What do you give an avid gardener? More land for crops, of course. In 2011, Casey Holzworth’s Christmas gift to his wife, Kelly Holzworth, was a lease on farmland along Wing Road in Greenfield. At the time, the couple lived on a small lot in Saratoga Springs. The gift provided Kelly with more room for her passion - growing vegetables. The couple later bought 15 acres along Wing Road and built a house on the property. Kelly currently has a half-acre under cultivation, filled with lush rows of potatoes, beans, onions, sweet potatoes, leafy greens, squash, root vegetables, garlic, asparagus, hops and more, all raised organically. “I love to cook,” Kelly said. “I love fresh ingredients and if you grow them yourself, you can walk outside and pick anything you want.”

Kelly Holzworth stands in her garden at her home on Tuesday, July 17, 2018, in Greenfield Center, N.Y.

academic testing? That’s one of the issues underlying an unusual lawsuit in which a group of parent-activists are contesting a recent personnel change, described by the board in court papers as a shift in policy and a realignment of resources. It’s also a choice that other districts may have to face given the demands being placed on schools. On the one hand, students must take mandatory exams in grades three through eight and

in high school; the scores are closely watched and can have serious impact if they fall too low. At the same time, advocates are drawing increased attention to mental health needs. This fall, for instance, schools in New York will have to include mental health education as part of their health curriculum. This is happening as many small upstate districts like 800-student Lake George are grappling with declining enroll-

The complaint -- first reported in the Glens Falls Post Star -- was filed in state Supreme Court in Warren County but moved to Saratoga County because the judge in the case had a conflict. “We’re looking for an injunction to halt the decision,” said plaintiff Stacie Dunn, who serves on an advisory committee to the Lake Please see SCHOOL 12

A TROPICAL LOOK FOR NORTHERN GARDENS

All around town I see that the winter hardy members of the hibiscus are putting on their show. Their flower closely resembles that of the tropical hibiscus that is so popular in the tropics. It is the state flower of Hawaii. The tall (up to 10’) woody shrub that we see blooming around the area right now is althea also called Rose of Sharon. It seems that althea is gaining in popularity lately. I greatly admire the single flowTropical Hibiscus. ering varieties that I’m starting to see more of. These single flowering altheas weren’t widely available when I planted my hedge 10 years ago or I would have surely opted for one of those. Rose of Sharon is available in a wide range of colors but tend toward the reds and lavenders. There are even varieties that have a bi-colored flower and there’s a nice white that I’ve seen as well. The flowers are a bit smaller than those of the tropical hibiscus but you can see the resemblance. While the althea is a woody shrub, there’s another Althea or Rose of Sharon. hardy hibiscus, the mallow hibiscus that is perennial in nature (it dies to the ground in winter). Like althea or Rose of Sharon, the mallow hibiscus is a relative of the tropical hibiscus although the flowers are much larger. The showy mallow hibiscus will grow from the ground to a height of 4’ to 6’ during each growing season. Mallow hibiscus flowers range in color from white to deep purple and encompass every shade of pink in between. As if this weren’t enough, the flowers can be as large as a dinner plate! I know you’ve seen these around town since they are Mallow Hibiscus. in flower right now. A lot of folks don’t realize that this plant is hardy in our area and will easily survive over winter to return larger and showier each year. Each of the giant flowers that a mallow hibiscus produces will only remain open for one day. Fortunately, they produce plenty of buds so the show goes on for at least a couple of weeks and even longer for a wellestablished clump. You can see how large Mallow Hibiscus flowers are by using my face for compariMallow Hibiscus flowers are huge. son...this is the largest flower we can grow this far north...the tropics have nothing on us! If you plant either of these northern members of the hibiscus family, you’ll need to be patient in spring. Neither the woody shrub althea nor the perennial mallow hibiscus will show any sign of life until spring is well under way. I usually see no sign of life from either in my yard until the lilacs are in bloom. That’s when the first leaves appear on my althea and the mallow hibiscus is just poking a shoot up from the soil. They are amazing plants and easily deserve a place in your garden. Thanks for the read.

GARDENS

CONTINUED FROM 3

CONTINUED FROM 3

The Holzworths have a sizable garden now, but Kelly proved you can grow vegetables on a tiny city lot. Before moving to Greenfield, she grew tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, herbs and lettuce on a tenth of an acre -- 4,356 square feet -- that was mostly taken up by her house. There’s something visceral and instinctive about working down in the dirt, placing a fragile seedling in the ground and then tending it. Feeding the masses involves machines necessary for efficiency, but growing vegetables on a small scale is a personal experience. And there’s nothing quite like the triumph of succeeding, plucking your own tomato from the plant and popping it in your mouth, still warm from the sun. Kelly says she learned to make weeding an ongoing thing, rather than saving it up for a day of labor. She also learned by trial and error what would grow well. Corn was a hassle, so she stopped growing it. She grows only what her family will eat. She’s not growing crops to sell, and there’s no sense in laboring over a vegetable no one likes. The garden is fenced with chicken wire and 60-pound fishing line. The deer come at dusk, Casey says. They bump into the fishing line because they can’t see it, and then run off because it scares them. “It works until midwinter, when they don’t care anymore and push right through it,” he says. Back in Saratoga Springs, Nancy Roberts has an urban garden her friends jokingly refer to as a kibbutz, the Hebrew word for communal farm. Roberts has been gardening all her life. As a child in Utica, she saved her allowance to spend on plants she found in the seed catalog. Like Kelly Holzworth, she put seeds in the dirt even when she didn’t have much land. Roberts and her husband, John, moved to MacArthur Street in 2004. Arctic kiwis were the first thing she planted. A male and female plant grow on each side of a trellis, mingling and creating a fruit that, unlike its fuzzy cousins from New Zealand, doesn’t need to be peeled. Pawpaw trees stand in another corner of the front yard. The fruit tastes like a banana crossed with a mango, Roberts says, and has the consistency of banana custard.

(PAUL BUCKOWSKI/TIMES UNION)

Nancy Roberts holds a basket of garlic from her garden at her home on Monday, July 16, 2018, in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

They were President George Washington’s favorite fruit, Roberts says. Dark red dahlia flowers bloom in the middle of the yard, grown from tubers produced by a plant that grew on Roberts’ mother’s property. There’s lettuce growing around it; Roberts plants the vegetable here and there among the flowers and next to other plants where the sun will find it. Roberts is one of six children. Her parents had a vegetable garden because it helped feed the family. She remembers her Welsh grandfather’s tomatoes, and the smell of peaches in the heat of the summer during canning season. Roberts doesn’t use chemical fertilizers, instead using compost for fertilizer and grass clippings for mulch. She doesn’t worry about having a perfect lawn. She uses most of the lot for crops. Grape vines drape a side fence, and asparagus - its yield over for the year - stretches its gauzy leaves toward the sun next to Roberts’ backyard gazebo. There is also basil, red kale, pear trees, figs, thornless blackberries, a nectarine tree, tomatoes and celery. Roberts uses recipes from “The Victory Garden Cookbook.” “You have a garden because you need it, and then, when you have a little more money and you don’t need the garden as much, you do it because you love it,” she says. lhornbeck@timesunion.com - 518-4545352 - @leighhornbeck by Jeff Scherer

George school board. The suit seeks a reversal of the board’s decision during the last school year to cut the position of junior-senior high school vice principal Cody Conley and replace it with a new position, interim director of curriculum. They hired retired Fort Edward Superintendent Jeffery Ziegler to fill that spot for a year at a salary of $90,000. “We want the court to maintain the status quo or put back in place the status quo,” said Gregory Teresi, the lawyer who is representing the plaintiffs free of charge. He and Dunn noted that Conley has since found a new job in the Saratoga Springs school district, but their larger point is they believe a vice principal focusing on social issues is needed. “We live in a society today where mental health, drug abuse and shootings have risen to a level of concern,” said Teresi. “These kids need to protected, and the school district has never given us an answer.” Teresi also believes the board and Superintendent Lynne Rutnik violated the state Open Meetings law by discussing the personnel changes in private. The change came without any open board discussion, despite the work of the advisory council that Dunn and others served on, he said. “Respondents acted arbitrarily and capriciously when they voted to create the interim curriculum position and eliminate the assistant principal position,” the lawsuit alleges. Dunn added that Lake George’s junior-senior high school has in the past had problems with bullying, drug abuse and other social ills. That’s why they were so dismayed to hear that Conley’s job had been eliminated. Others agreed. “I have observed the assistant principal reaching out to those students who are most likely to be lost in the cracks, those students who are potential targets of bullies, those students who are vulnerable to choosing drugs or other risky behaviors; students who need someone reaching out to them, someone in a position of authority paying attention

to them as a unique individual,” said another litigant, Patricia Dow, in an affidavit accompanying the legal action. Still, not everyone is convinced that dealing with social issues should be the school’s priority. “There is an opioid crisis in the U.S.A. and kids are smoking? I don’t really see that as a school issue to be solved,” wrote Marc Mularz, a Lake George school board member and science teacher in the nearby Warrensburg district, in an email to Dunn over the winter. “We are in the education business, and while we certainly try to help our kids make wise decisions, the argument that students are going to be vaping and firing down percocets because Mr. Conley is no longer there is a bit specious to me,” Mularz added. In an email, Rutnik said the district is looking at a number of ways to improve safety and emotional support for students. Among those: working with local mental health organizations; establishing a “See Something, Say Something” tip line; and hiring an “armed, trained individual for each building, who will become part of school culture and co-chair Safety Committee.” Officials also are studying ways to better “harden” the school facilities. Dunn, who had two children go through the district, fears that without someone like Conley focusing on social issues, the district could fall back into a pattern they had years ago when students suffered from rampant bullying. “When you remove the person who is the main support for a lot of kids, especially kids who are struggling ... those type of things become more likely,” Dunn said. Rutnik, who noted that the district’s enrollment has been declining, said another unexpected retirement may allow for another hire the district plans to discuss during the board’s August meeting. “My hope is that everyone can put aside their disagreements, heal, and move forward for the benefit of the students we serve,” said Rutnik. rkarlin@timesunion.com 518 454 5758 @RickKarlinTU

Summer Meals Corinth Elementary School is pleased to host the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program this year, offering free lunches to all children and teens throughout the summer. The program is organized locally by CAPTAIN Community Human Services. It is open to all, with no registration required. We invite all ages 18 and younger to visit the elementary school between 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. weekdays for a free lunch. Corinth Backpack Program Corinth High School in partnership with the Foodbank of Northeastern NY distributed 1,500 food bags (over 9,000 meals) over the 2017-18 school year. In order to continue this amazing work, the Corinth Backpack Program is in need of a new volunteer driver to pick up food twice a month from South Glens Falls and bring it to Corinth. A small truck is really helpful, but an SUV could probably fit all of the food. Previously, the pick up day has been on Thursday, however, accommodations could be made for a different day. For more information please contact Kerry Giumarra at giumarrak@ corinthcsd.org. Corinth Capital Project Update The Corinth Board of Education has awarded the bids for Phase 2 of the capital project. Bids for Phase 2 of the project were opened on Thursday, June 28. Phase 2 includes the replacement of a boiler and construction of a new storage building at Corinth Elementary. The new construction of the storage building is set to begin in the fall while the boiler replacement will take place next summer. Additionally, work on the new bus garage is expected to begin in the next month or so. Corinth Athletic Fields Cleveland Brothers will be putting down a grub control this Friday, August 3 at Corinth Central School District. This will include all athletics fields, as well as, the entire school property. The fields will have to remain unoccupied until Monday, August 6.
