LOVE LUTHERAN CHURCH Great philanthropic people can afford just about anything. You know who they are: Rockefeller, Carnegie, Dodge, Gates. The wealthy will remain so even as they give their riches away. As Children of God, we too are rich – rich in His blessings of grace and forgiveness, provision and promise. Being so rich, can’t we afford to give? Pastor Henry wrestles with the question on this, Stewardship Sunday, with a sermon entitled “Sowing Seeds,” based on II Corinthians 9:6-7. Come be our guest this Sunday at 10:00 AM as we worship our ascended Lord, Jesus Christ. Love Lutheran Church is located at Middlesex Road and Pheasant Lane in East Greenbush. For more information, a summary of this Sunday’s sermon, or directions, please visit our website: www.lovelutheran.net, or call 477-8685.

Need Help With Your Medicare Open Enrollment? Call Us- We Can Help!! EG TOWN BOARD BUDGET HEARING 11-3-16 Town Supervisor Jack Conway narrated a PowerPoint presentation illustrating the 2017 Preliminary Budget. Historically, this task fell to the Town Comptroller, at least in my recollection. Supervisor Conway did an excellent job. The 2017 Preliminary Budget complies with the NYS Tax Levy Cap (thanks to available carryover), reportedly yields a Tax Levy (NOT Tax Rate) increase of 1.47% and includes: • Accounting software and audits; • 5 new DPW positions (all Town retirements will be reviewed for backfilling on a case-by-case basis); • $500,000 for Luther Road sidewalks; • Repays $683,794 in General Fund inter-fund borrowing (Couse and Mannix Roundabout cost over-runs); • New Police and CSEA contract settlements; • Security windows for Receiver of Taxes and Town Clerk’s offices; • New Town Hall website and telephone system; • Additional road paving; • A cleaning process to reduce odor at the WWTP. Absent from the Preliminary Budget is funding to allow the Receiver of Taxes office to remain open during normal 8:30AM-4:30PM Town Hall Business Hours for the full year, only for select months. The Office will close at 3:00PM other months. Customer service?? However, the 1.47% Tax Levy Increase is across-the-board, including all Town-levied taxes and two fire companies. But no one pays this, as there are four sewer districts and two water districts in EG. Including Bruen Ambulance at no increase, General Water/ General Sewer District residents face a 2.5% increase; General Water/ Couse Sewer +3.05%; General Water/3rd Avenue Sewer +3.00% and Hampton Manor +1.44%. Residents outside of the Sewer and Water Districts + 2.51% based on the General and Highway Funds alone. Also, Best Luther Fire increases $2,040 (2.0%) and 3rd Ave Fire +$160 (2.2%) Definitely not 1.47%. Onerous? I’ll let you decide. FYI, Rensselaer County’s Budget Property Tax Levy increase is reported at 1.61%. ~ Pete Stenson, East Greenbush Editors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion or endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for all intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of its contents.
ALL GAVE SOME ~ SOME GAVE ALL! SAND LAKE HONORS OUR HEROES Veteran’s Day may be only one day a year, but many of us show our support and respect for our Veterans and Military all year long. Whether it’s flying our American Flag, sending packages or having book drives for our heroes overseas, or simply Thanking a Vet for their service. One way that Sand Lake and other towns honor our Veterans is with Memorial Parks. Through perseverance and determination, William H. Hoffay helped to make the dream a reality with The Sand Lake Veteran’s Memorial Park. The official start was in 2001 when the Town received a parcel of ground from the Averill Park School District. A committee was formed to design the park. Ground breaking was June 15th, 2002 and construction of the back wall was started. The total cost for the first phase of the project was approximately $60,000 and it was ALL DONATED. The list of volunteers donating their time and funds is a Very Long List! All of whom we are grateful to and appreciate a great deal. There are still many projects yet to be accomplished, all of which takes time, manpower, and of course, funds. The Sand Lake Veteran’s Memorial Park has a Facebook page with pictures of construction from beginning up to today. It is very impressive to see how many of our local friends and family help to honor our fallen soldiers. Eligibility to have a veteran’s name engraved on the Sand Lake Veteran’s Memorial Park Wall is that All Veteran’s of the Town of Sank Lake and surrounding communities are eligible. All men and women that have served are eligible. Combat service is not required and out of town Veterans with family in the town are also eligible. Proof of service is required with a DD-214 and/or discharge papers. Contact the Veterans Memorial Committee for additional information and rates. Though we have made great progress on the park, there is still so much more to do. With your contribution to the Sand Lake Veteran’s Memorial Park, you can help us to preserve the History of Sand Lake’s Veteran’s and Honor all those who served to ensure your freedom. Donations can be sent to Sand Lake Veteran’s Memorial Park, 171 Biittig Road, Averill Park, NY 12018. Never Forget.

APHS SENIOR BECOMES SCHOOL WINNER IN WENDY’S HIGH SCHOOL HEISMAN There are some students who set the bar. They work harder, show more passion and lead by example—in the classroom, on the field and within the community. Today, Wendy’s High School Heisman recognizes Andrew Balogh from Averill Park High School and his dedication to never cutting corners by naming him a School Winner. “He is known by teachers and friends for his commitment to excellence. We are excited and honored that a program like Wendy’s High School Heisman is also recognizing his hard work. We feel very fortunate to have a dedicated student like Andrew as a member of the Averill Park community” said Ms. Tsao, Principal at Averill Park High School. Since 1994, Wendy’s and the Heisman Trophy Trust have been running the same play to perfection: honoring more than 600,000 of the nation’s most esteemed students. This year, Wendy’s will celebrate the accomplishments of thousands of the best high school seniors, awarding winners in five phases. Both School Winners and State Finalists have been announced today. School Winners will receive a School Winner certificate and a Wendy’s High School Heisman Patch. State Finalists will receive a bronze medal, a Wendy’s High School Heisman State Finalist patch and a $25 gift card. From the group of State Finalists, one senior male and female will be selected from each state and announced as State Winners on October 20. EAST GREENBUSH TAXES Letter to the Editor: East Greenbush has its share of fiscal problems. The EG1st Group inherited what some would call a financial crisis. The Town needed a financial recovery plan. In the past 10 months, EG has made some accomplishments and its boasting can be understood. To name only two- they demolished the dilapidated Weathervane building on Columbia Tpke. They have removed the residency requirements for some of the town positions thus increasing the pool of qualified candidates and limiting nepotism. Those are wonderful things and should be applauded. A proposed tax increase was expected. Residents knew EG was in financial trouble and an increase was likely. The most conservative voters, of which I am one, expected a tax increase and understood its purpose, or so I thought. While a tax increase was expected, cost increases were not. An example-increasing salaries for some positions by over $20,000 doesn’t seem to be wise. The retirement benefits for that position are increased as well, and WE THE PEOPLE pay retirement for the life of the retiree. Overtime has been an unwelcome topic for years and was considered a taboo to discuss. Those issues are also some of the reasons EG fell into financial trouble in the first place. Raising taxes was anticipated; raising costs was not. That was not what I understood from the campaign, and I believe I did not understand that because it was not expressed. Why is raising taxes always the “go to” mechanism? Cost control, which is still found on the EG1st political organization’s website, is always thrown by the way side. Why do politicians, once elected, always forget that caveat? To cut $10,000 in one area then raise costs $30,000 in another area is NOT controlling costs. Raising taxes is an easy solution. It does not require intellect, creativity or budget scrutiny. Politicians wave a wand, or their pen, and BAM-WE THE PEOPLE are paying more. Why do politicians forget to wave the wand and BAM…control spending? ~ Ann Taylor, East Greenbush Resident and Taxpayer Editors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion or endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for all intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of its contents.

GREENBUSH HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING Join the Greenbush Historical Society for an entertaining afternoon on Sunday, Nov. 13th, 2:00, at the East Greenbush library. Steve Trimm, a Grant Cottage tour guide and educator, will present a “living history” portrayal of Saint John Honeywood. Saint John was a Yale graduate, teacher, and attorney in Salem around the 1780’s. He made no secret that he was an eccentric busybody who wanted to learn everything about everyone! Mr. Honeywood was odd but also was an amateur historian who studied post-Revolutionary War society with a keen eye and a good ear with many stories worth retelling. Eventually he became Salem’s “beloved eccentric” and busybody. Please register with the East Greenbush Library at 477-7476 for this delightful program - all are welcome. Light refreshments will be served. THE ADVERTISER ARCS NOVEMBER 10, 2016 PAGE 7
Central School District Dear Averill Park School Community: At the Board of Education meeting this past Monday, the Board approved the appointment of Dr. James Franchini to be Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1, 2017. Dr. Franchini has previously served in Averill Park, having spent six years as Algonquin’s principal and assistant principal. He is returning to the district after spending the last six years in the Voorheesville Central School District as their middle school principal and is currently their Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations. He is very happy and excited to be returning to Averill Park, and is looking forward to working with the Board of Education, the administration, faculty and staff. At the same meeting, the Board accepted the resignation for the purposes of retirement of Dr. Jim Hoffman, our current superintendent. His resignation, effective in June, will be at the end of five years in Averill Park as superintendent. We look forward to celebrating his successes closer to his actual retirement date but thank him for all his hard work. We offer our hearty congratulations to our sports teams that made it into the Section 2 playoffs: • Girls’ soccer team are co-champions for 2016. They tied Mohonasen 0-0 at the end of two overtimes, and so are sharing the title. • Boys’ soccer team played in the Section 2 final, falling to Queensbury. • Girls’ volleyball made it as far as the quarterfinals this year before losing to Burnt Hills. • Finally, at the time of this writing, our football team is playing for the sectional title for the first time in 11 years, taking on Burnt Hills on November 5. They beat Amsterdam 14-7 on October 28. Our congratulations go out to all of our teams on great seasons! GLENDORA’S VEGETARIAN CLUB Friends of animals caught thieves capturing elephants to sell to US zoos. They beat and terrorized the poor creatures, forcing them into crates, and transported the innocent victims to America to be imprisoned and stared at for the rest of their lives by tourists. The poor darlings were torn from their homes and families and agonized into captivity. Does that remind you of 16th century slavery? These zoos make millions with their fees. How much more avaricious can Homo sapiens get and how much farther from the center of the universe? Our hearts ring with a hymn: “He trusts us with His world, All rocks and trees and seas, All creatures everywhere.” Glendora is having a free, cruelty-free Thanksgiving dinner on November 24th, at 6PM at 45A Elm Street in the village of Nassau (17 houses from the Rte. 20 traffic light). The menu will include vegetarian smoked turkey, vegetarian ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, dressing, green peas and vegan pumpkin pie. Call 518-610-5810 for more information. ~ Glendora

FOLLOWING A NEW PATH: NEW VISUAL ARTS PATHWAY GRANTED FOR ADVANCED REGENTS DIPLOMA by Kelsey VanFleet Last spring, the New York State Education Department approved AP Studio Art as a pathway to the Advanced Regents Diploma. Averill Park was proactive, insuring this opportunity was available to its students, and the Art Department is happy to announce that an AP Studio Art class is already up and running. “If someone thinks that they may want to enter a field connected to the visual arts, or if they simply want to submit a supplemental portfolio to increase chances of acceptance or scholarships; they need the strongest portfolio possible,” art teacher Mrs. Gregory said. “This class provides that opportunity.” In fact, there are many advantages that stem from the addition of this course to Averill Park’s Art Curriculum. The submission of an Advanced Placement art portfolio to the College Board is the equivalent to a Regents exam in any other subjects. All portfolios assessed by The College Board that score three or higher are accepted towards the Advanced Regents diploma. This is an exciting opportunity for students who are passionate about the arts as they can now focus more fully on art classes without disrupting their path towards graduation. In addition, many colleges and universities will accept Advanced Placement Studio Art as a transferable elective class, though acceptance policies vary with each institution. For example, the Maryland College Institute of Art accepts AP Studio Art as long as the student has earned a score of four or higher from the College Board. Averill Park is optimistic that other arts pathways will soon be added through AP courses in music and theater. “This class helps students tap into the joy of creating and celebrates their artistic autonomy because it is the student that decides what projects they will pursue,” stated Gregory. The Averill Park students and staff are eagerly waiting to see the amazing work that this year’s AP students will create to launch them into college and career.

CALLED BY JESUS On November 13, 2016, the Twenty-Sixth Sunday after Pentecost, the Nassau Reformed Church will be reminded that it is “Called by Jesus” to stand on tiptoes for a good look at what God is doing among us, even in times of darkness and disaster. In the sermon, based on Luke 21:5-19, the Reverend Edward L. Van Kampen will speak about three important messages for us: There are tough times ahead; Tough times, whether brought about by our attempts to follow Jesus or occurring simply because we are human and not divine, are times for us to speak up for Jesus, even in our pain, even in our sadness.; Jesus represent the truth, we can expect difficulty because we are trying to follow Jesus. Join us and heed the advice of Paul to the Thessalonians, (2 Thess. 3:6-13), “don’t get discouraged in dong what is right;” and come to understand more fully how Jesus walks with us and we walk with him in all we are called to endure. The Nassau Reformed Church begins worship at 11 a.m. in its chapel on the second level of the Church-School-Building, 43 Church St., (Route 20), on the left, approximately one quarter mile east of the only traffic light in the village.

With winter sports coming up, this week we will be honoring sprinter Christian Nash as our scholar athlete! Christian runs both indoor and outdoor track and ran Cross Country this year. Christian says that he loves track for the intensity of every race he runs and the connections he forms with other runners. However, track is also physically and mentally demanding. “It’s hard when you don’t hit the times you were aiming for,” Christian explains, “But you have to stick with it. You’re going to be hurting after practice and the meets, but that’s how you improve your times.” Christian applies his hard work ethic to school as well. He maintains a 97 GPA while participating in numerous classes. This year, Christian is taking Choir, Forensics, Sci-Fi and Fantasy, Economics, Pre-Calc and Latin. Christian states that he always seeks help on topics he doesn’t understand in school to keep improving his grades. After high school, Christian plans to go to college and study forensics. Christian’s coaches and teammates provide him with the inspiration and motivation to continue working hard. “My teacher and coach, Mr. Keegan, continues to inspire me. Whether I am working on a math problem or running as fast as I can, he provides me with support. My other coaches and teammates inspire me as well. They are always there to help me give everything I have by cheering and yelling during every race.” Christian’s favorite memory was the Penn Relays, which is a highly competitive outdoor track meet. “The Penn Relay meet was the largest meet I’ve ever been a part of. The roar of the crowd gave me all the motivation I needed to give to finish my leg of the 4x400m relay as strong as possible. The three seniors that were on my team gave everything they had as well. We made the strongest team I have ever competed in.” This year, Christian hopes to break the 400m Dash record in outdoor track. Best of luck to Christian as he continues his year at Averill Park! ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○

FAR WORSE!? Letter to the Editor: Hillary Clinton. Imagine the psychological damage she has as a wife whose husband cheated with hundreds of woman and about a dozen who made rape and sexual assault complaints. She threatened “Slick Willie’s” sexual assault / rape victims, that’s been a felony for years; laughed about getting a child rapist off; took donations for the Clinton Foundation from countries where rape victims are persecuted for adultery; rigged primaries against Bernie; lost $6 million at state dept.; 4 dead Americans in Benghazi, lied about the cause; private, un-secure email server, l ied about deleting 33k emails; lied about her health; never-beforeheard-of over 20-year-old allegations against Donald Trump being reported just before the election, etc., etc. The evidence of Clinton’s psychological damage is her dishonesty and pathological lying. She is emotionally, psychologically and morally unfit to be elected anything. She couldn’t or wouldn’t protect one embassy, she will never protect our country, a vote for her is like letting Casey Anthony babysit your kids or grand kids. Wake-up America! ~ Kevin Harrington, Schodack Editors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion or endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for all intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of its contents.

SCHEDULE FOR REVIEW OF 2017 BUDGET PROPOSAL SET The schedule for review and adoption of the proposed 2017 Rensselaer County budget has been set, Chair of the Legislature Stan Brownell announced. The budget is the sixth consecutive county budget to stay under state tax cap and protects needed services. The budget helps the county maintain the strong financial position the county has earned in recent years, including a series of positive independent audits, and an upgrade in the bond rating. The county’s strong financial position has helped attract new investment and job creation, including at Regeneron and other businesses. “We are continuing our review of the budget, and are glad our goal of keeping the budget under the state tax cap has been met. We will work to strengthen the budget to protect taxpayers and needed services, along with encouraging future job creation in our county,” said Brownell. The legislative budget review process is conducted according to the County Charter and the rules of the Legislature. The process affords the public different opportunities to speak on the proposed spending plan. “These meetings are a good opportunity for the public and interested organizations to give their opinion and input on the budget. We look forward to a productive and open review of the 2017 budget proposal in the coming weeks,” said Vice Chair for Finance Phil Danaher. HELP FOR HOMEOWERS IN FORECLOSURE New York State requires that we send you this notice about the foreclosure process. Please read it carefully. SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT You are in danger of losing your home. If you fail to respond to the summons and complaint in this foreclosure action, you may lose your home. Please read the summons and complaint carefully. You should immediately contact an attorney or your local legal aid office to obtain advice on how to protect yourself. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE. The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid, there are government agencies, and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with our lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by New York State Banking Department at 1-877-Bank-NYS or visit the Department`s website at www.banking.state.ny.us FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to "save" your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner's distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. Section 1303 NOTICE YOU ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME If you do not respond to this summons and complaint by serving the copy of the answer on the attorney for the mortgage company who filed this foreclosure proceeding against you and filing the answer with the court, a default judgment may be entered and you may lose your home. Speak to an attorney or go to the court where your case is pending for further information on how to answer the summons and protect your property. Sending a payment to your mortgage com-
g g pany will not stop this foreclosure action. YOU MUST RESPOND BY SERVING A COPY OF THE ANSWER ON THE ATTORNEY FOR THE PLAINTIFF MORTGAGE COMPANY AND FILING AN ANSWER WITH THE COURT. Leopold & Associates, PLLC, 80 Business Park Drive, Suite 110, Armonk, NY 10504. Our file #

CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION WORKSHOP The Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Department announced earlier this year that Rensselaer County was selected as a site for the Enough Abuse Campaign. This campaign is a primary prevention effort to stop the sexual abuse of children. The Sheriff’s Department is offering a variety of programs to be held throughout the county. CCE of Rensselaer County will be one of the hosting sites. The workshop selected to be presented at CCE is “It’s Not Just Jenna”. Sexual abuse overall is an uncomfortable topic to address but a very critical topic for the safety and wellbeing of our youth. We hope many residents and youth workers will plan on attending this workshop. There will not be any fee and light refreshments will be included. Please mark your calendar for November 16th from 6 to 8 PM. The training will take place in our 2nd floor education room located at 61 State Street in Troy. This training will include: Behavior signs to be aware of in adults that may pose a risk to youth; how abusers groom or establish trust with potential victims and their families; Behavior signs to watch for in youth as signs of abuse; Why it is difficult for victims to seek help; How to respond. Deadline to register to attend is November 10th. Please spread the word and call the CCE office or email Bernie at bw27@cornell.edu to sign up. All adults are welcome.
