Refugee Welcome Center Volunteers Needed
ALBANY - The Refugee Welcome Center, located at 104 Ontario St., Albany, is in need of volunteers for our playgroup. During our English classes for refugees and immigrants, we offer a playgroup for preschoolers while their mothers learn English. This would be a 2-4 hour/ week commitment. We have 7-9 children in the playgroup and have 3 volunteers for each class. Class days/ times are Tuesdays, Wednesday, and Thursdays from 9:30-11:00 and 11:30-1:00. Did You Receive an IRS Notice About Changes to Your Tax Return? CAPITAL DISTRICT The IRS has been sending “math error” notices to taxpayers. The notices list changes the IRS has made to the amount the taxpayers owe in tax or how much they will receive as a refund. If you receive this type of notice, it does not necessarily mean there was a math or computational error on your return. There are time limits to act if you think the notice is incorrect. So far this year, the IRS has sent about 11 million math error notices. This is many times more than in past years. The IRS sent most of these notices to taxpayers who filed a return seeking the Recovery Rebate Credit. Taxpayers claimed this Credit on their tax return if they did not receive the full amount of the Covid-19 economic stimulus payments they believed they were entitled to. The IRS used these notices to advise taxpayers that it believed they were wrong and that all or part of their Recovery Rebate Credit was not allowed. If you receive a math error notice and do not agree with it, you have sixty days from the date on the notice to contact the IRS and let them know you disagree. The phone number to contact the IRS is provided in the notice. There are still limited things you can do even if you miss the deadline. Some math error notices the IRS sent taxpayers in early 2021 did not have any information about the sixty-day deadline. The IRS is therefore correcting that problem by issuing new math error notices that give the taxpayer a new sixty-day period to object. Please be aware that the notices may not say “math error” on them. If you have questions
about this or other income tax issues, the Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York’s Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) may be able to help. The Clinic’s services are free of charge. You can call the LASNNY Legal Line at (833) 628-0087 and ask for our LITC. The Clinic does not generally provide tax preparation services.

Merriman and Pfister’s Marketplace DELMAR - Merriman and Pfister’s Marketplace, in Delmar, is hosting local artist, Lynda Spielman, for a temporary Pop-Up Show and Sale. The show runs through October 1. Lynda Spielman is an established watercolor painter and instructor. She is the current President of the Bethlehem Art Association. Lynda has studied privately, and with notable artists at the Hudson Valley Art Workshops and at the National Art League in Douglaston, NY. Her work has been recognized in many shows and her artwork is owned by private collectors, locally and internationally. Her art reflects her mature use of watercolor skills and traditional techniques, sometimes with the exciting addition of rice paper or ink. She also
works in acrylics on paper, often attaching them to a wood panel support. Lynda claims her art has always been a journey to “expressive-ness.” Her subjects are also diverse, ranging from landscapes, to florals, horses, musicians or abstracts. As a committed lifelong learner, she has now added journaling to her portfolio. This exhibit is presented as “An Art Journey,” and features her recent “virtual travels,” which are small works of “ink and blobs.” Lynda has a Ph.D. degree in history and retired from a career as an international Human Resources professional and academic. Colonie OKs sellers, but bans on-site use Legislation subject to referendum in 30 days

COLONIE - The Town Board unanimously voted to ban on-site marijuana consumption venues last week. The vote came nearly two months after the board proposed legislation that would ban recreational marijuana from being used on-site at any retail locations in town. The proposed optout in Colonie would allow marijuana retailers, but ban any on-premises use of the products. “The town will be allowing marijuana growers to conduct business in the town, and we will be allowing retail sales to take place,” town Attorney Mike Maguilli said during the Town
Board meeting. “What it will prohibit is on-site consumption premises within the town.” At the moment, Colonie appears to be among the first municipalities in the Capital Region to partially or fully opt out of the newly legalized recreational marijuana industry. However, other local municipalities have begun exploring opting out by the Dec. 31 deadline. Ballston was expected to vote on an on-site use opt-out soon. Guilderland has set a public hearing to discuss a full or partial opt-out on Sept. 21. Colonie’s legislation will be subject to a referendum in 30 days. But a July public hearing only drew two residents, who asked questions about the state’s legalization of recreational marijuana, but otherwise did not voice strong opinions in favor of or against the local legisla-
tion. At July’s Town Board meeting, Supervisor Paula Mahan said the town is attempting to take precautions and aid law enforcement in preventing driving under the influence of marijuana. However, advocates said data shows such concerns about usage increase and road safety haven’t held merit in other states that have legalized recreational marijuana. “This is one of those things where people think legalization will suddenly flip a switch and there will be a dramatic change in usage,” Melissa Moore, state director of the Drug Policy Alliance, told the Times Union in July. “That simply isn’t what panned out in other states.”
Historic burial vault rededicated Ceremony celebrates Slingerland family site’s renovation ByLINE: LARRY RULISON
BETHLEHEM - Just four years ago, the historic Slingerland family burial vault built here in the middle of the 19th century was in shambles. Years of neglect and battles over who exactly owned the tomb that sits just off New Scotland Road left it looking more like a pile of rubble desecrated by vandals than a sacred site holding the remains of perhaps one of the most important families in Albany County history. But last week, members of the Slingerland family, neighbors and town and county officials gathered at the burial site to celebrate its dramatic reconstruction -- a $109,000 project -- almost all of which has
been covered by many donors, government grants and businesses. The town of Bethlehem’s highway department also worked on the project. “I’m in awe of the hard work and the successful conclusion of all of these efforts,” Town Supervisor David VanLuven said. “The Slingerland family has left an indelible mark on our town and our history.” The Rev. Chris Vande Bunte, the senior pastor at Delmar Reformed Church, where some of the Slingerland family worshipped, rededicated the vault by reciting
Psalm 121 from the Bible. “I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come?” Vande Bunte read from the passage. “My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and Earth.” The Slingerland family started with a Dutch trader named Teunis Slingerland, who came to Albany around 1650 and purchased 10,000 acres along Onesquethaw Creek in present-day New Scotland, Bethlehem and the town of Coeymans from Native Americans. The hamlet where the family settled would eventually be called Slingerlands. The most famous of his descendents was John I. Slingerland, an abolitionist congressman, and his brother William Henry, Slingerland’s first postmaster. The two brothers are both buried in the vault. 2022 school year. The historic house museum, sometimes known as The Yellow House on the Hill, tells a story of America through the lives and experiences of one Albany household. Built in 1787 for Philip and Maria Van Rensselaer, Cherry Hill was lived in until 1963 by extended family, people who were enslaved, descendants, and servants—who left artifacts, documents, and stories behind. The museum collection includes 70,000 artifacts and manuscripts, all of which were accumulated by the Cherry Hill household over the course of five generations and nearly 200 years. History Is Now will meet weekly after school from November 2021 through June 2022. Participants will examine the lives of people at Cherry Hill and connect stories from the past to their present day lives and shared experiences. During the 2021-2022 school year, participants will receive volunteer hours for training; the museum is happy to work with schools to accommodate high school volunteer service requirements. Crossroads Center for Children Announces 2021 “Dare to Be Different Gala” to be Held on October 23 CAPITAL DISTRICT – Tickets are now on sale for Crossroads Center for Children’s 2021, “Dare to Be Different Gala, a night of celebration in support of Crossroads programs for children in the Capital District (or Northeastern New York). This year’s Gala will take place on Saturday, October 23, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Terrace at Waters Edge in Glenville. Each year at the Gala, Crossroads Center for Children chooses to honor someone with the “Connecting the Community Award” in gratitude for their help over the past year, which is always a
meaningful and challenging review, as the center truly appreciates the contribution of everyone in the Crossroads community. This year, both Capital District Physicians Health Plan, (CDPHP) and the CAP COM Community Foundation were chosen. “This year, though, we have two honorees, and both were easy selections for their assistance not only to Crossroads but to others in our community” said Young. Around that time, a woman named Sue Virgilio from Niskayuna had learned after taking a DNA test through Ancestry.com that she was the great-great-great granddaughter of John I. Slingerland. COPS, COURT AND FIRE CALLS Man faces drug and weapon charges ALBANY -- A 29-yearold city man was arrested Thursday on Sherman Street while holding cocaine in both of his hands and carrying a bag with a 9mm pistol in it, city police said Friday. The man was arrested at 10:45 a.m. Thursday in the 200 Block of Sherman Street between Robin Street and North Lake Avenue. The arrest was made following an investigation by detectives from the Albany Police Department's Community Response Unit, police said in a news release. He was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and seventh-degree possession of a controlled substance. The man was also arrested on an Albany City

Teen charged in July gunfire case ALBANY -- An 18-yearold city man was charged Friday in connection with a shots fired incident in July on Orange Street, police said. The man was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon related to a report of shots fired at 11:40 p.m. July 26 in the vicinity of Orange and Robin streets. Two shot within hours of each other ALBANY -- A man was being treated for a gunshot wound to the leg Friday morning, police said. Staff at Albany Medical Center Hospital called police at 2:20 a.m. after a 46-year-old victim arrived with a gunshot wound to the leg. Police said they determined the man was shot while he was on Quail Street between Bradford and West streets. His injuries are not considered life-threatening. The shooting happened just hours after another man was shot in the leg Thursday night. Officers found a 53-year-old man wounded at 8:30 p.m. in the vicinity of Sherman and Robin streets. May shots fired case leads to arrest ALBANY -- A 26-yearold city man has been charged in a shots fired incident that occurred in May on Grand street, police said Friday.
