Saratoga County gets ready for November races
By WENDY LIBERATORE
— The political parties have spent the last few days gearing up for November elections, with the Saratoga Springs Democratic Committee naming its candidates and the Saratoga County Republican Committee, its officers.
SARATOGA SPRINGS
Pat Tuz, chair of the city’s Democratic Committee, said the party has selected retired energy consultant and founder of Energy
Next, Gordon Boyd, to run for Saratoga County supervisor, a seat that current Supervisor
Tara Gaston will vacate at the end of her term.
“When Tara Gaston announced she wasn’t running again, we knew we needed to fill the seat with someone capable and willing to campaign hard,” Boyd said on Monday. “I called some people who said the usual stuff, that it wasn’t the right time for them. Then I got a call ... asking me.”
He said his campaign will center on three pillars — democracy, fairness and safety — with an emphasis on housing, funding law enforcement and first responders, creating a county program for those recently released from prison and ensuring that the city has more say on the county’s important committees like Law and Finance.
JOHN CARL D'ANNIBALE / TIMES UNION ARCHIVE
Democrat Gordon Boyd, a former candidate for mayor in Saratoga Springs, is now the city Democrats' pick as candidate for Saratoga County supervisor.
Tuz said that the committee decided to back all of the incumbents for reelection, too: Ron Kim for Mayor and Jason Golub, James Montagnino, Dillon Moran and Minita Sanghvi for commissioners of Public Works, Public Safety, Accounts, and Finance, respectively. She said that the members of the all-Democratic City Council are getting things done, including working on issues of homelessness, affordable housing and violence on Caroline Street.
Developer awaiting OK for $8.9 million project
By MELISSA MANNO
ROUND LAKE
— DCG Development, a Capital Region commercial real estate developer, is hoping to break ground this spring on an $8.9 million project that would bring 57,360 square feet of office and warehouse space to a site off Route 9 in the village of Round Lake.
The proposed project would transform a vacant area at 26 Wood Road into three multi-tenant buildings ranging from 7,200 square feet to 26,400 square feet, according to the application filed with the Clifton Park Industrial Development Agency.
The town agency voted earlier this month to award a tax incentive package that would save the developer $1.19 million over the next decade after factoring in administrative costs and fees, the Albany Business Review reported. The package is contingent upon the project receiving site plan and environmental approvals from the town Plan-
The county Republican Committee met to elect Ballston Deputy Supervisor Joe Whalen as chair, replacing Carl Zeilman who resigned from the post in October.
The committee also named Clifton Park GOP Committee Chair Jeff Jones as first vice chair and vice chair of candidate recruitment.
The committee also elected Jennifer Weaver as treasurer, Scott Kingsley as secretary, Justin Baker as vice chair for fundraising and Audra Hedden as vice chair of events.

ning Board.
DCG Development anticipates the Clifton Park Planning Board will approve the project sometime in March. If the project does receive the necessary approvals, the company’s request to receive $262,500 in sales tax exemptions, $57,720 in mortgage tax exemptions and $958,160 in property tax exemptions will be granted to offset rising construction and development costs.
The Saratoga County project will create 45 construction jobs over six months, according to documents filed with the town. Construction is tentatively scheduled to conclude in the first quarter of 2024.
The site of the project, less than a mile from Exit 10 off the Northway, is located across from another DCG commercial hub: the 36-acre Tech Valley Flex Park campus, home to Wyrestorm Technologies, Death Wish Coffee’s manufacturing plant and Capital District Sports.

Factors That Can Delay Your Renovation
Homeowners who decide to renovate one or more rooms in their homes may be excited about the changes that are in store. Even simple modifications to paint color or accessories can change the look of a space. Larger renovations can produce even more dramatic effects. When contractors provide cost estimates, they may predict how long they expect the job to take from start to finish. It is impossible to plan for every scenario, however. Jobs may be delayed for various reasons, and it’s
rarely the fault of the contractor. Here are some reasons a renovation could experience snags along the way.
• Preexisting conditions: Opening up walls or removing flooring could reveal hidden problems. These include prior insect damage, leaks and water issues, asbestos, mold, or even pests. The presence of unforeseen issues will require remediation that can extend the project timeline.
• Schedule backup: Contractors often have busy schedules. When one job experiences delays, that causes a domino effect on others on the calendar. Homeowners should realize that the estimated start date of their

HOROSCOPE

After that learning period, things will come more easily.

Gemini, do not wait around for change to come.
Sometimes you have to get the ball rolling yourself. Put plans in motion and figure out who will join you.

to figure out funding if those plans are to be put in motion. This includes home improvements.

This event is produced by the Glens Falls Collaborative with major support from the City of Glens Falls and the Glens Falls Business Improvement District. The Glens Falls Collaborative was created in 2012 by a group of dedicated merchants who wanted to cross-promote and increase business flowing to Downtown Glens Falls, in cooperation with the City of Glens Falls and the Glens Falls Business Improvement District. The Collaborative has expanded to put on major Downtown events including Pet Fest, Wing Fest, Grandma’s Table, Take A Bite, Boo2You, the ADK Christkindlmarkt and Hometown Holidays. The Collaborative also creates an incredible brochure of Glens Falls with a large distribution, beautiful joint advertising, and now includes restaurants, arts and nonprofit organizations, health related businesses, media arts firms, many different service providers and other area businesses.

own project is just an estimate and not necessarily set in stone.
• Lack of materials: Builders sometimes have difficulty procuring materials from vendors. Whether it’s concrete or a special-order appliance, the contractor is at the mercy of the vendor. If there are shipping delays or other issues, the job will have to be pushed back. Many steps to a project hinge on the one before. For example, walls cannot be put up until electrical work and plumbing has been completed.
• Prior errors: Corrections may need to be made to what a previous contractor or even the homeowner did. Problems need to be fixed or they may compromise the look and safety of the project. Issues may arise if prior renovations were not done to code.
• Obtaining permits: The application process for obtaining permits can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months depending on the municipality and the scale of the project. Long permit lead times can delay the start of the job.
• Weather: Mother Nature can affect everything from the availability of materials to the job itself, particularly if work is being done outdoors.
• Finances: The overall cost of the job may change, especially if issues arise during the work. If funds dry up, the project may stall.
Certain factors can affect how long a renovation project will take. Homeowners should know that timelines are estimates and not set in stone.

A successful interview benefits both job seekers and employers. Such an interview increases the likelihood that a qualified candidate can become a trusted and devoted addition to a company’s team. Employees working in concert contribute to a profitable and efficient enterprise.
Candidates undoubtedly recognize that performing well in interviews increases the likelihood that they will be offered jobs. Understanding what to do and what not to do while in an interview can make the difference between receiving an offer and being passed over. Similarly, there are certain dos and don’ts for hiring managers to ensure that they follow protocol and ask the best questions so they can get the most accurate information possible about candidates.
Interviews typically last less than an hour, so time is of the essence to make the right impression. These guidelines can increase the chances of a successful interview.
Candidate DO your research and investigate the company to which you are applying. Learn about its history and ethos, as well as its mission. Familiarity with the products and services the company provides is important as well.
DON’T be late to the interview, as that can convey unreliability.
DO go over and outline answers to general interview questions. It’s not wise to have answers memorized (nor should you read them off of a sheet), but have a good idea of what you plan to say and other talking points.
DON’T dress casually even if the company advertises it is casual. It’s best to overdress so that you look professional.
DO prepare some data or anecdotes that can show off your skills and strengths.
DON’T forget to ask questions of the interviewer — at least one or two — that will illustrate your interest and knowledge of the organization.
DO send a hand-written thank you note for the interview, and then be patient. Success magazine says it can take a while for employers to narrow down candidates and make decisions.
Employers
DO ask about past experiences, particularly challenges candidates have faced and how they resolved those issues.
DON’T ask personal questions about family, political affiliation, marital status and anything else that can create the appearance of bias when hiring.
DO ask about strengths and weaknesses of the candidate so you can gauge if the person knows where there may be room for growth and improvement.
DON’T ask all the questions. Leave time for the candidate to ask his or her own questions.
DO remain engaged and ask questions that will enable you to remember what stood out about the candidate.
Interviews provide a short period of time in which employer and potential employee can get to know one another. Certain protocols can help both applicants and employers make the most of the interview process.
