afternoon, session players will be divided into teams and will participate in scrimmages. Players will need to bring a glove, cleats and drinks. SAINT ROSE WORKSHOP HELPS PEOPLE TAKE CHARGE OF STUTTERING The College of Saint Rose will hold its 36th Weekend Workshop for People Who Stutter. With a theme of “Celebrate the Chemistry of Effective Communication – A 40-Year Journey!� this year’s session will mark the 40th anniversary of the Council of Effective Communication for People Who Stutter, as well as the 50th anniversary of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Saint Rose. The workshop will be held Friday, April 1, through Sunday, April 3, in the Thelma P. Lally School of Education, 1009 Madison Ave., Albany. During the three-day session, people who stutter will receive intensive therapy to help them conquer their fears about speech and to learn new ways to better manage their fluency and their stuttering. Saturday and Sunday will include special sessions for both parents and siblings of those who stutter. The workshop addresses the physical, emotional and environmental aspects of stuttering through one-on-one sessions with a therapist and in groups. Participants are taught the skills of normal speech production and are provided with opportunities to practice these skills in a variety of speaking situations. The weekend also includes group sessions designed to explore attitudinal and environmental aspects of stuttering. Parents, family and friends are encouraged to attend a banquet on Saturday. Saint Rose graduate students in communication sciences and disorders provide the therapy under the direct supervision of speech-language pathologists who volunteer their services. The workshop is open to all children, teenagers and adults who stutter. Advance registration is required. Deadline for registration is Monday, March 21. The Weekend Workshop is sponsored by the Saint Rose Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders and the Council of Effective Communication for People Who Stutter. BALANCE CLASSES TO BE HELD AT THE ALBANY JCC Matter of Balance, a series of classes to help people manage concerns about falls, is scheduled to be held in the Albany JCC’s Massry Senior Center, 340 Whitehall Road, on 3 Wednesdays, 1-3pm: April 6, 13 and 27 and on 5 Fridays, 9:30 -11:30am: April 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29. Participants are expected to attend all 8 sessions. The volunteer-led classes are designed to help people reduce their fear of falling, increase activity levels, set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance, improve their quality of life and remain independent. “THE FUTURE OF YOUR WOODS AND WILDLIFE” WORKSHOP A workshop for woodlot owners, The Future of Your Woods and Wildlife, will be held in Sand Lake, NY on Saturday, March 19. Private lands on the Plateau contribute to the overall ecological health of the larger landscape, through stewardship that supports forest regeneration, wildlife populations and movement, and high-quality forests and wetlands. The workshop will offer landowners information and tools needed to understand and address some of the issues facing woodland owners today. Topics will include forest-wildlife management and ecology, how to sell sawtimber, ownership transfer of forest lands, uncommon and at-risk wildlife of the plateau, how to get started on forest stewardship plans, and conservation programs for forest owners. The event is co-hosted by the Rensselaer Plateau Alliance, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Greene and Rensselaer Counties, and sponsored by the NYS DEC’s Hudson River Estuary Program and the Cornell Biodiversity Program Work Team. The workshop will be held at the Zion’s United Christ Church of Taborton, 741 Taborton Rd., from 8:30am to 12:15pm, followed by lunch and an optional woods walk that will end at 2pm. SHERIFF’S EMPLOYEES NEVER OFF-DUTY Off-duty Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office transport officer, Jason Ring, and RCSO nurse, Elaine Young, recently came to the aid of a local teenager after the young man began experiencing a severe diabetic episode while driving and eventually crashing down an embankment on I-90 East near Exit 10. The teen escaped injury when he was pulled from his burning vehicle by Officer Ring and another motorist, and then assisted by Young. As Officer Ring approached the vehicle on foot, it burst into flames from underneath. Officer Ring and another motorist who also stopped worked to pry the victim’s locked fingers from the steering wheel and carry him to safety. Coincidentally, Elaine Young, a former ICU nurse and now a Nurse Supervisor at the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office, was traveling nearby, stopped and also rushed to the aid of the driver. “I saw the flames, but just reacted and used my experience as a nurse to assess the situation and respond as quickly as I could,” said Young who then quickly determined the driver was experiencing a severe diabetic episode. “This was a tremendous rescue effort,” said Rensselaer County Sheriff Jack Mahar. “Vehicular crashes of this type, involving fire and the potential for explosion, make Officer Ring’s and nurse Young’s actions that much more heroic. “They were just on their way home from work, but stopped to help a stranger. They could plainly see the risks to their own safety, but did it anyway. They are a wonderful example of the good people we have working here at the Sheriff’s Office. I’m very proud of them as well as of all of the responders.”

AVERILL PARK ROAD RUNNERS YOUTH CLUB IS NOW TAKING REGISTRATIONS The Averill Park Road Runners Youth Club is now taking registrations for the 2011 Track & Field Season. The club is open to anyone ages 7-14 who likes to run, jump, throw and most of all, have FUN! (You do not have to be a resident of the Averill Park School District.) Kids can choose from many events including sprints, distance running, hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot put, turbo javelin and discus. Practices will be held Monday & Thursday evenings at the Averill Park High School, with several meets throughout the season. The season will run from April 25th through June and finish with the Junior Olympics. Registration is now available on our website at www.aproadrunners.com. The registration fee is only $40, plus uniform if needed. A $15.00 late fee will be added on April 1st. There is a $10 sibling discount. Membership in the United States Track and Field Association ($20) is also required to participate and provides insurance coverage.
