www.wojeskico.com AVERILL PARK SCHOOL NEWS FROM SUPERINTENDENT JIM HOFFMAN Dear Averill Park Community Members: We have begun the difficult process of preparing a financial plan for the 20132014 school year. Several steps will take place culminating with the public vote on May 21, 2013. Our first discussion was on Tuesday, February 12, where I presented a “historical overview” of the budget over the past 10 years. My goal was to provide a better understanding of how this situation, regarding staff and program reductions, came to pass. I would encourage you to view the presentation by visiting our website under the Budget Corner. I would like to share this information with you personally, in your own neighborhood. I am offering my time for an evening with your friends and neighbors if you are interested in hosting. Also, I would welcome the opportunity to speak with any local organizations and would be honored to attend one of your meetings. Please contact me at 674-7066 to make arrangements. Our next meeting is on February 26. A group of community residents created a long-range strategic plan for the district, called AP2020. They will present their work to the Board of Education for review and approval. I encourage you to join us. For a review of the committee’s work, please visit the district website under Averill Park 2020. Finally, I am happy to report we have been awarded a grant from the US Department of Environmental Protection. The purpose of the grant is to take older, higher polluting buses off the road and replace them with newer vehicles. Thanks to the voter approval of the bus referendum in October, we were able to participate in the grant. The district will receive $100,000 to scrap four of our large buses. The money must be used to purchase new vehicles. We will purchase two smaller buses reducing future bus needs. Thank you again for the support and good wishes I continue to receive. I look forward to continuing to do my best to serve the students and community. Please visit the district website at: http://www.averillpark. k12.ny.us/ and Facebook page for information and other current happenings. ~ Jim Hoffman, Superintendent of Schools

The Partners of Wojeski & Company: Dave Wojeski, Matt Lindemann, Angela Colvin and Tom O’Donnell Right now, like the vast majority of Americans, you are probably sorting through piles of papers and, hopefully, getting together all of the paperwork needed to prepare your 2012 tax return. Up to this date, a great many taxpayers are discovering that the IRS is not ready to process their returns. Here’s why – the dysfunctional Congress passed so many new tax laws changes or extenders in January that the IRS has not had sufficient time to revise all of the affected forms and reprogram their computers to reflect all of these changes. The vast majority of changes have now been implemented and we are encouraging taxpayers to come in and complete their 2012 taxes and discuss strategies to reduce taxes for 2013 and beyond. Some year-end tax tips never seem to go out of style; others result from these recent changes to the tax laws. We can help you by reviewing many of the new tax provisions that directly impact your taxes currently and working to develop your future tax and financial goals. Our goal is to make you aware of the 2012 tax changes and alert you to tax planning opportunities for 2013. Important considerations for 2012 and 2013 include: • Income and capital gain planning based on new tax rates and the new Medicare surtax • Deduction for sales tax • Expensing equipment purchases and bonus depreciation choices • Expanded college tuition credits and deductions • Direct contribution of IRA funds to charity • Estate and gift tax planning considerations • Home energy saving tax breaks • Planning to minimize the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) • Retirement savings options and minimum distribution requirements In addition to tax planning and compliance, we also provide financial, estate and retirement planning services in the same location. The firm is conveniently located on Route 4 just off of I-90 in East Greenbush and is listed by the Capital District Business Review as the tenth largest CPA firm in the Capital District. Wojeski & Company, CPAs, P.C. is a local firm with over 30 professionals. All of our people are highly trained on business and individual tax laws and are available year round to answer your questions and assist you in achieving your financial goals. At Wojeski & Company we look at every client’s unique situation to see what advantages and opportunities exist which may have been overlooked. We can be contacted at 477-1102 with extended business hours for the tax filing season.

ASSEMBLYMAN STEVE McLAUGHLIN VISITS ALGONQUIN MIDDLE SCHOOL
Town offices were busy this month and there is much to report. I am pleased to announce that the Town is receiving a $7,500 grant from the Justice Court Assistance Program to upgrade our facilities. The Town has applied for two additional grants – one to help digitize town documents and records and another to help fund new Town signage for our gateways and hamlets. We continue to work toward extension of natural gas service and provision of public water. Here are some Town Board highlights for the month: • Board Designated Accounts – Recognizing the need for long-term planning and proper administration of funds, the Board established three accounts – Highway Equipment Replacement- $150,000, Professional Services-$70,000 and Economic Development & Planning-$30,000. • Appointments – The Board unanimously appointed Mr. Bob Moore as Deputy Historian and Dr. Nancy Perry as a member of the Planning Board. • Liability Insurance – In December, the Town requested proposals from insurance companies and received four bids. After all the proposals were duly reviewed, Rose & Kiernan was found to best meet the Town’s needs at the lowest cost. I am pleased to report that the Town has saved over $17,000. • Vacant/Abandoned Structures – The Town Board unanimously supported the passage of State legislation that would make it mandatory for lending institutions to provide municipalities with contact information for responsible parties regarding vacant structures and require good faith in obtaining a foreclosure. • Summerfest 2013 – John Brownrigg and Stuart Nippes, members of the Kiwanis Club of Sand Lake, announced that Summerfest 2013 will be held on June 14th – 16th and will be honoring our community emergency responders. The next Town Board Workshop is on Wednesday, February 27th, at 7:30 pm; and the next Town Board Meeting is on March 13th at 7:30 pm at the Sand Lake Town Hall. Please come and participate.

QUESTION: You have been explaining how meditation can provide us tools to improve our health and happiness. What other tools does meditation offer? R. Vandenberg, Averill Park, NY ANSWER: The next two health tools we receive through meditation are Will Power and Easy-Gentle Yoga. Most of us possess the IQ to make sound decisions, but because we habitually disregard the promptings of our own conscience, our reserves of will power (WQ) are dangerously low. Without sufficient will power to exercise detachment and discrimination, we suffer tension, stress, anxiety and pain. Meditation changes that. Each time we meditate and direct our onepointed focus of attention on the mantra, we train the mind to disregard distractions. In effect, we are building our will power. In meditation, each time competing thoughts, images or sounds come into our awareness, we willingly honor, witness and surrender the distraction and return our attention back to the mantra. This process is similar to lifting weights. When we regularly lift weights, we strengthen the body’s muscles. In meditation, as we mindfully observe and let go of the distractions, we strengthen the mental muscles of our will power, so we can have the strength to make healthy choices. In Easy-Gentle Yoga, the body and its subtle energy become the focus of our one-pointed attention. When the body assumes a specific posture, we welcome, witness, honor and surrender all distractions (just like in seated meditation) and then redirect our attention back to the body and its energy. At a later time, we can revisit those relevant thoughts, desires and emotions that had come forward during our yoga practice. This process reveals great insights into how our vital energy can be better used. As our gentle-yoga practice deepens, and we focus increasingly on what appears in the moment (rather than on our preconceptions), we begin to realize that our body’s stiffness is actually physical evidence of mental conditioning. Armed with that insight, we become more free, flexible and willing to release our old, unhelpful habits and to experience the reward of total, skillful and healthy engagement in every kind of relationship. The meditation curriculum at the American Meditation Institute is accredited by the American Medical Association, Albany Medical College and the N.Y.S. Nurses Association. It is also endorsed by nationally recognized physicians Dr. Oz, Dean Ornish MD and Bernie Siegel MD.

SCHODACK CSD SUPERINTENDENT ASKS FOR COMMUNITY’S HELP Dear Schodack CSD Community, I need your help to help your community’s children. We are finishing the first draft of next year’s budget and I can’t tell you how concerned we are about what it would mean for opportunities for our children. A fourth year of state aid cuts would mean a fourth year of cuts to our programs for students. But you have the power to help change that. Please help us advocate for your community’s children by attending a very important 90-minute advocacy meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 6:30 p.m. in the High School auditorium. Over the next month, lawmakers in Albany will finalize next year’s budget. It is critical your representatives hear from you about the impact Governor Cuomo’s budget proposal would have on your schools. We believe this could make a significant difference. Your elected representatives are engaged like never before on education due to recent regional advocacy efforts. They need to hear from residents that cuts to school aid need to stop, school aid must be distributed more fairly, and costly mandates need to be reformed. On Feb. 28, we will provide a quick overview of our budget and the underlying reasons why we have to cut deeper into programs each year. We will then show you how to become an advocate for your schools. Advocacy can be as little as writing an e-mail to your representative, telling them what you love about your school. Or you can make an appointment to visit your representative in Albany to ask them questions. There are many ways to help. The more your representatives know about your schools, the more invested they will be in helping our community’s children. Please consider attending this important meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 6:30 p.m. in the High School auditorium. ~ Sincerely, Bob Horan, Superintendent of Schodack CSD

The PBA is committed to promoting this goal in order to obtain such a vital resource and bolster our infrastructure. • Also noteworthy is the pending transfer of a parcel of land from the Averill Park School District to the town of Poestenkill, and how it may best be utilized by town residents. • Additionally we are seeking input regarding the feasibility of establishing a weekly Farmer’s Market and Craft Fair to be held in Poestenkill. athlete OF THE WEEK ELAINA RYAN ~MOST DEDICATED~ by: Lauren Navratil
by Claire Everett Last week of sports was very unconventional. With the boys and girls basketball teams only playing one game, and wrestling over, there were not many Averill Park competitions to report. However, even though there were not that many organized meets taking place at Averill Park, it doesn’t mean that many Averill Park Warriors were not hard at work. Rudy Winkler, a senior at Averill Park High School, is well known in the community as one of the best hammer/weight throwers in the nation. This week, Rudy competed in the New England USATF (USA Track and Field Association) meet. Rudy threw 78' with the 25lb weight, and 61' using the 35lb weight. This was Rudy’s personal record and he took home gold in both the High School and Men’s Division. Congratulations Rudy! Another Averill Park athlete, who is making a name for herself is freshman Speed Skater Katy Toth. Katy just competed in the Empire State Winter Games. There, Katy dominated in the scholastic women’s 500 meter, the scholastic women’s 800 meter, the scholastic women’s 1000 meter and the scholastic women’s 3,200 meter skate races. Katy took home seven gold medals! An addition to Katy’s story that makes it especially remarkable is the fact that she is in the process of recovering from a broken foot. Congratulations Katy on not only your awards, but also your ability to overcome such adversity! The Indoor Track Team competed in the Division II Sectional Championships. Averill Park had many notable performances including Eden Zietler, who took 6th in the 55 Meter Dash, the girls 4x400 Team, which took 3rd; the girls 4x800, which took 5th; from Amanda Harrington and Mikayla Holmes who earned 5th and 6th in the girls pole vault; Elaina Ryan who placed 2nd in the girls long jump; Wesley Clayton who earned 3rd and Andrew Tario who took 2nd in the 1600 meter run. Drew Ryan took 5th in the boy’s 55 meter hurdles, the 4x400 team which took 2nd, and Jon Rodgers who placed 2nd in the boys shot put. Finally, congratulations to the first place finishers: Mike Hayes in the boy’s triple jump, Drew Ryan in boys pole vault, and the 4x800 team of Andrew Tario, Matt Miller, Wesley Clayton and Chris Shaw. The State Qualifiers, which were scheduled for Sunday, February 17th, have been moved to Sunday, February 24th. The two AP basketball teams both played Mohonasen for the second time this year on Monday. The girl’s team played Mohon away, and brought home another win, 58-42. Great games were played by Lauren VanRoy, who scored 15 points; and Kelly Donnelly and Caraline Woods, who each scored 12. The boy’s team hosted Mohon for their Senior Night. The Warriors wanted the win bad, and fought until the very end to defend and support their seniors. Unfortunately, the game ended in a devastating loss, Mohon-47, AP-45. Congratulations to seniors Dan VanRoy, Matt LaBounty, Lucas Ziegler and Corey Giuliano for a great regular season. Good luck in Sectionals! Congratulations to all the individual athletes this week, and the team and school they represent. I will let you know about the athletes that progress farther into sectionals next week. If you have questions or comments, feel free to contact me at claireeeverett11@gmail.com.

It’s been a long winter season for our sports here at APHS, but we’re not done yet. Sectionals are right around the corner and we’re all excited to see what our athletes have to bring to the table. You may have caught a glimpse of Elaina Ryan sprinting through the finish line at an indoor track meet. Ryan began running track as a freshman when her older sister got her into it. For indoor, she runs the 300 meter, the 4x400 meter, the 4x200 meter and also does long jump. In the spring, for outdoor, she runs the 200, 400 and 800 meter races and also continues to do long jump. Elaina likes to prepare for the season by doing the workouts that she would normally do in practice. Then, during the season, she attends practice five days a week and also likes to workout once over the weekend. According to Ryan, being a dedicated athlete means that each day you are working hard and putting in the extra effort to become a better athlete. Elaina loves the family feel she gets from the team. They’re all constantly cheering each other on and supporting one another. The support from her teammates really helps Elaina, because like many athletes, she admits that she feels very nervous before a race. In track, you aren’t just up against other runners, you are up against the clock as well. Each race is a chance to beat your PR (Personal Record). Ryan loves the feeling of beating her PR, because it really shows how much her hard work has paid off. Aside from track, Elaina is busy with school work and preparing for college. This year she is taking Forensics, Trigonometry, Sculpture, Science-Fiction Literature, Participation in Government and Economics. In the future, she plans to attend a four year school to major in Communications and also continue running track. There have been many people who have inspired Elaina to be the person she is today, but the most effective was her older sister. Elaina has always looked up to her sister as a role model and learned many valuable lessons from her. “I would like to thank my family and my coaches for all the support they have given me over the years. If it wasn’t for them, I would not be the person or runner I am today,” says Ryan. We wish Elaina the best of luck in the remainder of her season and her last year of High School!

MAKE DONATIONS GROW DURING MARCH & APRIL AT DOORS OF HOPE It’s always nice when we make a donation to have value added to our gift. That’s just what happens during the months of March and April to gifts of food and money that are donated to Doors of Hope located at 4352 NY Hwy 150, West Sand Lake. Every spring the Feinstein Foundation divides $1 million among hunger fighting organizations across the nation. In that time span, all donated food items are weighed and money gifts recorded and reported to the foundation. Perhaps you, your church, organization, business, or school would like to join this effort during March and April and have your donations increase in value. It’s a good time to give! ~ Naomi Boel (D.O.H. board member)

Rensselaer County Clerk Frank J. Merola is pleased to inform all Rensselaer County pistol permit holders that they can request to keep their pistol permit information confidential under the newly enacted SAFE act effective February 15, 2013. “On February 15, the State Police will have what is known as the “opt-out form available on their website for those permit holders who desire to keep their information confidential. This form allows the holder to request the County licensing authority to keep their information confidential, thus preventing the record from being made available to FOIL requests. Mr. Merola said, “We will also have a supply of forms available at my office for those in person applicants to pick up at their leisure and we will upload the form onto our website at www.rensco.com for online retrieval. Those permit holders who wish to have these forms mailed or e-mailed may contact us at this web address www.pistolopt out@rensco.com. The SAFE act amends the former law which allowed individuals, organizations or any interested party to request the entire pistol database, including names and addresses of license holders, under the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL). Concerns over safety issues, such as criminals targeting homes based on this information, revealing the names and addresses of law enforcement or those who have orders of protection for security reasons prompted County Clerks to lobby the legislature to modify the law under the SAFE act to allow holders to keep their records private. Under the SAFE act, current license holders have 120 days from February 15, 2013 to file this form with the NYS Police.

ALL ARE WELCOME AT ST. MICHAEL’S With the marking of Ash Wednesday, the Christian Community has entered a period of preparation for our observance of Holy Week and Easter Sunday. Easter is central to the tenets of our Faith, with its focus on the reality of Resurrection, redemption, and rebirth. Some local Congregations have announced a homecoming theme in their Lenten observance, which reflects these concepts, and we at St Michael the Archangel Parish join in “welcoming home all who wish to join us. Following the leadership and example of our Parish Life Director, Sister Katherine Arseneau csj, we remain mindful of the diversity of need and interest in those around us, and welcome all who enter our door. We invite any who have been away from church for a while, to return and join us in this season of preparation and renewal. St Michael’s has beautiful, participatory liturgies and activities planned for Lent and Holy Week. This includes a covered dish communal meal following our celebration of The Lord’s Last Supper on Holy Thursday evening, 3/28. Please access our website www.stmichaeltroy.com for a listing of Lenten opportunities. If you have questions, please call Sister Kate at 283-6110. You will be welcomed at any and all of our services.
