ALL IN CHRIST On the Fifth Sunday in Lent, March 17, 2013, the Stuyvesant and Nassau Reformed Churches will turn to Philippians 3:4b-14 and focus on Paul’s turning from boasting about his religious heritage to giving his “All In Christ.” It is in these verses that Paul stresses the Christian life as a matter of living into God’s promised future, of leaving something behind, foregoing something, so as to engage in a far better life. In the sermon titled, “All In Christ,” the Reverend Edward L. Van Kampen will address two basic and critical questions related to knowing Christ. First, is being religious the way to know Christ? Second, how can we get to know Christ in our lives today? Join us and come to more fully understand the answers to these questions. For certain, it will strengthen your faith. The Stuyvesant Reformed Church begins worship at 9 a.m. in its sanctuary at the corner of Route 9J and Church St., in the hamlet of Stuyvesant. The Nassau Reformed Church begins worship at 11 a.m. in its chapel on the second level of its Church-School-Building, 43 Church Street (Route 20) in Nassau.

SISTER MARY CATHERINE BARRON TO CELEBRATE GOLDEN JUBILEE Knowing what you are going to do when you grow up is something people struggle with for years. La Salle Institute’s Sister Mary Catherine Barron dealt with that issue for only a few hours. She was given a homework assignment in the 3rd grade to write about what she wanted to be when she was older. By the end of the evening, she had her answer. On March 16, St. Joseph’s Provincial House, located in Latham, will honor Barron and others who are celebrating milestone years as a nun. In fact, Sister Mary Catherine and the 10 other women celebrating their 50th in the order will be the youngest group there. There will be groups being honored up until their 75th year. Sister Mary Catherine came to La Salle in the fall of 2001. She has taught English at LSI just as she has for all of the 46 years she has been at the head of the classroom. Although she has plenty of energy left, she would like to soon “start putting some of that time and energy towards writing and see what other doors open.”

WHOSE DOG IS IT ANYWAY? Letter to the Editor: ‘First he hits my dog with his car, leaves me with a stack of vet bills and now he is suing me! My dog is gone. The dog control officer should go get my dog and bring him back to me. After all, he was picked up only a block away from my house. My neighbor is complaining barking. After all, dogs bark. I got a ticket for my dog running loose. Why do I have to go to court? Every dog control officer gets similar laments from dog owners who seem to forget that with dog ownership comes responsibility. State and local law determines what the owner’s responsibilities are much to the surprise of many dog owners. Dog owners are responsible for the actions, welfare and whereabouts of their own dog at all times. The dog owner is responsible for damage to a motor vehicle that may hit the dog. A dog must have a current license and proof of it must be affixed to the collar. A dog without such is deemed “unidentified” by State Law and must be transported to the town kennel. No dog can legally leave the town holding kennel without proof of a valid license. Municipalities have laws about barking dogs. Local law restricts dogs to the owner’s direct control. Tickets may be written for the first violation of the law. Fines may be levied and subsequent violations may result in escalating fines. ~ Catherine Crawmer, Animal Control Officer: 477-8230

COLUMBIA HIGH SCHOOL TO PRESENT LES MISERABLES…. Columbia Players will present the musical LES MISERABLES at Columbia High School in East Greenbush on Friday, March 15th; and Saturday, March 16th, at 7pm. Tickets are just $10 for students/seniors, and $12 for all others and can be purchased at the door before each show. This epic story recounts the struggle against adversity in 19th century France. Imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread, petty thief Jean Valjean is released from his 19-year term and not only becomes an honest man, but the mayor of a prosperous town and a loving adoptive father - violating his parole in the process. The relentless Inspector Javert, who makes a decent life for Valjean impossible, consequently pursues him. Only years later, after Valjean proves his mettle during a bloody student uprising and saves the life of a young man hopelessly in love with Valjean’s adopted daughter, does the ex-convict finally feel fully redeemed. Fresh from the big screen and the Oscar awards, don’t miss your chance to see a very talented cast perform this stage version of Les Mis.

EARLY AMERICAN DECORATION The Greenbush Historical Society will present an informative program on EARLY AMERICAN DECORATION Sunday, March 17, 2 PM, at the East Greenbush Community Library. Society Board member and speaker, Lynn Richards, will discuss disciplines of Early American Decoration, including country painting, stenciling on tin and wood, theorem painting, pontypool painting, reverse painting on glass, clock dials and Victorian flower painting. Examples of these early American crafts will be described and exhibited. From as early as prehistoric cave drawings, to the Victorian age of elaborately decorated homes, people have wanted to decorate the objects surrounding them for the pleasure it brings to the eye and feelings of well-being and contentment. While styles and ways to decorate change over time, people never lose the urge to decorate. Join the Greenbush Historical Society on March 17 and be inspired by early American decoration and crafts that are a part of our national heritage and tradition. You may even acquire a deeper interest and desire to put your own artistic expression to work on a new hobby. Everyone is welcome and refreshments will be provided. Society publications will be available for sale. Your support and membership in the Greenbush Historical Society are appreciated and membership information will also be available.

LEGISLATURE RECORDS SAVINGS OF $115,000 FOR 2012 The Rensselaer County Legislature recorded a savings of just over $115,000 thanks to various efficiencies employed during 2012, Chairman of the Legislature Martin Reid announced. The savings will be assigned to a special Taxpayer Protection Fund established by the Legislature to help protect taxpayers and safeguard needed county services. The transfer of the savings to the fund is expected to take place at the March meeting. The Taxpayer Protection Fund has been employed by the Legislature to reduce the amount of a tax increase during the 2013 budget and to reduce a tax increase during the 2012. The Legislature utilized $129,000 for the 2013 budget and $167,000 for the 2012 budget. “The savings show the County Legislature continues to do more with less, and produce a savings that help reduce taxes and protect taxpayers and needed services,” said Reid. The savings of $115,000 in 2012 follows a savings of $141,267 in 2011, $129,200 in 2010 and $160,000 in 2009. The savings came about largely from a reduction in personnel, delays on filling vacancies and fewer purchases during 2012. A switch to electronic tablets also helped reduce cost for paper, personnel and other supplies. Thanks to the savings, the Legislature operated in 2012 on a budget of $1.25 million, which is similar to the cost of operating the Legislature during the early 1990s. The Legislature is responsible for conducting legislative duties, research, constituent service, administration of the county insurance policy, various communications with the public and other duties. In addition, competitive rebidding of the county insurance policy netted a savings of $900,000 over three years on the current county insurance contract. The county today pays less for insurance than the county did in the early 1990s.

athlete OF THE WEEK DREW RYAN ~SCHOLAR ATHLETE by: Lauren Navratil
by Claire Everett Averill Park’s Warriors, other than one athlete, have entered the hiatus between Winter and Spring sports. With most of AP either recovering from or preparing for a season, there is not much to report. There is only one story. The New York State Indoor Track Championships were held this week, few athletes attend and the ability to participate is an honor within itself. Averill Park was represented by Andrew Tario in the 3200 Meter Run. Andrew placed 26th among the best contestants in New York State. Congratulations to Tario for competing so far into post season competition, and good luck in future endeavors! Girl’s lacrosse and softball, boy’s baseball and tennis, and track and field are all playing in the weeks to come, so stay tuned to hear about their first competitions. As always, sport schedules can be found at www.averillpark.k12.ny.us/athletics/sportsschedules. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact me at claireevereett11@gmail.com.

This Week’s scholar athlete had a lot to say about his sport and how he managed to have so much success over the years. Drew Ryan, a senior at Averill Park High School, is one of our most dedicated, hard-working track members. Drew has been doing indoor and outdoor track all four years of high school, making this upcoming outdoor season his eighth in total. He has been training in pole vault and hurdles for all four years. He has placed second in sectionals three times for pole vault; and this past indoor season, he placed fifth in sectionals for hurdles. During pre-season, it is difficult to work on skills because of the equipment needed, which is why Drew focuses on building strength and stamina by running and lifting weights. Then, during the season, Ryan is able to focus on perfecting his main events for the meets. Drew has found that hurdles can be a bit more stressful at meets, because you only get once chance; as opposed to the three you get for pole vault. However, he knows that his hard work will pay off in the end. Drew’s favorite part about track is the relationships you make with people that you otherwise wouldn’t have met. The team has become a second family to him. Like other scholar athletes, Ryan finds a way to balance his athletic career with his academic one. “Being a scholar athlete means you have your priorities in order. It shows that you know how far you need to apply yourself at your school work to maintain a good GPA and that you are dedicated to your team enough to stand out as an individual athlete,” a quote from Drew himself. This year Ryan is taking Advanced Placement Biology, Participation in Government, Economics, English and a Calculus course through Hudson Valley Community College. In the fall, he would like to attend Sacred Heart in Fairfield, Connecticut. While attending, he would be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in accounting and then a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A) with a focus in accounting over five years. He also plans to compete on their divison 1 track team. Drew has found a lot of inspiration from friends and coaches over the years, but none have affected him more than his mother. He takes after her in that they both have a competitive drive, and they fully dedicate themselves to whatever they do because they like things done to the best of their abilities. Ryan would like to thank Coach Aldi and Coach Abbatiello for all the time and effort they have dedicated to enhancing his skill level and helping him see his full potential. Coach Abbatiello always says, “Average is just as close to the bottom as it is to the top”, which is why Ryan never has and never will settle for average. We wish Drew and the rest of the Averill Park Outdoor track team the best of luck in their season.

Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. QUESTION: What are the final two meditation tools that can improve our health and happiness? C. Pace, E. Greenbush, NY ANSWER: Good Company and Contemplation are the final tools we gain by meditating. Remember when Mom or Dad warned us against associating with certain kids. Meditation provides the same loving advice: “The company you keep is stronger than your will.” It’s similar to what occurs when we play tennis or golf. When we’re matched against someone a little better than us, we tend to play up to their level. When we play with someone a little worse than us, we tend to play down to their level. A certain amount of experimentation is necessary in childhood. Sometimes a child may choose to touch the stove to find out if the burners are hot. But as an adult, we do not have to touch every burner on every stove. In determining what company to keep in our lives and in our minds, mediators use the conscience to discriminate, rather than relying on personal preferences alone. With practice, mediators can become decisive, skillful, fearless and healthy. The practice of contemplation is similar to the army’s practice of “After Action Review.” Once we recognize which of our past actions have conflicted with our inner wisdom, we can be prepared the next time we face similar habits on the battlefield of life. The knowledge gathered through contemplation helps us make inspired decisions that transform challenges into opportunities. For contemplation, choose a time and place free from the demands of everyday responsibilities. By sitting in a quiet, comfortable space and reviewing your thoughts, words and actions every day, you learn what is to be done and what is not to be done. As George Bernard Shaw wrote, “The philosopher is Nature’s pilot. And there you have our difference: To be in hell is to drift; to be in heaven is to steer.” But to steer a rewarding and healthy course requires appropriate tools. “If you have the proper tool,” auto mechanic Kenny Tremont of Brookside Garage once told me, “every job is easier.” I know today that the “Ten Meditation Tools” are the proper tools because they have never let me down. Because the meditation tools of Mantra, Budgeting Time, Diaphragmatic Breathing, One-Pointed Attention, Detachment, Discrimination, Will Power, Easy-Gentle Yoga, Good Company and Contemplation have worked so well for me, I believe they can transform your life as they have my own. The meditation curriculum at the American Meditation Institute is accredited by the American Medical Association, Albany Medical College and the N.Y.S. Nurses Association. It is also endorsed by nationally recognized physicians Dr. Oz, Dean Ornish MD and Bernie Siegel MD.

FISH FRY DINNER
The family of Kristopher NIchols would like to express our most heartfelt appreciation for all the support extended to Kris and his family throughout his three year battle with cancer. Your thoughts and prayers uplifted Kris and gave him much needed courage and strength. We truly appreciate the efforts of those families who started a scholarship fund in Kris’ name. Through your efforts, not only will college bound students benefit, but Kris’ memory will continue for years to come. A special thank you to Jack and George Rifenburg, who treated Kris more as a family member than an employee. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for the support and loyalty you extended to Kris and Shelley throughout his illness.
