Wildlife Preserve & Park’s Winter Nature Walks

SARATOGA COUNTY

- Sundays are a great time to get outdoors and enjoy some winter trail time!

Saratoga PLAN and Wilton

Wildlife Preserve & Park are partnering to bring winter nature walks to the Glowegee Preserve. These walks will take place on three Sundays from 10:00 to 11:00 am. The final walk on February 12 will help participants learn to identify trees in the winter by looking at bark and branches for their unique characteristics. People can register for one, two, or all three of the walks!

The walks have been developed and will be led by Environmental Education and Conservation Interns who were hired through a grant of the Land Trust Alliance’s New York State Conservation Partnership Program. If the trails are snow-covered, the walks will take place on snowshoes. Snowshoes are available for rent for the program at $3.00/pair. Registration is strongly encouraged as winter parking at the trailhead is more limited than at other times of the year. Walks may be cancelled due to inclement weather. To register or for additional program information, please visit the Preserve & Park’s website at www.wiltonpreserve.org and click on the “Public Programs” tab to access the online registration form. Registration can also be done by calling 518-450-0321.

‘Hedonist’ musician lives in moment

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Stars often overshadow their art. That was the case at Thursday afternoon’s concert at Equine B&B at Morning Star Farm. The music wasn’t the thing. The musician was — a donkey named Gus.

As part of the show for Gus’s Sweet Ass OneMan Band, he bopped his hoof on the cymbal pedal, wiggled his lips over the ivories and ended each passage with a flourish — a squeak of a bicycle horn. Gus, who got into the music business with his trainer, Sue Rosenberg, loves to perform.

“He loves his music,” said Rosenberg who has worked with Gus for five years. “He loves to make noise. He loves to make a ruckus.”

But Gus performs more than music. He also dunks a toy basketball into a child’s hoop,

Atchinson, the barn manager at the Saratoga Springs farm.

Atchinson took in Gus after his previous owner couldn’t get him to do what they needed him to do: stand passively as part of a Nativity. Atchinson offered to take him, thinking a donkey, commonly used to protect herds of animals from coyotes, bobcats and other predators, would be a good babysitter for her horses.

But Atchinson didn’t realize a donkey can be stubborn. Gus, who is 18 — which is young for an animal that can live as long as 50 years — resisted the barn routine. He didn’t want to hang out in a paddock all day. He didn’t want to go into his stall at night.

He became mischievous. At night, Gus would lean on his stall door, bending the iron reinforcement, until it busted open. Once out, he would root through feed and crack open the horses’ boxes outside each stall by lifting and throwing them until they shattered. He would also force his way into horse stalls or tear down the gate to the training arena, searching for horse treats that fell to the floor. And then when Atchinson would try to get him back into his stall, he wouldn’t go.

“Donkeys do what they want to do,” she said.

that either.

“He was like, ‘who is this lady and why am I doing what she is telling me to do,’” Rosenberg said. “The first few days, he just blew me off. I just kept handing him treats.”

After about a year, she said, he was “looking for me” and clearly enjoyed learning.

“We are pretty well-bonded,” she said. “He really is sweet. All of the horses like him. He likes all the cats and dogs. He just wants to be the mayor of the barn.”

She explained that clicker training requires patience. She does it by introducing an item she wants Gus to operate — for example, the rural mailbox. She carefully watches him as he explores it; when he does something with the object that she wants him to learn, like put up the mailbox flag, she clicks her tongue and gives him a treat.

places mail in a mailbox, pushes a baby carriage with a stuffed donkey inside and dances the cha-cha — all of which amazes Rosenberg, who has clicker-trained dogs and horses.

“I don’t think any dog or horse could learn to do the things he does,” she said. “He’s freaking smart, super smart. … I’m just trying to stay ahead of him. I think I’m going to teach him chess next.”

Rosenberg, 65, lights up when she talks about Gus. She has worked with him since 2018 when she retired from Skidmore College as the editor of its magazine Scope. She got involved after Gus was adopted by Sandy

That’s when she turned to Rosenberg. Atchinson, who also works as a bus driver and thus has little time, knew Rosenberg trained dogs and horses. She asked if she would work with Gus in her retirement because, Atchinson thought, Gus’ behavior might improve. When Rosenberg agreed, Atchinson warned her: “Just don’t get hurt.”

At the time, Rosenberg said, she didn’t dwell on the warning because “I think donkeys are cute and I like them.” But she quickly learned they are not as compliant as dogs or horses.

“He is bad and he is so strong,” Rosenberg said. “He’s stronger than a horse. … He’s 800 pounds of impulse.”

She said when she first met Gus, he ignored her. He wouldn’t let her put on his halter; he would run away. She would chase him. When she tried to put him in his stall, he wouldn’t do

Kronos Quartet still wonderfully weird at UPH

— It’s a funny thing when an ensemble dedicated to the new and unusual causes a feeling of nostalgia. But Kronos Quartet, which performed Sunday night at Universal Preservation Hall, has been going for almost 50 years. They were a key element in the avant-garde, becoming fashionable and exciting during the mid-

to late-80s, right there alongside Philip Glass and Laurie Anderson. They wore funky outfits, played weird pieces nobody knew and drew enthusiastic audiences.

Seeing the three original members arrive on stage not only stirred up memories of concerts from long ago but also brought to mind the sight of wrinkled and stooped rock stars still on the road and doing their thing. It

feels good to report that Kronos hasn’t lost its touch.

The evening was anchored by a searing performance of Terry Riley’s “Cadenza on the Night Plain.” The halfhour long piece is one of many the composer has written for Kronos. Best known for his minimalist free-for-all “In C,” here Riley’s music is austere and controlled, spacious but dry. The generous

Gus knows the click means he is doing something right and he repeats the move again and again, getting treat after treat — mostly bits of apples, carrots and molasses-infused hay stretchers — and on special occasions, a peppermint candy.

Rosenberg said donkeys like to bop and flip things over with their nose. She noticed he was doing that with the plastic chairs set up for spectators in the arena. She wondered if she could get Gus to upright chairs after he knocked them over.

“It didn’t take long at all,” Rosenberg said. “It could be on its back or side and he works it like a Rubik’s cube until he gets it upright. … He whirled it around until he figured how to get it up.”

She’s now teaching him how to play a snare drum to add to his band’s repertoire of sound.

The two, who see each other every other day, are so close that he knows the sound of her car. As soon as she drives up, he starts to bray. And when she leaves him for the night,

solos for each player were performed with earnest concentration, while there were ensemble passages that appeared like dances in the desert. The performance confirmed Kronos as mature artists whose work with composers has resulted in music of lasting substance.

Kronos’ commissioning program provided material for the concert’s first half, which was more light and playful. The works by Peni Candra Rini, Aleksandra Vrebalov, Mazz Swift and Nicole Lizee functioned almost as a suite. They were episodic and loose and frequently invited extraneous sounds to join the party. Prerecorded tracks of ambient

noises and voices were also common. The most extravagant and also the tightest composition was Lizee’s “ZonelyHearts,” which came last. It included percussive use of dial-up telephones, bowing on hardcover books and striking the strings with flimsy rolls of paper.

When Kronos made its major label debut in 1986, the inclusion of Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze” made a big impact and the song became a signature work for the group. It’s good to see the quartet still drawing from the rich well of rock and pop.

After intermission came vibrant arrangements of Bob Dylan’s “All Along

Richmond has enjoyed working closely with a group of local residents since the summer of 2022. “From our first meeting, they embraced the challenge of telling the story of the community they love. They brought binders of pictures and scrapbooks at each meeting that helped tell their stories.”

Richmond, along with History Center volunteer videographer, Dave Waite, recorded 25 interviews.

They are now in the process of editing the film. “Selecting the clips to use is hard,” said Richmond, “there are so many great stories to tell.”

Gus-inspired blog. His social media presence has brought visitors to the barn, which he loves.

“He’s learned quickly that he is very photogenic,” Rosenberg said. “He’s interested in everybody and wants to know what they brought him. He’s so smart and interactive.”

And though she worries that Gus will outlive her, she can’t think of a better thing to do in her retirement.

“I’m totally glad I did it,” Rosenberg said. “It made my retirement. It’s the center of my retirement. I love every minute of it, every aspect of it.”

Of course, all this started as a way to get him to behave better at the barn. But that hasn’t really happened.

“He’s better than he was,” Rosenberg said. “But there are times he’s just obnoxious.

“He just does not care if you like it or not. … But then he’s also very affectionate. He’s charging at you, running away and then five minutes later he’s in his stall, lovey-dovey and sweet. He’s a hedonist. He lives in the moment.”

Capital Region Veterans Memorial Fundraising Continues

GLENVILLE - Efforts are continuing to create a Capital Region Veterans Memorial in a new 6.5 acre Legacy Park at Dutch Meadows Lane and North Ballston Road in Glenville, NY.

The Capital Region Veterans Memorial board of directors is trying to raise $1,000,000 or more to build a 4,000 square foot building to house a Veterans Café, visitor welcome center, museum, and computer technological services. The Legacy Park will have an amphitheater and a serene walkway with Military monuments, according to Mary Brandt, board president.

Monuments for World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan and Expeditionaries will commemorate our fallen troops from Albany, Columbia, Fulton, Greene, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Warren and Washington counties.

The completed project will honor our deceased Veterans while honoring and also serving our living Veterans, according to Ginny Barr, a board member.

The Veterans Café will be a place where Veterans, their friends and families, as well as the general public, can interact and share history and concerns, according to Justine Crowley-Duncan, board secretary.

Larry Zeglen, board vice-president suggested combining two original ideas of a Veterans Café’, inspired by Richard’s Coffee House in North Carolina and a monument park, inspired by one in Utah.

To date the group has raised nearly $100,000, according to Brandt.

There are a number of ways people can help fund the project. Donations can be made through its website at capitalregionveteransmemorial.org or by mail. Send checks to Capital Region Veterans Memorial, PO Box 2756, Glenville, NY 12325.

Or, by purchasing a brick paver for the walkways by the monuments. A 4” by 8” paver costs $100 and an 8” by 8” paver costs $200. You can honor a Veteran, a military unit, a group, a business or anyone and that will be engraved on the paver brick. To place an order on line, visit the website at capitalregionveteransmemorial.org, and click “Buy a Brick”

Take Action Against Radon

No one is invulnerable to cancer. When it comes to reducing their cancer risk, individuals take many steps, including changing their diets and following recommended timelines for various health screenings. However, one important strategy may never occur to the average person — getting one’s home tested for radon.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that radon accounts for roughly 21,000 deaths from lung cancer each year. In fact, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in people who don’t smoke, according to the American Cancer Society.

Radon is a natural substance that is produced from rocks and dirt in the ground, but that doesn’t make it safe. Radon is always present in the air in low concentrations, but heavy concentrations are dangerous. This can occur when too much radon gas from underneath a home leaks into a residence and builds up inside. The higher the radon levels and the longer the duration of exposure, the greater the risk for illness.

Radon is odorless and colorless, so there is no way to know if it is present without

The program takes place at the Real McCoy Beer Company, the historic birthplace of Major-General Abner Doubleday in Ballston Spa. The agenda of the series is as follows: February 9 – The Hamiltons and the Schuylers

Tackling Problem

Gambling in the New Year

a specific radon test kit. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that affordable radon kits are available from hardware stores and can be ordered from the National Radon Program Services website at http://sosradon.org/test-kits.

Not all tests are the same, so it is important to read the directions. Depending on the test, it may take a few days or many months to finish the test and wait for the results from the testing laboratory.

If test results show a radon level of 4 picocuries per liter (pCiL) or higher, it’s adviseable to do a second test. If that test also comes back high, the issue will require remediation. A radon expert can provide advice and some solutions. Large radon problems typically require the services of a mitigation contractor to fix the home radon issues.

The CDC also advises people who have well water to get the well tested for radon, as sometimes well water can carry radon into the house, too.

Radon is a problem that can affect newer and older homes alike. Simple testing can determine if radon needs to be addressed or if a home is safe. It’s a routine safety measure homeowners should not overlook.

and new beginnings. Many people use January as a benchmark to reprioritize their lives. Wellness is often at the top of people’s priority lists with things like making time for self-care, ending harmful habits, or wasting less and saving more money.

With the introduction of Mobile Sports Betting last year, the Northeast PGRC has seen a dramatic impact on people’s lives in a variety of ways linked to emotions, behaviors, and finances. Young people ages 18-24 and their families are being most affected, many of whom have had little experience dealing with other addictions or mental health issues.

Like other types of gambling, Mobile Sports Betting includes negative effects like sleep issues, strain on relationships with loved ones, financial problems and increased alcohol or drug use.

People who struggle with gambling are also at a higher risk for other mental health problems. The ease of access and lack of awareness about MSB are fostering the development of problems quickly at a point in time when many of these young adults are learning to navigate life on their own.

The problems associated with gambling are not reserved only for the person engaging in the activity. Other loved ones, particularly parents in this case, are finding themselves worried about loved ones, trying to help financially, and wondering how best to handle the situation.

The most important message for the beginning

of this new year is that help is available if you or someone you love has been exhibiting warning signs of a gambling problem, such as unusual financial problems; feeling stressed or anxious over sporting events or other gambling activities; low school performance due to absence or preoccupation with gambling; or lying to family and friends about how much time and money is spent on gambling. January is a great time to reach out to the Northeast PGRC.

The Northeast PGRC is here to help anyone who is looking to reprioritize their lives and overcome the problems that gambling has caused. Private-practice counselors, behavioral health and treatment facilities, recovery groups and other community services throughout the Northeast region make up a vast referral network. When people call 518-801-1491 or email NortheastPGRC@ NYProblemGambling.org, they confidentially connect with a knowledgeable PGRC staff person who will listen to and connect them with the resources that best meet their needs. Whether you are ready to get help, or you are just curious about your options, give us a call today. We’re here to help.
