Saratoga Arts Storytelling (Re)Collected and Juried Exhibition

SARATOGA - Saratoga Arts and Ndakinna Education Center have collaborated to create an interdisciplinary exhibition experience in the Dee Sarno Theater that will inspire questions about how history and stories are recorded, and learning about history through all different genres of art affects the way in which we communicate with each other.

To accurately reflect the diversity of our regional indigenous cultures, this exhibition includes both historical and contemporary work made with traditional Abenaki methods incorporating sound, language and storytelling.

The works on display not only showcase Ndakinna’s commitment to keeping Indigenous history alive, but also how the things we make create relevancy and meaning regarding identity, inspire new narratives and bring into sharp focus the under-told or sometimes inaccurate stories of native and indigenous peoples of the north eastern United States. Our summer exhibitions are created primarily to inform our programmatic work for K-12 summer camps, adult classes, special events and collaborative programming with

Spa Catholic coach reaches milestone with title-winning victory

SARATOGA SPRINGS — When Phonsey Lambert was hired as the head coach of the Saratoga Central Catholic baseball team, the Saints had won two games in two years and had never won a sectional contest. Saturday afternoon, Lambert watched his squad grab the lead in the first inning and continue to build upon on it in capturing a 12-1 victory over Schuylerville in the championship game of the 34th Phil Waring Memorial Tournament.

Saratoga Central Catholic coach Phonsey Lambert holds balloons marking his 600th career victory after his team beat Schuylerville in the Phil Waring Memorial Tournament title game on Saturday. Lambert is 600-213 in his time with the Saints, with ve Section II titles.

As the game concluded, the Saints shook hands with the Black Horses and proceeded to douse Lambert with water.

Saturday’s

title triumph represented career victory No. 600 for Lambert, who began coaching the Saints in 1988. The win marked the 17th time SCC claimed the tournament title. He is 600-213 with five sectional titles.

“I wanted to make this one of the best programs in the state. Year in and year out, we are there and it is so gratifying,” Lambert said.

“I have never thrown a pitch, hit a ball or stole a base. It has been all about my players and coaches. I’ve had so many great players over the years and alumni that have reached out to me.

It has all been very special.”

“I am honored to play for him,” SCC freshman first baseman Carson Moser said.

“I came and watched the 500th win when I was younger (in 2016),” SCC freshman pitcher Pierce Byrne said, who gave up three hits and struck out six against Schuylerville in a game ending in five innings because of the mercy rule. “It is big to be part of the 600th win.”

With the wins Saturday against Corinth and Schuylerville, the Saints finished regular-season play at 17-3 overall — including an impressive 15-3 record in the Wasaren League. Those victories also represented the fourth and fifth in a 48-hour span.

Lambert’s latest accomplishment marked the third consecutive day a prominent Section II baseball coach reached a significant career milestone. Last Thursday, Hoosick Falls coach Mike Lilac. Jr. earned his 400th career victory when the Panthers defeated Waterford 14-4 in Wasaren League play. Maple Hill coach Rico Frese led his Wildcats to a 9-2 Patroon Conference triumph Friday to collect career

Showcasing women entrepreneurs

Saratoga Night Market set for scheduled weekends throughout the year

— A new event series in downtown Saratoga Springs seeks to promote women’s entrepreneurship by showcasing female makers, creators and business owners based in the Capital Region.

The Saratoga Night Market is a two-day event that takes place on scheduled weekends throughout the year with the goal of providing a safe

space for small businesses to network and grow in the community. The free market, which launched earlier this spring, is located at the Palette co-working space at 480 Broadway in downtown Saratoga Springs.

Shoppers can visit the market on various Friday and Saturday nights in the lower level of the Collamer Building next to City Hall and browse a rotating array of local vendors, from inventors and jewelry makers to bakers and artists. The event is the brainchild of local chef and entrepreneur Sahm Reyes, founder of Caffeine-Queens that sells

eco-friendly mugs and specialty coffee blends.

“I am excited to be able to offer the Saratoga community and the greater Capital Region area access to these fantastic female entrepreneurs,” Reyes said in a statement. “Many of the local creators and makers at the Night Market are in start-up mode. As a recently launched fulltime entrepreneur myself, I know how hard it is to find local space to sell my products. I wanted to find somewhere around here that is affordable and safe.”

Reyes says she intends on operating the event

victory No.300.

Byrne, who made his sixth start Saturday, completed his fifth game and improved to 4-1. He overcame trouble in the opening inning when he walked two straight batters with one out.

“He has been doing that for us since he was in seventh grade,” Lambert said. “It is rewarding to see that benefit of that now. We kind of kicked it around for a few years only because we were rebuilding with eighth and ninth graders. We coached them up during the summer time and most of these boys have been with me since they were 8 years old at my baseball camp. It is so rewarding to watch them develop and turn into polished varsity baseball players.”

“It was really big for him to get out of the first inning,” Moser said. “We made a few good plays behind him. Once he gets on a roll, you aren’t stopping him.”

Byrne scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning when he doubled and crossed the plate on a two-out RBI single by Ryan Gillis.

year-round.

The night market has garnered the attention of local vendors since hosting a soft launch in March, with vendor spots quickly selling out for the months of May and June. Vendor tables begin at $45 and can be reserved on the Caffeine-Queens website.

But while interest from sellers is high, Kirsten Voege, communications consultant for the event, said their focus is on promoting it to residents and visitors to help support the local business community. “It’s a chance to try things you might not necessarily have access to otherwise because these people don’t have stores

yet,” Voege said. For example, Voege added, one of the participating vendors is Sara’s Kitchen, a popular Middle Eastern food caterer that regularly attracts a lengthy line of hungry customers at the Saratoga Farmer’s Market. But to avoid long wait times, the owner is accepting pre-orders and allowing customers to pick up their food at the night market during the weekends she participates.

Voege added that many of the sellers currently operate their businesses as a side hustle. “This event allows small business owners a place to sell their wares without a lot of

BALLSTON SPA - The Saratoga County History Center at Brookside Museum is pleased to announce, “A Call to Duty: Saratoga County Veterans in WWII”, a free talk presented by Chris Carola on Wednesday, May 24 at 7 pm.

As a history buff and former AP reporter, Chris has had the opportunity to interview several WWII veterans over the years. He was inspired to research and document the experiences of Saratoga County veterans after coming across a scrapbook in the Saratoga Room of the Saratoga Springs Public Library that underscored how many local men were stationed all over the world during the

During the hour-long talk, Chris will share many stories of local veterans, including the Gaynor family from Greenfield Center, who had six sons in uniform during the war. Chris has described their story as being like the movie “Saving Private Ryan”. The talk will be followed by a question and answer period.

Attendees will have the opportunity to ask Chris questions about his research and the experiences of Saratoga County veterans during and after the war.

“We are thrilled to welcome Chris Carola to the Saratoga County History Center at Brookside Museum to share his research and insights on Saratoga County veterans in WW2,” said Field Horne, Executive Director of the Saratoga County History Center. “This talk will pro-

vide a unique perspective on the war and its impact on our local community, and we encourage everyone to register for this free event.”

Homeowners looking to make improvements to their homes likely want to make such projects as budget-friendly as possible. After soliciting estimates from contractors, homeowners may seek to do some work themselves in an effort to cut costs. That is why many individuals opt to handle demolition and other preparatory

tasks before contractors get started. There are important things to keep in mind when doing demo.

• Prybars are your friend. These tools, sometimes called crowbars, can be used to remove nails or pull materials apart.

• Cover vents in the space where you’re working. Con-

struction dust can be sucked into the HVAC system and cause furnaces to clog. This also may cause the distribution of dust throughout the home.

• Use safety gear. Always wear safety goggles, gloves, boots, and other equipment as needed to remain safe.

• Get a power saw. Circular saws and reciprocating saws can cut through various materials, making faster work of demolition.

• Exercise caution when removing drywall. You don’t know what is behind the drywall, including electric wires, so be careful when choosing a spot to make the first hole in the drywall.

• Get a trash container with a gate. You’ll save yourself some aches and pains by being able to fill a wheelbarrow and dump in into the container, rather than having to toss debris over the top.

• Bust up heavy or bulky items. Cast iron tubs and shower surrounds can be heavy and difficult to move. Unless it’s a family heirloom, cut or break large items into pieces to remove them more easily.

REAL ESTATE / HOUSE OF THE WEEK

4 Boyle Road, Glenville

This week’s home in Glenville was built in 1961, and encompasses

Don’t mistake this week’s House of the Week for your run-of-the-mill, mid-century suburban split-level because the whimsical interior is anything but ordinary. Stylish and sophisticated, 4 Boyle Road is currently occupied by a couple — an artist and an interior designer — who have created an atmosphere that encapsulates their talent and eclectic taste. The pair is moving. Many of the unique design elements — like the bicycle and bowling pin decor — will likely go with them, but they are leaving behind a bright, open and airy modernized 2,700-squarefoot home that offers four bedrooms, two-and-a-half bathrooms and an enormous master closet. A seafoam green backsplash adds a pop of color to the updated kitchen that offers white

2,700-square-feet of living space.

cabinets, granite countertops and a large island with an attached table for dining. A true 1961 tri-level, the living room, den and family room are divided across multiple floors, so there are several spots to socialize or slip away. There’s plenty of green space outdoors, including professionally planned gardens.

List price: $399,000. Taxes: $9,026. Contact listing agent Heidi Rotter, owner and principal broker of Brass Tacs Real Estate Co., at 518-378-3987 or heidi@brasstacsrealestate.com.

LAMBERT

CONTINUED FROM 1

The Saints broke open things in the third inning. The key blow came with the bases loaded from junior center fielder Aidan Crowther, who earned the win in the opening game Saturday when SCC beat Corinth 9-2. He tripled down the line in right to clear the bases. Crowther joined teammates Moser and Hunter Fales on the all-tournament team.

“He is without question our most improved player,” Lambert said of Crowther. “If he hit .100 last year, that was a lot. This year, I said to him, ‘Aidan, if you can hit .230 and get on, that would be great.’ He is hitting over .300 and he really put in the work during the summer and winter. I am very proud of him.”

The Saints finished second in the Wasaren League standings behind Mechanicville, a squad SCC lost to twice.

“We let the first Mechanicville game get away from us and kicked it around a little bit in the second game (a 13-1 setback),” Lambert said. “We had a soul-searching moment. We had a little meeting and said let’s go after this thing. Going into the playoffs having won 10 straight, we feel pretty good about ourselves.”

“That was a good wake-up call against a really good team,” Moser said. “I feel like we have come back and we’re better than ever. We’re ready for sectionals.”

During the team’s 10-game winning streak, the Saints have outscored their opponents 105-12 with four shutouts and should land a solid seed for the Section II Class C playoffs.

“We have improved a lot and worked on a lot of things,” Byrne said. “I think we are going to be good the next couple of years.”

“We’re a young team, but we are all fundamentally sound and I feel we have a good chance in sectionals this year,” Moser said. jallen@timesunion.com A 518-454-5062 A @TUSidelines

TAURUS Apr 21/Ma y 21

Taurus, if you are feeling a bit scattered as of late, take some time out of your schedule to meditate and re ect on what is most important to you. Then follow that path.

Gemini, give yourself permission to move slowly this week. If you racing through things, you’re apt to make mistakes. Set your own pace and let things play out as they may.

CANCER Jun 22/Jul 22

Deadlines could make for a heated week, Cancer. It’s best to remove yourself from any situations before they get out of hand. Offer advice when things cool down.

LEO Jul 23/Aug 23

Routines are boring you lately, Leo. You may need to shake things up. If you work a set schedule, see if you can go to ex time and look for ways to change.

VIRGO Aug 24/Sept 22

Do not let drama that doesn’t involve you sneak into your orbit, Virgo. If you need to distance yourself from others for a while, then do so.

LIBRA Sept 23/Oct 23

Libra, others feel you’re giving off some high-strung vibes this week, and they wouldn’t be wrong. Something is weighing on your shoulders. Figure out what it is and lighten the load.

all sorts of sage advice but it may be frustrating if others don’t want to take it. All you can do is offer and let others lead their lives.

SAGI TTARIUS Nov 23/Dec 21

Things may be a little rough around the edges lately, and you’ll need to gure out the ways to smooth things over, Sagittarius. Find a few friends who are in your corner.

GLENS FALLS - The Lyme Action Network will present a special showing of the internationally acclaimed documentary film, The Quiet Epidemic on Sunday, May 21, 2023 at the Charles R. Wood Theatre, 207 Glen Street, Glens Falls, N.Y., at 2:00 pm. The film will be followed by an expert panel discussion that will feature the filmmakers, Lindsay Keyes and Winslow Crane-Murdoch; best-selling author and internationally renowned Lyme disease expert and physician, Richard Horowitz, MD; Lyme pioneer and renowned physician, Kenneth Liegner, MD; best-selling author and investigative journalist, Mary Beth Pfeiffer; microbiologist and nationally recognized patient advocate, Professor Holly Ahern; and others (to be confirmed.)

About seven years ago, Capital District natives, Lindsay Keyes and Winslow Crane-Murdoch, were very ill victims of Lyme disease and patients of internationally renowned Hudson Valley Lyme disease physician and expert, Dr. Richard Horowitz. When Dr. Horowitz’s nurse practitioner, Jennifer Goldstock (who currently has a private practice in Latham), learned that they were both young filmmakers, she introduced them and they jumped at the chance to work together professionally toshine a spotlight on the dangers of Lyme disease and the largely ignored plight suffered by Lyme patients.

One of Lindsay’s and Winslow’s first stops was to Uncommon Grounds coffeehouse in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., where they met with Lyme Action Network founders Chris Fisk and Holly Ahern who helped to map out the scope of the Lyme disease problem and threads to follow in the development of their story. A history of flawed science, politics, and conflicts of interest has shaped the Lyme disease narrative for decades, much to the detriment of the patients. The filmmakers knew the disease first-hand, and traveled around the country to interview internationally renowned experts from coast to coast, building an accurate and highly informed narrative of the disease and patients’ experience, suffered by too many Lyme patients, as well as building financial and professional backing, including that of Pennebaker Hegedus Films, for their project.

Now, seven years later, the film is complete, and recently introduced to immense acclaim at film festivals across the country. Now available for private showings, the Lyme Action Network is proud to present The Quiet Epidemic at the Charles R. Wood Theater in Glens Falls, N.Y. on May 21, 2023, at 2:00 PM. Tickets are $15 and are available through the Wood Theater at www.WoodTheater.org/events
