A NEW FACE ON EAST GREENBUSH: IT’S COMING East Greenbush residents should be pleased to know that the town has actively engaged a process for establishing site design guidelines for the Columbia Turnpike and Troy Road corridors. Such guidelines (rather than standards) will focus on the “sites” along these corridors, rather than the building improvements, per se, and will eventually be incorporated into the town’s zoning law. These two corridors are, without question, significant to the character of the town, the convenience of its residents, and the businesses that populate their frontage. As such, a number of factors will be examined during the process leading to the establishment of the guidelines, including the following: streetscape (trees, benches, sidewalk connections, signage, and lighting); access management (driveway consolidation, shared driveways, and inter-parcel connections); building orientation and site-layout (for redevelopment of existing sites and development of new sites); parking-lot design; transit access (transit-stop locations and pedestrian connections; and green/open-space preservation and landscape design and buffering. Within these two corridors, their two major intersections, Columbia Turnpike/Troy Road and Troy Road/state Route 151 (Couse Corners), will serve as primary study areas that will be used as planning templates for the rest of the areas within the corridors. Once the guidelines are established, they will provide appropriate flexibility to developers so that commercial properties achieve varying degrees of distinction and uniqueness. Eventually, after they’ve been piloted for an appropriate period of time, certain guidelines may be set as standards so that the town will realize a minimum level of visual and functional uniformity. Under the auspices of the Capital District Transportation Committee (CDTC) and the town’s selected planning consultant for this effort, The Chazen Companies, the town has formed a site design guidelines committee to shepherd the guidelinesdevelopment effort. The committee comprises an excellent cross-section of individuals, including town residents, representatives of the CDTC and the Capital District Regional Planning Commission, and town and county officials. A focus group of stakeholders (i.e., beyond the committee) will assemble in August to aid in steering the effort, with a public workshop to follow in September. MICHAEL BELIVEAU GRADUATES FROM THE VERMONT POLICE ACADEMY Michael Beliveau, formerly of Wynantskill, NY, graduated from the Vermont Police Academy on May 24th and will be serving with the Burlington Police Department, Vermont. SAND LAKE HISTORICAL SOCIETY PROGRAM The public is invited to the Sand Lake Historical Society program on Tuesday, June 11th, at 7:30PM at the Sand Lake Baptist Church, Route 43, Averill Park: “Three Centuries on the Hudson River”. The Rensselaer County Historical Society is hosting an Uncle Sam Community Day on Saturday, June 8th, which will honor Samuel Wilson, the historic man behind our national icon. NEW TOWN HISTORIAN IN SAND LAKE ~ BOB MOORE ~ It’s been a few weeks since my appointment as Sand Lake Town Historian, and I would like to thank Flora Fasoldt for the appointment and the Town Board for their support. I started in February as the Deputy Town Historian when Mary French moved downstate. Mary will be missed in her capacity as Deputy Historian, but also for her work as President of the Sand Lake Historical Society and her great contribution as coauthor of the Images of America Series books, Sand Lake and Sand Lake Revisited. In late April, Judy Rowe resigned from the historian position. I had an opportunity to interview her on video with the help of Nancy Davis about her tenure. Judy spent many years in service to the town and did much in the field of family history and genealogy. I am excited and honored to be the new Sand Lake Town Historian. After teaching American History in Algonquin for 27 years, it seems like the perfect job for me. I have already met with a number of people to start. Rev. Robert Loesch, President of the Historical Society, Dennis Sibson, Principal of Miller Hill School, and Kathy Sheehan, Rensselaer County Historian have helped me chart my course. I was able to attend the conference of Public Historians of N.Y. State held in Syracuse. I returned with ideas for projects and some exciting new technology applications for local history. As Judy Rowe ended our video interview when mentioned that “history belongs to all the people.” And so I invite you to visit the Town Historian office to look over our /your historical collection. The office is located on the second floor behind the library and my office hours are Wed. and Thurs. from 10AM to 2PM. You can also call and make an appointment at 674-2026 ext. 20. Come and check out our family history collection and look over the many historic photos. If you are like me, I prefer to know where my food came from and how it was grown. This is easy to do being that we are surrounded by many local farms. These farmers grow some of the best tasting produce, and since the produce hasn’t traveled 1500 miles to get to your table, it is packed with nutrients. Many of these farms are low spray or no spray, meaning they use minimal or no pesticides or herbicides. If you are unsure as to where these gems are located, check out one of the numerous farmers’ markets in the area to become acquainted with the local farming community. Feel free to get to know the farmers and their families and ask questions about their farming practices. Many of these farms also raise a variety of meats as well. These meats are usually pastured and grass-fed, meaning more nutrition for you. Honestly, a pastured local chicken tastes a million times better than a conventionally raised chicken from a factory (and for good reason, think about the bird’s life!). On a separate note, some neighbors in your community will be setting up road stands to sell their excess garden goodies. Most operate on the “honor” system meaning there is a tin you can place your money in. You can pick up fresh fruits and veggies for pretty cheap if you take the time to stop and take a look.

Dear Averill Park Community Members: On Tuesday, May 21st, the annual school vote occurred and the results are: I. School Budget – Yes: 1,463 (67%); No: 716 (33%) II. Capital Improvement Project - Yes: 1,287 (64%); No: 713 (36%) III. Board of Education Seats - Shawn Morgan (1,359), Stuart Nippes (1,171), and Peter Schaefer (1,423). We welcome Peter back and look forward to working with Shawn and Stuart. We would like thank everyone who voted and look forward to sharing the exit survey results soon. There are no winners from this vote, just reassurance the district is doing what it can during these difficult times. We also understand that there is much work left to be done. Our goal continues to be to provide the best education for our students during these unprecedented economic times. Between now and September, district staff and board members will use the summer wisely to make a robust educational program with remaining resources, transition in new board members, as well as initiate the capital project plan. In addition, we are looking to form a legislative action committee. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County will hold its annual “Rensselaer County Garden Tour” on Thursday, June 20, from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Eight private gardens will be featured in the Town of Schodack. This year’s gardens include the gardens of two neighbors connected by a bridge, extensive vegetable gardens, a historic Victorian house and gardens, as well as a new Victorian-inspired home, ponds, pools, perennials and much more. This drive-it-yourself tour will provide any gardener with dozens of inspirational ideas. Maps will be on sale for $10.00 per person (maximum $30.00 per car) and can be purchased from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. the day of the tour at Schodack Town Hall, located on the corner of Routes 9 & 20 and Schuurman Road (at 265 Schuurman Road) across from Tractor Supply. by Claire Everett This week the outstanding AP athletes competed in the highest levels of competition this year. Track and Field and Softball players both came to their contests ready and represented their school with pride. First, Track and Field competed in Class A Sectionals. On the girl’s side, outstanding performances were given by: Eden Zietler, who came in 10th in the 100 Meter Dash, and Elaina Ryan, who earned 4th in the 800 Meter Run. On the boy’s side, congratulations to the 4X400 relay team, which took 5th; the 4X800 relay team, which took 2nd; and finally, to Jon Rodgers, who won gold in boys discus throw. Congratulations to all athletes involved. Then, later in the week, the Warriors traveled to compete in the State 2 Qualifiers. In the very competitive meet, AP found themselves at the top of the heap with performances by Wesley Clayton, who came in 6th in the 400 Meter Dash; Andrew Tario, who came in first in the 3200 Meter Run; and finally, with Jon Rodgers coming in 2nd in the Boys Shot Put and first in Boys Discuss. Again, congratulations to all athletes involved. AP softball also had a very challenging week, full of victory, but also with severe losses. To start out the post-season, the ladies played Burnt Hills. The Warriors were not ready to go home after the first game of Sectionals and brought game winning effort, sealing the deal, 11-5. The ladies then advanced to the Sectional Semi-Finals against South Glens Falls. Unfortunately, the ladies were unable to maintain their winning ways, and AP’s season would end, 5-0. Congratulations to all players who contributed to such a successful Averill Park team, and good luck to all the seniors in their future endeavors. Performing this far into the season is a huge honor at Averill Park; congratulations to all the AP athletes competing in the current sectional games. With just one week left of school, all of our sports here at Averill Park High School have finally reached a close. It’s been a long year for all of our athletes, and now for the seniors, graduation is right around the corner. Some of our senior athletes, however, are moving on to a more competitive level by playing for college. One of our star football players, Brian Reardon, is one of them. Reardon has been playing football for six years and his position is the defensive end. Both his brother and dad played before him, so he wanted to be like them. Games are very exciting for Reardon because of his passion for the game. Sometimes he’d find himself getting very antsy during school, just thinking about the exciting game to come that night. “I’m always nervous before, but then after the coin toss, the nerves would die down and I’d just go out and play,” says the athlete. His favorite part of playing is being part of the team and playing with the guys he’s played with his whole life. In the off season, Brian and the team would work out together about three days a week and also on their own to stay in perfect condition. This past summer, however, Brian was in a bad car accident and was told he had no chance of playing in the upcoming season. That couldn’t stop a dedicated athlete like Reardon though. He attended every practice and game, hoping that he’d be able to play, and about five or six weeks into the season, he was back on the field. Brian was also voted one of the team captains. Being a dedicated athlete is a huge honor to Reardon. He really enjoys being a representative of his school and town. This year, Brian took Ceramics, PreCalculus, Forensics, Economics, Writer’s Workshop and Participation in Government. In the fall, Brian will be attending Hartwick College to play football and study criminal justice. When I asked Brian who his main source of inspiration was, he knew just what to say. “My brother inspired me because I have always looked up to him, and I hope to be successful like he is. And not just on the football field, but life in general,” says Reardon. He would like to thank his family for always being there to support him and push him to succeed. We wish Brian the best of luck in his exciting future to come!

The Walk/Race, held to bring attention to the crime of domestic violence, will take place at the Goff Middle School, Gilligan Road, East Greenbush on Sunday morning, June 9th, 2013. This is a 5K event which will benefit The Nikki Hart Children’s Memorial Fund and the Unity House Domestic Violence Programs. Liza Ellen Warner and Nikki Hart, both of whom grew up in East Greenbush were murder victims in their own homes. At 9:30AM, the youth mile will be held free of charge. Each child will receive a medal. The 5K race/walk will begin at 10AM. AVERILL PARK BOARD OF EDUCATION UPDATE Dear Averill Park Community Members: Prior to our Tuesday, June 11th, board meeting we will be recognizing several people who are retiring. A reception will be held at 6 pm in the Large Group Instruction room at the high school. We would ask anyone who is interested to join us to celebrate the countless lives they have positively influenced over the years. There are not enough words to express the gratitude the school district and its residents can convey to these retiring folks. There are a total of 12 district employees as well as two board members. The staff retiring is taking with them a total of 257 years of district experience. We would like to recognize in particular the two retiring board members. Neil Bonesteel has served for 21 years and Bill Reinhardt has served for 8 years. Both have provided countless hours to the advancement of our district and are to be commended for stepping forward to serve. Is Your Dentist Lyme-Literate? The Northeast eagerly anticipates spring and summer and all the outside activities that warm weather brings. Unfortunately, access to natural settings exposes a growing number of people every year to the possibility of contracting Lyme disease. It is reported that 70% of Lyme disease patients are located in the 6XEPLWWHG E\ Northeast. Lyme disease, the .HQQHWK %R\QWRQ '0' result of a deer tick bite, is difficult to detect. How does the dentist fit into the picture? The disease often hides itself behind dental problems. Patients may be unaware of the Lyme disease/dental connection when they experience oral pain. They may report a toothache or jaw problems during their dental visit. The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) reports that a study of 120 patients with Lyme disease revealed 75% of patients had pain in the chewing muscles, 72% had temporomandibular joint pain, 25% reported burning mouth and 70% reported a sore throat. The diagnoses of Lyme disease is difficult for medical and dental professionals and many patients may not be diagnosed properly until their Lyme disease is at a later stage when it is more difficult to treat. It is important to report an accurate medical history and discuss symptoms when visiting your dentist. About 70 percent of patients with Lyme disease reported dental pain in the absence of dental disease, and the dental pain tended to move from tooth to tooth. If your dentist suspects that your symptoms may be Lyme disease related and not related to tooth or gum issues, you may be referred to your primary care provider for Lyme testing and treatment. A Lymeliterate dentist will be cautious about proceeding with dental treatments, if Lyme disease is suspected.

LEGISLATORS PRAISE MEROLA AND CZAJKA ON NY SAFE ACT DECISION Members of the Rensselaer County Legislature praised Rensselaer County Clerk Frank Merola and Columbia County District Attorney Paul Czajka for their actions with regard to the NY Safe Act in recent weeks. Merola has announced his opposition to processing thousands of requests to “opt-out� of having pistol permit information released to the public. Czajka recently refused to prosecute a violation under the NY Safe Act for an arrest that occurred in the Town of New Lebanon in neighboring Columbia County. Citing costs and infringement on constitutional rights, the Rensselaer County Legislature was one of the first legislative bodies in the state to oppose the NY Safe Act. Several dozen county legislative bodies across the state have adopted resolutions in opposition to the law. “Frank has taken a position that protects the taxpayers of our county and ensures these records do not fall into the wrong hands. The Columbia County District Attorney made a common-sense move to resolve a case that had little merit,� said Legislator Tom Walsh Sr. “These elected officials made the right choice and deserve our support,� added Legislator Judith Breselor. At the same time, legislators are also asking state lawmakers to draft legislation to allow for pistol permit records to be kept confidential without needing an opt-out form. The processing of opt-out forms is expected to require new equipment and possibly new staff, as the opt-out requests is expected to run into the thousands. “A simple change in state law can help avoid the sizable costs for the opt-out. The opt-out provision will create thousands of applications and there is an expense to taxpayers for handling every application,� said Legislator Leon Fiacco. Legislators have introduced a resolution praising Merola and Czajka for their handling of issues related to the NY Safe Act. The resolution will be considered at the June 11 legislative meeting. Legislators have also introduced a resolution calling for the state to change existing state law to allow for pistol permit information to be kept confidential and avoid the expensive opt-out provision. That resolution will also be considered at the June 11 legislative meeting.

On Sunday, June 9, 2013, the Third Sunday after Pentecost, the Stuyvesant and Nassau Reformed Churches will focus on the story in Luke 7:11-17. In that story, Jesus comes across a funeral procession near a gate to the city of Nain, just north of Jerusalem. It was a serious situation- a woman who had lost her husband had now lost her son. She was surrounded with a wealth of mourners; but once they had all gone home she would be alone, without anyone to share her grief and take up companionship. In not having any living relatives, she would likely become penniless and reduced to begging for food. The truth prevails as Jesus comes upon this woman, raises her son from the dead and thus gives her a future. In the sermon titled, “Don’t Let Discouragement Ruin Your Future,” the Reverend Edward L. Van Kampen will point to how Jesus with his compassion for people’s needs came to help this woman. The Stuyvesant Reformed Church worships 9 a.m. in its sanctuary at the corner of Church Street and Route 9J in the hamlet of Stuyvesant. The Nassau Reformed Church worships at 11 a.m. in its chapel, 43 Church Street, Route 20, in the Village of Nassau.
