Bulletin Board Church Penny Social COHOES – St. Michael’s Church, Page Ave. in Cohoes will be hosting their annual Penny Social on Sunday, March 3. Doors open at 12pm with games starting at 2pm. Button Club to Meet DELMAR – The Half Moon Button Club will meet on Wednesday, March 13 at 11am at the Bethlehem Library, 451 Delaware Avenue, Delmar. The social time starts at 11am and the business meeting starts at noon. Members are asked to bring buttons of witches and black cats to be placed on our NYS Button Society Club award card. Attendees will learn what constitutes an award winning button card and how button cards are judged. Bring a brown bag lunch. Dessert will be provided. 6th Annual Celtic Jam CAPITAL REGION – The Scotia-Glenville Pipe Band is proud to announce their 6th Annual Celtic Jam at 7pm on Friday, March 8 in the Scotia-Glenville High School Auditorium, Scotia, New York. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the Capital Region’s very own worldclass, award-winning youth pipe band. Admission is “Pay What You Can” with all proceeds benefiting the Scotia-Glenville Pipe Band programs. Last August, the Pipe Band placed first in their division at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland. Founded in 1989 as an enhancement to the ScotiaGlenville School District’s Scottish heritage, the Scotia-Glenville Pipe Band has evolved and become a
private non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization. The band’s mission is to teach and develop youth pipers and drummers to achieve excellence in competition and performance through the pipe band idiom. Promoting the values of dedication, hard work, and commitment to a musical team are priorities with the goal of becoming a first-rate competitive band. Program on Robert Hewson Pruyn LATHAM – Erika Sanger, Director of Education at the Albany Institute of History and Art, will discuss the diplomatic mission and exploration of Japanese culture by Robert Hewson Pruyn. Pruyn was appointed Minister by Abraham Lincoln in 1861. Pruyn’s private papers include detailed and descriptive correspondence between Pruyn and his wife, other family members, and business associates. The letters recount his travel, the death of his eldest son Edward in San Francisco en route, his first audience at the palace of the Japanese Tycoon, day-to-day financial concerns and the travails of his mission in Japan during the Bakumatsu. Sanger will share images of some of the photographs and ephemera Pruyn collected and read excerpts from the letters. The talk will be at 2pm on Sunday, March 24. (P)

West Troy Pottery LOUDONVILLE – The Historical Society of the Town of Colonie cordially invites you to a special presentation by Timothy Myers on Sunday, March 10, at 2pm. The talk will take place at the Town of Colonie Library, 629 Albany Shaker Rd., Loudonville. Admission is free. Mr. Myers’ presentation will include a description of the methods of producing pottery - the potter’s tools and techniques etc. He will discuss the differences between redware, stoneware and the various types of stoneware products. There will be a brief history of each West Troy Pottery with a map showing the location of each. Photos of outstanding pieces of West Troy Pottery, that have sold over the last several years, will be included in the presentation. On hand will be 25-30 pieces of West Troy stoneware.
