New Salem Volunteer Dept. Auxiliary DriveThrough Holiday Event

VOORHEESVILLE This year, rather than our annual Teddy Bear Tea, the New Salem Volunteer Dept. Auxiliary is hosting a drivethrough “COVID Cocoa Christmas with Santa and Mrs. Claus” on Sunday, Dec. 12, beginning at 1:00 p.m. As in past years, reservations are required and prepaid. Please call 518-650-7636 by Nov. 28. The cost is $10 per child. When reservations are made, you will be given an approximate time to arrive to avoid wait times. You will drive in the back parking lot into the bay of the firehouse, at 694 New Salem Road, Route 85A, and out through the front slowly and in single file while enjoying the atmosphere created for you and yours. The event will be held snow or shine. Masks are required by all. Roll your windows down and everyone is to stay in their cars. This year, each child will receive an ornament, a fun edible gift of a chocolate treat that can be put into warm milk to be prepared at home for hot cocoa and of course, our literacy gift of a Christmas book. We sincerely hope you will bring the children to experience another, although scaled down for this year, magical time with Santa and Mrs. Claus. The auxiliary promises to warm the children’s and your heart. Santa and Mrs. Claus are looking forward to seeing and waving to you all.

Plug Power to build manufacturing complex Slingerlands’ Vista tech campus proposed site for project that would employ nearly 700 people ByLINE: LARRY RULISON

BETHLEHEM - Fuel cell maker Plug Power wants to build a 350,000-squarefoot building that would include a fuel cell assembly plant, a warehouse and offices at the Vista Technology Campus in Slingerlands that would employ nearly 700 people. Columbia Development, the Albany real estate development firm that created the tech park more than a decade ago and still owns 214 acres, has submitted an application to the town Planning Board to build the large manufacturing complex on 26 acres.

Although Columbia’s application did not name the company behind the project, Plug Power confirmed Monday afternoon that it had chosen Vista for a new manufacturing facility that would make the company’s GenDrive fuel cells that are currently used in forklift trucks and other vehicles. “Plug Power is in the process of receiving approvals for a new building construction on the Vista (tech park) in Slingerlands,” the Latham company said in a statement provided to the Times Union. “The building will support an expansion of Plug’s GenDrive manufacturing.” The building would be completed next year, the company said. Plug Power’s headquarters would remain on Albany Please see EXPAND 13

Home Solutions

The Guide to Your Best Lived Home.

Deck the halls with DIY decor Decorating is one of the joys of the holiday season. Families often decorate together, and such traditions may include dressing the Christmas tree and hanging holiday lights around the house. A day spent making homemade ornaments is another great way to decorate and spend quality time together as a family during the holiday season. Though families can let their imaginations run wild when making ornaments at home, the following are some great starting points that can serve as springboards for holiday crafting sessions. • Snowmen: The holiday season simply wouldn’t be the same without snowmen. Homemade snowmen can be made out of ping pong balls, which are the ideal size when making ornaments for the Christmas tree. Those who want to go a little bigger can glue wiffle balls or large polystyrene balls together or create their own papier mâché snowmen to display on mantles or on console tables in a foyer or hallway. • Santa Claus: Another staple of holiday decor, Santa Claus has inspired many a DIY holiday ornament over the years. A paper plate Santa Claus with a cotton ball beard glued on can make for a fun Christmas craft, especially for young children who can’t wait for the big guy to

appear on Christmas Eve. • Penguins: Though they might not have a direct link to the holiday season, penguins evoke feelings of cold weather, making them an ideal addition to holiday decor schemes. Make your own penguin family using polystyrene craft balls in assorted sizes and then hang them on the tree or place them around the house. • Reindeer: Santa would not be able to get the job done each Christmas Eve without his trustworthy team of reindeer. Popsicle stick reindeer projects can be fun for kids of all ages and a great way for youngsters to recognize the efforts of Dasher, Dancer, Comet, Cupid, and, of course, Rudolph, among others. • Cookie cutters: Family baking sessions are a holiday tradition for millions of people. Though that often leads to batches upon batches of tasty cookies, it also means families tend to have a surplus of holiday cookie cutters around the house. Surplus cookie cutters tend to be discarded or relegated to the miscellaneous items drawer in kitchens, but a more awe-inspiring fate can await them. A coat of paint, some glitter and a little bit of string or twine is all families need to transform their extra cookie cutters into colorful tree ornaments. Holiday decorating sessions can be made even more fun when families take time to craft some DIY decorations together.

Shaker Road in Latham where it currently assembles fuel cells. The project is scheduled to be presented to the Bethlehem Planning Board Tuesday night. It appears that Plug Power may have already lined up potential government subsidies for the constriction project. Its application with the town says that Empire State Development, the state’s economic development arm, may extend financial incentives, and NYSERDA, the state’s renewable energy agency, is also involved. The Bethlehem Industrial Development Agency could also be approached for tax breaks. Plug Power makes fuel cells that run on hydrogen, which emit only water vapor and warm air when they operate. With billions of dollars in cash, the company has been extremely aggressive acquiring firms and building new facilities in order to grab market share as hydrogen becomes an increasingly important fuel

source as the world looks to move away from fossil fuels like oil and gas. Plug Power, which is already the largest consumer of hydrogen in North America, has also been building so-called green hydrogen manufacturing plants that will make hydrogen out of water using only electricity made from renewable sources. Today, most hydrogen is made from methane. The Plug Power project would also bring the first-ever technology tenant to the tech park. A local solar installation firm, Monolith Solar, was supposed to be the first tech tenant at the park before its plans for a $5 million headquarters at Vista fell through in 2019 after financial woes. A steel frame of the unfinished Monolith building still stands at Vista behind the ShopRite supermarket, one of the many Vista tenants along with several banks, restaurants and medical offices, that were intended to serve the tech companies expected to locate there. The new project would be built in the back of the tech park where the roundabout is located, just past the old Monolith site.

Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger said in a written statement announcing the consolidation. “Catholic Central School is a shining example of what we can do when we think outside the box and create a vision for something new, something necessary, something that offers incredible possibilities for local Catholic students and their families. The fact that this new regional school will be linked physically and spiritually to the parish further solidifies the critical role of faith in this endeavor,” the bishop continued. The merger marks the creation of the first regional school that will serve a multicounty area, attracting students from more than 20 public school districts. Placing the school at St. Ambrose will expand the area that can rely on the districts to provide free bus transportation for students attending the school. “We’re looking more globally,” Diocesan School Superintendent Giovanni Virgiglio said about expanding the area served and using its central location near Northway Exit 6 and routes 7 and 9. Catholic Central was traditionally fed by the parochial schools in the city of Troy serving as a regional high school on a very localized basis. As Catholics have moved into the suburbs over the decades from the Capital Region’s core cities, the diocese has closed parishes and schools. St. Ambrose School currently has 150 students for prekindergarten through and risks. We will explore hibernation on a short hike and learn what hibernation means and which animals of the Pine Bush hibernate. Suitable for ages under 6 with caregivers. Reservation required. COPS, COURT AND FIRE CALLS Truck damages garage in Albany Warehouse District ALBANY -- A truck struck a building in the Warehouse District Tuesday, causing part of its facade to collapse. Albany police said a truck owned by McCarthy Tire Service was moving tires in and out of the side of the building located at 980 Broadway St., when the driver forgot to put the boom down and hit the overhead of the garage on its way in. Footage shows bricks from the building facade scattered across the ground, and part of the overhang detached from the building. The extent of damage to the building's structure was not immediately known. Rick LaJoy, director of the city Department of Buildings and Regulatory Compliance, said it is not a building collapse and there is no emergency apparatus. A private engineer is assessing the extent of damage to the building.

Victim of biking collision was 59-year-old of Schenectady SCHENECTADY -Police said Monday night that the man killed while riding his bicycle Saturday afternoon near Veterans Park was Elton Garvey, 59, of Schenectady. Schenectady police said at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday Garvey was riding in the area of State and Lafayette streets when he was hit. The car that struck him was driving east on State Street, and left the scene. However, police said they located the driver, and the person is cooperating with the investigation. Garvey was taken to Ellis Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Schenectady police's traffic division is investigating the

fatal crash.

Watervliet teen charged with attempted murder in Albany ALBANY -- A Watervliet teen is facing an attempted murder charge and recovering from a gunshot wound after he allegedly shot a 17-year-old in the city before accidentally shooting himself in the leg, police said. Albany police were called around 7:45 p.m. to North Allen Street on Saturday for a reported shooting. When they arrived they found a 16-year-old with a gunshot wound to his leg. Shortly after that, a 17-year-old was found inside a nearby home with gunshot wounds to his leg and back. Police said they believe the younger teen shot the older teen as part of a dispute. The 16-year-old was also charged with criminal possession of a weapon. His name was not released due to his age. Both teens were taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital. Police said their injuries are not life-threatening. Police also charged a 36-year-old man in connection with the incident. The man allegedly took evidence from the shooting and put it in another apartment to prevent police from finding it. He was charged with tampering with evidence and arraigned in city criminal court.

Telephone solicitation warning issued by police GUILDERLAND -Town police said Tuesday a phone solicitation has been targeting Guilderland residents. Police said that a caller, who claims to be "Media All Stars," has been contacting residents asking for donations for the school

district's athletics program. The Guilderland Central School District does not fundraise through the company, police said.

Man arrested after alleged kidnapping A man who North police Greenbush say kidnapped a woman last month at gunpoint and drove her around — during which time a hidden passenger emerged and also aimed a gun at her — was arrested Thursday in Colonie, police said. The 32-year-old Rensselaer man was apprehended after local, state and federal authorities investigated the Oct. 23 incident, North Greenbush Police Chief David M. Keevern said. A woman told police the armed suspect and another man kidnapped her in the middle of the night, Keevern said in a news release. The woman knew the suspect and agreed to get into his car. At some point, the second person popped up from the back seat with a gun, Keevern said. She was able to escape when she saw police cars parked in a parking lot. The two fled; the woman was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released from a hospital. The accomplice was arrested within days of the incident, Keevern said, but he is a youth so no information about him is being released. The U.S. Marshals Service found the driver in Colonie. He was charged with kidnapping, robbery, unlawful imprisonment, menacing, criminal mischief and petit larceny, arraigned and jailed without bail, due back in town court at a later date. The suspect has an extensive criminal history and is wanted by the state parole department, Keevern said. His intent that evening is unknown, the chief said. The investigation is continuing and further charges are possible, he said.

Nacre Dance Group to Present Charles Weidman’s “Christmas Oratorio” SARATOGA SPRINGS - Nacre Dance Company presents modern dance pioneer Charles Weidman’s “Christmas Oratorio” at The Universal Preser-

vation Hall in Saratoga Springs on Sunday, December 12th at 1pm and 4pm. Nacre’s production is based on Charles Weidman’s later version of “Christmas Oratorio”, which opened in New York City in 1961 to wide critical acclaim, and has remained a much-loved classic work of modern dance. This historic work tells the story of the Nativity through modern dance. In this rendition of the work, Weidman focuses on feelings and emotions such as joy, compassion and friendship in this dance of rejoicing. Dancers move in wonderment and reverence and their hands are raised in exultation. Sensitive portrayals of biblical figures and Bach’s passionate music combine to make this a moving and unforgettable experience. Only a select few dance companies in the world have performed the “Christmas Oratorio” – Our performance is a unique opportunity to see this beautiful and rarely produced work of art!
