Shelter leader tells of threats

Group has dropped plan to build center for homeless

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Right before Shelters of Saratoga withdrew its bid to build a 24-hour drop-in center for homeless people, its executive director and board president endured days of threats of physical violence and personal lawsuits, the organization’s leader wrote in an email to city officials.

Duane Vaughn, the executive director of Shelters, wrote to Mayor Ron Kim and the City Council members saying “the threats were unbearable.”

“This has completely shaken our home,” Vaughn wrote. “My wife considered going to a family member or a hotel. Members of the community not only threatened my board president, as you know because the police are involved, but found my unlisted home phone number and address. … We had days of no sleep and constantly looking over our shoulders. I don’t have a team of lawyers and a police force.”

He said board President Kathy McNeice also was targeted.

The threats came as a result of a plan to build the drop-in center at 5 Williams St., a city-owned building that used to house the Saratoga Springs Senior Center, which is being relocated to new and larger $3 million facility. However, parents of students at the nearby Saratoga Central Catholic School were opposed to the project, which would provide support to homeless people including help with mental and physical health, job searches and the search for housing. Parents launched a petition that received more than 1,500 signatures.

“We strongly oppose the proposed location of a low barrier homeless shelter next to a school,” the parents’ petition reads. “As a low barrier facility, Shelters of Saratoga will intentionally attract and admit individuals with no identification, will not perform background checks, will not screen for sobriety, and will permit pets.”

Mayor Ron Kim, who said his office also received a lot of anonymous calls and emails that he called graphic and threatening, said he too is angry.

“Jesus Christ is the most famous homeless person in history,” he said. “I would think that sending your child to Catholic school, there would be a little part of your makeup that cares.”

The Diocese of Albany Catholic Schools, however, sided with parents.

Diocese schools Superintendent Giovanni Virgiglio Jr. wrote a letter that stated “asking school parents and administrators … to recon-

cile the proposed location of a low-barrier shelter is not only unfair, it’s unacceptable. When considering the care and concern for both vulnerable populations, the welfare of our children and students must take precedence. Their safety is already our top priority, and we cannot stand for anything, no matter how well-intentioned, that may put their safety in question. Therefore, we must vigorously oppose the city’s proposal as it stands today.”

Saratoga Springs police said they are not investigating the threatening email and calls to Vaughn. State Police said they will not release names of complainants or victims.

It’s the second time the organization’s plans have met public opposition. In 2018, neighbors legally blocked Shelters from building a permanent winter sanctuary next to the nonprofit’s Walworth Street location.

“We had to take a serious pause,” Vaughn said. “We must continue to educate and commit to total community buy-in. However, I cannot compromise the safety of my family. I have saved every message and phone number that has called my office and my home just in case of further threats.”

Vaughn could not be reached Monday morning for further comment, but on Friday he called Saratoga Springs a caring community and that more education is needed.

Kim, while disappointed in those who opposed the drop-in center, said he has lost confidence in Shelters of Saratoga’s capacity to open and manage the needed drop-in shelter. Yet he said one is needed to help move homeless people out of the city’s parking garages where they sleep and defecate.

“At least at the center, they would be registered,” Kim said. “There is no register to go live in the Woodlawn (Avenue) parking garage.”

With that in mind, he said on Tuesday, he will name a homeless task force that will locate a site.

He still believes the old senior center, which is city owned and was going to be leased to Shelters, would have been the best location as the homeless population often panhandles nearby and gets care at the Saratoga Hospital Community Health Center, one block away. At that location, the hospital provides health services, including addiction and behavior health medicine, to all regardless of insurance or income.

“Bottom line is this: if Duane Vaughn and Shelters of Saratoga can’t provide what the city needs, we will,” Kim said.

“At least at the center, they would be registered. There is no register to go live in the Woodlawn (Avenue) parking garage.”

— Saratoga Mayor Ron Kim

Couple launches a bakery to bolster organ donations

SARATOGA — Last January, Melissa and Steve Wojcik were packing for their honeymoon when Wojcik, 40, suffered a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital. He was later diagnosed with advanced heart failure and received a life-saving transplant.

The Saratoga County couple launched an at-home bakery to raise awareness for organ donations. For every dozen cookies sold, The Cookie Jar by Mel donates $1 to Donate Life New York State, an organization with a mission of increasing organ, eye and tissue donations.

For several months after his initial heart attack, Wojcik was in and out of the hospital as his health continued to worsen. It wasn’t until June, when he was readmitted to Albany Medical Center Hospital, that he was diagnosed with advanced heart failure and told he needed a heart transplant. Within a week of being on the donor list, he received the call that a match was found.

For Melissa Wojcik

and the rest of the family, the early morning operation left them riddled with anxiety. Coincidentally — or, perhaps, an act of fate — a transplant survivor group from Donate Life New York State was meeting at the hospital for the first time in a year. Group members were able to offer Wojcik’s loved ones insight on the process and share their own stories of healing.

“They did an unbelievable job getting to take care of my wife and especially my daughter, getting her over being afraid and reassuring her that they’d all been through what I was going through, and that I was going to be fine,” he said. “When I got out, that experience really inspired us.”

Her husband’s newfound goal of supporting the organization helped Melissa Wojcik realize her lifelong dream of starting a bakery.

Two weeks after he was released from the hospital, Melissa Wojcik began baking cookies at home while her husband focused on developing a business model. Before long, the couple’s kitchen became their all-day workstation filled with the aroma of freshly baked cookies.

The business sells a variety of the treats, including chewy oatmeal raisin, peanut butter blossom, snickerdoodle and sugar cookies as well as gluten-free options. The recipes come largely from Melissa Wojcik’s childhood spent baking alongside her grandmother, especially the old-fashioned chocolate chip cookies.

After a successful season spent establishing the business and earning $7,000 thus far in sales, the Wojciks are preparing for the next phase of operations: opening a brick-and-mortar store so guests can browse the sweet treats in person. The Cookie Jar by Mel will open in May in a shop at the Saratoga Escape Campground in Greenfield Center.

As part of the expansion, the menu will also include cupcakes, muffins and other homemade baked goods. They will also be partnering with a local farmstand to sell their desserts as well, The couple also plans to hire a baker soon.

“There are hundreds of people on that site every day during the summer so we’re launching there so we can have a guaranteed stream of income, and then we’re going to keep it open all year round until we can save up enough to get a better location,” Steve Wojcik said. Their friendship with the owner of the campground helped bring the partnership to fruition, he said.

As they prepare to open the store, customers can continue to shop online at https://thecookiejarbymel.com/Delivery is free within 50 miles and shipping is free for orders over $25. All orders come per dozen and begin at $12.95.

Capital Region Veterans Memorial Fundraising Continues

GLENVILLE - Efforts are continuing to create a Capital Region Veterans Memorial in a new 6.5 acre Legacy Park at Dutch Meadows Lane and North Ballston Road in Glenville, NY.

The Capital Region Veterans Memorial board of directors is trying to raise $1,000,000 or more to build a 4,000 square foot building to house a Veterans Café, visitor welcome center, museum, and computer technological services. The Legacy Park will have an amphitheater and a serene walkway with Military monuments, according to Mary Brandt, board president.

Monuments for World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan and Expeditionaries will commemorate our fallen troops from Albany, Columbia, Fulton, Greene,

Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Warren and Washington counties.

The completed project will honor our deceased Veterans while honoring and also serving our living Veterans, according to Ginny Barr, a board member.

The Veterans Café will be a place where Veterans, their friends and families, as well as the general public, can interact and share history and concerns, according to Justine Crowley-Duncan, board secretary.

Larry Zeglen, board vice-president suggested combining two original ideas of a Veterans Café’, inspired by Richard’s Coffee House in North Carolina and a monument park, inspired by one in Utah.

To date the group has raised nearly $100,000, according to Brandt.

There are a number of ways people can help fund the project. Donations can be made through its website at capitalregionveteransmemorial.org or by mail. Send checks to Capital Region Veterans Memorial, PO Box 2756, Glenville, NY 12325.

Or, by purchasing a brick paver for the walkways by the monuments.

A 4” by 8” paver costs $100 and an 8” by 8” paver costs $200. You can honor a Veteran, a military unit, a group, a business or anyone and that will be engraved on the paver brick. To place an order on line, visit the website at capitalregionveteransmemorial.org, and click “Buy a Brick”

For more information, contact Mary Brandt at 518-495-2524 or marybrandt543@gmail.com

How To Host The Ultimate Watch Party

Watch parties provide great opportunities to get together with friends and family. Such gatherings can be centered around Hollywood awards shows, sporting events or even the finale of a popular television series. Regardless of what’s being watched, hosts can employ various strategies to make the party as fun and memorable as possible for themselves and their guests.

• Stock up on food and drinks. Even if the festivities won’t include a sit-down dinner, stock up on food and drinks so no one goes hungry or thirsty. If the event you’re watching is slated to begin shortly after dinnertime, consider hosting a potluck pre-event dinner. A potluck dinner helps take some of the burden off of hosts and the pre-event meal can be a great time to share thoughts and theories about the event everyone is there to watch. Provide plenty of nonalcoholic beverages like water, soda, tea, and coffee as well. Alcoholic beverages can be served, but hosts should keep everyone’s consumption to a minimum to ensure guests make it home safe.

• Prepare some event-specific treats. Some event-specific treats like cookies that look like baseballs or desserts designed to mimic the appearance of an awards show statuette can inject a little something extra into the party.

• Send guests home with event-specific party favors. Event-specific party favors also can be a nice touch that guests won’t soon forget. If you’re gathering to watch a big game on the gridiron, pass out foam fingers with league or team logos. If it’s the finale of a beloved television series, hand out show-related mementos that allude to a specific and important episode, character or plot point in the show’s history.

• Make sure everyone has a seat and some space. Before inviting guests, conduct a reasonable assessment of your viewing space and determine how many guests can fit and sit

Did You Know?

Certain home improvement projects are more complex than others. Projects that involve working with gas lines are among the most complicated and risky undertakings, and even seasoned do-it-yourselfers are urged to leave such tasks to certified professionals. According to Angi, the average cost to move a gas line is between $15 and $25 per linear foot, and homeowners can expect to pay an additional $1 to $10 per linear foot for pipe materials. A natural gas plumber can install, extend and repair natural gas lines and ensure that the project is completed safely, on time and within homeowners’ budgets. Angi notes that the average cost to move a gas line is between $250 and $750 for the whole project. However, if a buried line must be excavated, that cost could run into the thousands of dollars.

maintains the desired speed. Features include an ergonomic body, a tool-less blade-change system, and a blade ejection lever.

• FESTOOL T18 Easy Cordless Drill Plus Set — Expand your drilling capabilities with features like the new generation brushless EC-TEC motor and electronic torque setting for precise screw driving and drilling wood or steel. A metal keyless chuck allows for the use of most drill bits, from 1⁄16”- to 1⁄2”-diameter.

• Porter-Cable 5” Random Orbit Sander — This lightweight sander is ideal for surface preparation for smoothing seams and for removing paint, varnish and old coatings. Accepts 5” 8-hole hook-and-loop paper.

• WoodRiver Panel Cart — Move large sheets of material from a truck bed or trailer to your table saw with minimal effort using this handy cart. Tilting carriage and frame are adjustable.

Doors and other finishing options

Make exterior home doors and furniture the center of attention with colorful paint that brightens even cloudy days. Refresh the look of garage doors, porches, shutters, railings, fences, and storage buildings with a new coat (and maybe color) of paint.

• GENERAL FINISHES Milk Paint in 33 premixed colors works well for wood doors and furniture, as well as other structures. Be sure to add GENERAL FINISHES Exterior 450 Varnish in satin, gloss, semi-gloss, or flat to enhance the milk paint’s durability.

• GENERAL FINISHES Outdoor Oil Finish is ideal for exterior weather conditions and may be used over other brands of exterior oil stain or exterior clear oil finishes for additional protection.

• System Three Marine Spar Varnish is designed for exterior surfaces and provides long-lasting protection

comfortably in the space. Events like games and awards shows tend to last several hours, and guests will want a comfortable seat and a little space to spread out. Tailor the size of your guest list to your available space.

• Upgrade your tech. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of many watch parties, and in the interim hosts’ tech might have fallen a bit behind the times. Shop around for new items if your television could be a few inches larger or your surround sound system could use an upgrade to make any audiophile proud. Guests will appreciate the high-quality images and sound, and hosts will enjoy the upgrades long after the party has ended.

• Fill the down time. A television show watch party may not have much down time, but games and awards shows will have some breaks in the action. Some fun games like bingo can keep guests engaged even when the action on the screen slows down.

Hosts can up the fun factor of watch parties with a few simple strategies to make the festivities feel unique.

against water and marine environments.

• System Three Clear Epoxy Sealer S-1 is a two-part clear, penetrating, waterproof, epoxy sealer. It is completely waterproof and suitable for use above and below the waterline.

• Waterlox Original

Marine Finish and Original Marine Sealer: These premium tung oil-based products work together to penetrate and waterproof wood that lives in the outdoors. Both go on easily with brush, lamb’s wool applicator, cloth roller, or a sprayer.

• U.C. Coatings Corporation Nano-Guard Premium Wood Sealer is a clear, non-film forming sealer that allows the wood to age naturally without decay. It deeply penetrates the wood’s surface to protect and stabilize wood against weather and caustic conditions.

• To apply coverings by hand, consider Redtree Onyx White China Bristle Brushes (solvent-based finishes) or Redtree Matey Synthetic Bristle Brushes (water-based finishes) available in three sizes.

• For spraying, the EARLEX® Super Finish Max features a built-in 450-watt sprayer, eliminating the need for a hose or motor to move around. Spray milk paint, chalk-style paint, latex paint, enamels, primers, urethanes, stains, and varnishes.
