— If you’ve decided to take your little ones for a Saturday visit to the Children’s Museum at Saratoga, don’t be surprised if you’re greeted with a full parking lot and a waiting list.

The museum’s team expected membership and attendance would increase when the organization moved into the Lincoln Bath building at Spa State Park last July — the new, larger space is more centrally located, has easily accessible parking and offers more room for more activities than its former Caroline Street location, said Barbara Owens, director of development. The thought was numbers would increase by 50 percent, but Saturday attendance alone has tripled and overall attendance has doubled, Owens said.

The move to a larger space also happened at the same time as the museum’s 2021 merger with The

Children’s Museum of Science and Technology, which was previously located in Rensselaer Technology Park. CMOST’s outreach educational programs are now offered through the children’s museum.

“We are very fortunate to have very, very busy Saturdays here,” Owens said. “It’s super exciting, and we’re thrilled to be serving so many members of the public.”

While tickets for special events, including Big Truck Day on April 22 and Sensory Sundays, are available online, regular admission tickets are available at the desk only.

As the museum nears capacity, the desk puts out a sign indicating three options: come back another day; if it’s the morning, consider returning in the afternoon; or join the wait list. Guests’ names are added on a first-come, first-served basis, and they are asked to wait in the lobby until space becomes available. Waiting times vary since each visiting

group takes a different amount of time depending on the age of the children, size of the party or if it’s a first time experiencing the museum, Owens said.

For parents looking for a less crowded visit, Owens recommends coming during the school day, if possible, though there is a chance a field trip will be visiting. To help plan visits, the museum recently launched Facebook updates on field trip days to give parents a sense of how many children and chaperons will be in the building.

The museum also launched Sensory Sundays, a monthly day dedicated to smaller crowds, less noise and no flashing lights. During regular museum days, noise-reducing headphones and weighted vests are available at the front desk for over-stimulated visitors, and a sensory nook on the second floor offers a quiet sanctuary.

Saratoga County taking over inspection duties from state

BALLSTON SPA — Saratoga County’s steady growth means it must take on inspection duties that were handled by state government.

To help cover the transition, the state Assembly budget proposal would provide the county’s health department with $1.6 million, said Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner, D-Saratoga Springs, who is pushing to make sure funds are included in the final state budget due at month’s end.

It is included in both the executive budget and the one-house Assembly spending plan, she said last Friday in a statement. Woerner noted the county’s population gain that has put the county in a category where it must take over some duties handled by the state, such as restaurant and lead inspections, she said.

The county has been working for several months to expand the public health services department into a full Department of Health, said Clifton Park Supervisor Phil Barrett, who chairs the Board of Supervisors’ Health and Human Services Committee.

Barrett said by April the county will have accepted responsibility for four state programs as it builds out a new Environmental Health unit.

The state money would help recruit, hire and train staff and pay for equipment and supplies, he said.

According to the U.S. Census, Saratoga County’s population rose from 219,607 to 235,509 between 2010 and 2020.

The Center for Economic Growth noted last year that after a census study, Saratoga County had the state’s third-largest total population gain, 1,670 people, between July 2020 and July 2021.

Saratoga County History Bacon Hill – Not Forgotten

Jim Richmond is a founding member of the Saratoga County History Roundtable, author of two books on local history and a trustee of the Saratoga County History Center at Brookside Museum. He is the director of the just-released documentary film “Bacon Hill-A Forgotten Crossroads” produced by the History Center.

“Why not Bacon Hill?” Within days of the Saratoga County History Center’s release of our first video in a new series, entitled “Forgotten Crossroads – Rock City Falls” in April 2022 two board members approached me with a suggestion for our next video. We had envisioned this multi- film project as a way for the History Center at Brookside Museum to bring

attention to the many small hamlets within Saratoga County with a long history, but now largely by-passed by the economic and transportation revolution of the last 100 years. In a county dissected by the Adirondack Northway 60 years ago, and today mostly known for the shining resort of Saratoga Springs, and the sprouting housing developments of Clifton Park, Wilton and other growing towns, this series was meant to highlight those small communities long since forgotten. Our first indication that these assumptions did not tell the whole story was during the filming of Rock City Falls. Yes, it had a long history, yes it no longer was the home of many large paper mills powered by the Kayaderosseras Creek gurgling through its center. No longer was there an electric railway to trans-

port workers and the goods they produced to Ballston Spa and its connection to the larger outside world. But we soon realized that the hamlet was still a living, breathing crossroads. Residents still took pride in their community, its two churches and its volunteer firehouse. Local men and women still worked in the remaining mill, Cottrell Paper Company. The Manson Inn still attracted visitors for social events. Surprised by this vitality, we closed the film with a segment entitled “The Com-

The committee included the inaugural winners, Carol Godette and Jim Richmond, as well as Dr. Julia Blackwelder (Texas A & M University), Ellie Dillon (National Bottle Museum), and Dr. Michael Landis (Saratoga County History Center).

Mr. Paul Perrault taught history at Shenendehowa High School, 1967-1975, and then served as Principal of Ballston Spa High School, 1978-1998. Now retired, he continues to pursue his passion for history by working as the Malta Town Historian, where he spends his time documenting that town’s past. In addition, Mr. Perrault is the editor of (and frequent contributor to) The Gristmill, a local periodical of note, and often gives public talks on local and regional history. He is best known for his gracious personality and expertise on Luther Forest and the Malta GE test station.

Mr. Charlie Kuenzel is a retired Earth Science teacher

who began his career at Saratoga High School. In early 2000, he began taking other teachers on after-school walking tours to educate them on geology and the origins of our famous spring water. After his retirement in 2010, Mr. Kuenzel embraced history full time and devoted himself to research and serving on the board of the Saratoga Springs History Museum, where he diversified programming and forged partnerships with other Saratoga non-profits. He has co-authored two books on local history, has written a popular historical column for the Simply Saratoga magazine for the past twelve years, and has interacted with thousands of tourists and locals through public lectures, living history events, and tours. “Charlie strives to find creative ways to make history accessible to all,” observes Carol Godette. “His love of local history is deep and admirable.”

Mr. Perrault and Mr. Kuenzel will be honored at the April 13 ceremony at Brookside Museum. The event, which was originally slated for December 2022, was pushed back to the spring because of all the exciting renovations occurring at the Brookside mansion. The terrific success of the “Preserve the Porch” and “Finish the Job” fundraising campaigns have allowed History Center trustees to move forward on critical infrastructure improvements and innovative new exhibits. The April gala will be both a celebration of the award winners and a preview of the May re-opening of the beloved museum.

Women’s History Month with the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation

SARATOGA - The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation will celebrate Women’s History Month on Thursday, March 30 at 7PM with virtual program “Saratoga & Women’s Suffrage.” This program is presented by Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner, a highly regarded author and historian of the suffrage movement, with an introduction by Nancy Baird Brown, member of the National Votes for Women Trail.

Saratoga’s role in the American Revolution is legendary, but very little is known about Saratoga Springs’ role in the 72-year Bloodless Revolution - the fight for women’s suffrage. Dr. Wagner will discuss Matilda Joslyn Gage and her role in starting the New York State Woman Suffrage Association.

“Matilda Joslyn Gage came to Susan B. Anthony’s rescue with a last-minute speech when she was frantically attempting to organize an impromptu woman’s rights meeting in Saratoga Springs in 1854. Judge William Hay, who was in the audience, remembered Gage’s ‘elaborate argument for the removal of woman’s legal and social disabilities.’ I’m eager to share this story and more about Saratoga’s women’s rights history with you on March 30,” said Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner.

“The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation is thrilled to continue to highlight the women’s suffrage movement in Saratoga Springs by hosting Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner. By being involved with the installation of National Votes for Women Trail markers at Fifth Avenue and Broadway this past summerI had the opportunity to learn about the history of this important movement in Saratoga Springs I am grateful that we have people like Sally and Nancy to share this history,” said Executive Director Samantha Bosshart.

This program will be held via Zoom for a suggested donation of $10. For additional information please visit www.saratogapreservation.org, call (518) 587-5030, or email Nicole Babie, Membership & Programs Director, at nbabie@saratogapreservation.org.

But Bacon Hill? What was there about Bacon Hill that could possibly result in a similar uplifting ending? How could we produce a 20 minute video about these fields dotted with a few farms, one church and a blueberry patch? Well, my first impression was correct in one regard. It was indeed impossible to create a 20-minute video on Bacon Hill.

I should have suspected as much at our first meeting with a few residents in July 2022. Pat Peck, not even a resident of Bacon Hill but heir to the Peck family legacy, sent me a list of Bacon Hill folks who might be interested in working on the project. She provided me with background on each one and who was related to whom. That was my first clue that this film would be different. We assembled in the King Brothers Dairy, the only retail establishment in Bacon Hill, a convenience story well known for it milk and ice cream. In walked several people, all of an age, but seemly excited to be part of this project. They brought scrapbooks, photo albums, pamphlets and brochures. That was my second clue.

The stories were my third clue. They had lots of stories. Unprompted by myself they excitedly related their stories to me, a total stranger. As one of our interviewees later stated about another Bacon Hill icon since passed, “They knew everything about everybody.” And the stories, for the most part, were not gossipy tales of their neighbors. They were positive snapshots of the people and families of Bacon Hill, drawing from their memories to recall events in their own lives and those of their relatives and friends, sometimes going back generations.

I was elated by that first visit, but something told me not to get “over my skis.” Oral narratives by people long enjoying the retirement life are great, but was there more to the community? Would the next generation, many in their 50’s immersed in their work, want to share their own stories with this amateur film director and our videographer, Dave Waite? Would they be willing to carve out some time from their busy schedule to contribute to this small locally produced video? After all, time is money, you know.

When we discovered that the answer to these questions was a resounding yes, we knew we had something.

They were gracious and outgoing, eager to talk of their success and challenges, but also proud of their heritage and their families. As one might imagine if you know anything about Bacon Hill, we interviewed several Pecks and Kings. The Peck family first arrived in Bacon Hill in 1836 and two of the largest farms – Welcome Stock and Clear Echo - are owned by 6th generation descendants of the original settler. One of the co-owners of Welcome Stock is Willard “Billy” Peck, the current Northumberland Town Supervisor.

The Kings are relative newcomers, having only been in Bacon Hill for 120 years or so. They are well known for their commercial dairy operation and the aforesaid Kings Dairy store. Edgar King, recently deceased, was also a town supervisor and led the communities farms first movement in the 1990s. His sons Jeff and Jan currently own both the dairy and Kings-Ransom farm.

Of course, there are people in Bacon Hill not named Peck or King. Jen Thomas of Thomas Poultry and Brian Carmer of StoneBridge Iron and Steel each had a story to tell. All of our interviews were unique but common themes emerged. Proud of their accomplishments, all were quick to give credit to the hard work and innovation of past generations. And all were genuinely excited about the future.

We also interviewed Byron Winney, owner of the Winney Blueberry Farm who sadly passed away soon after we had the good fortune to talk with him. The Bacon Hill Reformed Church is the center of the community, both literally and figuratively. Pastor Jan Vincent and church member Nancy Purinton related their 200 yearlong history and spoke of their vision for the future.

One final surprise awaited us. Impressed by the response of leaders of the middle generation, what could we expect from their sons and daughters? One hint came from one of our earliest interviews with Jeff King and his son Johnathan. A young man just graduated from Cornell, the college of choice for generations of Bacon Hill farmers, he was “all in” to embark on the career path of his parents and grandparents. In our last session we talked with Jan King, joined by his wife Pandora Davis, and teenagers Hannah and Nate. You may surmise the results but the best way to confirm your suspicions would be to attend one of the films premiere events.

Thursday, March 30 7 pm at Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa (sold out), Thursday April 20th 7 pm at the Bacon Hill Reformed Church, or Saturday April 29 2pm at the Museum. Registration is suggested at https:// brooksidemuseum.org/

Home renovations can improve a home in many different ways. Modifications to kitchens and bathrooms have long been popular projects, but are they the most popular renovations? According to data from Realm, which analyzed the top 10 most popular projects from roughly 2.8 million listings and permit filings in the United States in 2022, certain projects are more popular than others. Nationally, the most common home renovations include interior painting, exterior painting, finishing a basement,

installing or replacing windows, and bathroom remodeling. Houzz polls have unveiled that renovating kitchens and bathrooms, new windows and porches, balcony and deck projects are among the most popular. According to the Canadian lifestyle resource Icy Canada, which culled various data points and sources, window and door upgrades, kitchen and bath remodels and deck projects are the most popular renovations in Canada.
