Spa City marketing firm tests profitability of NFTs Digital pieces of unique artwork have potential to be lucrative, creators say By SHAYLA COLON

Saratoga County 4-H RoBo Vines Robotics Advancing to World Championship SARATOGA COUNTY - On March 6th, Saratoga County 4-H’s Robovines Robotics team did it again!! The Robovines won the FTC (FIRST Tech Challenge) Excelsior Region Championship. Starting out 4th in the semi-finals, they were able to defeat both the 1st and 2nd seed alliances to become the Winning Alliance Captain. This victory earns them the honor to move on to the FIRST Championship being held in Houston, Texas happening April 20 - 23, 2022. The RoBovines team is made up of six 4-H members from 3 different school districts: Henry LaBarge and Owen Fleury, Ballston Spa; Ethan Stone and Corin Gordon, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake; and Norah Hoke and Ethan Thomas, Saratoga Springs. The youth range from 6th to 10th grade. Four of them are rookies on the team. “This is unprecedented for Saratoga County. We are so excited for this group and the opportunity World’s presents” says Greg Stevens, 4-H Issue Leader. In addition to winning the robot game, The Robovines won 3rd Place

SARATOGA SPRINGS - The opportunity to dive into the NFT business was too attractive to pass up, and now Chris Thompson is all in, consumed by the latest digital moneymaking trend. NFT stands for non-fungible token. An NFT is typically a digital piece of unique artwork, often cartoon-like, that purchasers can buy online. Rather than a painting or sculpture, though, the original exists solely online as a unit of data that the owner keeps on a blockchain — a digital ledger that tracks and stores records of transactions in cyberspace. An NFT has a limited number of versions, analogous to limited print editions of an art piece. Thompson, who operates the Branded AF marketing company, is carving out a niche in helping the creators of NFTs bring their artwork to the virtual marketplace. “We’re signing three to five clients a month right now for (NFT) projects,” the managing partner said. “I’m doing five to 12 business development calls per day ... including Saturdays sometimes. And it doesn’t seem to be slowing down.” In the past year, Thompson has found more and

more NFT creators who want him to handle their websites and other online functions. While Thompson said Branded AF has been profitable without the NFT action, the serial entrepreneur believed the virtual tokens were too enticing an opportunity to forgo. Client inquiries have grown so much he had to bring on a partner to shoulder some of the work. “There’s no shortage of creativity when it comes to clients and what they want to do (with NFTs),” Thompson said. Many NFT artists don’t want to worry about managing the technical aspects of their business, which is why they rely on firms like Branded AF. “They just will focus on the dream, the vision, the art and the creation of it,” Thompson explained. He likened NFT creation to a startup. Branded AF doesn’t create art pieces for clients but launches their presence in a blockchain. After coding a script or software code that duplicates the artwork into a series of 10,000 pieces maximum, Branded AF uploads the collection to a distributed blockchain with a contract connecting buyers to the network to facilitate the purchase and subsequent validation process. When a person buys an NFT, the investment needs to be proofed through a special computer code, or key, to authenti-

cate the ownership. A single launch can take up to about a month to complete; however, Branded AF is presently turning over four to six launches a month and yielding solid revenue from it in return, according to the firm. Branded AF charges a base fee for its services on NFT projects and receives a percentage of the client’s primary sales, usually between 20 and 30 percent. For example, a client may offer a piece of NFT art for sale priced at half an Ethereum, a form of digital currency similar to Bitcoin. Ethereum was worth approximately $2,600 as of Thursday afternoon. If the artist sells 1,000 pieces, he stands to make $260,000, based on the Ethereum rate. Thompson said NFTs have doubled, if not tripled his company’s profits in 2021. He declined to say how much he is making from his work with NFTs but said he expects greater growth this year. Yet, Node40 co-founder Perry Woodin doesn’t think NFTs are very profitable for everyone. Node40 is an Albany-based cryptocurrency accounting and tax firm providing users with independent block-chain audits. From his standpoint, NFT-makers profit from the business but those who are trading them often don’t because there’s no liquidity backing the tokens. Woodin said to think about NFTs as physical

artwork. And the price of cryptocurrency can vary widely on a given day. That $2,600 Ethereum token could go up or it could drop drastically. “You have to find a buyer that appreciates that work of art and then you have to agree upon a price,” he said. “So, that’s very different from traditional equities or even traditional cryptocurrencies.” “It’s a great business. It’s a lot of fun, (but) it’s not for the faint of heart. When (the) NFT bubble pops and goes away, which it will someday ... I have the other side of the business, which is just steady.” “ Chris Thompson So-called “gas prices” — trading fees on the network — also make NFTbuying expensive, which can stymie buyers from trading. Thompson agreed. He said the fees can be anywhere from $75 to $150 per transaction in addition to the token’s cost. The NFT connoisseur buys them thinking he’ll sell the art, but sometimes never does. “That’s prohibitively expensive for the majority of people,” he emphasized. “For collectors like myself, it’s the cost of doing business.” Moreover, the intrinsic artistic quality of most

NFTs isn’t very high, according to Woodin. Many look like crude digital cartoons, but what drives the market is their advertising and promise of exclusivity. “It’s really these personalities who can talk up what they’re doing, and you want to be connected with them,” Woodin said. Recently an NFT of an image of Paul McCartney’s handwritten notes for “Hey Jude” sold for more than $76,000. Since Thompson’s whole operation is hinged on marketing, he may find himself on the lucrative end of the NFT business. But, even he acknowledged that an NFT’s popularity heavily depends on how it is presented to the world. Thompson is launching

Luther Forest project pulled Scannell blames zoning hurdle for halting potential Amazon warehouse plan By LARRY RULISON

MALTA - Scannell Properties is giving up on its attempt to develop land at the Luther Forest Technology Campus in Saratoga County that was eyed as a potential location for an Amazon warehouse. Scannell’s plan faced significant obstacles because the company, Please see 4-H 8 based in Indiana, needed the town to modify the zoning regulations governing the tech park, which is home to the headquarters for chipmaker GlobalFoundries and its Fab 8 factory. Although GlobalFoundries is the only Any Price, Area or Condition company to ever locate at the 1,400-acre FAST, FAIR OFFERS Luther Forest tech park, there has been reluctance from the town about changing the zoning for Luther Forest at a P.O. of dollars in state infrastructure support to build out the campus as a semiconductor-focused property that would eventually be home to several chip factories, potentially built by several companies. Scannell had hoped that some of the land could have been set aside for other types of industries, although it never revealed its plans. The company is well known in the Capital Region and elsewhere for developing sites for Amazon, including an Amazon warehouse built in Schodack. Scannell has an option agreement to buy the Stadium Golf Club, which straddles Schenectady and Rotterdam. The company says it has no firm plans for the land but people living in the mostly residential area have raised concerns about the traffic a major project could bring. Scannell has been typically very guarded about its projects, especially those for Amazon due to the online retailer’s desire for secrecy. Scannell had an option to buy nearly 250 acres at the Luther Forest site, but decided to walk away recently due to the existing zoning at Luther Forest, which requires companies at the park to make certain disclosures to the town if they are located there. Peter Struzzi, a broker and executive managing director with Pyramid Brokerage Co., the company that was marketing the site for Scannell, said none of the companies he talked to were comfortable with the zoning for Luther Forest, which sets strict controls on tractor-trailer traffic and requires “economic and environmental audits” of tenants by the towns of Malta and Stillwater where the park is located in. “No companies that we were working with would submit to having

History Center Hold Awards Ceremony

Our Redeemer Lutheran Church Lenten Activities and Meals

BALLSTON SPA - On the evening of March 8, 2022, the Saratoga County History Center hosted a gala at Brookside Museum to celebrate the inaugural winners of the Saratoga County Public History Award: Carol Godette and James Richmond.

About fifty guests, including History Center trustees and staff, gathered in the “Long Room” at Brookside Museum to learn about the new award, hear testimonials about the work and careers of Godette and Richmond, and revel in scholarly camaraderie. Presided over by History Center trustee and Public Relations Manager Michael Landis, the guest list featured local historians, journalists, and dignitaries from the greater Saratoga County area. After brief remarks by Landis and History Center president Field Horne, Karen Staulters, Historian of the Town of Milton, introduced James Richmond with an emotional review of his many publications and services to the community. Richmond, in turn, reminded the assemblage that public history is a cooperative effort and that none of his achievements would be possible without the help of others. Next, Chad Beatty, publisher of Saratoga TODAY, spoke about the challenges of finding good writers before handing over the lectern to Carol Godette, who shared her deep love of local history that stemmed from her childhood experiences in Saratoga. Both Richmond and Godette have published widely on Saratoga County history, with Richmond specializing in the 18th and 19th centuries, and Godette on the 20th century and the recent past. The Saratoga County Public History Award is an annual recognition of the critical, yet often overlooked, work of local historians, teachers, authors, and archivists. Winners are selected by a committee comprised of History Center trustees, educators, and community leaders. Please contact Michael Landis for more information: mlandis@brooksidemuseum.org.

Saratoga’s “poorhouse.” Estab-lished in 1827 as an alms house for “the victims of misfortune,” the institution grew along with the county. The Poor House complex included a large-scale farm, schoolhouse, imposing brick resi-dence, and an infirmary. Over the decades, laws changed the way indigents were cared for, and, finally, in 1961, the poorhouse was demolished. Though the building no longer exists, this institu-tion played a significant role in the care of county residents for well over a century. “Many people may not realize that County Farm Road in the Town of Milton once led to an actual farm that was operated by people who lived in the county poor house” Roberts explains. “This 112-acre parcel was home to thousands of county residents over its 130year history and operated almost self-sufficiently. Some of the people who were cared for there stayed only a few days, while

others were there for much of their lives.” Free tickets to attend this event in person are available at https://brooksidemuseum.networkforgood.com/ events/39903-supporting-the-poor-in-saratogacounty The program will also be broadcast on Facebook Live on the Saratoga County History Center Facebook page. “The Deepest Devotion” Wednesday, April 6, 7pm On Zoom Timed perfectly to celebrate the 200th birthday of the beloved general and president Ulysses Grant, Episode 19 of the popular virtual speaker series Experts Next Door will feature public histo-rian and re-enactor Ben Kemp of the Ulysses S. HOME SOLUTIONS Did you know? Certain home improvement projects are more complex than others. Projects that involve working with gas lines are among the most complicated and risky undertakings, and even seasoned do-it-yourselfers are urged to leave such tasks to certified professionals. According to Angi, the average cost to move a gas line is between $15 and $25 per linear foot, and homeowners can expect to pay an additional $1 to $10 per linear

foot for pipe materials. A natural gas plumber can install, extend and repair natural gas lines and ensure that the project is completed safely, on time and within homeowners’ budgets. Angi notes that the average cost to move a gas line is between $250 and $750 for the whole project. However, if a buried line must be excavated, that cost could run into the thousands of dollars.

Explaining easements, setbacks and CCRs Property setbacks as well as easements and conditions, covenants and restrictions (CCRs) must be considered before renovating an existing home or building a new one. Setbacks are mandated buffers between surveyed property lines and permanent structures. Easements are legal designations that enable individuals or entities to use portions of a person’s property for physical access or to build on it for one reason or another. Easements may be owned by utility companies for gas lines or government agencies when sidewalks are on a private property. Additional examples of easements include greenbelt conservation easements, beach easements or view easements, according to The Spruce, a home and lifestyle resource. CCRs include rules established by many planned communities, subdivisions and planned unit developments. CCRs, easements and property setbacks can affect which type of renovations are allowed on particular plots and may affect the issuance of permits. It’s essential to learn about property easements, CCRs and setbacks in advance and discuss them with contractors when drawing up preliminary plans. Your property deed or plat map as well as the local building inspection offices can highlight any regulations that may be in effect on your property and if they may affect future projects.

OPINION What Putin Knew By Rich Lowry

There are forgivable intellectual and policy errors, and then there's the self-delusion that has driven the West into its dependence on Vladimir Putin's oil and gas. Russia has long been a major supplier of energy to Europe. The depletion of European natural gas reserves has played a role in Russia's increased significance. Moscow has also benefited, though, from a deliberate choice by Europe to attempt a great leap forward into a green-energy future, especially in a Germany that turned its back on both nuclear and coal. In taking this route, Europe made a holiday-from-history decision to forget the incredible power of oil, gas and coal -- the most reliable and efficient sources of energy the world has ever known -- and ignore the inevitable centrality of energy to geopolitics. Greta Thunberg, the teenage climate activist who has been elevated into an oracle of all that is good and true, demanded nothing less. No matter what you've heard, the world hasn't embraced fossil fuels out of hatred of the planet, rather because they are so incredibly useful. If they didn't already exist -- thanks to sunlight and plants that lived millions of years ago -- we would have to invent them and wouldn't be able to. Oil is a miracle fuel. Alex Epstein of the Center for Industrial Progress writes that it is "almost eerily engineered by natural processes, not just for cheapness, not just for reliability, not just for scalability, but also for another characteristic crucial to a functional civilization: portability." It powers cars, trucks and jets, without which the modern world as we know it wouldn't exist. Coal, too, Epstein notes, is affordable, abundant and easy to extract and transport. There is a reason that developing nations invariably use it to power their economic advancement. So, it's not surprising that fossil fuels are still the leading source of global electricity, with coal accounting for 36.7% and gas 23.5%. The total fossil fuel contribution, at 63.3%, is down only slightly from two decades ago. In terms of overall energy, fossil fuels are an even larger proportion, 84.3%. For its part, green energy -- wind, solar and other renewables -account for around 10% of global electricity, and even less of total energy. Vladimir Putin knew this and understood the power it gave him, even if European policymakers couldn't be bothered to think a tiny bit strategically. Did they not notice that coal was the mainstay of Britain's rise to global power in the 19th century? Did they forget the role of oil in World War I and World War II, let alone subsequent 20th-century history? Petroleum wasn't particularly useful prior to World War I and, by the end of it, had become a pillar of national power. It fueled the motorized vehicles and airplanes that transformed warfare. British foreign minister Lord Curzon famously said at the war's conclusion that the Allies had "floated to victory upon a wave of oil." In World War II, the Japanese attacked the United States in part for fear that the American de facto oil embargo would starve its war machine, and one reason the Nazis were defeated was that they ran out of fuel. Of course, the strategic significance of the Middle East owed almost entirely to its vast oil reserves. The phrase "war for oil" is a cliche and usually a smear, but it is certainly true that no one has ever fought a war for wind. In light of all of this, Europe still choose to subjugate itself to an anti-Western authoritarian and, even as Russian opera stars are getting canceled, it hasn't ceased purchases of Russian oil and gas. Some perspective is necessary. While climate change may indeed prove a serious long-term challenge, it is not reducing parts of European cities to rubble or a threat to use a tactical nuclear weapon. If this horrifying episode hasn't scared the West straight on energy, nothing will. Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review.

How the Supreme Court's Gerrymandering Ruling Vindicated the Wisdom of John Roberts By Jason Willick

(c) 2022, The Washington Post Where does Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. go to get his apology? His 2019 opinion that federal courts should stay out of partisan state gerrymandering battles was denounced at the time as an "abdication" (Justice Elena Kagan) and a sop to "big Republican donor interests" (Sheldon Whitehouse, a Democratic senator from Rhode Island). More recently, President Joe Biden's Supreme Court commission cited Roberts's ruling as evidence for the view that the court's conservative majority is "complicit in and partially responsible for the 'degradation of American democracy' writ large." But as the first redistricting cycle after Rucho v. Common Cause comes to a close, it's apparent that the critics were mostly wrong about the decision's effects. New district lines are making the House of Representatives more progressive. "In 2020 the median district was biased against Joe Biden by two points," the Economist reported last month. "But in 2022 . . . this bias is almost certain to be much closer to zero." Rucho is one of the reasons. With federal courts' power over redistricting curtailed, three divided state supreme courts in the past year jumped in to overrule GOP gerrymanders - in Ohio (with a total of 15 seats), Pennsylvania (17 seats) and North Carolina (14 seats). Republicans in state legislatures objected, but on Monday, March 7th the U.S. Supreme Court closed the book on the issue, at least for the 2022 election, by refusing to hear an appeal from the North Carolina GOP. Meanwhile, state supreme courts have so far not struck down aggressive Democratic gerrymanders in deep-blue states such as Oregon (six seats), Illinois (17 seats) or New York (26 seats). And because of Rucho's holding that partisan gerrymandering is a non justiciable "political question," Republicans in those states have little recourse in the federal courts. So much for the big donor interests. Republicans were expected to dominate the redistricting process because they fully control 24 state legislatures to the Democrats' 14 - but that calculus didn't take into account the way judicial politics on state courts could net Democrats about a half-dozen House seats. This reversal of partisan fortunes may be surprising to the law professors and activists who were certain that Rucho was a Republican power grab. But it's probably less surprising to the chief justice. Roberts was clear in the ruling that despite the Supreme Court's hands-off approach, the legislative temptation to gerrymander could be constrained. State constitutions, for example, "can provide standards and guidance for state courts to apply" in reviewing district lines, Roberts wrote. Now, a handful of state courts have done just that. Put aside the wisdom of individual state court

gerrymandering decisions this cycle, which have had a clear Democratic bias. The fact that state courts are increasingly at the center of a contest over the democratic process is significant, and it could be a model for depolarizing America's political system. State supreme courts have faded in significance in recent decades, and the justices in Washington correspondingly loom larger and larger. As federal appellate judge Jeffrey Sutton wrote in his 2018 book "51 Imperfect Solutions," we now live "in a top-down constitutional world, in which the U.S. Supreme Court announces a ruling, and the state supreme courts move in lockstep" to follow. The democratic distortions created by the high court's aggrandizement are well known. Yet the Supreme Court's Rucho decision was an exception. It wisely walled off the justices from the politically explosive gerrymandering wars. That separation created more room for state courts to arrive at their own conclusions about what limits state constitutions place on partisan redistricting. Instead of holding life tenure, state supreme court justices are usually elected, so if voters don't like their gerrymandering decisions, they can throw the judges out (as might happen in North Carolina this year). It is possible this balance won't last through the next redistricting cycle - and if it doesn't, it will likely be conservatives who upset their own achievement. In the North Carolina case this week, Justices Samuel A. Alito Jr., Neil M. Gorsuch and Clarence Thomas wrote in a dissent that they would likely hold that the Constitution also bars state courts from reviewing a legislature's map. Justice Brett Kavanaugh said the question merited consideration in the future, and a 2014 redistricting opinion by the chief justice has led to speculation about Roberts's views. Stripping state courts of their power to apply state constitutions to the gerrymandering problem altogether would quash an experiment in state-court pluralism. There's a lot of loose talk about the Supreme Court's "legitimacy," but that legitimacy is tested most when the justices are called to pass judgment on the most sensitive machinery of democracy - elections. The aftermath of the 2020 election showed the importance of the federal courts as a backstop against subversion. By leaving gerrymandering to state courts and commissions, Rucho fortified the justices' credibility to intervene in the electoral process when no other institution has the authority to do so. The liberal justices in Rucho (and Democrats in Congress) want to create a federal standard for redistricting, which would marginalize state courts. Now, some conservatives, out of frustration with state-court activism, are tempted to compel all states to comply with a nationwide rule of their own. Let's hope the chief justice finds support on the court for his much-maligned but democratically sound middle way.

Soul Shop for Youth Workers Training the First to be Held in Upstate New York SARATOGA COUNTY -- The Saratoga County Suicide Prevention Coalition is partnering with The Church at Newtown Road to offer suicide prevention training to the community. Two unique trainings will be offered in March. They are open to the public and registration is required for each. The Soul Shop for Youth Workers training focuses on faith-based and youth-specific suicide prevention techniques and is the first of such training to be held in upstate New York. The Community Awareness Skills Training (CAST) is a community conversation to address how we think and talk about suicide. Michael S. Prezioso, Ph.D., Commissioner of the Saratoga County Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services said, “Sadly, suicide rates are climbing in New York State. While many people can and do overcome the crisis through connections with others and intervention strategies, everyone can play a role in preventing suicide by learning the warning signs and reaching out to someone they’re concerned about. These impactful and much needed trainings will provide attendees with the knowledge and tools to help save a life.” Amy Hughes, Outreach Coordinator at The Church at Newtown Road said, “Suicide prevention is more than just stopping someone from acting on their thoughts. It is recognizing the warning signs, understanding how to talk about suicide and depression, and knowing the resources available for

BALLSTON SPA - The 2022 Ballston Spa Farmers’ Market, sponsored by the Ballston Spa Business and Professional Association (BSBPA), will run from June 11 through September 29, 2022. The markets will be held on Thursdays from 3-6 pm and Saturdays from 9 am-1 pm in Wiswall Park on Front Street, in the heart of downtown Ballston Spa. The markets have been serving the local community since 2003. Our mission is to bring together local farms and food/craft producers with consumers and to promote locally created products. The market is now accepting vendors for the 2022 season. New and returning vendors can apply online at https:// www.ballston.org/category/farmers-market. The market bylaws are posted on the application page.

Most importantly, volunteer help will assure that the Ballston Spa Farmers’ Market will continue to be a presence in the village. Please contact farmers’ market chairperson Nora Osuchowski at nora@ballston.org to find out more. Customer admission to the market is free. Updates on what is new at the market throughout the season can be found on the Ballston Spa Farmers’ Market Facebook page and at ballston.org. The Ballston Spa Business and Professional Association, established in 1983, is a non-profit organization committed to making the Village of Ballston Spa a great place to live, work and visit. like crazy.” Arcuri boiled down NFTs’ popularity to a “collector’s kind of mentality.” He said what makes NFTs unique is the process behind their creation, asserting they’re like trading cards. An NFT is composed of multiple layers, traits if you will, that the maker creates and are randomly assembled

through a script. Some of those layers are only present in 2 percent of the 10,000 minted in the collection. And the rarer the traits that you have increases the value of your NFT, Arcuri noted. Much of the desire for NFTs stems from the stories behind them. “Having certain NFTs from certain designers

is a really big deal,” he said, pointing out how the National Basketball Association (NBA) has started working with them for marketing campaigns. Thompson’s collection was completed in the fall, although he put the launch on hold because he didn’t know how to market it. Twitter is home to a wealth of NFT enthusi-

asts but the platform bars traditional advertising for the tokens because it’s considered a financial instrument. Thompson has had to resort to Instagram ads that will move traffic toward his website. He and his partners are building the community to market the art with hopes of having an official mint day in May, at which point he’ll start selling his NFTs.

HOROSCOPE Week Of March 20, 2022

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Spending time alone could be good for you this week, Aries. While working toward your goals, you also are enjoying some much-needed peace and quiet. TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Your friends may be pushing you to move forward since you seem to be stuck in the past, Taurus. Don’t stay stagnant for too long or you may lose motivation for change. GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 A collaboration with someone close to you yields surprising results, Gemini. You may have been looking for inspiration for some time and finally found it. CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, a longing for adventure points you in all sorts of different directions over the next few days. You have to try on a few different hats to find the right fit. LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, a fantastic investment opportunity comes your way but there is a lot of red tape that could get in the way if you let it. Work through all angles to make things happen. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, idolizing someone can have its plusses and minuses. You may have a picture of a person that is impossible to live up to. Temper your expectations. LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, a rigid schedule may work for some, but not everyone. Incorporate a little flexibility into your life and others may be flocking to your laid-back style. creative idea that you have had, Scorpio. This person may offer valuable feedback that can guide you as you try to flesh out your idea into something tangible. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, you may be interested in having a lot of fun, but someone keeps throwing a wet blanket on your ideas. Don’t let it derail your plans. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 It’s easy to give opinions and pick sides, but don’t get pinned down to a particular position until you’ve tried several different options, Capricorn. Then you’ll have a good idea. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Others may not understand the way you manage money, Aquarius. But you have a clear understanding of your particular brand of logic. PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, friends are a strong presence in your life right now and you are very grateful for all that they provide you. Let them know. “It’s a great business. It’s a lot of fun, (but) it’s not for the faint of heart,” Thompson said. And he conceded that NFTs have all the making of a classic marketing fad or bubble. “When (the) NFT bubble pops and goes away, which it will someday ... I have the other side of the business, which is just steady,” he added.
