SCHODACK CSD BOARD OF EDUCATION CORRECTS INACCURACIES Letter to the Editor: The Schodack CSD BOE would like to correct numerous inaccuracies in a letter recently printed in The Advertiser. Most importantly, we want to correct the claim the Capital Project proposition and budget are the Superintendent’s ideas. They are a collaborative effort between the Board, Superintendent and administration discussed at public meetings. We welcome staff and community in these discussions, including Board meetings, forums and Educational Summits we’ve held. The letter inaccurately states that schools don’t need superintendents and recommends eliminating all but one principal. New York requires that every school have a principal, and the scope of responsibilities mandated for a superintendent makes this position a necessity. School administrators have far greater demands today, due to federal and state mandates. The letter takes issue with our Superintendent’s salary, but in reality, it is well below state and county averages. The letter questions what our teachers do and criticizes them for receiving raises. We welcome our community in our schools to see the great work they do each day. Faculty has received step raises (Triborough Amendment), but not cost-of-living adjustments because they’ve worked without a contract renewal for three years. Yet these professionals continue to work hard for students. The letter states the pupil-to-teacher ratio is 13-1 despite a contract allowing 30-1. Dividing the number of students by the total number of teachers does not provide an appropriate ratio. A more appropriate measure is average classroom size, which is ~24 students. The letter inaccurately claims the Capital Project proposition will put the district $1.25 million in debt. The project would receive 76.6% state aid. It addresses issues like 59-year-old water mains. If not replaced, the pipes will likely break. The District may then have to replace them without state aid. The letter recommends ignoring repairs, instead placing High School students in the Middle School until our community decides whether to consolidate with East Greenbush. Secondary students won’t fit in the Middle School. Our community spent 1½ years studying a merger; it would have raised taxes by one-third for Ichabod Crane residents. A merger with East Greenbush would likely have a similar outcome. If anyone has questions about these or any issues, please let us know. Letter to the Editor: I’ve been a regular attendee of East Greenbush School Board of Education meetings for 25 years, first as a parent and taxpayer, and then also as a district employee, including the past two years as the president of the School-Related Personnel Union. This quarter of a century has brought us dozens of fine people who as BOE members have stepped forward to help lead our district through both the good times and the tough (and sometimes quite contentious) times as well. This unpaid volunteer position, among the most important in any community, requires a tremendous commitment of time, energy, dedication, and a willingness to sometimes make unpopular but necessary decisions. But more importantly, in my estimation, is the willingness to be open-minded and respectful towards fellow board members when disagreements arise during discussion. This quality has always been evident in each of our current board members, so there is no easier decision for me to make when I vote on May 20th. We have a fabulous board, and I’m proud to serve our district under their guidance. As legislative representatives of District 2, including the towns of East Greenbush, North Greenbush and Poestenkill, we are happy to provide our constituents with a report on actions taken at the April 8, 2014 legislative meeting. We are happy to report some more good news on county finances. Rensselaer County has been one of a handful of counties that has stayed within the state tax cap, and also earned very positive fiscal ratings. As legislators, we work to maximize every taxpayer dollar and pursue all reasonable savings. The Legislature does its part by keeping spending under budget, with the legislative budget coming under budget in 2013 by $46,000. Legislators voted at the April legislative meeting to transfer that savings to the Taxpayer Protection Fund, which has been utilized in recent years to protect needed services and reduce tax increases. Along with the savings by the Legislature, days following the meeting the county was informed the county’s bond rating was being raised to the AA level. The upgrade of the county’s already strong bond rating noted the effective fiscal management by County Executive Jimino. We are particularly proud of the Legislature’s role in supporting fiscal policies that result in an upgrade of the bond rating during a difficult economic recession. We were happy to attend an event at the East Greenbush Veterans of Foreign Wars Post on April 19 as the post unveiled improvements and additions, including a new floor. We joined the VFW in thanking resident Scott Higgins for volunteering to supervise the project, helping arrange donations and volunteers. In 2010, the Legislature generated a savings of $900,000 from a re-bid of the county insurance contract. At the April 8 legislative meeting, the Legislature entered into an agreement with Compass Company Consultants to serve as consultant on the new contract. Compass served as consultant on the 2010 agreement. The Legislature and the Town of North Greenbush will sponsor an electronics recycling event on May 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Rensselaer Technology Park. A wide variety of appliances, computers and electronic items can be recycled for free at the event. The next meeting of the Rensselaer County Legislature is Tuesday, May 13, 2014. AIRMAN BATES GRADUATES BASIC TRAINING Air Force Airman Jacob M. Bates graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eightweek program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Bates is the son of Michael F. Bates of Averill Park. He is a 2014 graduate of Averill Park High School.

APCSD SUPERINTENDENT TO PRESENT PROPOSED 2014-15 BUDGET Letter to the Editor: On Tuesday, May 13, on behalf of the Board of Education, I will present the proposed 2014-2015 budget to the community for the annual public hearing. This is the budget to be placed before the voters on May 20, 2014. For the first time since 2008-2009, this budget does not reduce or eliminate any staff or programs available to students. It also stays within the district’s tax levy cap of 2.02%. As noted in a previous letter to The Advertiser, there will be a bus purchase referendum to be placed before the voters as well. The plan is to purchase 8 buses in addition to a dump truck and a tractor. Due to an earlier bus purchase being paid off, approval of this purchase will not create an increase in residents’ tax bills. On May 20, the vote on the budget, Board candidates and the bus purchase runs from 7:00 AM until 9:00 PM in the auxiliary gym in Averill Park High School. CAPITAL COMMUNITY VOICES PRESENTS “FRONTIER FANTASIES” Capital Community Voices, directed by Julie Panke, will present “Frontier Fantasies” on Saturday, May 10th, at 7:30 pm at Genet Elementary School, Route 4, East Greenbush, NY. The Annual Spring Bazaar will be held on Saturday, May 17th, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Nassau Free Library. The library is located at 18 Church St., Nassau, NY. (Parking at St. Mary’s Church, off Rt. 20). This year the booths will include; bakery goods, plants, jewelry, books and games, as well as children’s activities. Again this year, the Nassau Community Band and the Kitchen Kylie Band, 2 local music groups, will entertain us. In addition to the booths, the Friends are fortunate again this year to have a beautiful King size quilt donated by Patricia Piniazek, and Raffle tickets will be for sale during the bazaar. We hope to raise $1,000 for furniture and other items for a new reading area in the library. Donations for the bazaar, such as bakery goods, books, plants or jewelry are being accepted. DUNHAM HOLLOW-WEST STEPHENTOWN SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABILITY The scholarship committee announces the availability of the Dunham Hollow-West Stephentown Scholarship. The scholarship is in memory of Frank Johnson. On April 9, I was the speaker representing the Protestant and other religious traditions to welcome the Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger, on the eve of his ordination and installation as the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany. I share my remarks at the Vespers at Pius X Catholic Church, Loudonville. It is with humility that I am pleased to represent the Protestants and the ecumenical and interreligious community within the Diocese of Albany. We welcome you, Bishop-Elect Edward Scharfenberger to this new place for your life and work. As the Protestant representative on the Diocesan Commission For Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs, I have enjoyed serving with many of those devoted to ecumenical and interreligious relations. Among all Christians, we share one Lord, one faith and one baptism. Under the leadership of Bishop Howard Hubbard and the ecumenical officer, Rev. Jim Kane, there has been a long and active relationship among many of the different religious traditions and denominations. We also celebrate the covenant relations between the Episcopal and Catholic churches, The Cathedral of All Saints and the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception. We also recognize one of the ecumenical pioneers in the city, Rev. Bob Lamar. It is my ardent hope and prayer that all of these relationships will continue to grow and deepen with your new leadership. In recent years, the three-year Amazing God program has highlighted the qualities of the God we seek to serve. The recent Called by Name program has helped identify those to serve as priests, religious and laypersons and helped all of us to renew our vocations. The work for justice and peace for all people continues to be essential to our work together. It has been a special joy to observe the fresh leadership and wisdom of His Holiness Pope Francis. He has clearly shown how we are all to follow in the footsteps of our Lord Jesus Christ. I rejoice in his wisdom in many ways, including his appointment of you as our new bishop. It has been evident that the Pope has lifted you from your parish ministry to lead the people of this diocese. Just as Bishop Hubbard walks in the footsteps of our Lord, may you continue to walk in these footsteps in all the years to come. May each of us join with you in the words you have chosen as your episcopal motto, the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, “Lord, make me a channel of your peace. “ I offer the blessing of God and all of us as you begin to teach and to preach, to be a true shepherd and guide to those in your care, and to help us grow in holiness. May you strengthen the unity of the Church which exists in this diocese and reveal the special gifts of the Spirit in your new ministries. May you implement the teachings of the Scripture and Tradition of the Church, including the guide for every area and level of the Church, the Ecumenical Directory of 1993. Within my tradition of the United Church of Christ, we used to observe Reformation Sunday in October. In recent years, we have changed the name to Reconciliation Sunday. In that spirit, Here I stand to offer my support, welcome and blessings to all those who are part of this wonderful Diocese of Albany and to you as our new Bishop.

legislative representatives of District 4, including the towns of Schodack, Nassau and Sand Lake, we are happy to provide our constituents with a report on actions taken at the April 8, 2014 legislative meeting and other meetings during the month. During the current economic times, Rensselaer County has worked hard to protect taxpayers and create an environment for growth and job creation. Our county has stayed within the state tax cap each of the past three years the cap has been in effect, and the county has also received positive audits and financial reviews. The county’s record of effective fiscal management continued with the county receiving an upgrade in the county’s bond rating. The county is now rated at AA, showing the county is a solid choice for investment and business growth. The upgrade of our already strong bond rating noted effective fiscal management by County Executive Jimino, and we are proud of supporting fiscal policies that result in an upgrade of the bond rating. In 2010, the Legislature generated a savings of $900,000 from a re-bid of the county insurance contract. At the April 8 legislative meeting, the Legislature entered into an agreement with Compass Company Consultants to serve as consultant on the new contract. The Legislature and the Town of North Greenbush will sponsor an electronics recycling event on May 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Rensselaer Technology Park. A wide variety of appliances, computers and electronic items can be recycled for free. We thanked Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Department Deputies Zach Sharpe and Jamie Panichi for saving the life of a county resident. David Hawley is retiring as director of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County after leading Extension over a three decade period. We thanked Dave for his service to Extension and to county residents. We were joined by the family of Warren Carner, a well-known and wellliked Castleton resident who passed away earlier this year after a long illness.Employees of Siemens USA did a clean-up of the Papscanee Nature Preserve on April 25 to help get the Preserve ready for the coming summer season. The next meeting of the Rensselaer County Legislature is Tuesday, May 13, 2014. by Riley Ludwig The spring season is well past the halfway point, and the Averill Park Warriors had another great week of competitions. The Lady Warriors of softball had a week of tough games. The first was a home game played on Monday, 4/28, against our rival, Columbia. This game would result in the first loss of the season for the Warriors. They played hard, but couldn’t defeat Columbia, losing 10-0. However, Thursday, 5/1, would be a different story. The ladies traveled to play Shenendehowa. Averill Park has never defeated Shenendehowa in softball history, until now! The ladies beat Shen, 5-4. Senior Kelly Donnelly hit three singles, scored two runs, and had an RBI in this game. Junior Caraline Wood also delivered two doubles and two RBIs. The ladies hit the road to face Colonie this Friday, 5/9. The baseball team had another busy week, playing four games. They started off with a home game against Columbia on Monday, 4/28, but the Warriors couldn’t defeat the Blue Devils. They lost, 11-2. The Warriors played at Troy on Tuesday, 4/29, and secured a 6-5 win over the Flying Horses. Seniors Nolan Gray and Devin VanDervoort worked the mound in this game. The Warriors played at Shen on Thursday, 5/1, but couldn’t overcome the Plainsmen, and lost, 17-4. On Friday, 5/2, the Warriors played under the lights at Joe Bruno Stadium against Shaker. They played hard, but ultimately fell to Shaker, 8-1. The boys travel to play Colonie on Friday, 5/9. The lacrosse team had a tough three-game week, beginning with a home game against Shaker on Monday, 4/28. The ladies lost to Shaker, 20-9. The ladies had another home game on Tuesday, 4/29, against Columbia. They lost this game as well, 19-9. Junior Caitlin O’Shea scored four goals against the Blue Devils. The Lady Warriors competed at Shen on Thursday, 5/1. However, they did not get the win on the road, and lost, 15-8. The deficit could have been much greater though, had junior goalkeeper Morgan Minkler not stopped 24 goals from being scored! The ladies play their last game of the regular season this Thursday, 5/8, at home against Colonie. It’s Senior Night, so come out and support the seniors! School history was made at the Tuesday, 4/29, boys’ track meet at Shen. Senior Wes Clayton broke his own school record in the 400m event with a time of 50.7! Averill Park High School Senior Eric Bush first became interested in tennis when he didn’t have anything to do in the spring and thought the game looked like fun. Eric has been playing tennis for four years now, and he is number 2 on the team; meaning he plays second singles. Eric is also co-captain of the team and has been on the varsity tennis team all four years of high school. Last year, Eric was the tennis team scholar athlete award recipient. Eric and the team began practicing every day after school as soon as the courts cleared of snow and whenever there wasn’t a match. Besides tennis, Eric also plays varsity soccer and varsity bowling on the Averill Park teams, and plays basketball outside of school. When Eric isn’t playing tennis, he enjoys hanging out with friends, playing other sports, cooking, and buying sneakers. For Eric’s senior year of high school, he is taking AP (Advanced Placement) Government and Politics, AP Biology, AP English, and Statistics. Eric has an overall GPA of 95 and is a member of the National Honor Society as well as their treasurer. After high school, Eric is attending Syracuse University, but is still undecided of his major. Letter to the Editor: Phil Vecchio (4/3/14) blames the State Comptrolleridentified (OSC) “poor condition of the Town’s accounting records” on Kate Bennett and Laura Ingoldsby. Folks, OSC was referring to 2010 and 2011, the period it was auditing. Kate Bennett’s term as Town Comptroller ended 1/4/10. Laura Ingoldsby was responsible for payroll and employee benefits. The (Democrat-controlled) Town Board retained UHY, LLP CPA to conduct “a full audit of the financial and related records of the town … for the fiscal year 2009” on 6/09/10. UHY concluded that “In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly in all material respects, the financial position of the general fund, special revenue funds and capital projects fund of the Town of East Greenbush, New York as of December 31, 2009”. Kate Bennett’s last year as Town Comptroller. Rather than admonish Councilperson Phil Malone to “read the audit report provided by the Office of the State Comptroller”, Mr. Vecchio should have read the report in its entirety. He’d have found that the OSC-cited Town Officials’ inability “to determine, with any degree of certainty, what the Town’s fund balances actually were” and OSC’s inability “to verify the exact amount of the fund deficit as of December 31, 2009.” were likely due to “adjusting journal entries proposed the Town’s external auditing firm” (UHY, LLP CPA) not being reflected in the Town’s accounting system. The (Democrat-controlled) Town Board hired Toski, Schaefer & Co. in April, 2011 to audit the Town’s Financial Statements for 2010, 2011 and 2012. The (Democrat-controlled) Town Board also hired Wojeski & Company in May, 2013 to get the Town’s accounting records in condition for Toski to complete the audits. Toski was scheduled to produce a three-year audit report by the end of 2013. Toski’s report is still outstanding, halted by Supervisor Langley in late November, 2013. Let’s end this Lame Blame Game! Let’s get Toski’s audit report issued so we know where the Town finances stand! May brings a profusion of yellow: Colts foot, forsythia, and dandelions abound. May is a month of significant other blossoms, as well: Some foretell the shad run and make us long for Juneberry pie! TIMOTHY H. GIFFORD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Timothy H. Gifford Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2011 by the Gifford Family in memory of Timothy H. Gifford. Tim Gifford was an active farmer and an enthusiastic member of Rensselaer County 4-H, showing both sheep and cows at the Schaghticoke Fair. Tim always lived life to its fullest. This $1500 scholarship has been made possible due to the generosity and kindness of the local community which Tim grew up in and belonged to. Applicants are encouraged to apply multiple times, although each recipient can only receive the scholarship once. One scholarship is available annually to anyone pursuing post-secondary education in agriculture or mechanics. Although special consideration is given to current/past members of a county 4-H program, the applicant need not be a member to apply. NO EAST GREENBUSH CASINO For those who haven’t yet heard, Town Supervisor Keith Langley and the East Greenbush Town Board unanimously voted to allow all reasonable proposals for a Las Vegas-style gambling casino in East Greenbush. They did this at their April 16th meeting, without notice to the public and without input from the public. Within 48 hours, we found out that a $300 million casino site is now being planned for Thompson Hill Rd, near its intersection with Route 4, across from the Walmart plaza. While promoters of the casino promise millions of dollars in revenue for the town, many of us also wonder: what will our town become with an estimated 10,000 extra visitors a day? Numerous studies link casinos to increased crime, including violent crime, traffic, taxes, bankruptcies, and addictions, all while lowering property values and destroying local businesses.
