Students Have an Opportunity to Connect with Books and Each Other The Algonquin Middle School Library hosts a series of book discussion groups called, Pleasure Read, facilitated by School Librarian Mrs. Ekstrom and Reading Teacher Mrs. Dowd. Each student reads a book from a genre of their choice and comes to share a summary of their book, as well as their opinions and thoughts. For the first meeting of Pleasure Read, 25 students attended, along with 5 faculty members. Students shared refreshments as they took part in a relaxed discussion of great books. The genres of books that students bring can range from horror to romance. Graphic novels and nonfiction books are sometimes shared by students as well. Insights, opinions, the theme of the book, connections to current events, to other books or books in a series are also discussed. Discussion at Pleasure Read generates thought-provoking questions and respectful debate. This unique opportunity allows students to share favorite books, meet new people, learn about new books they might like to read and to express themselves. AMS students should listen for announcements for details about the second Pleasure Read book club.

DISAPPOINTED DEMOCRAT Letter to the Editor: It is with great disappointment I am writing this letter. For over two decades I have worked hard to elect fellow democrats that I thought were worth supporting. One of those is the Honorable Judge Robert Jacon. But his recent actions have left me wondering. He had the opportunity to join his fellow Democrat, Honorable Judge George Ceresia in appointing Bill Dedrick to the position of Commissioner of Jurors, but instead he voted to appoint an Albany County Resident, Dawn Signoracci. I am sure she is a fine person, but I personally know Bill Dedrick to be the most Honorable and Honest man I have ever met. I had the pleasure of working with Bill Dedrick for seven years in the County legislature and supported him as our Minority Leader. We as Democrats have a few opportunities to support people we feel are of the highest character and should not squander our chances when they are available to us. Sometimes Democrats are their own worst enemies, and by the Honorable Judge Jacon voting with the Rensselaer Republican Majority Leader of the Legislature is just another example of step backwards when they have the opportunity to move forward. ~Keith Hammond, Averill Park Editors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion or endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for all intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of its contents.

The month of March. It comes in like a lion – ice fishermen braving the cold on a frozen and wind swept Crystal Lake. And goes out like a lamb – Averill Park High School runners out of the gym and back on the road. We survived – and even enjoyed – another winter! March is also a great month to consider putting away a little more for your retirement. You have until April 15th to contribute to your IRA for calendar year 2010. Currently, the limit for an IRA is $5000, or $6000 if you’re over the age of 50. If you’re self-employed or a small business owner, your tax advisor may suggest a SEP (Simplified Employee Pension), which enables you to put away up to 25% of your earned income or $49,000, whichever is less. How about a little financial Spring-cleaning? Do you have IRA accounts at several different banks or fund companies? And maybe an old 401(k) or two from previous employers? Consider consolidating those into one well-diversified IRA. Contact your tax preparer or financial advisor to discuss how these ideas might benefit you and your family. This information is general in nature and may not apply to your specific situation. You should consult your own tax advisor regarding your tax needs as Pinnacle Investments, LLC and its representatives do not provide tax or legal advice. Bridget Ball Shaw is a financial advisor for Pinnacle Investments, LLC, 125 Wolf Road, Ste 406, Albany, NY 12205, member FINRA, SIPC. She is a longtime resident of Averill Park and holds a masters degree in Finance from RPI. Bridget teaches Women and Wealth at Russell Sage College and Women in Business at Empire State College.

“PUBLIC SYMBOLS, HIDDEN MEANINGS” LECTURE “Public Symbols, Hidden Meanings” is the title of a lecture which will be presented by historian Martin Bubie on March 17th, at 7:30 PM at the Pittstown Town Hall in Tomhannock. Bubie will talk about the symbolism and artistry of public seals, including ones from the cities, towns, counties, boroughs and villages of Rensselaer County. A retiree from GE, Bubie has been collecting seals for many years on his travels throughout the area as well as in Europe. VOTE FOR RANDY HOWARTH AND CHARLES COLLINS— THE PEACEFUL REVOLUTION Listen up Villagers of Nassau! A peaceful revolution is at hand to restructure our government so as to support the weary taxpayers and proud residents of our village. We don’t need to march in the streets and we don’t need to shed blood, thankfully. All we need to do is to cast our votes for Randy Howarth for Trustee and Charles Collins for Mayor, respectively. It’s a change 40 years in the making. The time is now to end costly, unnecessary expenditures that are draining our precious tax dollars and wasting our limited resources, while benefiting the lives of a select few. The escrow portion of my mortgage has increased three times in the last five years, largely due to increased local taxes. This rate of escalation is unsustainable and unacceptable. The appropiate response is to consider a consolidation of village and town services, which the prevailing majority in power has rejected. Randy Howarth and Charles Collins, in contrast, have the experience, the wisdom, and the will to bring Nassau into the 21st Century. Please give them your support on March 15th. Things can never improve unless each of us lends a hand. Paid advertisement ~Maxine Bogash- Nassau

NORTH GREENBUSH FINANCIAL REPORT SPEAKS FOR ITSELF Letter to the Editor: Last week, the North Greenbush Town Board received a report on the operation of the town comptroller’s office. The independent report detailed real concerns and problems over the past comptroller’s handling of town finances and management of certain town accounts. Indeed, the area that prompted the most concern was the revelation that he had opened a town bank account holding approximately $3 million that only he had access to. The past comptroller, who was not reappointed in 2009, but allowed to hold over in the position, also failed to perform necessary reconciliations of town accounts, did not computerize ledger entries or carry out other basic and needed steps. The independent report was commissioned by the Town Board because we were concerned regarding management of town finances. The report is likely to prompt further town action to ensure taxpayer money is being properly managed. Despite the serious problems described in the report, the former comptroller is attempting to confuse residents by personally attacking me. To blame me for the tardiness of his work is as ridiculous as his practice of balancing the Town’s checkbook annually. However, numbers do not lie and facts included in the independent report show that the Town Board made the right decision. While Supervisor Ashworth initially called our action “political” she later stated in a finance committee meeting that “she knew there were problems with the comptrollers office in November” and that “it was frustrating that he didn’t get his stuff done when he was suppose to”. Our actions regarding the former comptroller are in line with the work of Town Board members, including myself, Al Spain, Kelly Hoffman and Joe Bott, to reform town finances. We have done this by focusing on how every town tax dollar is spent and by managing town finances the way taxpayers handle their household budgets. Would you balance your household checkbook once per year? Our comptroller did! Political attacks are easy to make, but as board members we will let the results – reduced debt, stable taxes, improved finances and better fiscal management – speak for themselves. You may request a copy of the report by calling our Town Clerk at 283-4306 or by e-mail @ twnclerk@townofng.com ~ Lou Desso, North Greenbush Town Councilman Editors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion or endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for all intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of its contents.

In the Village of Nassau Open Mon-Sat • 766-2707 BECOME STRONG IN GOD The Stuyvesant and Nassau Reformed Churches will begin their Sunday worship in Lent with the story of Jesus in the wilderness and the topic of temptation. Matthew’s account of Jesus’ forty days being tempted by the devil (Mat 4:1-11) tells us that it is not the forces of evil, but the Holy Spirit that leads Jesus, and us, to experience being tempted by the devil. Matthew writes” Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted....” In knowing temptation is a part of the human condition, we all need to experience it, learn to resist it, and “Become Stronger in God.” In the sermon of that title, the Reverend Edward L. Van Kampen will point to the key of our overcoming temptation being God’s power to empower us. The Stuyvesant Reformed Church will begin worship at 9 a.m. in its sanctuary, where Church Street meets Route 9J, one half mile south of the only traffic (caution) light in the hamlet of Stuyvesant. Everyone is invited to worship at Stuyvesant Reformed Church. The Nassau Reformed Church begins worship at 11 a.m. in its chapel on the second level of its Church-School-Building at 43 Church Street (Route 20,) one half mile east of the only traffic light in the village. Sunday School meets at 11 a.m. and ends so parents can meet their children at 12 Noon, following worship. Everyone is welcome to worship at Nassau Reformed.

ODYSSEY OF THE MIND IS HERE AGAIN – BETTER THAN EVER! The Odyssey of the Mind tournament is here again and promises to be better than ever, according to Arlene Sampson, the tournament’s director from Questar III. This year the popular event features 71 teams, involving Rensselaer, Columbia and Greene counties, and will take place on March 12 at Rensselaer City Schools, 25 Van Rensselaer Drive, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. (snow date March 13). Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Students apply their imagination and ingenuity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. In addition to the all-day creative problem-solving taking place, Questar III has added three exciting opportunities for participants and audience members. The first is a community service project where adults and students can help “Stars for Our Troops,” a project of the local Ladies Auxiliary of Germania Hall of North Troy. The members cut embroidered stars from worn U.S. flags to send with a note to U.S. soldiers stationed around the world. Visitors are invited to bring used flags to donate. There will also be a fun art project ongoing throughout the day in which everyone who attends can add his or her thumbprint to a picture of the Odyssey of the Mind mascot, Omer the raccoon. Sponsors hope to show off this work of art at the awards ceremony at the end of the day. Lastly, a virtual pin design contest will invite everyone at the tournament to vote for one of the three top designs submitted earlier this year by students competing in Odyssey of the Mind. Because so many people are planning to attend, everyone is asked to plan ahead by arranging a carpool, allowing extra time to get there, or to park in satellite parking areas near the school including: Carmela’s Banquet House, 301 Washington Avenue; Doane Stuart School, 199 Washington Avenue; or the CDTA Park and Ride at Route 4. Shuttle buses will run every ten to 20 minutes all day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. (with these exceptions: 9 to 10 a.m., 12:20 to 1:20 p.m. and 3:10 to 4:10 p.m. when only one bus is running). For more information, visit www.questar.org.

NO FEE FOR INITIAL CONSULTATION EAST GREENBUSH EMPLOYEE INCENTIVES Letter to the Editor: I would like to present to my neighbors two incentives the Town pays to our employees. The first is a Sick Leave incentive. From the employee handbook: “Full-time employees will be entitled to a sick leave bonus of two hundred fifty ($250.00) for each quarter of the calendar year in which they do not use any sick leave...This Incentive is offered to encourage employees to save their sick leave.” The second is a longevity incentive. Longevity pay is given to eligible fulltime non-union employees as provided in the schedule found here: http://tinyurl.com/5rq9q7g Longevity pay is given to eligible union employees per the terms of their union contract. In 2010, 18 people received longevity pay totaling $59,399.60. This amount does not include longevity payments for hourly employees. The Town indicates: “longevity payments for hourly employees are included in their hourly rate and are not tracked separately.” For 2010 59 people received Sick Leave Incentive totaling $45,033.36. 27 people received sick leave for all 4 quarters, or a lump sum payment of $1,000. Supervisor Rick McCabe, whose base salary was $70,000 for 2010, made an additional $2,800 from the longevity incentive. For more info on these two incentives, please visit http://tinyurl.com/5vc6h76 ~Nathan Hans, Rensselaer Editors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion or endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for all intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of its contents.

IS MY DOG DANGEROUS? Both New York State and local law have restrictions on dangerous dogs. A dog that bites someone may be declared dangerous, but a dog that threatens or intimidates a person to the degree that a reasonable person feels that he is at risk of being bitten can also be declared dangerous. Tickets can be issued for local municipal violations. A court appearance will be necessary and fines may result. New York State has a dangerous dog hearing procedure that can result in a court appearance. If a dog is found to meet the criteria for a dangerous dog in New York State, the court may impose restrictions on how a dog is maintained as well as other serious penalties. Harboring a dangerous dog can result in lawsuits that can be very costly. It is important to maintain all dogs in a safe and secure manner to both protect the public and the dog. Dogs should never be allowed to run at large. What a dog is doing or what is happening to a dog when you are not there leaves too much risk for all concerned. Most dog bites to strangers occur as a person is entering the property either into the home or onto the property. If your dog barks at people, rushes at people or threatens in any way, this behavior can lead to more aggressive actions as time goes on. Electric fences work fine for some dogs, but are particularly dangerous when the dog, so confined, is exhibiting aggressive behavior. A stranger may be cautious when opening a fence gate, but if there is no such barrier he may find himself well into the dog’s property before he meets an aggressive dog. Every year there are bites to people in just such a scenario. How a dog acts with the family, people he knows, and other animals he is familiar with, is not indicative of the way he will behave in the presence of strangers. Many people are shocked when their dog is accused of aggressive or dangerous behavior, especially if they are not there to see it. Pets are members of our family and it is difficult sometimes to consider the fact that, beloved as they may be, we should still keep in mind that they are, in fact, animals. ~For questions, call Catherine Crawmer, Animal Control Officer 477-8230

RENSSELAER COUNTY PETS GO ONLINE Hearts Herd Animal Sanctuary, Buskirk and Adopt-A-Pet Clinic INC., Troy, has joined other animal welfare organizations in the area that list their homeless pets on Petfinder.com, the oldest and largest database of adoptable animals on the Internet. The site currently has over 3324,700 homeless pets listed, and it is updated continuously. More than 13,500 animal welfare organizations in the U.S., Canada, and other countries post their pets on the site. HeartsHerd Animal Sanctuary, Buskirk and Adopt-A-Pet Clinic INC., Troy pets may be viewed at http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/ NY1020.html. A potential adopter enters search criteria for the kind of pet he or she wants, and a list is returned that ranks the pets in proximity to the Zip code entered. Adoptions are handled by the animal placement group where the pet is housed, and each group has its own policies. Petfinder.com was created in early 1996 as a grassroots project by Jared and Betsy Saul to end the euthanasia of adoptable pets.

PET OWNERS DOING MORE for PET’S TEETH (NAPSA) Pet owners have become increasingly aware of the importance of pet oral health and its effect on whole-body health and well-being. While daily tooth-brushing is the gold standard in oral care for pets as it is for humans, less than 1 percent of dog owners are compliant.Instead, many turn to treats with dental benefits, known for being more enjoyable for pets and most convenient for owners.A new study shows that 77 percent of dog owners gave treats they believed to provide oral care benefits last year, with 30 percent increasing such treat giving. Yet up to 60 percent of them don’t realize that their dogs may have progressing oral disease. Part of the problem is lack of veterinary care. Also, most treats that claim to clean teeth lack the research to prove it.*Veterinary dentists only trust a fraction of treats to be effective at cleaning teeth and safely protecting them, says Dr. Jan Bellows, veterinary dentist, diplomat and incoming president of the American Veterinary Dental College. According to Dr. Bellows, it’s important for pet owners to understand which dental treats work effectively to eliminate plaque and tartar buildup and are safe for pet teeth. Some dental treats, especially real bones, are notorious for their low nutritional value and their hard textures, which can contribute to tooth fractures, Dr. Bellows says. Many consumers are accustomed to seeking out toothbrushes and toothpaste that carry the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval. And dental standards are equally as important for pets and their oral health.Fortunately, there’s a governing body that confirms if dental treats work, using third-party testing. The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) is similar in nature to the ADA but is applied to pet products. Through stringent research and review, the VOHC determines which products on the market are effective. Greenies¨ Canine Dental Chews was the first brand of dental treats to receive the seal for plaque and tartar control and has been a pioneer in dental treats that meet VOHC standards. Walk into any pet store and you will find dozens of treats that claim to clean teeth, Dr. Bellows says. While it’s easy to make teeth-cleaning claims, formulating a treat that significantly protects teeth is difficult. The VOHC seal is there to help veterinarians and pet owners recognize which products are proven to work. For more information about the Veterinary Oral Health Council, visit www.vohc.org. For further pet dental chews information, visit www.greenies.com.

A workshop for woodlot owners, The Future of Your Woods and Wildlife, will be held in Sand Lake, NY on Saturday, March 19. Private lands on the Plateau contribute to the overall ecological health of the larger landscape, through stewardship that supports forest regeneration, wildlife populations and movement, and high-quality forests and wetlands. The workshop will offer landowners information and tools needed to understand and address some of the issues facing woodland owners today. Topics will include forest-wildlife management and ecology, how to sell sawtimber, ownership transfer of forest lands, uncommon and at-risk wildlife of the plateau, how to get started on forest stewardship plans, and conservation programs for forest owners. The event is cohosted by the Rensselaer Plateau Alliance, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Greene and Rensselaer Counties, and sponsored by the NYS DEC’s Hudson River Estuary Program and the Cornell Biodiversity Program Work Team. The workshop will be held at the Zion’s United Christ Church of Taborton, 741 Taborton Rd., from 8:30am to 12:15pm, followed by lunch and an optional woods walk that will end at 2pm. The workshop fee is $15. See http://www.dnr.cornell.edu/ext/pwt/bio/ for registration and information. Contact Kristi Sullivan at Cornell Cooperative Extension with questions: (607) 255-5508.
