THIS WINTER, WE’RE THINKING SUNSHINE! Celebrate The Fresh Air Fund’s 137th Summer Fresh Air summers are filled with children running barefoot through the grass, gazing at star-filled skies or swimming for the first time. Join host families in and around the Albany area for our 137th summer and open your heart and home to a Fresh Air child! Each summer, over 4,000 inner-city children visit suburban, rural and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program. “The Fresh Air Fund enriches everybody’s lives; you don’t have to entertain the child, just let him or her be a part of your life,” says Nikki, a Fresh Air host. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.7 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from six to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children on first-time visits are six to 12 years old and stay for one or two weeks. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. Over 65 percent of all children are reinvited to stay with their host families, year after year. For more information on hosting a Fresh Air child this summer, please contact Tenniel Hansen at 518-451-9611 or The Fresh Air Fund at 800-367-0003. SUSTAINABLE DAIRY FARMING Today we hear more and more about different dairy farming practices such as sustainable dairy farming. Sustainable dairy farming is using farming techniques that ensure the safety and protect the land, environment, surrounding communities, and animals. This form of farming produces wholesome and nutritious foods while protecting the environment for years to come for future generations. Dairy Farmers are one of the best environmental stewards; they take a great deal of pride in caring for the land, air, and water. Working with government agencies and industry experts is one of the great opportunities farmers have to protect their land. Framers do a variety of practices to ensure the quality of their land such as crop rotation, minimum tillage, rotation grazing systems, and manure management. Cows are the most important part of the dairy farm and are very valuable to the farmer. Dairy farmers give their cows the best care possible by providing them with big stalls or beds to lay and sleep in along with plenty of food and water at all times. The farmer’s most important job is to ensure the health and wellbeing of the cattle. Farmers work to have well-cared for cows that produce pure and nutritious milk. Dairy products are one of the safest and regulated foods that you can buy as a consumer. Clean equipment, refrigerated storage tanks, quick processing time, and numerous safety producers ensure the quality of milk. The wholesome milk that consumers find in the stores is a very safe product along with being nutrient packed. ~ Courtney Luskin, Dairy Princess

Most people are aware of heart disease and its potentially devastating effects. Many people may not know that the term “heart disease” is a blanket term used to describe several health problems related to the heart. According to the World Health Organization, ischemic heart disease, which is characterized by a reduced blood supply to the heart, is the leading cause of death across the globe. Though many conditions are characterized as ischemic heart disease, many others are not, and the WHO notes that other heart conditions, including stroke, are also among the top 10 most deadly diseases in the world. The following is a rundown of some of the more common heart conditions, many of which can be prevented if men and women make the right lifestyle choices. Angina Angina occurs when a person has chest pain or discomfort around their heart because the muscle is not getting enough oxygen-rich blood. Angina can be a byproduct of elevated levels of stress or overexertion and may even be caused by clogged arteries. All cases of angina are not the same. Stable angina is the most common form, and usually follows a pattern that is common among patients. Unstable angina is less predictable, while variant angina, the rarest form of the condition, occurs while a person is at rest. Rest and medicine are at the root of treating angina, which is more easily treated once its cause has been determined. Atherosclerosis Atherosclerosis is characterized by the buildup of fatty materials in the arterial walls. This fatty material can harden over time,

restricting blood flow and resulting in calcium deposits. Daily exercise and a healthy diet void of high-fat, highcholesterol foods are two ways to prevent or treat atherosclerosis. Cardiac Arrest Cardiac arrest is a culmination of several heart conditions, including angina and atherosclerosis. Also known as a heart attack, cardiac arrest occurs when blood and oxygen are unable to reach the heart. Chest discomfort; discomfort in other areas of the upper body, including the arms, back, neck or jaw; shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort; and nausea or lightheadedness may all be indicators that a person is going into cardiac arrest.

Hypertension Also known as high blood pressure, hypertension is a relatively common heart condition. Nearly every adult has likely received a blood pressure reading at one point in his life. That reading measures the systolic pressure, which is the pressure created when the heart beats, and the diastolic pressure, which is the pressure in the heart when it is at rest. A blood pressure above 120 over 80 is considered high, and that high figure might be caused by salt and water levels in the body and the condition of the body’s kidneys, nervous system and blood vessels, as well as the body’s hormone levels. Treating hypertension is relatively simple, as a doctor will typically recommend some dietary changes and may even prescribe medication for those patients with especially high blood pressure. Stroke Stroke occurs when the blood supply to any part of the brain is interrupted. Potentially deadly, stroke can cause paralysis as well. Trouble speaking, loss of coordination and trouble moving limbs may be indicative of stroke, which is considered a medical emergency that requires immediate medical help. The longer a person goes between the onset of a stroke and seeking treatment often determines the severity of the consequences.

POESTENKILL HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING AND PROGRAM Walter Fleming of Ballston Lake will present a program on THE 19th CENTURY TINSMITH on Tuesday, February 26, at the Poestenkill Historical Society’s February meeting. Walter has an extensive collection of original period tools and hand operated machines which he uses to restore early tinware and also to make copies of early American pieces, such as candle boxes, lanterns, teapots, chandeliers and folk art pieces. Walter has lectured and demonstrated his trade for Museums and Historical Societies in New York, New England and Virginia including the American Folk Art Museum. Tinsmiths served an important function in colonial times, but by the end of the 19th century, many items originally made, one at a time by tinsmith were mass-produced; Sheets of expensive tinplate would similary be replaced by galvanized steel, stainless steel, aluminum, or even plastic. The Poestenkill Historical Society will meet Tuesday, Feb. 26th, at 7:00PM in the Poestenkill Town Hall (RT 351). Refreshments will be served. Come hear Mr. Fleming talk about this early trade. For directions, call Patricia at 518-283-5223.
Coming this spring, the Rensselaer County Housing Resources (RCHR), will again have grant funding available to assist local residents with obtaining and maintaining their homes. RCHR has been awarded funds under three government programs, providing grant monies which can be used for downpayment assistance for first-time homebuyers, home rehabilitation projects, and home modifications to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. Under the Access to Home Program, income-eligible homeowners and renters in Rensselaer County may be able to receive grant funding to make enhancements to their homes in order to increase accessibility. The Small Cities grant program can assist income-eligible firsttime home buyers with grants to be used for down payment and/or closing costs at the time of purchase. “We are pleased to again receive funding for these important programs that assist individuals in acquiring and maintaining their homes.” Said TRIP Executive Director Patrick Madden. These programs can be a lifeline for individuals who are striving to maintain their independence. “Income-eligible Rensselaer County residents outside the City of Troy may apply for these grant opportunities. Applicants need to be income eligible and current on their mortgage, property taxes and homeowners insurance at the time of application in order to qualify. For more information about these grants or other homeowner programs, visit RCHR’s website at www.triponline.org/rural or call TRIP NeighborWorks® HomeOwnership Center at (518) 690-0020.
