QUESTION: Can you suggest a quick and reliable way to reduce stress? B. Higgins, Brunswick, NY ANSWER: One of the quickest ways to reduce stress is to regulate the breath. The breath is considered the physical manifestation of the mind. Although we cannot intellectually will the mind to calm down, we can create a serene, contented mind by consciously regulating the breath. When our breath is full and even, without jerks, pauses or sounds, our minds become calm. Through your own personal experience you may already know that the rhythm, rate and capacity of your breathing changes instantly in reaction to your thoughts, desires and emotions. When you are tense or surprised, you may hold your breath. When you are stressed, the breath may become rapid or shallow. When you are happy and content, the breath reflects that state of mind with its fullness and ease. Most yogic breathing exercises should be practiced in a regular seated meditation posture with your head, neck and trunk straight. Once you have established a comfortable and steady posture, you may notice one or more of the following five breathing irregularities that can negatively affect your well being. These are: 1. shallowness of breath; 2. jerks in the breath; 3. noisy breathing; 4. extended pauses between inhalation and exhalation, and 5. breathing through the mouth. When you learn diaphragmatic breathing from a qualified meditation teacher, the breath can flow freely, smoothly and silently through the nostrils without any jerks, pauses or sounds, and the mind can experience a state of joyful and calm stillness. This mental stillness frees the mind to make conscious, discriminating lifestyle choices that reduce stress, boost the immune system, and enhance physical energy and mental creativity. In the process of properly regulating the breath, however, you should never extend the breath beyond your comfortable capacity by inhaling or exhaling as much air as possible. With continued practice, the breath’s capacity will increase on its own, but it should not be rushed. Rather, learn to turn your conscious attention toward establishing a gentle, full and even diaphragmatic breath. The goal of the science of breath is to re-establish the body’s natural respiratory pattern that we had as babies––not by breathing from the upper chest, which is an unhealthy habit, but rather, by consciously employing the diaphragm, one of the body’s strongest muscles, in your breathing process. The meditation curriculum at the American Meditation Institute is accredited by the American Medical Association, Albany Medical College and the American Nurses Association. It is also endorsed by nationally recognized physicians Dr. Oz, Dean Ornish MD and Bernie Siegel MD.

SEAMAN RECRUIT MASSE COMPLETES TRAINING Navy Seaman Recruit Ryan A. Masse, son of Monique L. and Raymond L. Masse of Averill Park, N. Y., recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Masse completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations”. This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. “Battle Stations” is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly ‘’Navy’’ flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor. Masse is a 2012 graduate of Averill Park High School of Averill Park, N. Y.

athlete OF THE WEEK ABBY FISCHER ~MOST DEDICATED~ by: Lauren Navratil

by Riley Ludwig Hello Averill Park! I’m Riley Ludwig, and I’m covering one last time for AP Sports Chief Claire Everett. All of our teams are well into their seasons, and the Warriors had another packed week of meets and matches. Our softball and baseball teams both played three games this week, beginning with a home opener on Monday, 4/15, against the Bethlehem Eagles. The game was close for both teams and the girls managed to pull off an important first win with a score of 3-2. Sophomore McKenzie Bump’s clutch hit put the Warriors on top. The boys, unfortunately, fell short, 5-4. Both teams were successful on Wednesday, 4/17, against Saratoga. The softball team won 62, with great pitching by junior Brittany Meka and sophomore Caraline Wood. The boys won without allowing any runs to be scored, with a final score of 4-0 and great pitching by junior Tyler Childrose. On Friday, 4/19, the teams traveled to Burnt Hills. The softball team got their third win of the season with a final score of 4-3, with a big hit by junior Mackenzie Nitz. The boys fell short, however, with a final score of 10-0. Both teams will continue to play multiple games a week and will face Guilderland on Friday, 4/26, in Guilderland. Next up is the lacrosse team, which had a busy week as well. The girls took on Saratoga at home on Tuesday, 4/16. Our Warriors battled hard, but unfortunately, lost 8-2. The girls then played at Burnt Hills and the score was much closer than before. However, the girls fell short by one with a final score of 10-9. Goals were scored by senior Morgan Lionarons and sophomore Caitlin O’Shea. The girls will host Guilderland on Friday, 4/26, and I wish them the best of luck! Our track and field teams each had multiple meets. The girls’ team traveled to Niskayuna on Wednesday, 4/17, to face Niskayuna and Mohonasen. The girls came out on top at the meet, with spectacular performances all around. Senior Elaina Ryan won the 800-meter event and senior Eden Zeitler won both the 100-meter and the 200-meter events. Sophomore Lauren VanRoy PR’d in the high jump with a jump of 4’10". Congratulations girls! The boys hosted Nisky and Mohon on Tuesday, 4/16. It was rainy and miserable, but the boys still had multiple successes from upperclassmen. Junior Wesley Clayton won the 400-meter event. Senior Jonathan Rogers won discus and senior Andrew Tario won the two mile race. Congrats again to all teams this week for their effort! Claire will be back next week for the scoop on sports, but feel free to email me with any questions at reludwig512@gmail.com.

Abby Fischer is a senior at Averill Park high school who has been dominating the volleyball court for years. She began playing back in seventh grade, because some of her family members who also played got her into it. She played on the junior varsity team as a freshman and then played on the varsity team the next three years. Abby plays a ton of volleyball outside of school however. Currently, she is playing for a club team, which she also plays for in the winter. Since Fischer plays almost year round, she only has the summer to spend running a few days a week to stay in tip-top shape. Abby played setter up until her junior year, but now her main position is an outside hitter. Her favorite part of the game is how much fun the competition can be. “I love to be challenged, and this is a sport where you are always given the opportunity to be challenged,” says the athlete. Games for Fischer are full of intense moments that will be gone in a flash, which is why she gives it her all 100% of the time. According to Abby, volleyball is a game of strategy. It is full of quick thinking and movements, so every second counts. “Never let the ball hit the floor without a body hitting the floor,” says Fischer. This is one athlete who knows dedication like no other. To Abby, being a dedicated athlete means that you show up to every single practice, and you never quit, even when you are having an off day. Fischer also believes that being a dedicated athlete means you show up to practice not only for yourself, but for your teammates and coach as well. Abby has been most inspired by her mom and cousin, Emily. They’ve always been at every game, coaching and pushing her to succeed every step of the way. Abby would like to thank both of them as well as all of her past coaches for helping her to improve in so many ways. Aside from constantly perfecting her technique with a volleyball, Fischer keeps up with her schoolwork as well. This year she is taking Statistics, Economics, Participation in Government, Chic Lit (Women’s literature), Philosophy and Chemistry. In the Fall, she plans to attend Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) to study liberal arts. She will continue to play volleyball while attending HVCC. We wish Abby the best of luck in her future!

STEPHENTOWN VOLUNTEER FIRE FIGHTER RECRUITING DAY On April 27, 2013, volunteer fire departments across New York will open their truck bays and doors to local residents as part of the annual RecruitNY campaign to increase the number of volunteer firefighters and emergency medical personnel statewide. Started two years ago, RecruitNY is part of a coordinated effort to boost membership in volunteer fire departments. As part of RecruitNY, the Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department will hold a recruitment drive at our fire station on Saturday, April 27, 2013, from 10:00 to 2:00. The event will allow the fire department a chance to highlight the duties and rewards that come with being a volunteer firefighter. Every member of the Stephentown department is a volunteer. There are no paid members. Filling the ranks with volunteers keeps taxes low for the entire community. Small towns have historically been community minded, with neighbor helping neighbor. Modern life puts a strain on that concept. Joining the fire department is an excellent way to integrate back into the community-family ideal.

JOGGING JUNIORS 4H CLUB NEWS Hi! We are the Jogging Juniors 4H Club from Rensselaer County. Our 2012- 2013 year so far has been busy. At our Christmas party, we rode horses at our club’s barn and had lots of fun! Some club members got together and went tubing during their February break. Also in February, we had a farrier clinic where we learned lots of different facts about how we can take care of our horses hooves. In March, we organized a food booth for the Horse Bowl at Tamarac High School for the judges and participants. Members that served food were able to watch the Horse Bowl competition. One of our members, Erin Goodermote, participated in the Horse Bowl. We have discussed plans to raise money to help our club and our 4H community. We also plan to participate in various community service projects during the year. We can’t wait for the show season to start when we ride in Gymkhanas, Club Shows, the Schaghticoke Fair and other youth shows. ~ Submitted by, Maddia Reiter

RECRUITMENT OPEN HOUSE TO BE HELD AT WEST SAND LAKE FIREHOUSE The West Sand Lake Fire Department will open its doors to teach the community about what it takes to be a volunteer firefighter, as part of the third annual RecruitNY statewide initiative. Over the last several years, it has been very tough for many fire departments throughout New York State to recruit and retain volunteers for a variety of reasons. The West Sand Lake Fire Department needs to bolster its emergency responder numbers, so it can continue to provide the optimum level of protection for its residents. As part of RecruitNY, on Sunday, April 28, between 12 noon and 3 PM, the West Sand Lake Fire Department located at 3697 NY43 will join volunteer fire departments all across the state at their respective firehouses for a unified recruitment drive, as part of National Volunteer Week 2013. Not only will RecruitNY be an opportunity to highlight the duties and rewards that come with being a volunteer firefighter, it will also raise public awareness about the need for volunteers. Throughout the day, the West Sand Lake Fire Department will conduct tours of the station and firefighter apparatus, allow visitors to try on firefighter gear, and provide community drill activities and stations throughout the firehouse for visitors. The fire department will discuss the requirements to be a volunteer, as well as conduct demonstrations, answer questions, and let visitors know how to get involved in the fire department. Refreshments will be made available to the public as well. MOVIE: Celebrate Arbor Day with the updated Seuss classic “The Lorax” (PG) Friday, April 26, 3:30-5pm. A MESSAGE FROM THE ASSESSOR Sand Lake has just completed the first step of our 2013 valuation update. If your assessment has increased, you will be mailed a notice with the new amount. Only those properties with increases will have notices mailed in an effort to reduce our Town’s expenses. If you receive a notice, take some time to review the new tentative assessment. The first question to ask is: If I were to sell my property, what would it sell for? Is that amount less than or about the same as your new tentative assessment? If the answer to this question is yes, and you are satisfied with your tentative assessment, you need not take any further action. However, if you question the accuracy of your tentative assessment, you may schedule an appointment for an Informal Review, call (518) 674-2026 Ext. 24. ~ Judy Goodyer, Sand Lake Town Assessor

I cannot believe that a year ago I was being crowned the Rensselaer County Dairy Princess, to me it seems like just yesterday. These past twelve months, I had the opportunity to meet so many different people. I was given the great opportunity of gathering with many of the hard working dairy farmers of Rensselaer County and New York. The people that are truly the backbone of America, working 365 days a year on their farms. I thank you for all youR hard work that you do every day, without you this program would not be possible. I also had the chance to meet many consumers of dairy products, from little kids at school programs to adults at farmers markets and many more in between. I enjoyed talking with and educating these consumers about the amazing dairy industry and our nutritious products. The year ahead I will continue as The New York State Dairy Princess, and I will always be a lifetime promoter of the dairy industry. I look forward to many exciting opportunities at the state level and to college in the fall. This would have not been possible without the help of so many people. The Alternate Dairy Princess, Olivia and the Ambassadors work hard with me to promote the industry. The county committee has assisted and encouraged my ideas and our promotions. My family has given me support and reinforcement over the past year. We have had many ups and downs, but we always seem to find time for each other. From keeping my feet on the ground, to a pat on the back and lending an ear, your inspiration will always take me far. The dairy farmers of Rensselaer County, who work hard to produce a wholesome and nutritious product, without you this program and chance for me and others would not be imaginable. The newspapers who have published my articles and shared the stories of farm life, how farmers protect their land and the environment, how they care for their cows and the nutritious products they produce. For all of you, the two words, Thank You, are not enough. Always remember to have your three every day, because the nine essential nutrients in dairy products will fuel your body to conquer the challenges each day brings. ~ Courtney Luskin, NYS Dairy Princess

CITIZENS OF HOPE The Stuyvesant and Nassau Reformed Churches will move to text from Revelation 21:1-6 in worship on Sunday, April 28, 2013. In looking at the holy city, the new Jerusalem, with its description as a beautiful, heavenly city of God, they will focus on John’s concluding vision of that city as “a new heaven and a new earth.” In the sermon, titled “Citizens of Hope,” the Reverend Edward L. Van Kampen will point to that city as a place in which the tragedies of earth are healed by the one who is the Alpha and the Omega.” The Stuyvesant Reformed Church worships at 9a.m. in the hamlet of Stuyvesant. The Nassau Reformed Church worships at 11a.m., 43 Church Street (Rte 20), Nassau.
