EGCSD HOSTS BULLYING PREVENTION PROGRAM FOR SCHOOL COMMUNITY The East Greenbush Central School District will host Barbara Coloroso, an internationally recognized speaker, consultant and author on parenting and bullying. Mrs. Coloroso’s visit is intended to raise awareness of the issues surrounding bullying and help educate parents, students and staff on ways they can prevent bullying in our schools and community. A community forum, featuring Mrs. Coloroso, will be held on Thursday, March 24th, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., in the Columbia High School Auditorium (located on Luther Road in East Greenbush). During the school day on the 24th, Mrs. Coloroso will also present her anti-bullying message to the District’s schools. Additionally, at a Professional Development program scheduled for March 25th, she will instruct the District’s staff on identifying the signs and symptoms of bullying and provide guidance on the prevention of bullying in school. Mrs. Coloroso’s presentations is part of the District’s ongoing effort to provide a safe school environment that promotes dignity and respect, and is free from bullying, intimidation and harassment. In 2010 the Board of Education adopted a policy on bullying prevention and made it a District goal to provide programs and initiatives that deter bullying and promote tolerance and respect. Each of the seven schools within the District have programs in place to address bullying, and antibullying efforts. These topics have also been a focus of the District’s professional development. The Dignity for All Students Act, a New York State law that goes into effect in 2012, requires that all school districts develop procedures which create an environment free of discrimination and harassment and establish guidelines for training school personnel in these matters. Barbara Coloroso is an international bestselling author and, for the past 38 years, she has been recognized as an international speaker and consultant on parenting, teaching, school discipline, positive school climate, bullying, grieving, nonviolent conflict resolution and restorative justice. She has appeared on Oprah, CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN and NPR and has been featured in the New York Times, Time, U.S. News & World Report, Newsweek, and other national and international publications. Her presentations will be paid for through grant money, professional development funds, and fundraising efforts coordinated by the East Greenbush Central School District’s Board of Education.

ANIMAL CRUELTY COALITION: THE FACTS Letter to the Editor: The Animal Cruelty Task Force was created in 2007 to “provide the police with a list of individuals who could be called upon to assist with investigations.” Regarding the concerns that coalition members were identifying themselves as “investigators,” the Legislature approved such designation in resolution G-287-09. The role and actions of the task force have never once exceeded the mission we were granted. The Legislature cannot point to any incident of harassment to the farming community. We have consistently operated professionally, with respect for our Charter, and New York law. The task force requested on several occasions a personal meeting with Mr. Ken Herrington, a legislator, who drafted the resolution rescinding our power, to ascertain and address his concerns. Co-founder and renowned retired New York State Trooper Susan McDonough wrote Mr. Herrington a letter reiterating our purpose and activities. We never received a response. With the exception of egregious cases, our first approach was always to educate rather than arrest. There have been several animal cruelty cases in Rensselaer County where we have been asked to comment on the application of the law, most recently the Bobby Clow case, where Clow shot a pet dog with a 44 magnum out of anger and revenge and was not prosecuted under Buster’s Law. Even the author of Buster’s Law, Assemblyman Jim Tedisco, was appalled at this misapplication of the law. Had we not met with the District Attorney’s office in the wake of the Skye Feathers case, where a pet horse was brutally stabbed to death, that case too would have been incorrectly prosecuted as a misdemeanor. Animal cruelty is a crime, and yes, an uncomfortable topic for many. But it is still a crime and needs to be addressed by individuals who thoroughly understand the law and how it should be applied consistent with legislative intent. It is located in the Agriculture and Markets Law rather than the Penal Code; consequently police are often not adequately trained in enforcing this law. The Department of Agriculture and Markets does not assist in animal cruelty investigations, and never has, contrary to the perception of at least one legislator who advised a concerned citizen that Ag. and Mkts. could assist police, now that the task force is defunct. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said “our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” We are proud of the ethical, above-board, hard work we have done. A host of family members, friends and government officials joined Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino (standing, right of center) and members of the Honor-A-Deceased Veteran Committee in commemorating the life and service of Navy Veteran John Melvin Hall. The late John Melvin Hall, who served aboard the USS Constellation and the USS Pittsburgh during more than two years in the United States Navy during World War II, was recently recognized by Rensselaer County’s Honor-A-Deceased Veteran committee and County officials. Hall was involved in a pair of historical nautical and naval rescue missions during his service aboard the USS Pittsburgh. The first rescue took place shortly after March 14, 1945 when his ship dashed to rescue the carrier USS Franklin and her crew while fighting against air attacks from Japanese land-based aircraft and eventually towing the seriously-damaged ship to safety. Then, on June 5, 1945, the USS Pittsburgh weathered violent typhoons southeast of the Ryukyu Islands, and, while no lives were lost, Hall sustained the scars from rescuing fellow sailors in chemical-soaked, burning waters, following a time when his ship was hit with waves large enough to destroy the port catapult carrying the float plane. For his service, Hall was authorized to receive the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with One Bronze Service Star, along with the World War II Victory Medal, Hall received his honorable discharge from the United States Navy on December 21, 1945. “Like so many of his generation John Hall took it upon himself to defend our nation and the rights we hold so dear by joining in the war effort as a member of the United States Navy where he bravely served,” said Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino.
EMPTY BOWLS On Sunday, April 3, 2011, an Empty Bowls event to benefit the Heifer Project will be held at the Church of the Covenant United Methodist Church, Rte 43, near the intersection with Old Route 66 in Averill Park, NY. The Heifer Project provides animals for needy families and villages all over the world. The animals provide food and/or clothing for the families. The date and time is Sunday, April 3, 2011, from 12:00 2:00 pm. There will be a “Freewill Offering” for your bowl, soup and bread. You may bring your own bowl or you can use the church bowls. The soup will be provided by Averill Park, Sand Lake and West Sand Lake area restaurants. Barbara & Paul Wiley from the Heifer Project will be at Church of the Covenant during Empty Bowls to talk informally about the Heifer Project, and will also have information about the Heifer Project.

Take their dog away from them and give them a hefty fine. They deserve it. Everybody on the block says so. After all, there are laws! You are the animal control officer. Go get ‘em. Click! They hang up. The call is made from a blocked number. How common is this type of communication? Very common. Messages such as this are also sent by email and left on the answering machine. They almost always mention that there are laws. That much is correct. There are laws. One important law says that there must be a witness to a violation of the law before a ticket is issued and the subsequent court appearance. If a dog is barking and keeping you up all night, running at large, destroying your property or attempting to attack your family, and you are a witness to it there is a legal procedure in place to address the problem. This is as it should be. Without it, false accusations and vendetta-based complaints would fill the courts. With no witness to substantiate the complaint the court would promptly dismiss the claim. A waste of time for all concerned! If you have a problem with your neighbor, it may be a good idea to talk to your neighbor first. If no remedy can be found, call your municipal animal control officer for information on other options. Give the officer your name and contact information and then tell the truth without embellishment. Fred Hellmuth of East Greenbush receives a Commendation Certificate from Councilwoman Sue Mangold With a smile a mile wide, Fred Hellmuth of East Greenbush accepted a Certificate of Recognition at the East Greenbush Town B oard Meeting on March 16th. Council woman Sue Mangold introduced a resolution commending Mr. Hellmuth on “walking his Three Thousandth Mile” which met with unanimous approval from her associates. Since October 2002, Fred Hellmuth has walked a mile every day, and his unbroken pattern reached the impressive milestone on March 9th. “This is a significant personal achievement, said Ms. Mangold, but more than that it is a wonderful example for all of us.” There are so many programs now encouraging healthy physical activity for children as well as seniors, and here we have a neighbor who is showing us how. Who wouldn’t benefit from a little time out in the fresh air, to clear our heads and calm our souls?, she continued. Fred’s steady dedication to his daily trek shows that it is doable and effective. At the age of 83, Fred Hellmuth continues to be active in business as the owner of Higgins Forms and Systems.

STORM WATER UPDATE (Introduction to Stormwater Pollution Prevention) Water pollution is generally thought of coming from spills, factories and catastrophic events. Unfortunately, a lot of water pollution, especially that is found in streams, lakes and rivers, comes from actions that we all do regularly. Much of the pollution now found in streams, lakes and rivers comes from runoff from rain and snowmelt. The rain flows along roofs, streets, sidewalks and yards until it runs into a catch basin or ditch and then flows through the stormwater system to the nearest downhill body of water. All that time, it is picking up dirt, bacteria and chemicals, which become water pollution. When the dirt and chemicals hit a stream, they don’t do anything dramatic like kill off the fish population – at least not right away. The stream can get silted in and cause flooding. The chemicals can cause algae to grow wild and turn the water or underlying rocks green. The bacteria can cause illness in people and animals drinking or swimming in the water. This is the first of a series that will help residents learn how they can help keep their waters clean, and explain programs that their local governments are doing to that end. ~The Rensselaer County MS4 Communities

The evening will celebrate the achievements of the District’s Alumni, its students, and the school community. This annual event will raise funds for enrichment grants to be awarded to the District’s students, kindergarten through grade twelve. Since 1985, the Foundation has awarded over 3,000 college and summer enrichment grants. Over the last several years, students have received grants to pursue experiences in music, theater, art, computer technology, NASA programs, leadership workshops, athletic camps, literacy arts, mathematics and social sciences. The Education Foundation also sponsors the Columbia High School Alumni Hall of Fame; a program which recognizes and honors the accomplishments of Columbia High School graduates. The 2011 inductees will be honored at the Gala. They are: Scott Salvador (Class of 1984), Phil Agcaoili (Class of 1989), and Derek Farley (Class of 2004). Tickets for the annual Gala are $30. This includes cocktails, dinner and a silent raffle. Entertainment will be provided by the performing groups of Columbia High School. DEACON QUINN TO LEAD STATIONS OF THE CROSS IN NEW LEBANON: On Friday, March 25th, the Seniors’ Ministry of Immaculate Conception/St. Joseph Parish, New Lebanon, will host their regular monthly get-together at 11:30AM, starting in the main church at 732 US Route 20, New Lebanon. Deacon Peter Quinn will lead the traditional Lenten prayer known as “Stations of the Cross,” and all in the community are invited to attend. Because the weather caused a cancellation of the February program, stylist Deb McLaughlin returns this month to provide information about hair care as it is affected by the aging process. She will speak about cut, color and permanent wave techniques, as well as some of the effects of medication on the structure and growth of hair. Deb is the owner of Deb’s Shear Perfection salon in New Lebanon and has been a stylist for more than 20 years. “DUTCH BARNS - PRESERVATION AND ADAPTIVE REUSE” Greenbush Historical Society will sponsor Keith Cramer from the Dutch Barn Preservation Society who will present an overview and history of the New World Dutch Barn on Sunday, March 27th, at 2PM. The year 2011 marks the 25th anniversary of some successful Adaptive Reuse Projects of area early Dutch barns. One in Coeymans has been relocated and converted to a carpenter’s shop; another from Hoosick has been relocated and converted to a residence. Other early barns have been recently adapted to use as museum space and a studio. The efficient, heavy timber structural system adapted from Northern European precedents reflects the practical construction and engineering skills of the predominately Dutch immigrants who settled this area. The program is appropriately being held at “Pat’s Barn,” Rensselaer Technology Park, 110 Defreest Drive. The barn, now conference center, was built using ninety percent of the original barn located on the site. Construction was a 3-year project completed in September, 2009. RENSS. CO. DAIRY PRINCESS COMMITTEE IS LOOKING FOR THEIR 2011 PRINCESS Would you like to promote milk in Rensselaer County to both farm and non-farm audiences? This is a great opportunity to work within the dairy industry. My reign has allowed me to share with thousands of children and adults the importance of our dairy farmers and dairy products, not only in Rensselaer County, but throughout the State. I’ve had the opportunity to attend farm meetings and promote the 3-Every Day of Dairy message through weekly newspaper articles and visits to schools, fairs, festivals, community events, parades, senior centers, legislative meetings and so much more. Not only has this experience allowed me to grow as a person, it has given me many wonderful new friends. To be eligible for the program, you must be a young woman between the ages of 16 and 24, never been married and a resident of Rensselaer County. You should also be affiliated with the dairy industry (member of a dairy family, own your own cattle, the child of someone employed by a dairy-related industry, or sponsored by a local farm, etc.). It was disturbing to learn that the Rensselaer County Animal Protection Coalition has been disbanded by the county legislature. This is of particular concern as we are working with others in Washington County, writing a plan for our own anticruelty task force. This plan is being modeled after the Rensselaer County Task Force. Having spent a great deal of time studying the design, procedures, and actions of this task force, we feel compelled to weigh in on recent events. The Legislature “became concerned about coalition members identifying themselves as ‘investigators’ when looking into animal cruelty cases.” We find this puzzling as the Legislature approved this designation (Resolution G-287-09). The members of the Coalition are intelligent and knowledgeable professionals, committed to following the law. They have operated within the framework granted to them by the Legislature. They have educated police officers in recognizing and responding to animal cruelty cases. They have assisted the police with animal cruelty investigations and in doing so they have helped reduce the burden placed on law enforcement. Above all they have educated the public in recognizing and reporting animal cruelty. The general public greatly supports anti-cruelty initiatives. Anyone who feels that cruelty toward animals does not deserve the attention it is receiving here, needs only to look at the documentation of animal cruelty as a “bridge crime” to cruelty toward human beings. Our government leaders need to act against cruelty to animals and stop this progression in its initial stages. The Coalition has been highly effective in doing just that. District Attorney McNally has said that an “advisory group” will be created to fill the role the coalition was initially created to serve. In our opinion, the Coalition has served in this role exactly as it was created. It appears that the Legislature is more interested in advice than action. Perhaps the citizens of Rensselaer County should begin the search for political candidates who value action. We are confident that the Coalition will endure, will be even more effective, and will remain a model for the rest of us. ~Linda J. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that destroys motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. It is a fatal disease in which people lose their ability to walk, talk, eat and breathe on their own. Although described as rare or uncommon, almost everyone knows a family affected by this disease. On Thursday, March 31st, Dr. Steve Perrin, CEO and Chief Scientific Officer at the ALS Therapy Development Institute, is hosting a free community seminar entitled “ALS Research 101” from 7pm to 9pm at Mallozzi’s Belvedere Hotel, 1930 Curry Road, Schenectady. Topics to be covered include the biology of ALS, stages in the development of a new drug, the latest research and overcoming road blocks to a cure. A question and answer period will follow. The ALS Therapy Development Institute in Cambridge Massachusetts is the world’s largest ALS research center and the only nonprofit biotechnology company focused solely on development of effective treatments that slow, stop and reverse the effects of ALS as soon as possible. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? Letter to the Editor: On March 10, 2011, The Advertiser published one of the most disgusting letters that I ever read! Not the words used but what they expressed. The letter was from one of our county legislators assailing one of our county Judges. The charge of how could he think for himself when the Democratic Party had already told him how to think. Mr. Hammond, are we to believe that it is only the democrats committee that can think and that we should all step in line as we are told? It did not work for Hitler and for sure it will not work in America! How dare you, too think that it is un-American to think for ones self! The Judge was elected by the people, he was not appointed by a committee to serve an elite group! But for all person before his court! Does not the hypocrite oath mean anything to you? You should stop and reflect on the trend of the Nov 2010 election. The vote went against the democrats only because they held more seats. The vote was against men like you. The people are fed up with this scenario. Men holding positions in both town and county, School board members with spouses employed in that district. Getting their benefits and salary package from the people they sleep with. But that’s ok because the parties know best what the people need, so don’t worry about what they think their needs are. The East Greenbush Fire Company is hosting a series of Fish & Chips Fundraiser Dinners beginning on Friday, March 25th. We will also hold the event on Friday, April 1st and 8th. The event will feature a Fish Fry Dinner with Fries and Cole Slaw for $8.50, Clam Roll Dinner with Fries and Cole Slaw for $7.50 and a Dog Dinner with 2 Hot Dogs, Fries and Cole Slaw for $6.50. We will also be serving New England and Manhattan Clam Chowder for $3.50 per bowl, Sweet Potato Fries $4 and Cheddar Fries for $3. FRIDAY FISH FRY APOLOGY Dear Neighbors and Friends, We wish to apologize to those of you who were turned away or experienced a long delay waiting for your meal at last week’s Friday Fish Fry(March 18). We sincerely appreciate your support and believe you deserve an explanation of what happened. The week before (March 11) we were very close to selling out, so we ordered 50% more fish for last week (March 18). Over the years, we have figured out what size the fish portions should be in order to allow us to deliver a reasonably priced meal in a timely fashion. We informed our supplier of the portion size, and up until last week, they had followed our instructions. Unfortunately, many of the fillets we received on the 18th were larger than they should be, but not large enough for us to cut and still provide a fair portion. Early in the evening, we decided to use them as they were delivered and hope that we had enough to serve all our customers. These larger fillets required longer cooking time and allowed for fewer fish per batch thus causing longer delays for those waiting for their meals. Because there were fewer servings per pound, we also ran out of fish. This resulted in many of our customers being told we would not be able to serve them. We deeply regret this. As you may be aware, we serve only fresh haddock that we bread ourselves. We cut all of our french fries and our coleslaw is freshly made. Our members make the chowder from scratch and the chicken breasts are prepared in our own kitchen. We work very hard to provide you with an enjoyable meal while you spend an evening with friends. We are working with our supplier to assure that this doesn’t happen again. We regret any inconvenience this incident may have caused you and hope that you will continue to join us in the future. ~The members of the South Schodack Fire Company

SIMPLE SUPPER IN SUPPORT OF THE NASSAU RESOURCE CENTER During this time of recession and job losses, the Nassau Resource Center Food Pantry has found it difficult to keep their shelves supplied. The food pantry at the Resource Center has found that more of our neighbors need to call on it, as other neighbors, who once were able to give, have found that they are unable to do as much as they once could. The Nassau Reformed Church will be holding a SIMPLE SUPPER, on Saturday, March 26th, from 4:30PM to 6:30PM in support of the Nassau Resource Center. A variety of soups, chili’s, stews and breads will be offered. For a minimum donation of $7, the Simple Supper patrons will be able to refill their bowls and sample as many as they’d like. By Morgan McEvilly Hello all Averill Park Warrior fans! It has been a beautiful start to spring with great weather and clear skies. Friday, March 18th, your Lady Warriors Basketball team took on Garden City in the semi-finals and had the fans on the edge of their seats the entire game. Bridget Carney made the gamewinning basket as time ran out to give the final seed to Averill Park over Garden City. The end score being 43-41; your Warriors worked very hard. The next day the Lady Warriors played in the finals at HVCC against Peekskill. Although we fell short, the final score 58-35, our girls did a fantastic job. Claire Everett with 10 points was the lead scorer for the final game of the season. Nice work girls! The spring season is starting and the first scrimmage for the girl’s lacrosse team is tomorrow at Schenectady High School. The draw will be at 4:15, so make sure you are there to cheer on the girls. Senior Andrew Fasoldt is this week’s Scholar Athlete. Andrew has been playing second base for Averill Park’s varsity baseball team since he has been a sophomore. This fall Andrew played his 3rd year on varsity golf. Andrew’s favorite part of playing baseball is “the team camaraderie which is a nice change from the individual game of golf.” Throughout his high school career, Andrew has been able to maintain a 94 grade point average. Currently Andrew is taking calculus, physics, economics, participation in government, writer’s workshop, and engineering design and development. In his free time, Andrew enjoys hanging out with his friends, snowmobiling, and playing basketball. Next year Andrew is planning on going to Siena for business. After he gets his bachelor’s degree, Fasoldt wishes to continue on to law school. Andrew would like to thank his parents, siblings, grandparents, and girlfriend for helping him become the person he is today.

AVERILL PARK Youth Wrestling The Averill Park youth wrestlers participated in the Dawg Duels in Cobleskill on Saturday, 3/12/ 11: Chance LaScala, Peter Flick, Sean Malenfant, Andrew Panzanaro, Spencer Butterfield, Max Tempel, Ruthann Flick, Dalton Maxfield, Jon Mainville, Nick George, Donnie Nalley, Dominick Pasquariello, Aaron Lindeman, Alyssa Lindeman, Brett LaScala, Colton Butterfield and Gavin Ackner. A dual meet is run with the wrestlers competing as a team rather then as an individual. The wrestlers did a great job for their first dual meet competition, placing 3rd and brought home a nice big trophy. Their final team scores were as follows: AP 64 to Ravena 13—AP 38 to Barn Brawlers 39—AP 36 to Cobleskill 48—AP 60 to Burnt Hills 24.

AVERILL PARK ROAD RUNNERS YOUTH CLUB IS NOW TAKING REGISTRATIONS The Averill Park Road Runners Youth Club is now taking registrations for the 2011 Track & Field Season. The club is open to anyone ages 7-14 who likes to run, jump, throw and most of all, have FUN! (You do not have to be a resident of the Averill Park School District.) Kids can choose from many events including sprints, distance running, hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot put, turbo javelin and discus. Practices will be held Monday & Thursday evenings at the Averill Park High School, with several meets throughout the season. The season will run from April 25th through June and finish with the Junior Olympics. Registration is now available on our website at www.aproadrunners.com. The registration fee is only $40, plus uniform if needed. A $15.00 late fee will be added on April 1st. There is a $10 sibling discount. Membership in the United States Track and Field Association ($20) is also required to participate and provides insurance coverage. 2011 BRUNSWICK BASEBALL LEAGUE – SPRING BREAK BASEBALL CAMP The Brunswick Baseball League will be hosting two – 8 hr baseball camps during the April School Break. The camps will be conducted on Monday, April 18th, 8am-4pm for players ages 12-15 and Thursday, April 21st, 8am-4pm for players 16 and up. The camps will be held at the Brunswick Sports Complex on State Rte 2. The cost of the camp will be $20 for each player, which will include lunch, snack and a T-shirt. Players will be put thru various fielding/throwing drills to evaluate their skill levels then participate in group hitting sessions. During the course of the sessions, verbal evaluations and suggestions on areas of improvement will be given by local HS coaches and BBL managers. During the afternoon, session players will be divided into teams and will participate in scrimmages. Players will need to bring a glove, cleats and drinks. MAT AND CHAIR YOGA Yoga is a stress reliever. It improves balance, flexibility and strength. When combined with light weights, where appropriate, it can be even more beneficial. We will start with gentle floor yoga for those who find themselves able (please bring a mat) 9:00 – 9:30, followed by an hour of chair stretching and strengthening 9:30 – 10:30 (please bring two cans of soup). Josh Cummings, of Schodack, recently competed at the US Speedskating Shorttrack Nationals in Wausau, Wisconsin. The three day event started with the 1500 meter race, followed by the 500 meter, 1000 meter and the 3000 meter. Josh brought home gold in the 1500, 500 and a silver medal in the 3000, giving him enough points to win the overall championship and the national title. Josh is a member of the Saratoga Winter Club, Capital District Speedskating Club and the Northern New York Skating Association. Josh is coached by Paul Marchese. Josh is a senior at Columbia High School, where he is a high honors student and a member of the National Honor Society. After graduation in June, Josh will be moving to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he will be training full time and attending the University of Utah. Josh is the son of Dan and Mary Ann Cummings.

GREENBUSH SOCCER ACCEPTING REGISTRATIONS East Greenbush Recreational Youth Soccer is accepting registrations for the spring recreational league. The league is open to participants ages 4 to 12. It is a non-competitive, fun soccer experience for local youth. Spring season will run from April 30 through June 18. We are proud to now offer a 4 year-old program. This program will consist of a 25 minute skills sessions and then a 25-minute game. All teams are coached by volunteers and parents are encouraged to coach. Head coaches are currently offered the opportunity for ONE child to play at no cost. The fees for this season are $95 for first child and $65 for each additional child. There is a $2 processing fee for each family, please register all family members at the same time so as not to incur more than one processing fee. Players are provided with a team shirt and are required to have shin guards and appropriate footwear depending on age level. Players aged 4-8 must wear sneakers and all others can wear soccer cleats. Fees include a $20 fundraising fee. Each family will have the opportunity to sell a set of tickets to recoup their $20. Deadline for registration is March 25, 2011. MOSES WINS EAST ZONE ATHLETE of the YEAR IN SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING Kayla Moses, a senior at Columbia High School, won the East Zone Athlete of the Year award this past weekend at the East Zone Senior Championships in Synchronized Swimming, held March 11, 12, and 13th at Union College. Kayla has been swimming with the Capital District YMCA Sculpins synchronized swim team for over a decade. She has earned numerous medals at Association, Regional, Zone, and National level swim meets. At the East Zone Championships, attended by over 160 competitors from 7 states, Kayla placed fifth in figures, fourth in her solo routine, fourth in duets, and fourth in team. She also placed on the East Zone All Star Team, which allows her to swim on a combo team at the U.S. Opens in Synchronized Swimming, to be held this summer in Honolulu, Hawaii. This month she flies to Clermont, FL, for U.S. Junior Nationals, where she has qualified to swim her solo. In December of 2010 she attended the Junior Nationals training camp in Indianapolis, IN, to prepare her for Phase Two of the Junior National team trials to be held this May. Kayla intends to swim at the collegiate level after she graduates from high school.

The worldwide, human response to the devastation caused by the earthquake and resulting incredibly devastating tsunamis in Japan, witness how Jesus has empowered us with what we need in dealing with suffering in the world. The Stuyvesant Reformed Church will begin worship at 9 a.m. in its sanctuary, where Church Street meets Route 9J, one half mile south of the only traffic (caution) light in the hamlet of Stuyvesant. “SHOWER OF STOLES” “Shower of Stoles” on Display at First United Methodist Church, 1 Gilligan Road, E. Greenbush on Sunday, March 27th, from 11:003:00. This sample of 75 liturgical stoles, of over 1,000 stoles, is representative of the lives of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people of faith. These religious leaders have served in almost 40 denominations and faith traditions. They come from six countries and three continents. This collection of stoles celebrates the gifts of LGBT persons who serve God, while lifting up those who have been excluded from service because of their sexual orientation. The collection tours around the country and we are proud to be able to display part of it to the community. They are here to help tell what it means to be a Reconciling Congregation. CLERK CONNOLLY PROTECTS DESSO FROM ETHICS COMPLAINT Letter to the Editor: Recently I detailed an ethics complaint filed against Councilman Desso for leaking confidential documents to the news media obtained as a result of his official position. The leak damaged my professional standing while “justifying” Desso’s firing of me and appointment of a politically connected Comptroller. On March 14th, Town Clerk Connolly used her official position to circumvent the duly appointed Ethics Board from exercising their responsibility to review that complaint. Incredibly, she returned it to me without recording it as an official public document, informing me that I had to send it to the home address of an Ethics Board member. Her action violated official responsibilities as the custodian of all public records in town, preventing the Ethics Board from receiving official communication sent Certified Mail, so they may perform their duties via the Town Ethics Law. Clerk Connolly’s abuse of her official position obstructed lawful governmental administration imposed on the Ethics Board. She acted to protect Councilman Desso from any action this Board might take. Imagine if Clerk Connolly were to take similar actions with official mail sent to the Planning, or Zoning Boards, IDA or any Board, Commission or Agency of Town government? No citizen should be expected to send official town correspondence to the home address of any town official. Not only is it improper and intrusive, but circumvents the creation of public records in connection with official business transmitted to town government. Her action would prevent access to public records under the Public Officers Law, Freedom of Information Act. I returned the complaint to the Clerk demanding she immediately notify the Ethics Board of the complaint which by law must be filed as a Public Record in the Town Clerk’s Office. I also asked the Town Board act to ensure Ms. Connolly does not pull a stunt like this again and that any complaints previously filed in her office have been provided to the Ethics Board. This may explain why this Board has never met once in its 15 months of existence. The Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department will hold a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, March 26th, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located on Grange Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5PM and close at 6PM. Play begins at 6:15 sharp. A Free Buffet will be served at the first break and refreshments will be available. No advance registration is required, and a donation of $35.00 per player will be accepted. Players can make an additional $10.00 donation at the door for 1,000 extra chips. EG APPLIANCE AMNESTY WEEK Appliance Amnesty is a program where residents of East Greenbush may participate in having unwanted metal appliances removed from the curbside, free of charge. Monday, March 28th to Friday, April 1st has been set aside for this purpose. Please schedule your appointment by calling the Public Works Office at 477-6103. The following guidelines have been set. 1. Residents must make an appointment to have their appliances picked-up. 2. Appliances should be placed at curbside the night before the scheduled pick-up. 3. If for any reason you are unable to keep your appointment, please call the Department of Public Works to cancel or reschedule.
