Mechanicville promotes heavy equipment operator City now has 2 employees to work 1 snowblower, 1 sweeper ByLINE: KATHLEEN MOORE
MECHANICVILLE - The city has one snowblower. But now it is paying two people to run it. The City Council voted Wednesday night to promote a second worker to heavy equipment operator, a position that comes with a pay raise. In 2022, the council may agree to buy equipment for the employee to run. The employee has long since been certified to use heavy equipment, and when the other operator is off, he is paid the higher rate to run
the city’s snowblower if needed. Now he’ll get that pay all the time. In the summer, he and the other operator can take turns driving the city’s one street sweeper. The sweeper and the snowblower, used to clear sidewalks the city owns and other places plows can’t fit, are currently the city’s only equipment that requires the safety-training of a heavy equipment operator. (Plows only require a commercial driver’s license.) Given the limited equipment, two City Council members questioned the need for a full-time second operator. “Why do we need two?” asked Councilwoman Barbara McGuire.
Councilman Anthony Gotti, the commissioner of Public Works, explained that sometimes, one operator would be out sick or on vacation. Then he must put someone in at the higher pay rate. “He could be in it for 21 minutes and you have to pay him for the whole day,” Gotti said. “That’s still cheaper than two people,” McGuire said. Gotti explained that his end goal is to slowly add an entire second crew, with equipment. “Putting two crews out, I’m trying to get it grown to that,” he said. That news was a surprise to the rest of the Please see RAISE 8
McNeil glad to be back as part of the huddle After two years of soccer, RB stars in gridiron return ByLINE: JAMES ALLEN
STILLWATER - CJ McNeil proved he could be a force as a varsity soccer player at Stillwater, yet he felt something was missing athletically. After watching older brother Brian McNeil help lead the Warriors’ football team to the program’s first sectional title, an inkling to return to the gridiron began to consume CJ McNeil. He acted on it. “I played soccer when I was younger and my friends were on the team,” McNeil said. “I thought it would be fun so I did
that, but it is probably my biggest regret.” “He found his way back and did it on his own,” Stillwater football coach Ian Godfrey said. “CJ enjoys being here and wants to prove he is not only capable, but is a superstar in the league.” McNeil, who is literally half the size of his older brother, who is now playing defensive line as a sophomore for undefeated Division III RPI, has flourished at running back. In four games, McNeil has carried the ball 55 times for 643 yards and seven touchdowns. He also has six receptions for 57 yards and three touchdowns for Stillwater (4-1 overall, 3-0 Class D South) as it returns to action Friday

Pet-friendly fabrics to try at home Maintaining a pet-friendly household requires contending with a certain measure of dirt, dander and fur.
Residential & Commercial • Free Estimates • Fully Insured • Guaranteed
It’s often a sacrifice made for the immeasurable benefits that come from having companion animals. Even when their owners are especially careful, pets can do some damage around the house. Homeowners can mitigate potential problems by choosing largely pet-proof furniture fabrics. • Woven fabrics: Fabrics that have visual texture or subtle patterns can help disguise stains and make pet hair less noticeable. Opt for a color similar to a pet’s fur color to further camouflage shed hair. Pet owners should know that cats may get their claws stuck in certain woven fabrics. • Leather and faux leather: Many pet owners like that leather and faux leather products are nonabsorbent and resistant to stains, odors and punctures. In addition, fur won’t cling to leather and similar fabrics easily, making them a better choice for those with dander and fur allergies. • Microfiber: Microfiber is tightly woven, making it a good option for durable, high-end elegance. Dirt and dust cannot penetrate the fabric, and cats are less likely to get their claws into this fabric. Some microfibers are odorand stain-resistant as well, though spills will need to be mopped up quickly. One concern with microfiber is the material tends to hold onto pet fur. As a result, owners may spend ample time vacuuming shed hair.
• Synthetic materials: Polyester, acrylic or nylon materials can stand up to wear and tear longer than others, so they may be appealing if pets will be allowed on the furniture. Durable fabrics also can be wiped clean with a cloth.

A day spent making homemade ornaments is another great way to decorate and spend quality time together as a family during the holiday season. Though families can let their imaginations run wild when making ornaments at home, the following are some great starting points that can serve as springboards for holiday crafting sessions. • Snowmen: The holiday season simply wouldn’t be the same without snowmen. Homemade snowmen can be made out of ping pong balls, which are the ideal size when making ornaments for the Christmas tree. Those who want to go a little bigger can glue wiffle balls or large polystyrene balls together or create their own papier mâché snowmen to display on mantles or on console tables in a foyer or hallway. • Santa Claus: Another staple of holiday decor, Santa Claus has inspired many a DIY holiday ornament over the years. A paper plate Santa Claus with a cotton ball beard glued on can make for a fun Christmas craft, especially for young children who can’t wait for the big guy to
appear on Christmas Eve. • Penguins: Though they might not have a direct link to the holiday season, penguins evoke feelings of cold weather, making them an ideal addition to holiday decor schemes. Make your own penguin family using polystyrene craft balls in assorted sizes and then hang them on the tree or place them around the house. • Reindeer: Santa would not be able to get the job done each Christmas Eve without his trustworthy team of reindeer. Popsicle stick reindeer projects can be fun for kids of all ages and a great way for youngsters to recognize the efforts of Dasher, Dancer, Comet, Cupid, and, of course, Rudolph, among others. • Cookie cutters: Family baking sessions are a holiday tradition for millions of people. Though that often leads to batches upon batches of tasty cookies, it also means families tend to have a surplus of holiday cookie cutters around the house. Surplus cookie cutters tend to be discarded or relegated to the miscellaneous items drawer in kitchens, but a more awe-inspiring fate can await them. A coat of paint, some glitter and a little bit of string or twine is all families need to transform their extra cookie cutters into colorful tree ornaments. Holiday decorating sessions can be made even more fun when families take time to craft some DIY decorations together.

“Why not wait until you get the equipment, before you hire the person to use it, if you even get it,” she asked. Gotti appeared to back down, saying “It’s all hypothetical at this point,” but city attorney Lyn Murphy stopped him. “It’s time for us to vote,” she said. McGuire and Johnson abstained, while the other two councilmen and the mayor voted yes.

Each Hoffman location will donate the collected items to a food pantry in its neighborhood. MCNEIL CONTINUED FROM 3
Godfrey expects a big performance from McNeil, who is a standout for the varsity basketball team. “I would say that is a ‘McNeil’ trait. They rise to the level of competition,” Godfrey said. “He is going to be ready to go Friday night and he has a really good supporting crew. It is going to be a battle and probably a preview of the sectional semis.” McNeil has the same No. 2 jersey that Mason Seymour donned as the lead running back on the 2019 Class C sectional championship team. Along with his older brother, McNeil grew up idolizing Seymour. He played modified football before joining the varsity soccer program. “He is a good guy to emulate. I try to do what he did,” McNeil said of Seymour. “We had a great No. 2 for a long time, so it is great to see him wear it and carve out his own legacy,” Godfrey said. “He was one of the better (soccer) players on the team. Going into his junior year with the pandemic and everything, he said, ‘I want to play football. I have tried both sports, but this is what I want to do.’ He committed last year and what an addition he has been. “He has a really high football IQ. His vision is fantastic. CJ is really quick and his ability to hit the hole -- and make a guy miss who normally would make the tackle -- is what really makes him special.” Twice in the four games that the Warriors have competed in (one of their victories was by forfeit), McNeil has surpassed the 200-yard plateau. He rolled up 243 yards on the ground against Chatham and dashed for 227 yards vs. Cohoes. “I have gained a lot of confidence for my senior year,” McNeil said. “I try to bring energy to the team and keep the guys

pumped up.” Godfrey says McNeil has an ‘it’ factor that teammates gravitate toward. Like Seymour before him, the diminutive senior adeptly follows his blocks and often is lost by the defense hiding behind the team’s large offensive line. “I would be nowhere without the offensive line,” McNeil said. “They do what they do very well and they make it easier for me for sure.” McNeil, who said he had no expectations regarding how well he would do upon returning to play football, is tough and unrelenting as a competitor. He uses his quickness and vision to avoid big hits and is a menace for the defense once he gets past the line of scrimmage. Godfrey believes McNeil, who also starts at defensive back, can play like his brother at the Division III level after high school. The senior has yet to decide if he will pursue football or basketball. He does know he is grateful to have the support from his older brother. “He loves watching. I love watching him play at RPI too,” McNeil said. jallen@timesunion.com518-454-5062@ TUSidelines

History Center Publishes New Book: Saratoga County Stories SARATOGA COUNTY – The trustees, staff, and
volunteers of the Saratoga County History Center, in partnership with the Saratoga County History Roundtable, are thrilled to announce the publication of Saratoga County Stories. A collection of essays and articles from local historians, the book is aimed at the general public, and will delight readers of all ages with snapshots of the past and true tales of crime, heroism, and colorful personalities. Saratoga County Stories, which is slated for an October 2021 release, is a major achievement for the History Center and the Roundtable, and the product of over a year of writing and editing. Comprised of fifty-eight short articles, the collection is a veritable who-what-where-whenand-why of Saratoga County history. Contributing authors include familiar names of local historians, as well as many regional “history buffs.” Readers will be impressed with the research and charmed by the narratives.
To accompany the book’s launch, the History Center has planned two in-person events: Saturday, October 23, 2-5 p.m. at Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa; and Sunday, November 7, 2-4 p.m. at Historic Grooms Tavern in Clifton Park. The public will be able to meet contributing authors and the editorial team, purchase copies of the book, and
have their editions signed by the historians. The volume will make an excellent holiday gift! For more information, or to pre-order books, go to https://brooksidemuseum.org or email Jim Richmond of the Saratoga County History Roundtable: saratogacohistoryroundtable@gmail.com.
