SARATOGA SPRINGS - Homes on the city's east side along Union Avenue, George Street, Madison Avenue, and Circular Street will be open to the public on Saturday, May 14, as part of the 2022 Historic Homes Tour, a fundraiser for the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation. This year’s in-person tour features four homes, including a “rehab-in-progress,” and the virtual tour features five homes. “I’m thrilled to have the Historic Homes Tour back in person. After receiving such positive feedback from the virtual tour last year and not knowing what would be possible this year, we are happy to be able to have the best of both worlds. Many people loved last year’s virtual tour because they were able to notice details that they otherwise might have missed during an in-person tour, see beautiful drone views of Saratoga Springs, and enjoy from afar,” said Executive Director Samantha Bosshart. The Historic Homes Tour is the foundation’s largest fundraiser of the year and provides important support for educational programs, advocacy efforts, technical assistance and restoration projects. The foundation is also hosting two educational programs on May 14. “W.C. Whitney: Redefining Racing” will be presented by Charlie Kuenzel at the National Museum of Racing & Hall of Fame, 191 Union Ave. Light breakfast fare will be available while Kuenzel talks about the life and legacy of William C. Whitney, who brought credibility to the crumbling racing industry, built the Oklahoma Training Track and made major improvements to the Saratoga Race Course. The program starts at 9 a.m. “A Week of Wonder” presented by Carol Godette is at noon at Fasig-Tipton, 153 George St. Learn about the quiet, mixed-use neighborhood of George, Case, and Mitchell streets, home to a variety of small businesses such as a mom and pop store, an insurance company, and a gas station and garage. A boxed lunch will be served. This area comes alive once a year to the sounds of yearlings neighing from the

green stables, horse auctioneer calls from the open-air pavilion of Fasig-Tipton, and piano bar singers at the Spuyten Duyvil. “The popular breakfast and lunch programs consistently sell out each year because Charlie and Carol bring a unique perspective to the history of Saratoga as longtime residents. Their roots to this community and passion for bringing history to life always makes for an interesting presentation,” said Membership & Programs Director Nicole Babie. Historic Homes Tour tickets for the in-person and virtual tours are $35 for SSPF members and $45 for nonmembers. Virtual tour tickets are $20 for SSPF members and $25 for nonmembers. Tickets for the programs are $30 each for SSPF members and $35 for nonmembers and must be purchased purchased by Wednesday, May 11. Nontenured teaching faculty at Skidmore aim to unionize Concerns over pay, job security prompt instructors to seek “ voice on campus” By WENDY LIBERATORE

SARATOGA SPRINGS - Fed up with low pay and little job security, the nontenured teaching faculty at Skidmore College have vowed to unionize. And to emphasize their commitment, faculty, students, alumni and regional union leaders rallied outside of the campus’ Case Center on Friday afternoon saying that the time has come to press the administration for a living wage. “For some time now, I’ve been talking with my colleagues from across our very beautiful campus and I have heard their stories and I have listened to their concerns and they have heard mine,” said Gregory Spinner, a professor of religious studies at Skidmore, who spoke to the cheering crowd of about 75 at the event. “It’s not all negative. This Week in Saratoga County History Mechanicville’s Unique WWII Photo Collection Honors the Greatest Generation Submitted by Chris Carola May 5, 2022 Chris Carola is a former Albany-based Associated Press reporter who lives in Saratoga Springs. He can be reached at ccarola@ nycap.rr.com On May 8, 1945, Nazi Germany surrendered to Allied forces, ending World War II in Europe. Less than four months later, on Sept. 2, Japan formally surrendered aboard the USS Missouri anchored in Tokyo Bay, bringing history’s most destructive conflict to an end. More than 16 million Americans served in the U.S. military during the war, including several thousand from Saratoga County. Many of those local veterans hailed from the city of Mechanicville, where a unique artifact from their wartime service survives to this day. In 1942, not long after Japan’s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor brought the U.S. into the war, restaurant owner and photography buff Charles Siciliano Sr. started snapping portraits of local servicemen in uniform when they stopped at his restaurant on Warsaw Avenue in what was then the heart of Mechanicville’s Italian American neighborhood. Siciliano’s Restaurant

was a popular spot in the 1940s, known for its clams, Italian food and live dance music on weekends. “It was standing room only,” Charles Siciliano Jr., a boy when WWII started, told me in November 2000 for a story I wrote on his father’s photo collection while working as a reporter for The Associated Press in Albany. As the war progressed and more Mechanicville men went into the service, the elder Siciliano, known to everyone as Charlie, turned his photography hobby into a local tradition. Soon, servicemen home on leave were being told, “Go up to Charlie’s place and have your picture taken.” Siciliano snapped every photo in the same spot: in the corner of the restaurant’s bar, where the white tile walls and a window with the shade closed provided a good background for the black-and-while portraits. Most men sat posed with their right arm resting on the bar, many with drink in hand, with a vase with flowers or a liquor bottle at their bent elbow. Siciliano developed and printed the 3-inch-by-3inch photos himself, then framed them in groups of 25 and hung them throughout the restaurant. By the time WWII ended, hundreds of photos of local veterans – including a handful of women -decorated Siciliano’s walls. Not all of them were from Mechanicville. Servicemen from Stillwater, Waterford, Ballston Spa and Saratoga Springs had their photos taken by Siciliano,

as did some veterans from neighboring Washington and Rensselaer counties. Every branch of the U.S. military is represented in the photos, and the people smiling for Siciliano’s camera saw action in every theater of the war, from the skies over Europe to remote Pacific islands, from the beaches of Normandy to the jungles of Burma. Among the veterans in the photo collection are: Hawley Waldron Sr., of Mechanicville, a Marine who fought at Saipan and Iwo Jima. David Catallo, of Waterford, a Navy corpsman wounded at Omaha Beach in Normandy on D-Day. Chris Sgambati, Mechanicville’s 30-year representative on the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors, a sailor who served in the Pacific Theater, including the 1944-45 Philippines campaign. William Grey, of Mechanicville, an Army Air Forces navigator who flew 50 missions in Europe, where he survived being shot down on his 33rd mission. Carmine DeCrescente Sr., of Mechanicville, who forged his parents’ signature at 17 to enlist in the Navy and served in the Pacific aboard the USS Texas. All are deceased. DeCrescente, patriarch of the family-owned beer distributing company based in Mechanicville, passed away last Dec. 16 at 94. “Carm” was an accomplished clarinetist as a teen and was a regular performer at Siciliano’s before joining the Navy. He

was likely among the last surviving WWII veterans whose photos are in the Siciliano collection, if not the last overall. Siciliano also took photos of local servicemen during the Korean War, but the vast majority of the more than 700 snapshots from his collection are from WWII. He sold the business in the late 1970s to Frank Costanzo, who inherited the hundreds of framed photos. Costanzo had them remounted in eight larger frames, then took the collection with him when he relocated his business to the town of Waterford. There, the frames covered the walls in the entrance for years before being donated to the Mechanicville Public Library. The library is also home to all the negatives from the original photos, donated by Charles Jr., a retired Saratoga Springs school district administrator. The library has digitized the Siciliano collection on its website: https://www.flickr.

com/photos/mechanicvilledistpublibrary/ sets/72157602435034007/ While taking photos of hometown servicemen and displaying them in bars, post offices, city halls and other public places was common during WWII, few if any of those collections are known to have survived the intervening 80 years. Which makes Mechanicville’s collection unique, according to historians I interviewed for the two stories I wrote for the AP on the Siciliano photos, the second one written in September 2015 for the 70th anniversary of WWII’s end. The National World War II Museum is home to more than 100,000 artifacts, including photo collections. Yes it’s the quality, size and longevity of the Siciliano collection that make it “a local history treasure trove” and “completely unique” among known WWII collections, Kimberly Guise, a curator at the New Orleans museum, told me for that 2015 AP story

HOME SOLUTIONS Did you know? Certain home improvement projects are more complex than others. Projects that involve working with gas lines are among the most complicated and risky undertakings, and even seasoned do-it-yourselfers are urged to leave such tasks to certified professionals. According to Angi, the average cost to move a gas line is between $15 and $25 per linear foot, and homeowners can expect to pay an additional $1 to $10 per linear

foot for pipe materials. A natural gas plumber can install, extend and repair natural gas lines and ensure that the project is completed safely, on time and within homeowners’ budgets. Angi notes that the average cost to move a gas line is between $250 and $750 for the whole project. However, if a buried line must be excavated, that cost could run into the thousands of dollars.

Answers To Common Pet Fostering Questions

Animal shelters serve as temporary way stations for animals that are between homes. The purpose of shelters is to offer food and safe surroundings for surrendered or lost pets until they can be reunited with owners or be adopted by new families. The ASPCA says around 6.3 million companion animals enter U.S. shelters every year, with a nearly even split between dogs and cats. While shelter pet numbers are on the decline since 2011, many shelters simply cannot house too many animals. In many instances, shelters rely on pet foster families. What is pet fostering? Fostering a companion animal is an agreement by an individual to care for a needy pet in his or her private residence until the animal is placed in a permanent new home. Many times shelters will ask foster parents to step up and house puppies to provide early socialization and training to acclimate these young animals to living in homes. Who pays for fostering costs? The question of financing foster care depends on the organization one works with. Most shelters or rescue organizations will cover at least some of the costs of supplies and medical care. However, this is not always the case. It is important for potential foster parents to understand the commitment fostering requires before signing up. What are some benefits to fostering for the people involved? While there are many benefits to the pet, including a less stressful, quiet environment, people get something out of fostering, too. Foster families can provide love and affection to an animal that needs it. It can be rewarding to do something selfless, and teaches compassion to everyone in the household. Since having a pet is a large responsibility, pet fostering also serves as an introductory lesson for anyone considering becoming a permanent pet parent. When fostering a pet, everyone in the household gets to see the day-to-day tasks that pet ownership requires. How long is the fostering term? The ASPCA says that time commitments for fostering can vary. Sometimes it may be a matter of weeks or it could be months, depending on the foster program and the pet’s situation. What are common expectations? A foster program will explain their specific expectations. These may include training the pets to void outdoors or in a litter box. Foster parents may be expected to teach a dog to rest in his crate or basic commands. Who can I reach out to? The animal care resource Great Pet Care says municipal shelters, nonprofit shelters and nonprofit animal rescue groups typically have fostering programs. Rescue groups tend to have more time and resources to provide temporary pet parents with more compatible animal matches. Fostering a pet can be a rewarding and worthwhile experience for pets and people.

The Characteristics Of Various Cat Breeds

Cats perch on windowsills and the tops of sofas in many homes across the country. The American Veterinary Medical Association indicated in its U.S. Pet Ownership & Demographics Sourcebook (2017-2018) that 25.4 percent of households owned cats, with a total of 58,385,725 cats residing in the United States that year. The Canadian Animal Health Institute says cats continue to outnumber dogs in Canada, where 8.1 million cats were kept as household pets in 2020. Pet owners understand that there are a variety of dog breeds, each with its own behavior, size and temperament standards. For example, a golden retriever may behave much differently than a toy poodle. The same can be said for cats; cat breeds vary and each has its own notable characteristics. The following are a few popular cat breeds and what owners can expect if they open their homes to these felines, courtesy of PetHealthZone® and Cat Fanciers’ association. • Abyssinian: A popular cat breed, abyssinians are elegant and regal-looking. While affectionate, they tend not to be lap cats, but are known for their curiosity and playfulness. These cats come in four different ruddy colors. • American Bobtail: This cat has a short tail and tufted ears and toes. It resembles the wild bobcat. Some say these cats are dog-like in their personalities. They may enjoy greeting family and some can even be leash-trained. • Bengal: Bengals look like a wild cat with their spotted coats. They are extremely intelligent and require much energy to stimulate them mentally. • Burmese: Burmese cats like spending time with their families and bonding with people. They hail from Thailand, although it was rumored the cats were from Burma, and come in American and British variations. • Devon Rex: With its oversized ears, the Devon Rex can look like a cartoon character. And a character he or she is, preferring to curl up on a warm lap or follow people around the house. The breed also has a hint of mischievousness, so watch out. • Himalayan: Puffy and beautiful, these cats desire petting and grooming. They were bred by crossing Persian and Siamese cats to produce a striking mix. Himalayans are affectionate, intelligent and extroverted. • Maine Coon: These cats got their name from the legend that they’re a cross between a cat and a racoon. This isn’t the case, but Maine Coons are among the largest cat breeds in the world and have fur and tails that resembles a wild racoon’s. People-oriented, intelligent and easy-going are some traits associated with this breed. • Persian: Persians have scrunched faces and silky, flowing coats. They tend to be quiet and gentle, and will offer unconditional love to owners. They can take a while to warm up to new people. • Siamese: These cats look similar to Burmese, and also hail from Thailand. Brown paws and blue eyes give them a striking look. They’re quite talkative and very intelligent. With scores of cat breeds, people can undoubtedly find felines that fit their lifestyles.

Adirondack Center Stage Summer Program for Kids CORINTH - Adirondack Center Stage’s Summer Theatre Workshop (STW) is a summer theatre program for children and youth ages 8-18. This year they will be bringing “Shrek the Musical” to the stage on the weekend of July 29, 30, and 31, 2022. Participants will be working on an engaging project this summer, learning artistic expression through dance, music, puppetry, and mask-making. The tuition prices are modest to provide for the demographics of our community and local artists will be engaged as musicians, directors, costumers, choreographers, and designers. Their first production meeting will be in March and auditions for all registered students will be held later in the springtime. The program respects the abilities of all children, giving each a place to be valued for who they are and what they have to offer and gives participants the opportunity to act, sing, dance, paint sets, run technical equipment, and help backstage crew. Learning team-work and problem-solving skills, as well as gaining the concept of cooperation through various project activities, students work under the guidance of a caring, talented, and professional staff. The modest tuition for the program includes student scripts, tee shirts, and costumes. Financial assistance is available to any students requesting it. This worthwhile program for area children was deeply affected by the Covid lockdowns and restrictions and are greatly in need of support to bring a successful production to the stage this summer. Please send donations to our projects to: Adirondack Center Stage, P.O. Box 53, Corinth, NY 12822. Read more about them on their website: www. adkcenterstage.org.

“The incredibly low pay for nontenure-track faculty is totally out of step with the cost of living in the area,” McAdams said. “The nontenure-track faculty is really struggling to meet their basic economic needs. … We all do this because we love teaching, we love working with students. Skidmore students are wonderful young people. It’s just an honor to teach them. But what we do is labor and it needs to be fairly compensated.”

HOROSCOPE Week Of May 15, 2022

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 This week could be a strange time in regard to your finances, Aries. It might be a good idea to get all of your financial affairs in order to figure out where you stand. TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Check around the house for any areas that could benefit from a little improvement, Taurus. Some renovations could provide a whole new look and even outlook. GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Figure out a way to show support for a valued colleague, Gemini. Sometimes just a kind word can transform someone’s day. Your kindness will be repaid. CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Excessive spending could come back to haunt you this week, Cancer. Spend wisely and avoid impulse purchases. A financial windfall could soon be in your future. LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, if you have been feeling bored and restless for the last several days, a change of scenery could be in order. A vacation can fit the bill, but even a day trip will prove effective. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Your ability to focus is high today, Virgo. This means you can learn many new skills and apply them how you see fit. Take advantage of this chance to better yourself. LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Give some thought to how you can increase your income, Libra. It can help to have a few extra dollars coming in each month. A part-time job may be the right fit for now. SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Setbacks at work may have

you feeling a little nervous, Scorpio. However, everything goes through a natural cycle and soon all will be well again. Maintain the status quo. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Information you glean from the news lately could change your perspective on certain situations, Sagittarius. Take it all in before making a final assessment. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 A task that has been in the works for some time finally comes to fruition this week, Capricorn. You will have mixed feelings about getting things done and moving on to new projects. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, a goal regarding your career will finally become a reality. At first you might not believe it, but it’s certainly true. You’ve worked hard for this. PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, you tend to be your worst critic, but that pushes you to achieve as much as you can. It can be a blessing in disguise. FAMOUS BIRTHDAYS MAY 15 Stella Maxwell, Model (32) MAY 16 Danny Trejo, Actor (78) MAY 17 Jordan Knight, Singer (52) MAY 18 Tina Fey, Actress/Writer (52) MAY 19 Marshmello, DJ (30) MAY 20 Cher, Singer (76) MAY 21 Mr. T, Actor (70)

She said that many nontenure-track faculty have to rely on their partners making a living wage, work two jobs or, as she knows in at least one case, go on public assistance. Moreover, she said there is an “extremely bewildering variety of contract structures” for the nontenure-track faculty that offer “absolutely no job security.” “We are on these short-term contracts of one or two years, despite the fact that we fulfill teaching needs that are clearly permanent,” said McAdams who teaches freshman writing, a class that is required of all students. She says the short contracts make it difficult to plan a future. In addition to job security and pay equity, 68 nontenure-track faculty members signed a letter to the Skidmore community stating that they seek “a voice on

campus” when it comes to shaping policy. The letter also requested that the administration “voluntarily recognize the union and to begin good-faith negotiations.” The faculty, students and alumni have also said that righting the inequities inherent in the non-tenure-track salaries, contracts and resources will also better the Skid-more community as a whole and aligns with the values of equity and inclusion that Skidmore purports to espouse. Spinner concluded his speech with “it’s the right thing to do and now is the time to do it.” “If not now, when?” he asked. “If I’m only for myself, what am I? ... Collective bargaining will make Skidmore a better place for both teachers and students to do this important intellectual labor.”
